Gordon Manor is a truly special facility where the staff genuinely cares about the residents. Portia does an exceptional job running the facility and was consistently communicative about my dad's care, any changes, and anything our family needed to know. Most importantly, residents are treated like human beings, with dignity, kindness and respect. John was also a straight shooter from the beginning, and we always felt fortunate to have found Gordon Manor. Ultimately, my dad ended up moving to another facility to be closer to family. Even during that difficult transition, the entire staff could not have been more gracious and respectful. They never once made us feel uncomfortable, and it was obvious how much the staff genuinely cared about my dad. That meant more to our family than I can express and spoke volumes about the relationships they build with their residents. Finding the right home for a loved one with memory issues can be incredibly difficult, but choosing Gordon Manor was an easy decision. I also encourage families to review their publicly available licensing records through the California Department of Social Services. When we reviewed them, the absence of complaints and citations was remarkable, and based on our experience, not surprising. W/ one of the most cases when this pandemic started my friends and I decided to call to see if they can accept donations. We understand due to the current state and the restrictions we can't just assume. I did speak to the CEO and followed up w/ her twice before making the delivery on a Friday evening. Explained to her that we are not part of any organization, that we just want to do something nice. We teamed up w/ Heaven's Kitchen to prepare 30 meals for this facility. We wanted to make sure we had everyone covered; not just nurses but administrative staff, janitorial.. I think that during this time we saw a lot of unity. We are one.. and we are suffering together. They were short-staffed and had to get help from other areas. It was such an honor to meet the people dealing w/ this firsthand. We can complain and vent all we want - I sure am guilty of that but the bigger picture remains.. regardless if you think all of this COVID is BS or not pls be mindful of the folks working in the medical field and their patients/residents.. no visitors... I was fortunate to learn of Gordon Manor when I needed to move my mother from another assisted living facility. It is never easy to move someone in their 90s from one living situation to another and I was amazed to see my mom settled in within 24 hours, enjoying art with Taun and the overall family living environment at Gordon Manor. Gordon Manor feels like a home with hallways full of decorations leading to the dining room, library, individual/shared rooms, and the big room for group activities and concerts. Another added bonus is the 2 big patio areas and the large garden area with chickens and beautiful fruit trees. The large outside area was a big plus for my mother who loved to walk outside. Most importantly the staff at Gordon Manor encourages the residents to spend time outside in nature, something that was not common in other assisted living facilities. The entire staff is loving, attentive and caring. They treat all of the residents as if they are family, calling them by name, learning their individual likes and dislikes and, most importantly, treating them with dignity and respect. Gordon Manor does not have a high staff turn-over rate which is comforting to the residents, especially those experiencing memory issues, as was the case with my mother. They also have a high staff to resident ratio and I never felt my mother or any other resident was neglected due to low staff ratios as is common at other facilities. The entire Gordon Manor staff welcomed me and my family. I knew that mom was always well cared for and did not worry when I was not able to stop by and visit with her. We came from a dreadful facility which used to be Sunrise at Redwood City and is now called Oakmont. I could definitely go on and on about how awful the care was there, but I encourage you to read the very candid and honest and dreadful reviews about Oakmont Redwood City. Back to Gordon Manor which has captured my heart in every way. It provides the care and compassion that I could only dream of my mother having at this stage of her life. Given that she is blind, and has Alzheimer's it was definitely a concern as to was she being properly cared for and treated with dignity. Well, this most definitely did not happen at Oakmont, Gordon Manor is in comparison to the type of home we could only dream she could have. The respect and compassion shown towards the residents is genuine. It's not an act put on because the family is there watching. It's genuine and true and extraordinary and everything we could dream. My mom is an unusual case, because not only does she have Alzheimer's, but she's also blind so she's a more challenging person to care for giving her unique needs. Every single time I visit her at Gordon Manor I get emotional because the care that we had previously at Oakmont compared to Gordon Manor is so vastly different. Gordon Manor understands what it means to show compassion, respect, dignity, and genuine care. We have ample staff, which again was not present at Oakmont. We just moved my 100 years old on hospice mother from facility in Menlo Park after more than three years to Gordon Manor, imagine how bad that facility became that we were forced to move her, the management of that facility changed and became death trap, almost every day black and blue on her face or body and always hungry or testy in that place. This review is long overdue. When our mom's Alzheimer's reached the point where she could no longer live alone, we moved her to an assisted living facility. The first place was beautiful, almost like a fancy hotel. They had top notch security and a great staff; still my mom managed to escape. After her escape she was moved to another (more secure) area. She wasn't happy there, and the facility wouldn't budge, so we moved her to Gordon Manor. Gordon Manor is an older facility and seems more like a big home. Our mom also escaped from Gordon Manor and had a few minor accidents (falls). The difference was in how it was handled. Gordon Manor was always honest and direct. I'm guessing that in a corporate facility (a chain) that often policy is set in stone (hence the lockdown in another ward at the other facility), whereas Gordon Manor is a private facility. Shortly after our mom moved to Gordon Manor, she had a stroke and lost the ability to walk and talk. Almost simultaneously Covid hit. It was difficult during Covid, not being able to touch our mom, and having to visit through a window or outside in the garden. What made it bearable was the fact that it was obvious in everything the staff said and did that they truly cared about our mom. Covid hit Gordon Manor hard with multiple residents and staff becoming ill and there were multiple fatalities among the residents. I however was impressed with how Gordon Manor handled the situation. They brought in a team of experts to train them in infectious control procedures, and in an amazingly short period of time they had the disease under control. This was even more impressive given the fact that most of their residents have some degree of Alzheimer's, so would have had trouble remembering the rules. In addition, the facility is an older one with many rooms, making it harder to clean. Just to emphasize how significant this is, please realize that they completely eliminated the virus that was already endemic in the facility and then kept it from coming back, and they did this while still caring for the residents. Our mom was at Gordon Manor for a year and a half and for most of that time she needed intensive care because she was unable to stand or talk or even feed herself. In the time she was there my sister and I were impressed with the love and care our mom received. That to me is what makes Gordon Manor such a wonderful place - the staff. Our mom recently passed away. We miss her every day, but we also miss the staff from Gordon Manor. What makes an assisted living facility great is the staff; it's not how impressive the facility looks, or the amenities or the cost of care - it's the love and care the staff shows to their residents and their families, and in this Gordon Manor excels. We cannot even begin to thank them enough for the care they gave our mom in her time with them; they are truly a special group of people! read more

I am aware of the wide varieties of needs and care that the elderly may need to be required. Often you need to address the individual based on their background, this includes medical needs, family, religion, physical or mental issues, past history and ect. I am not a resident at Gordon Manor, so I cannot attest to the personalized care. I have had family here and I have visited them on a few occasions so my review is strictly based on my observations. It is a care home with approx. 65 residents, both male and female. Some have needs that require lots of attention, while others are fairly self sufficient. They offer many events at the home, including an Elvis impersonator, religious services, a singer that covered Cole Porter and Hank Williams and they offered light dancing, medical service dogs will visit as well as high school volunteers. Gordon Manor will allow some residence to own small, well behaved dogs. They have 20+ chickens in the yard (fresh eggs) and the grounds are expansive, they have a large vegetable patch (fresh veggies) and fruit trees. It feels relatively peaceful considering its a care home. In the hallways it is filled with curio cabinets with doll collections and valued china, there are paintings lining the walls many of which were painted by residents. Occasionally there are residents that have more severe issues like dementia symptoms or there are what are called, "runners" which are the residents that try to walk out sometimes out of confusion, some of the runners have ankle bracelets on just in case. I have heard and seen things that you would expect in an elderly care home. It is a care home and in theory it is a stressful place but Gordon Manor seems like a nice middle ground, still offering the standardized care but in a home-like environment. The staff seems very sweet, mostly Filipino nurses and it seems like many are of the same family. If you have to find a place for family, this seems like a good choice. read more

We moved our mom to Gordon Manor in the fall of 2023. It was refreshing to learn that their model of care is NOT one of constant staff turnover and constant rising prices. Gordon Manor has staff members who remain long-term, making care more personal and consistent. Our family has great confidence in the daily care and professionalism of the staff at Gordon Manor. We recommend Gordon Manor to anyone who is looking for well-rounded, consistent care for their loved one. The facility has a high standard of cleanliness, super caring staff, daily activities, and also has beautiful outdoors. There is individualized care as each resident's needs can be a little different. The great room is always filled with lively verbal and physical activities that keep residents active and engaged. The garden is huge and is so beautiful! The residents are greeted with sunshine, fresh air, and a wide variety of flowers, plants, and trees. Our mom enjoyed the garden the most. We are so grateful and very much appreciate all the care and attention that our mom received while she was a resident at Gordon Manor. There is no better care to be found. Full stop. Our mother spent nearly ten years at GM: when she first arrived her dementia was such that she was angry at being prevented from "going home" and would hit the staff and use foul language (shocking her offspring, if not the staff). When she passed away last week, the staff kept a regular rotation of people staying with her during her final hours--they truly treated her just like family and were poignantly affected by her death. In the intervening years, Mom enjoyed the many activities scheduled every day, and we made a point of joining her for the special events (like the awesome summer luau). Our first Thanksgiving dinner of the day was the one at GM, where the cuisine isn't at all the brown-matter institutional fodder that one might first imagine. The first Covid wave hit GM hard and the management and staff went into emergency mode, heroically so. They managed the Delta variant and the Omicron surge skillfully--our 90+ year-old mother was safe behind the saving regimen GM established, yet we could still visit Mom online or in person as long as Mom stayed indoors and we, outdoors, communicated from the other side of the window; once understanding of the risks had matured, we were able (masked) to visit Mom in the lovely outdoor gardens. My family and I are so grateful for the loving efforts GM staff extended to our family over these many years. We cannot recommend them more highly. read more

I don't not understand all the five star reviews and the glowing comments. My cousin's experience with her mom was far from even acceptable. For example, my aunt was limping, and my cousin took off her sock to find her toenail had grown all the way around the front of her big toe and very close to the skin. Why wouldn't anyone dressing her or showering her notice this? Also, one day she found that the oxygen tube wasn't installed correctly into the machine, so her oxygen level was down in the 60s. It's only because my cousin came almost every day or had someone come to check on her otherwise, would anyone have noticed? I'm hoping my cousin isn't going to get mad at me for complaining on here, but I think she should've actually reported these instances, but she was just happy to get her mom out of there as fast as she could. The only response from management was... Maybe your mother and you would be happier someplace else. Yup. Lots more to say, but those are the two most important issues. read more

Some background: My dad never stayed here, but I have visited this place and several others to search for a good place for him, as he had dementia and was getting too difficult for my mom to handle. I rate this as a 5 star after coming full circle, comparing prices, cleanliness, staff and atmosphere of several different places. The prices are lower, though not the lowest, I've seen. The grounds are tranquil with a large expanse of gardens, though not attempting to be grandiose (some other places blatantly try to dress up the common areas I'm guessing to ease family guilt for placing your loved-one. Do not be fooled by this. ) The rooms don't have showers and that bugged me at first (this was the first place I looked at) but after seeing other places and seeing the reality of assisted living, I realized that this wasn't a necessity, especially for my situation. The staff seems fine (I didn't have much interaction.) The main draw for me is Porsche, who manages the place. She was always very accessible when I had questions and seemed hands on (and kind) with both residents and employees. She came across as a serious business woman who cared about her people and place of business but guess what, she has a heart of gold. I won't go into details but from my encounters with her, this is not just a job for her. She really cares. And at the end of the day, a strong leader can determine the personality of the whole establishment and I would have trusted such a place for my dad, if I had the chance. Alas, he passed before I could even place him there. We were so close :( I encourage others who placed loved-ones into any facilities to write reviews. There aren't enough facility reviews for the elderly. Think about it, a good restaurant review is nice to have and fun to write, but these are places we are entrusting with our vulnerable family members and need our oversight. read more

My mother spent 10 years at Gordon Manor. I can not say enough good things about them. We looked extensively at homes of all price ranges before selecting them. There are numerous resources, activities, certifications, etc which many reviews highlight and all are to GordonManor's credit. These things are important, however: Above all. They loved my Mother like she was part of their family and my mother loved them! My mothers condition was such that she required a great amount of care and even more so over time. Gordon Manor had the facilities, permits and training to accomodate her situation, so she never needed to move. Gordon Manor went above and beyond for my mother: She was an artist and Gordon Manor set up a special room for her to paint and draw. It gave her an immense amount of pleasure, and they did it with out ever being asked. Some of my Moms works still hang there. A partial list of resources we appreciated over the time we were engaged with Gordon Manor - Beautiful grounds, gardens and chickens :) - Activities for all, movies, birthday celebrations, field trips for those able - Daily meals made with love - Support staff who are loving, caring and skilled - Facilitate the connection, education of family with their loved ones and each other. - Strong connection to Kaiser, my Moms HMO. This was very helpful for many needs from Pharma, Emergency, Hospice etc. etc etc. Over 10 years of having my Mom at Gordon Manor, a number of friends and family have seen her. My daughter's school chorus sang for the residents of this retirement home this morning. I really can't say anything about the care, but the facility is outstanding. It has obviously been recently renovated, and everything in the public areas was made with beautiful materials and kept clean. There were several places where it looks like residents were able to display their treasured collectibles such as antique dolls and china. Also, the paintings on the walls were really something special and I gather they were also done by a resident. Outside opens up to a courtyard and extensive gardens, large enough to walk around and enjoy the outdoors in a safe setting. Big as some city parks! They have raised garden beds for residents interested in gardening, accessible by wheelchair. They also are raising chickens! All the vegetables and eggs are used in the food service for the residents. read more

Mom is now at Gordon Manor in RWC, a 3 acre property with fruit trees, vegetable garden and chickens. she is awake, participating in activities and has gained 4lbs :) (The food at the last facility was bad & mom lost 50lbs.) The food is really really good at Gordon Manor, the plate is very colorful. The staff is cheerful & very helpful, they know how to ambulate and transfer clients. Yes it is an older building , but much brighter and room to breath. It is less expensive that the place she was at, so mom has her old caregivers back from when she was at home to help her with her activities from 11a-5p. Gordon Manor does however have more that enough staff on their own to help patients. We are paying the same overall and getting 100% better care & quality of life. We love Gordon Manor!!! It is in a residential neighborhood, so mom can also be wheeled around the block, to Starbucks, and many close by restaurants without the difficulty of getting her into a car. My mother was at another facility on El Camino that was a nightmare before that. It was "state of the art", double in price. Mom fell 3 times the first month. Mom also has Parkinson's and they let the walker get away from her. The staff was ever changing including the administrative staff. The staff was not trained & did not know how to ambulate or transport clients. The last time she fell she dislocated her shoulder. They gave Kaiser 3 different stories on how she fell. I was told by Kaiser to remove her. I received a strong message from Kaiser ER staff they did not think the facility was safe. They gave me a list of other facilities to see, including Gordon manor. I told many different people of my poor decision and my dilemma to move her. No matter who I spoke with they all seemed to have a connection in some way with Gordon Manor and it was all positive. After her last fall mom became W/C bound, mute and non responsive. They did nothing to try to get her back walking. They kept her in the W/C and shuffled her into the meditation room & parked her. They did not want to take her to Happy hour for the music. She also c/o pain on her arm I looked at it and knew it was Shingles as I am a RN. It was blistered and oozing. The RN there argued with me and would not put her in isolation as I requested, exposing other clients & staff for several days. They did nothing until Kaiser diagnosed it and ordered meds & isolation. If you are thinking you need to put your loved one in a facility I urge you to look at Gordon manor. Most of the places I looked at had openings, which in hindsight should have told me something. This is not true with Gordon Manor, you will most likely need to get on their waiting list. Well worth the wait. It is one of the best decisions I have made for mom. read more

Both my parents spent their last days here, and in the last few months of their lives I spent a lot of time there, both during normal visiting hours and late into the early morning hours. I cannot speak more highly of the quality of care my parents received, as well as the other residents. My parents each had very different care needs (my father with dementia, my mother as a hospice patient) and the staff's service to my parents was flexible and focused, and matched up well for them. The staff were positive, friendly, motivated, and so patient, engaging and caring with all the patients. They frequently met as a group for training sessions. The food was excellent, the grounds interesting and engaging, and something was always going on that residents could take part in. I also liked the fact that the partners and family members of residents were welcomed into this community, and that encouraged both visitation and interactions. On my visits both my parents (and I as well) really enjoyed sunny afternoons on the patio, sitting and chatting with other residents and their family members, as well as the staff. Both my parents had medical problems that needed attention at times, and when a specialist or nurse was required the folks in the office were quick, attentive and well aware of the care options available. I know that every family's situation is different, and that finding the right solution can be difficult. Gordon Manor would be a great match for a lot of folks, your really should give them a visit. read more

My mom was a resident of Gordon Manor for 4 years and 1 month. From the moment she arrived until her recent death, she received the most caring, personal attention from her caregivers and the administrative staff. This place is a special jewel and the opposite of a large corporate run facility. From the time my mom arrived there, she thought of it as home. My mom, had Alzheimer's and yet, she had access to the entire place, as well as, the beautiful and spacious backyard gardens where there are vegetable gardens, chickens and flower gardens. She was able to get out to the gardens on most nice days. She also participated in the many activities which included frequent live music and dancing. There was Bingo, group exercises, crosswords puzzles, parties and celebrations for all holidays. She participated in a program called Music and Memory. The activites were at a perfect level for her condition. For the four years my mom was there, she never even got a cold. I believe that is due to great efforts of the staff in keeping everything extremely clean. The kindness, care and attention my mom received was extraordinary. My mother is a current resident at the Gordon Manor. She had been in 3 previous homes that after some time decided they no longer wanted to care for my mother as she is non-verbal, and partially paralyzed due to a massive stroke. Yes, it is a distance for me to drive each day, but Gordon Manor is well worth it. The staff and facility are amazing. Their approach to care giving is top notch. I make it a point to be involved in my mother's care each and every day and have done so for the past 3.5 years. At the other facilities I felt I needed to be there just to make sure my mother actually received the care she needed and required. Often times I would be the one to take care of her personal needs and ensue she was wheeled to the dining room on time and to any activities as the caregivers were always too busy (a clear sign that the corporate owned places are way understaffed and the only goal for them is to maximize profits). Gordon Manor is a privately owned facility and what a world of difference. Every time I go there, I see caregivers actively involved with not only my mother, but also all the residents. They make it a point to include all the residents in the various daily activities and don't just park residents in their rooms in front of a TV. I appreciate the heartfelt care all of the Gordon Manor staff extend to all the residents. Going for my daily visit my mother now is no longer a chore of my having to take care of her, but an actual pleasure to just spend one on one time with her talking to her, taking her for a stroll through the gardens, or just even playing a board game. Gordon Manor has given my mother and I the gift of us enjoying the mother/daughter relationship. I can't thank them enough for all they do. But most importantly, my mother is so much happier. If you're looking for a good, safe, loving, and caring place for someone in need of a care home, don't look any further. Forget the fancy, glitzy, overpriced corporate run facilities. They can't even come close to the services and care the staff at Gordon Manor provides. We love Gordon Manor. Both my parents have dementia and they are getting excellent care. Gordon Manor is allowing my parents to keep their little dog with them and overseeing her care too. The grounds are really lovely with fountains, patios, lots of flowering plants, redwood trees, a chicken coup and vegetable garden. Gordon Manor does not feel institutional, it is full of antique furniture, lovely paintings (many by residents & the families of residents). It is a beautiful and light filled place. They have lots of activities every day that appeal to seniors (bingo, live entertainment, gentle exercise, many celebrations for birthdays & holidays). I hadn't seen my parents dance in decades and they were dancing to a pianist playing songs from the 30s and 40s at a Fathers' Day celebration. Two doctors, a podiatrist, a dental hygenist, and a beautician come on site. The staff are mostly related and know how to handle seniors in a gentle, caring way. Also this place is much more affordable than many of the assisted living chains. I am so glad we found it, my parents are much better cared for here than they were at home with caregivers, and I don't have to worry about managing caregivers anymore. read more

My Mom has been at Gordon Manor for one month and it is impossible to explain the positive changes that have occurred during this month. I cannot begin to illiterate the improvement we have seen. She had been at another facility that offered both independent and assisted living for twenty years. As she developed dementia we had moved her into the assisted living. When the dementia got so bad that we were required to have private aides around the clock we decided to look elsewhere. My Mom's doctor recommended Gordon Manor. The first couple of weeks were a bit tough, but since then she has just thrived. There are aides everywhere always engaging the residents. My Mom went from sitting, sleeping and some eating to interacting with the aides and participating in the activities offered to her, which she hadn't done in years. I cannot say enough about the quality of care she is getting. The people here are on top of everything from showering, to grooming, to health issues and are in regular contact with her doctor. Not only is my Mom doing so well, but an added bonus is that I have peace of mind that she is being well looked after. This has not been the case in years. And, I haven't even mentioned how lovely the grounds are. There are flowers, chickens in their coop, fruit trees, fruits and vegetables with paths that the residents can walk around or have an aide push them around in their wheelchairs.
