I've just read a review by an LK H dated June 3, 2016. They said that the care is "unbelievable inadequate". They mention that they were aware that there is not a residing doctor here and that one does come but once a week. They say that their Dad had this bad experience and yet they decided to let their mom stay here and have the same devastation as their Dad. One has to ask themself why in the world would one continue to have their parents stay here when they knew what the place was like? They said that BOTH of their parents were at this facility for years. It clearly sounds like they took no responsibility for the care of their parents and actually made the decision to leave their parents here despite their "apparent concerns". Something is suspicious about this review. Or sadly even more suspicious is the character of LK H. Now I fully understand that people have their own personal thoughts as to the type of care they want but to continue to "accept" the current level of care by leaving their relative there but then complain about it tells me there is some underlying issue that is not being exposed. I personally have seen families move their relatives to another facility or to care for them themselves and that's understandable. And I've seen families deny needed additional care for their parents and allowed them to suffer. And sadly I've heard of families that deny additional services for their parents so that they can keep the money for themselves. Maybe this was LK H's issue. I can only speculate. I've lived here for six years. What I've discovered is that the staff here is incredibly caring and nice. They go above and beyond to make the residents comfortable and especially safe. They actually listen to the residents and make great efforts to accommodate them. There is also a large volunteer community amongst the residents who hold bible studies, visit and assist the residents in skilled nursing, provide bi-weekly entertainment and shows and even teach table tennis classes. There are Mah-Jong and ukulele groups. We have plays put on by residents and resident talent shows. When residents themselves get involved in the community it reflects a healthy, vibrant atmosphere. People want to get involved. This is not the case in other retirement communities that I've researched before deciding to move here. Also, there are tons of activities organized by Atherton themselves. You can attend exercise and stretch classes, Tai-Chi classes, monthly lunch and dinner excursions, movie nights and trips to the theater, bingo, dance classes and Atherton even organizes domestic and international trips. We went to Japan last November. There are many other activities and educational seminars that I'm not mentioning. All I'm saying is do your homework. Visit many retirement communities and see what they offer before making the decision to move. Understand your financial status to make a good choice to find the right fit for you and your loved ones. read more

I am on wait list over 2 years. My position for the triplex is from 23 to 20 now. It is very possible under this kind of progress I would die before I could move in Atherton since I am 79. The position may go back to 23 due to Atherton policy the residents have priority to move to another units. They usually showed me remodeled units, nice and clean. One time I asked to see a unit I like before remodeled and after resident moved out. It was lack of maintenance and cleaning, it was very dirty and things falling apart. Nobody should live under those circumstances; I feel sorry for the resident who lived there before. The $210,000 entrance fee is none refundable after 4 years. Besides makes money, it prevents people moving out and loosing money. The sales manager answered me questions at her choice, some questions she did not answer for months or years. I treated her nice like my big boss, with curtesy and respect, I wish I knew why she treated me like this. Although the food is good, the yard is beautiful, something is not right. The CEO and Administrator did not respond my email, they are too high to reach. read more

The new leadership has proven to be less culturally competent in the way it treats residents and their families. While programming remains culturally enriching, management styles of leadership staff positions of people who have left since the CEO change are didactically different compared to prior to 2025. read more

We moved my mom to Atherton last September. And we're happy The staff have been really nice to our family. The campus is really nice and my mom kept saying how it's so quiet. The level of care is to notch. They offer independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing for multiple stages (should one need to transition). read more

My parents moved to Atherton as independent living residents. When their health became somewhat compromised, the Atherton staff worked with us as they transitioned to assisted living, where they had a lovely, cheerful apartment and excellent assistance with the things they could no longer do themselves. They loved eating in the dining room, where the staff knew them by name and knew their favorite foods. They felt so loved! When my mother died, my father needed to be in skilled nursing, and again the staff did all they could to ease this difficult emotional transition. Dad so loved Mom, and they'd been married 62 years. Atherton residents dropped by Dad's skilled nursing room regularly to chat or just wave and tell him they loved him. The nursing staff made Dad feel truly cared for and valued, even when he got to the point that he couldn't walk and often could not feed himself. Not once did I see or hear anyone treat him with anything less than loving patience, respect, and integrity. My mother-in-law saw the care my parents got and chose to move to Atherton. She, too, lived in residential, then assisted, and finally skilled nursing. Her care was also exceptional. Because we saw the heart of Atherton for our parents and felt the Christian love exemplified by both staff and residents, my husband and I chose to move to Atherton. We came twenty years younger than our parents so we could build relationships here, and we love it! There are many ways to volunteer, lots of ongoing activities, great exercise classes, and fun events. We truly could not ask for a better place to live. Our children are delighted with our decision to be Athertonians because they know the quality of care we will receive, if and when we need it. It gives them and us great peace. read more

My elderly mother has been here for two years now and it is about as good as one could ask for. She was first in independent living and now is in assisted living. The staff is remarkably kind and caring and not weird. They helped us quite a bit and very sensitively with the move into Atherton, and then with the transition to assisted living. Mom doesn't love it here, but it's because she doesn't love being frail, not feeling well much of the time, not in her own home, and with strangers around. At the same time, she appreciates being looked in on as she knows she can't manage herself anymore. When I come to visit they bring a cot in for me to stay overnight, and they will bring meals in for us to eat if she doesn't want to go to the dining hall. read more

I will forever be thankful for Atherton. I have a sister who has been in their Health Care Center for almost 10 years. She came in at 55 years old. There is nothing more difficult and I am eternally grateful for the care for my sister. Has every decision met my desire for her care? No. But the staff continues to always do their best. From Housekeeping who sings with her, to the Dietary and Nursing staff who know what she likes and work at hearing her laugh. I recently spent the day in ER with my sister and I was asked what facility she was at. The nurse couldn't get over how good my sister looked. Upon hearing the name Atherton, one of the nurses present couldn't keep quiet about how great Atherton was. It was a feel good moment. read more

This is a review for the reception area only. We came to drop off food for a resident at Atherton, she was unavailable so the front desk was kind enough to hold the item until she could come and get it. The lady was genuinely sweet and even tried to contact the resident while we were there. Area looked well kept and we saw many residents waking through the reception area on their way to the dining facilities. They seemed to be happy and a community within themselves. Looks like they have all levels of care available: independent, skilled nursing and 24 hour care. read more

I notice that the ratings are positive.. And I'm sure that this rating will not last long in this site. BOTH of my parents have and were at this facility for years. The quality and care for the residents of this place is 'unbelievable inadequate'. If you come here, expect to die an ugly death here. I have had this experience with my Dad and now my Mom is going through the same devastation as her life ends. Know that there is not a full time residing Doctor. He comes once a week and he does not read the patients medical history. He prescribes drugs that have adverse reaction to the elderly. Furthermore be advised that you are signing over your life and finances when you enter into this place! I recently ran across a review by LK H that made me feel very sad. I understand that anger is one phase of grieving, and the reviewer is clearly very angry. At whom? The world? God? His or her parents for dying? I wish there were a way to comfort the reviewer. Losing one's parents at whatever age is a hugely difficult experience. But I would like to assure the reviewer, and his/her readers, that my experience at Atherton Baptist Homes Skilled Nursing Center was remarkably different from the reviewer's. There was kindness, there was gentleness, and there was compassion, and there was professionalism all during my fairly recent stays there. I spent approximately a month in Skilled Nursing all told. These are the kinds of touches that meant so much to me: During my first stay in skilled nursing, one of the nurses learned that I seem to need food in the middle of the night (I call it my three o'clock feeding.) He also learned that I love canned peaches. So every night he put a dish of peaches on my bedside table. That in itself was thoughtful, but there's more. After I was released, I had to go back to skilled nursing some weeks later. Without any reminder on my part, the peaches appeared again every night. The nurse remembered after all that time, and cared enough to make it happen again. On my birthday, the staff came into my room with balloons and a "Happy Birthday sign," hung them on my door, and wished me a happy day. That was the first birthday I'd had at Atherton, and I had not anticipated spending my landmark 85th in a health facility. But the staff's thoughtfulness started me on a cheerful day. One night a young Asian nurse gave me my evening pills, then with a certain grace he bowed slightly and said, "I wish you a blessing." That touched me and has stayed with me all this time. These are some reasons why I am puzzled by LK H.'s review. I am also puzzled by the fact that there is no other indication of the reviewer's name, yet he/she lists the first and last names of two very good medical professionals in a way that could be considered slanderous. Neither of the two deserve to have their names publicly smeared. They both have truly shown me to be kind, and caring, and accommodating, and able to hear, not just listen. I am very grateful to them, and to their staff. I truly hope LK H.'s review does not deter anyone who is considering a move to Atherton. Moving here feels like the best decision I ever made. And I truly hope LK H is finding genuine comfort from his friends and family and faith. read more

This review is based on their skilled nursing unit only. I would give 4 stars to Atherton's Independent & Assisted Living campus & services, however once your loved one/parent ends up in their skilled nursing unit, it becomes a different experience. We went through so much stress in 2016 while my father was in their skilled nursing unit as a hospice patient as Atherton's nursing couldn't manage his care due to lack of coordination with the contracted hospice agency. It wasn't the fault of the Atherton's nursing staff as they tried their best. The Director of Nursing met with my father several times as he had asked for his t.v. to be moved lower so he could watch the Summer Olympics which she refused. She eventually told my sister that he was confused and unable to make decisions on his own when in fact his mind was always clearly intact. Nothing seemed to go smoothly between the Director of Nursing and our family since we had selected a hospice agency that Atherton normally didn't use, however we wanted this particular agency due to the recommendation of my father's physician and my dad's illness. We eventually moved both our parents out of Atherton and my father was able to receive well-coordinated home hospice services. I've spoken to another family with a similar experience, as they too have had to move their loved one out as Atherton couldn't provide the nursing care needed. Atherton is very good for independent and assisted-living, just not for skilled nursing level. read more
