We took our puppy to Atlanta Dog Trainer for the group obedience beginner training classes. There were 5 weeks of training classes (4 with the dog, the first with just the handlers). The primary instruction was getting your dog's attention, the commands - sit, down, off, leave it, drop it and loose leash walking. Overall I was pleased with the overall instruction and experience. They did a good job of making sure the dogs didn't invade another dog's space. Homework was sent out each week to work on in sessions with the dog and this helped prepare for the next week's session. I was at my wits end and ready to give away our dog- I had tried other training programs but he would not stop biting our kids, jumping on everyone, it was just awful. We signed up for the two week board and train as a last effort with minimal expectation. All I can say is WOW!!! Tracy has been exceptional from start to finish and the follow up after he was home was icing on the cake! She followed up daily to give us a report with photos and videos and continued to check in for weeks! We have the sweetest dog and our family could not be happier with our decision to put our pup into doggie school here!! The grounds are sprawling and beautiful, the staff is friendly, and the value far exceeded my expectations. We paid $995 per week, so about 2K total. I looked at some other programs which were about 2,800 with kinda crappy looking properties and very pushy sales people. We are forever grateful to ADT and Tracy! REVISED FROM A PREVIOUS POST: I'm writing today to tell you about my bad experience with Atlanta Dog Trainer so that others don't have to experience what I experienced. I was excited to start training with them. The owner assigned us a trainer named Shelby. Shelby seemed nice enough but she was very disorganized and I found the training to be confusing. I had spoken with the owner originally who had given me some training tips but Shelby's training seemed to conflict with what the owner said, and often seemed to conflict with herself when I asked clarifying questions. At the second session, Shelby brought in a second trainer, Vanessa, who trains service dogs because I mentioned that in the future my intention is to train my puppies for service. Vanessa gave even more conflicting advice, adding to my confusion. But, the one thing that was congruent is that we should "dominate" our puppies. This type of training just felt wrong in my gut and I wish I had listened to it. I did, however, trust in them and tried to use those methods. But, It seemed to me that my dogs' behaviors were getting worse and that they were more and more anxious and frankly, seemed traumatized. I guess this "dominance" training works for some people but I found that it did more harm than good. The experience with them was so bad that I decided to do more research on dog training and found a trainer that uses positive reinforcement only. my dogs have done so much better! read more

We've used Dijon for 5 sessions and we love him! He's taught us how to help Ed through his fear of all new things, animals, and humans. Ed is becoming a more secure and confident dog and we are happy to see him enjoying his time outside and on walks instead of being scared and barking the whole time. *we have not used boarding or any other services (boarding and in house training) so I can't review that portion of the business. read more

My roommate's dog (Sage) had some problems with being friendly with other dogs at the park or simply during morning walks. She also had other behavior issues such as separating anxiety, etc. We were recommended by a friend about this place and decided to take Sage here for obedience training. We had a great experience, Sage is now very well behaved. We also learned a lot about how to change certain things about our lifestyle that would benefit Sage. I remember asking the trainer, who also happened to be the owner, on the second day that how she's so good at what she does! Especially because to me, it needs to come naturally. What she said was very interesting, I'll just quote her because I still clearly remember our conversation- "I live and breathe dogs, I've learned that dogs that misbehave are often misunderstood, and this class is where we learn what's going through the dog's mind and train them to think differently." This was really cool to know because I used to get pretty annoyed at Sage at times. They are all very patient and make the training experience very comfortable. They take the time to actually listen to your concerns and teach you lots of tricks to have a better relationship with your dog. I did a lot of research to find a trainer/behaviorist that focuses on positive reinforcement and luring versus shock collars (it is disturbing how many places rely of this), and I was able to talk with Susie an find a good match. I don't mind some hard work to help my dog, who started exhibiting reactivity around other pets when I am nearby in certain situations that has gotten worse over time. I had tried a couple trainers, and they were not experienced enough with the behaviors or did not have the environment needed, but then I got matched with Jorge at Atlanta Dog Trainer. I had read a lot of very good reviews about him, and was very happy that we get to work with him. Reactivity is complicated (and can feel hopeless and scary), and Jorge is not only super enthusiastic and positive about dogs and helping owners/guardians to understand and help them, but he is very respectful, always making sure I am comfortable and confident. He is helping me improve the trust and respect between my dog and myself, instead of just having a relationship of love and affection. My dog loves him too, and I was surprised how fast he became obedient with him, but also can melt into him when it is time for a tummy rub - that is great modeling for the dynamics we should all have with our dogs. My pup has also shown a great deal of improvement over a few sessions. My boy also has enjoyed doggie daycare services here too. It is worth the drive for excellent care. I brought my mom to help me train too, and she was super impressed with the place and very quality and in-depth instruction, as reactivity can be super stressful for everyone. One of the trainers that taught my pup's obedience class made a negative comment the first day about the breed of my dog when I introduced myself and said the breed of my dog (dogs weren't there the first day). Her ex had that breed and she had a negative thought about the breed (or the ex). A few times during the classes she would make a negative comment about my dog having to be the example for the next lesson, rolled her eyes like she dreaded it, although my dog was well behaved and caught on well. I wanted to tell her what I thought of her poor behavior but my BF kept telling me to let it go. I had him take her to the last two classes without me and was not there for her graduation. I gave my input by email but never heard back. Won't go back, although most of the trainers are probably great. I just got a new puppy and found another company to do the training. read more

She helped us learn how to keep up his training at home for the future and be more consistent and efficient. We are just immensely grateful for her!! We had our first pool experience with trainer Jorge and the teaching of our maligator Maverick how to swim. The session went great and like Jorge said in about 25 mins he'll be ready and sure enough he was swimming like a fish and even retrieving his ball from the water. Mavericks first time in water and swimming and you wouldn't even know that if you were there watching. Jorge explained his every move and kept us informed on what he was doing and why and also gave advice. Nice guy seems very knowledgeable and in tune in what's going on and what he is doing. Definitely would train with him again. The reason it's not 5 stars is because Maverick smelled like "dog" after the session he smelled bad. They could sanitize the pool they use better and I'm sure that would help! read more

We took our two large dogs to Atlanta Dog Trainer for a swimming lesson. We wanted them to have a positive experience so that they would enjoy swimming. They are three and five years old. Who knew not all dogs are natural swimmers--not even the ones with webbed feet! Our trainer Caitlyn was very friendly and professional. Our two dogs loved her at first sight and didn't have any issues with her hands-on instruction in the pool. They don't get a lot of contact with new people and can be wary and unfriendly, but Caitlyn's manner and approach made them feel safe and happy. The pool is large, sparkling clean, cool, and refreshing (it was a 94F day). The pool is accessed from a nice wood deck that is fenced. So you can relax once in the deck area because your dogs can't jump out of the pool and get loose. There is a wide, secure ramp that dogs and people use to enter the pool. It is ideal for new swimmers and seniors to enter and exit without the need to jump or struggle. Our dogs were a little hesitant to enter the pool, but Caitlyn was patient encouraging them. When in the pool they were afraid of the new experience at first. They gradually got used to swimming and we agreed that they had a solid introduction to the pool. We will be back soon to beat the heat with our pups and get them more comfortable with swimming. We appreciate the option to rent the pool privately. Swimming is an important activity for us during the summer because it's too hot to do much else outdoors. We felt that our dogs had become bored and depressed with the lack of activity, and mental/emotional stimulation. Now we can develop new skills and activities around swimming with them. She was fabulous and gave me the full run down meeting on how to continue his training after his session. She was available to answer and questions I had after he returned home. I also drop my dog off daycare here everyday and he has a blast. Great way for him to get an ample amount of exercise and exposure to other dogs. As a bonus, the team gives him a free rinse anytime he gets super muddy during the day so he is clean before pickup. Highly recommend, only place I trust with my boy! read more

Competent and caring, the staff at Atlanta Dog Trainer are exceptional at managing canines. Nine years ago, my German Shepherd and I participated in obedience classes that resulted in a perfectly trained dog. When I rescued a Lab from the North Fulton Humane Society, I called Atlanta Dog Trainer before I adopted the dog since the dog had not been house trained despite being 1 1/2 years old. I received a call back on a Saturday evening with explicit instructions on how to train our new family member. Exceptional service. Why would someone call me back on a Saturday evening- because the owner is consciousness, knowledgeable and cares deeply about the welfare of dogs. Airey was our trainer and she was great. Taking our dog Ava to Atlanta Dog Trainer was so worth while. Ava is a rescue and we didn't know how to handle her behavioral issues or lack of socialization and felt overwhelmed. We learned so much about our dogs needs, and how to predict her behavior, that we no longer feel overwhelmed and have not had any problems come up since training that we didn't know how to handle. We also learned basic commands, such as coming when we call her name, down, off, leash walking. We learned activities to build her confidence and stimulate her mind. I'm so glad we decided to get training, and Airey was great with Ava. I felt she really cared about her. DO NOT BOARD HERE! Should have listened to our gut! The first day we came in for a temperament test, one of my dogs jumped out of the back of the SUV after seeing a group of dogs (while trying to put his harness on) and went to play with them. The staff was incredibly rude and obnoxious making faces and comments from afar while we were trying to retrieve the dog. While I understand the dog should not have done that, that reaction was not expected by a dog training/"dog loving" facility. We immediately got a bad feeling and decided we wanted to leave. The owner, Susie, came out right away and apologized profusely saying that she reprimanded her staff and admitted that it was very unprofessional. Since we were there and she (as well as a few other staff members) apologized, we went ahead and took the temperament test for both of our bull terriers figuring we got off on the wrong foot. They passed of course. :) We were only a few days shy of our trip and made the decision to board them there for four days/three nights. Ignoring the initial red flags, we came in the next few days and left our dogs with them. All seemed fine. We left the facility and headed to the airport. THIS IS WHERE IT GETS GOOD!!!!!!!!! Being a dog training facility, we were in shock when we got a call after 25 minutes of leaving the farm telling us or somebody we knew to come and get our dogs with no other options. They said that the rescue was on the sofa in the lobby with an invisible fence around him not allowing the staff to remove him. Keep in mind, WE WERE ON OUR WAY TO THE AIPORT when this occurred and they knew this. With no other option provided to us, we raced back and got both of our dogs. When we got to the facility, the dog was being nicely walked on the leash outside to the play area with one of the staff. I asked, "how did you get him off the couch" and the staff replied that he got off himself. They also said that it's common for a rescue to exhibit such behavior. We had already discussed this on the day of the temperament test prior to boarding and they assured me that they understood and were very well versed in their abilities to deal with this. It baffles me that a dog training facility could not take care of such a small incident like that and gave up on him so easily. All they did was have to offer him a small treat and he would have moved from the sofa since he loves food and treats. :) By the way, they offered my dog training so he could come in the future!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If they couldn't handle that situation, it makes me question their abilities to train and handle dogs in their care. After we got our dogs, they tried to tell us about his anxiety and more about the invisible barrier he had formed. We just got our dogs and left as we were very much in a hurry to get back to the airport. In order for us to make our trip, we had to inconvenience a lot of people to take care of them at the last minute. We laugh now, but at the time it was VERY STRESSFUL and DISSAPOINTING. They didn't care that we entrusted them with our furbabies nor that we were in route to the airport. We do not recommend taking your dogs here and kicked ourselves for not listening to our gut. Should have left that place the moment their true colors showed when my dog "interrupted" their training session. Their last words were "we hope you catch your flight". Keep that in mind when considering this place as an option. One last comment, when your website states this: Our primary goal in Doggie Daycare Atlanta is to release your dog's stress and energy and to mentally stimulate them while in our care. I brought my one year puppy for obedience training over the summer for 2 weeks to Atlanta Dog Trainer and I was pleasantly surprised with the way that Diane and the other trainers were able to get rid of Rio's bad habits. It's been several months now and we are very happy with how he is behaving. He's now walking without pulling, finding his place on his bed with little instruction and not barking while we eat to get attention (which was my biggest concern). Rio learned to wait at the door without darting off into the street. Now we can take him out on our front porch without a leash and he will wait there until we release him. I highly recommend Atlanta Dog Trainer and the entire staff there. I was hesitant at first but now I'm a huge fan. Rio seems like a completely different dog and we love continuing his training when we take him there to board on weekend getaways! read more

This place is a dump...There is no parking available for cars on a narrow gravel road. A short step grade is available..but be careful because of the steep incline that you don't get blocked in by another vehicle. It looks like a rundown ranch style house. The entrance is located in the rear. The pool for dogs is dirty and not well kept up. The agility training looks very small with old obstacles for the dogs. I don't see any room inside where a dog can get lessons. The boarding looks very dirty where the house dogs. It seems the staff is being run by very young teenagers. I will Not bring my dog there again. VERY DISAPPOINTED. read more

We have sent two puppies to Atlanta Dog Trainer for board and train two week stays. Our Rhodesian Ridgeback was trained in 2007 and our Field Spaniel just came home yesterday. I highly recommend the board and train program for anyone who can afford it. It isn't about tricks - it is about manners. Let me tell you about our most recent experience. Poppy comes from a strong showing field spaniel line. She is adorable but she was so busy that we were hardly able to cuddle her. She bounced rather than walked, she jumped rather than stood, she snatched whatever she wanted, she scratched at doors, she cried in her crate, and my kids asked, "why do you like her?". Basically, she was wild. Why did I tolerate this, you ask? Probably because I knew that I was going to pay the $1000 for a full two weeks of board and train (maybe also because my husband and I both work full-time, travel for our jobs, have three kids, own another dog, and we had just moved). So, I scheduled Poppy's two weeks with Diane. When we dropped her off, Diane laughed at me when I admitted that I hadn't even taught Poppy how to sit. We had had her for 3 months. You are asking, what were you thinking? I was thinking MAGIC and it worked. We picked Poppy up yesterday and it seems like she just aged through the whole crazy puppy stage. With Diane, she waited at the door, walked into the room on a leash, greeted us calmly, sat, sat with distraction, stayed on her place, and laid down. Now, you are asking, how are you going to keep that up? We are going to do 3 5-1 minute sessions a day and reinforce it all with the behaviors we learned. But, the real part is that she is suddenly a disciplined dog - it's the manner. We watched a movie with her on the floor next to us last night. She laid calmly with us for two hours, no biting fingers or tugging on our clothing. She let the baby climb over her and didn't wrestle her to the ground. She spent the morning today walking around the house and waiting outside my shower (on leash) - not crying in a crate. She may still try to pick up a toy that isn't hers but when I call her enthusiastically she comes and I get it away from her easily. She likes to be praised. Stop struggling with your decision to get a puppy and send her off to Atlanta Dog Trainer for two weeks. I promise you it will be one of the best $1000 you have ever spent. read more

I sent my Goldendoodle for a 2 week training session with trainer, Elizabeth. He came home a trained dog with the basic training. He's 6 mos. The facility is a home. I won't send my dog anywhere else. I boarded him for a week during Thanksgiving. He didn't follow me when I left him. I never feel bad leaving Leo there. I can't say how much we appreciated everything that the Atlanta Dog Trainer and it's staff did for our two pups. They both did the 2 week board and train where they learned so much! They are the best around, not only did they do an amazing job training our two dogs but they treated us and our dogs with the utmost respect and care we could have asked for. My girlfriend and I had a family situation that came up and we had to leave our dogs there a little longer than we had planned but the entire staff went out of their way to help us out as much as possible and moved things around so that they could keep our dogs a little longer and treated them like their own and loved our two fur babies. This facility is great for new dog owners to help them learn how to work with their dogs. I took my pup to the beginner course with Mike and I had fun every week. The participation dropped off significantly which made the lessons more personal and Mike had tons of great tips on how to work with every kind of dog. Overall my pup now still is a disaster with jumping on people no matter what we do but she knows some very cute tricks. I didn't board with the facility because it is much farther out of Atlanta than I originally thought but if I was closer I would definitely board my pup there just based on the great space and kind people who work there read more

Susie, who is the owner of Atlanta Dog Trainer, is such a life saver. I brought my dog Nick to her last fall because he was human and animal aggressive. I had adopted him from an animal control and he had been living with me, my boyfriend and our other dog Shenzi for about 5 months. She immediately knew that he was showing all of these aggressive behaviors because he was extremely fearful. I had previously taken him to another trainer and had absolutely no luck with them. She explained that the negative reinforcement techniques this particular trainer used only increased Nick's fear and anxiety. She showed me some positive reinforcement techniques that I have been practicing with Nick for about 6 months, and they have really helped Nick become a more confident dog. We are able to invite "strangers" into our house now. Nick still gets a little stressed out by the newcomersat first, but he is no longer growling and barking and biting at them. He calmly and cautiously interacts with them until he decides that they are not a threat (which is only taking about 5 minutes now!), and then he's their best friend. read more

BEWARE!!!! I boarded my dog at ATL dog trainer for a week thinking she would get the best care possible. It turns out that my assumptions were VERY wrong. My dog came home with "a mild case of diarrhea" according to the staff. What she had was a virus and full blown case of kennel cough. After taking her to the doctor upon returning home, I got her diagnosis and was told that they would take care of any medical expenses. 2 weeks later I received the following: We are diligent in cleaning our facility and take every precaution to prevent illnesses. We go above and beyond the standards. Unfortunately there is only so much any facility can do to totally prevent airborne viruses from being present. It is no different than you taking your child to a daycare facility full of other children and it coming home with a cold. It is in the air and while some children may not get sick, others may. We constantly bleach our facility including the dog bowls and water buckets. The dog bowls are bleached after each feeding and twice a day. We have a mobile vet come inspect our facility on a regular basis. "While we do regret your dog became ill and hope she is feeling better. We advised everyone of the risk and were completely transparent. You signed two waiver stating that you were aware and that you elected to board your dog with us and understood the risk. Below is one of the waivers you signed in which you stated you were aware of potential risk and would accept all medical responsibilities; which include vet bills. I affirm that I have been told about the concerns of the Upper Respiratory infection (URI) and the potential of dogs contracting it. Although, I recognize that to the best of my knowledge my dog(s) is healthy; I am aware that it could catch this when interacting with other dogs. I understand these concerns, and I am willing to board, train or swim my dog understanding the risks. URI is contagious to other dogs and generally lasts 7-14 days. If a dog is suspected of having a URI, Atlanta Dog Trainer LLC will isolate the dog in a room of the house or if possible at the vet's office. I understand having all vaccines does not guarantee my dog will not get the virus. There are many cases of a dog being vaccinated and still getting the virus. Upper Respiratory Infection is a viral infection, not bacterial. There are over 40 viruses and only 10 are covered by the Bordetella Shot. I recognize that Atlanta Dog Trainer, LLC will not be held responsible/liable should my dog catch any viral or bacterial disease given they have done everything to ensure the safety of my dog. I will assume all responsibilities medically and emotionally for my dog should it get ill under the care of Atlanta Dog Trainer, LLC." Despite the veterinarian saying they were liable, they pretended that they would make this right and hid behind a 10 page waiver weeks later. NEVER AGAIN. Take your animals to a place that feels responsible for their care and well being. read more

Very disappointed in my experience with Atlanta Dog Trainer. I was supposed to bring in my dog for a Board and Train. I brought my dog in for his interview day, which was fine but he was nervous as expected. We completed all the paperwork and I offered to pay the deposit then and there. I was told not to worry about it and we would get it taken care of when I was back and that my reservation was locked in - I chose very specific dates as I knew I would be out of town. I had hoped to bring in my dog for a daycare day to get him more comfortable but got some unexpected news when I had originally planned to. I get a text 3 days before I plan to drop him off for board and train saying they can't take him anymore since he didn't come in for a temperament test. While I can understand needing to do a temperament test, it was never made clear to me it was required. I offered to bring in my dog ASAP before I left to complete this test and was told it was too late now. I rarely write reviews, but am shocked at the poor communication on their end and how they just don't care what my dog is supposed to do now that I have minimal time to find a new place for him. read more

Susie and team are terrific! We almost gave on our Border Collie but called Atlanta Dog Trainer with one last effort. Susie spent a lot of time on the phone with me and two assessment sessions before we enrolled in the board and train program. Two weeks later we got a different dog back! He was well socialized and exposed to a multitude of things that allowed him to not get so wound up with unfamiliar stimulations. More importantly she taught us how to read his body language. I just picked up my new puppy from 2 weeks of board and train with Diane. I am thrilled with his improvement in just two weeks of training. He is no longer puppy biting us, is calmer with my senior dogs, and is much more confident and obedient. I will definitely be taking him back to Diane for more advanced training. I have a one year old 45 pound dog who goes to day care here and we have also done agility. Day Care: They are open for day care 7:00-7:00. My dog comes home exhausted! A little dirty, but that is expected. The temperament test was almost overly thorough, which is good because then I know that the other dogs will be behaved. They split the groups based off of size and energy level. They also have the ability to remove a dog if they are getting overly excited or if they are over it. I even got a text one day with a picture of my dog. My only concern, which is mainly only for my freakish dog, is the fence. My dog got excited to see me and started to CLIMB the fence. She didn't make it all the way up but she probably could've. Again, my dog is a freak of nature and climbs like a cat, but still made me a litter nervous. But there is someone always outside. My dog came home with a pretty long scratch one day and Susie apologized to me profusely and gave me 5 free days, which I appreciated and thought was kind. My dog also started limping one day and they removed her from play and called me immediately. She was fine! Just over did it probably. But I thought that showed how well they were watching the dogs. Usually when I get there, there are at least two people watching Overall: YES Agility: I took beginner agility and beginner intermediate. I was so surprised how fast the dogs learn. It was great. Sonja is fantastic. One of the dogs just wasn't getting it at first and I could tell the owners felt bad. She knew exactly what to say for them to feel better and now their dog rocks it. I am definitely going to continue with the rest of the classes. Only bummer is how long the course takes. The 6 week class ended up taking 10ish weeks I think. If Sonja goes out of town, its cancelled, and threat of rain it's cancelled. I guess that's really no one's fault but I ended up missing a few classes because I didn't plan for it to be so long. Overall: YES Training: I took three private classes with Ji and he was fantastic. The first class my dog was already rolling over and weaving between my legs pretty well! And when we came back for the second class and my dog decided she wasn't going to participate, Ji knew how to get her to refocus. I really enjoyed it and thought it was worth it. Overall: YES Boarding: I have never boarded there, but I plan to. At first it made me nervous because it's a "farm" type setting but it looks good and the people there really care. read more

I took my two dogs, Samson and Klondike, to board there. Sammy is not a friendly dog to strangers, but he took immediately to Sonya. He didn't even give a look back at us. It was "see ya later". They were gone! When we came back to pick them up four days later, they were so happy and tired, they slept for four days. We used the pet taxi to board them next. What a great idea. Sammy and Klondike (who usually don't like anyone coming to the house), got into the van without much difficulty and off they went. They were so happy when they came home. They keep looking for the taxi again. They absolutely love this place. By the way, these are not little dogs. Samson is a Pyranees/Akita mix and Klondike is an Aust. Cattle Dog/Irish Terr./Scottish Deerhound Mix. They take up room and if they are not happy, you know it. They love it there! Try it out. read more

I can not say enough wonderful things about Atlanta Dog Trainers and specifically Ji Kim! He took my unmanageable Rottie and turned him into the sweetest well-behaved dog. We took both the Basic and Intermediate classes with Ji. The facility is amazing. I highly recommend them!!! There are many closer dog trainers to where I live and I drive the 30 miles each way just to go to them. read more

I cannot say enough! I did Board and Train for two weeks with Elizabeth for my pup Ansley! Elizabeth was so sweet and fully explained everything that Ansley was going to learn and the exact schedule she would be on while there. While Ansley was there, I got photo updates on her almost daily. She was a rescue pup who was treated for parasites previously. While she was there the staff noted some worms in her stool. They treated her and even took her to the vet at no charge (other than the wormer). I was updated about the entire thing. For me, another bonus was the socialization my little pitbull puppy got while being there. She LOVED IT! They did behavior assessments prior due boarding which made me feel comfortable with my timid puppy. On top of all that, my pup learned all kinds of things and is so easy to deal with now! We received an hour lesson while picking her up. I know I will board her there in the future, no cages and staying indoors for this pup! Long review, but totally deserving! read more
