I trust him and trust his opinion (shout out to Doctor Kim at the Fremont Clinic, he's the GOAT). I've been to Palo Alto VA several times now and trust them unequivocally. They have a partnership with Stanford Medical, so when I go to this VA campus, it "feels" like Stanford. In other words, the bedside manner, quality of care, attention to detail, etc have all been on par with Stanford and Sutter Health (two organizations which I hold in high esteem). I've been a licensed healthcare provider myself for close to 20yrs, I have worked in medical field in some capacity non-stop since 1999, close to 30yrs now... Suffice to say, I am very vigilant and pay attention to the little things. I advocate for my own care and I hold hospitals to account when I or my family are being seen. Palo Alto VA hasn't let me down once, I've seen them for routine issues, both inpatient and outpatient. To include a surgery (hernia repair) - VA PACHS is solid. In closing - if any of my fellow veterans have had issues or poor service from other VA hospitals, VA PACHS is different. They break the mold & I firmly believe they go above & beyond to care for us. Give them a chance.

This is a form of bullying. I would encourage more patients to report them in order to protect other veterans. Stephanie informed me that over 70% of the veterans relapse back into drugs or alcohol after discharge. She also informed me that veterans are more likely to commit suicide within first 7day of being discharged. This is alarming and needs attention ASAP. I think these doctors need to be removed because they appear to be dangerously careless to the care of veterans seeking help and support. I was discharged in the rain on a Friday night without my medical supplies. I fainted at a park and suffered from a mild TBI and Hypothermia. I was discharged after I discovered over maximum dose of 2 sleeping pills. Other programs like FOR and DOM I can't speak on but do not attend the TRP @ Menlo Park VA Medical Center. Enter at your own risk. BEWARE!!!! I'm trying to get an investigation of this program. Please report and speak up to patients advocate. Too many veterans stay quite. I can on speak about me. FANTASTIC is an understatement! These folks have cared for my loved one for over a year. The…read morecaregivers can do anything/everything needed and he is so happy living at Kensington. He really enjoys their outings and approach to memory care - it's like a resort for folks with cognitive issues. Kensington staff have made it possible for me to live my life while they handle the day-to-day care my LO needs. Dementia is not easy, on patient or family, Kensington staff, support and care have been amazing. We had falls - all were handled with careful attention to his wellness, disclosed openly and honestly with me. A couple falls meant EMT's or a hospital was necessary but no falls resulted in any significant injuries. I suspect falls for elderly, fragile, dementia patients with poor mobility are to be expected. Kensington always called to let me know what happened and made recommendations to prevent it in the future. They gave me ample opportunity to state any concerns too. I've found Kensington food is always great - fresh, tasty and as much variety as he wants. WOW, the deserts are his favorite. ;-) He loves the 'mock-tail' parties with music, dancing and singing. I have found the incentive for all community members (staff, residents and family) to participate in activities very high. I know if my LO doesn't join an event - it's his choice to have some down-time and not be 'made-to' participate. It's his life and this disease takes its toll in many areas - he isn't the person he used to be but he loves his Kensington lifestyle. Recently he told me, "while he can't remember much", he's "pretty sure that Kensington is the nicest place he's ever lived". With all the bad days dementia gives us that one little remark was my win for the year - I hold it very dear and I know that Kensington made it possible. I can't speak all aspects of the one-star review BUT perhaps their loved one needed that one-to-one additional care they are now purchasing with the cost savings at the new facility - each resident is an individual. I read their happy review of their new home and I am thrilled they found a good fit for their LO. I think the Kensington staff seem well compensated and well qualified since we experienced no real turn-over and they are always happy to work with us. However, I too "butted-heads" with some nursing staff. I would fault Kensington with failing to identify those staff members who should not interact directly with family or LO's. Working with 'raw', stressed out families (forced to watch a painful decline) is not in every staff-members toolbox no matter how eminently qualified they are for their day-to-day responsibilities. Kensington is not inexpensive but I would say they offer value. Yes, more costly than other national memory care facilities but I would say marginally more than equivalent facilities. Kensington is new, modern, their care-giver to resident ratio is very low, it's a very active lifestyle for those with cognitive issues. My LO complained often about his last facility (more about 'being in' memory care than their actual efforts). He does not complain about Kernsington or the staff which are always happy, friendly, and genuinely welcoming.

Worst experience imaginable for dear family member. If you wish to put your loved one in a fancy…read morememory care on the outside place, and just live your life with relief your loved one is 'semi ok' without updates then definitely go here. One star given for cleanliness of areas and room, and some very kind staff. This is surface level, however, as LO did not receive care consistently and staff did not have training to do most of the basics. The staff will be attentive on the surface, on day one, then vanish. Management will be all supportive if you keep your mouth shut and any updates will be sporadic, not truthful, inconsistent and sadly, non supportive. Senior leadership lacks oversight and you will be gas lighted on multiple levels. The price is sky high and you do not get what you pay for. Food is good if you order off menu vs vats of food specials. Sadly, they simply do not care much for residents as evident on multiple visits and their motto of caring for your family member like family is not factual. Avoid this place.

He was incredibly thorough during our tour--no rushing, no skipping over details. He patiently answered every question and made sure we clearly understood how the community operates. His calm, knowledgeable presence immediately built trust. The CNAs and nurses were equally impressive. They were attentive, compassionate, and consistently greeted residents with genuine smiles. What really stood out was how client-centered they were. Every staff member we passed made eye contact, said "hello," and acknowledged each resident by name--as if each person truly mattered. It's rare to find a place where excellent care, kindness, and professionalism all come together so naturally. This community exceeded our expectations in every way, and we left feeling confident, grateful, and comforted knowing that residents here are treated with dignity and heartfelt care.

I Arrived at the Terraces at 5pm on Saturday May 9…read more I was told there was a problem with my pills between ECH and Terraces so could I have someone bring all my pills up to the Terraces. They also could NOT find a walker so they asked if someone could bring that as well. I had already realized that there were only 2 outlets in the room that would not work for the ice machine and compression machine. So I had them bring up my large outlet and surge compressor to plug everything into. When my friend arrived with all the stuff she called and told me she and some other people were out front because nobody would answer the bell. Since I didn't have my walker yet. I had to sit in my bed and scream. I need help until somebody finally came to the door and said, what do you need? And I said, people are stuck outside. Turns out the person monitoring the door decided to take a break. I was warned that there is only a skeleton crew available on the weekend. Little or no PT or OT. PT which is the main reason I was at The Terraces have some very good people but the policy is not to schedule specific times. That they need to be flexible because people have other things they need to do. So they can just tell you morning or afternoon. Four days had passed and I'd never seen a real towel. There are paper towels, but that's it. So when they said Thursday is the day for you to take your shower? I was like, okay? And since I didn't know what time PT would be because they never tell you, I thought I better hurry up and get it done. So I go in the bathroom, I wash my hair. So I used a diaper like a turbine on my head to collect the water from my hair. It actually worked pretty well. And then I finally got done I wiped dry with the paper towels all the rest of me. After all this someone brought me towels. That was the first day on Thursday that I ever saw a towel. There was a wheelchair in my room that was broken and I said, well, why don't you go get another wheelchair and she says, we don't have any more. This is their business to have equipment that is working. So now I have a defective wheelchair sitting in my room, taking up space. Once again, because PT can't organize anything. She stopped by at quarter to 10 asked if i had my pain pill. I told her no but she could just request one from the nurse. She said she'd be back at 10. She finally returned at 11:05. I yelled at her. She took real offense at that. She said she couldn't get back when she tried. That's just the way it is here she reiterated. We don't do schedules. She told me she wasn't here to give me a session now but to put me off until later again. I'd been waiting since 10AM. She said she'd have to get somebody else to work with me. I agreed. I realized how she operated. She would whirl in like a tornado. Start taping exercise diagrams on the walls and then say she would be back later at her convenience. I asked if they could give me a window for PT. 8-10 or 10-noon. She said they never start at 8 and that they couldn't do windows either. There is no end to the incompetency and inefficiencies at this facility. I'm making a comedy out of this but the reality is there are people in this facility that may be in life and death situations, and it is not a laughing matter for them. They have a whiteboard where you can put down pain control, when you had your last dose, when's the next one, what your pain level is when your pt schedule is etc. But nothing is filled in on them. This place is run by the seat of somebody's pants, I just don't know who's really in charge. There is a whole team of hard-working people at the bottom that are trying to do their best. They are the people that serve your meals. The wonderful Peter, who changes the ice all during the day for my knee is smiley, nice really cares. The people cleaning people, the cna's some of the nurses, but management just lets everything run helter, skelter. The PT when it happens is good. You just don't know when it's going to be Happen. All I can think of is the patients are too old to care. They just do what they're told when they're told, and they don't have any advocates. I don't fit into that mold. And there's the infamous red button. They have a handset at each bed, to operate the TV, and it has one big red button you can push if you need help. You can kind of only push it once it's either like on or off. There is no two-way communication. Then you sit and wait. You could wait an hour. If you need help going to the bathroom, good luck. There are signs all over the walls. Call, don't fall, press the red button. What a joke. I think the last scheduling issue with the PT woman was the end of everything as far as I was concerned. There would be little or no PT on the weekend so I left at noon.

Within the last year, I have had two family members -- neither a resident of the retirement community -- spend time in that new facility. This review is about the facility, not about the retirement community as I have no experience with it -- beyond meeting many delightful residents. Everyone working at Channing House is friendly -- they do a first-rate job of hiring topnotch people, not just the kind and knowledgeable nursing staff but all the employees who work behind the scenes to keep the place humming, greet visitors, drive patients to medical appointments, and bring gourmet meals to residents. Everyone gets personal attention. Our most recent experience was with the SNF, and everyone who came to visit the patient commented on how clean and cheerful it was. I was told that many of the residents of the retirement community volunteer in the SNF -- one of the volunteers said to me "we figure we are all going to spend time here at some point, so we want to make sure it's nice!" I credit Channing House with the fact that both my family members recovered from serious health setbacks and progressed to the point that they could be discharged back home. The location -- perfect for walks (and always lots of parking) -- is a nice bonus, and let us take outings to coffee shops, the nearby park, downtown library, and even Sephora.
