Music through the whole game is ridiculous. No basketball game sounds at all just a deejay and rap for 4 quarters and a halftime. Jumbotro is so big it distracts from the game and shows the game in reverse of what is happening half of the time. All employees were great. Facility is good. Experience is not basketball. read more

Despite the expensive ticket (the most for any pro sports game in Atlanta) for a .500 team (at the time of review), the experience at an Atlanta Hawks game is a great one. Friendly staff, a variety of socializing and dining environments, and fantastic in-game entertainment make attending a game in person a must for basketball fans. Definitely a franchise that has seen some ups and downs over the years. Dating back to the days of Mr Wilkins .... interesting this could apply to Lenny (the old coach) or Dominique (probably only MJ could dunk better) to today and the new crew running the court led by Tre Young, they have seemingly (even in down years) been able to field a team that could at minimum add some excitement to the game. I had never seen them live until the playoffs a couple years ago, and it was against the wizards - but, playoff hoops bring an energy like no other sports event (if you like NBA Basketball). The team is full of rising stars and entertain almost every night. They make for an enjoyable team to watch with a dynamic scorer that can light it up from distance or diving to the rim. read more

The Atlanta Hawks provides a great game experience and atmosphere. The cheerleaders are entertaining and very engaged during the game and their performances. They also have plenty of different acts and contests during timeouts for fan engagement that also give you opportunities to win prizes. If your privy to one of the many clubs available, your game experience is thrust to the next level as they are all inclusive which provides you with unlimited food and beverage options including beer, wine, and spirits depending on which club your in out of the Delta 360 Club, Harrah's Chef's Club, Atlanta Social Club, the Concert Club or the Player's Club. The Hawks also play a good brand of basketball that is very competitive. Trae Young is a must see young burgeoning star in the league that keeps you in edge of your seat waiting to see what he's going to do next. I'm giving the Hawks 4 stars because on Yelp, 4 stars means "Yay! I'm a fan." If I rated the Hawks based on their historical performance on the court, I'd give them 3 stars. I must preface this review by saying I am an Atlanta transplant. I grew up as and still am a die-hard San Antonio Spurs fan. However, since moving to Atlanta in 2000, the city and the Hawks have slowly grown on me. The Hawks are my "No. 2" team. I support them and consider myself a fan. I've attended Hawks games at Philips Arena every year for the past 13 years. At a minimum, I attend when the Spurs are in town. Over the past dozen+ years, I've seen almost all 30 NBA teams roll through Philips. Any time the Hawks are on TV, whether it's Fox Sports South ("FSHAWKS"), SportSouth, etc, I'm always tuned in. If the Hawks are playing on national TV (TNT or ESPN), I still prefer the local broadcast with Bob Rathbun and Dominique Wilkins. They know the team better. I'm also a fan of reporter Jerome Jurenovich and analyst Mike Glenn (the "Stinger"). If I'm in my car or in the shower and the Hawks are playing, my radio is tuned to Steve Holman's broadcast. My earliest memories of the Hawks are, like most people, the Dominique era. Dominique was one of the best dunkers in the NBA Showdown, NBA Live, and NBA Jam video games. Dominique was really the only true NBA superstar the Hawks ever had, which is kind of baffling to me considering the city of Atlanta. Atlanta is one of the top NBA media markets. Also, I once heard the "statistic" that more NBA players make Atlanta their off-season home than any other city in the country. Fans love NBA basketball down here, but the fans don't love the Hawks. Ted Turner and Turner Broadcasting/Time Warner owned the Hawks from 1977 until 2004, when the team was sold to Turner's son, son-in-law, and other businessmen known as the "Atlanta Spirit." I didn't start following the Hawks closely until the 2000-01 season, when the Hawks' 1999 draft pick Jason Terry led the team. That season would be the second of nine straight losing seasons for the Hawks, almost a decade. The first eight of those seasons, we didn't make the playoffs. I liked Jason Terry, but he wasn't a franchise player. Moves were made to surround Terry with better players and eventually, a "Big 3" was formed in Atlanta with Terry, "Big Dog" Glenn Robinson, and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. The best that group could do was 35-47. The team went through three coaches in three seasons (Lon Kruger, Terry Stotts, and Mike Woodson) and the Spirit came in and blew up the team. The Hawks were atrocious. It was all capped off by the 13-69 season (.159 winning percentage) in 2004-05, which was the NBA's worst record that year. That terrible season resulted in the No. 2 pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, in which the Hawks made one of its worst all-time draft decisions ever: they drafted Marvin Williams instead of Chris Paul or Deron Williams. Marvin Williams turned out to be an OK player, but Chris Paul and Deron Williams turned out to be two of the best point guards in the NBA. What was mind-boggling was the Hawks needed a point guard, yet they drafted a forward, of which the team already had many. At the time, the thinking was Marvin Williams had the highest ceiling of any player in that year's draft class. CP3 and D-Will, however, were already proven commodities. The 2005 draft was one of two major blunders that summer of then-GM Billy Knight's career. Knight also oversaw the trade of Boris Diaw and two draft picks to Phoenix in a sign-and-trade for Joe Johnson. Joe Johnson was signed to a maximum salary contract and would be the face of the Hawks franchise for the next seven seasons. The Joe Johnson era in Atlanta was not a bad one. We made the playoffs the last five seasons. That's pretty good if you consider how bad we were the decade prior. The nucleus of Johnson, Josh Smith, Al Horford, and Marvin Williams (the latter three all Hawks draft picks) produced many wins. However, that group could never advance past the second round of the playoffs. June 2012: Enter Danny Ferry as new Hawks GM (replacing Rick Sund). In just a couple weeks on the job, Ferry was already able to trade away Johnson's enormous contract to Brooklyn for a bunch of role players *and* trade away Marvin Williams to Utah for PG Devin Harris. Amazing. Ferry means business and the next year should be exciting for Atlanta fans as we wait to see who the team gets with all of its salary cap space and pending big name free agents set to be on the market. I have faith in Danny Ferry, especially with his experience working in the Spurs' front office. He has given the Hawks the opportunity to sign a superstar like Dwight Howard or Chris Paul... or both. read more

The Hawks get one star for being a professional franchise, and one star for the show they put on at Philips Arena for games. And by performance, I'm talking about everything except what you're seeing on the court. Hawks games have turned into a place to be seen and to spot celebs sitting court-side. The team has been abysmal for the last few years, and hasn't made the playoffs since 1999. A large number of fans at Hawks games are there to see the superstars on visiting teams, not the Hawks. Atlanta's definitely a basketball town (huge TV ratings for NBA playoffs in Atlanta), and if the Hawks could ever put together a consistent level of play the fans would start to come back. I attended State Farm arena on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, to watch them play the Washington Wizards. After talking to an usher, I found out the arena had recently (7 months ago) been renovated. I knew the team had a terrible record, and that was probably why I was able to see the game for $12, along with the fact that the Wizards were doing terrible too. My ticket was halfway up the arena behind the visitor's backboard. The arena was only half full, but I was able to watch an NBA game in a brand new arena, for a very cheap price. I'm a Lakers fan, but I enjoyed watching the Hawks and was actually sad when they lost, 131-117. Wish I could have seen a Hawks game when Dominique Wilkins was still playing, but I'm sure I couldn't have paid just $12 to watch that game. I was happy to see old Vince Carter and Jeremy Lin are second string Hawks. Got to see Carter slam dunk. Overall, a very good experience, and I'm glad I went. read more

Wow. We had such a wonderful time at our first Hawks game. Admittedly, I'm not the most knowledgeable NBA fan, but they make this such a full-fledged approach to entertainment. It's not just basketball when you go to a game. Loved all of the extra entertainment thrown in for halftime and timeouts. Another peripheral that I appreciate is the experience the Hawks have at Philips. In other cities, the branding and housewarming feel that teams make doesn't match up as much. Gotta say that the Hawks take great pride and really roll it out for Atlanta. read more

Ahhh COME ON guys!!!! Where is the love because I am NOT feeling any here for the Hawks in this room today! I am new to the "A" but I am a die hard sports fan. I brought 7 (that's right) tix to see Hawks v Nets and we were NOT disappointed! Most of the ladies of my family came out and we represented! Even my 60yo aunt had an outstanding time! What is there NOT to love about these guys!?!?! I'm from Chicago so of course I'm loving Kirk Hinrich (former Bull) but Teague is a powerhouse and stole the show!!! The half time show was great, I love all that little stuff they add in to make the entire experience totally worthy. Win or lose, you gotta show love for your home team guys, come on, GET in the GAME. I was almost depressed to see so many empty seats, if you want them to win, you gotta show them love...I'll definitely be returning and BTW, they WON! It was an AWESOME game!!! I'm very much fascinated about the growth of the team, they are doing an amazing job and they remain grounded. I sure hope they keep it up. When we became members the beginning of year 2014, I was a bit disappointed that the fans were not supporting the team so much. The only time that the arena gets full was when a star player from another team played against the Hawks. We could walk in the Red Ciroc bar without reservation and still get great seats, you can't do that anymore. It's packed all the time. I'm not sad about that at all, it's quite the opposite. It's about time they showed up. It's definitely much more fun now, crazy Hawks fans everywhere!!! Even celebrities and sports personalities check out the game more often than beginning of the year. I also love the halftime performances of children from local schools of different counties. "Harry The Hawk" mascot is quite entertaining as well, you never know what he'll do, he dances, he sings, and do other crazy stuff. We had the second best start in the NBA and are cruising our way through to being one of the most feared teams to play in professional basketball. If you haven't been a fan through the ups and downs of the past decade, then I ask you to hop on the bandwagon now; buy some tickets, and make your way down to Phillips Arena for the Hawks next home game. We have a star-studded team, that consistently puts on powerful performances. If you doubt me, turn on your television for a preview... Extra Advice: try out STATS or Taco Mac for dinner beforehand. Both are great sports bars near the arena that will get you pumped up for the game. Also, consider taking MARTA. MARTA puts you right at the entrance to the arena, it's cheap, and makes for a smooth exit as well. Why not 5 Stars? It has more to do with Phillips Arena than the Hawks basketball team...They will get 5 stars from me once they update some of their technology. The television "playback" screens are old-school. The clarity should be HD considering the arena is named "Phillips Arena." GO HAWKS! read more

I am a big NBA fan and that has developed into me working with stadiumjourney.com doing arena reviews and becoming a season ticket holder for my local NBA team The Charlotte Hornets and also developing my own blog detailing my experience as a season ticket holder. I say all of this so you will know that I know what I'm talking about concerning rating NBA arenas. The Atlanta Hawks organization at the State Farm Arena rivals my favorite NBA arena (The Quicken Loans Arena - Cleveland Cavaliers). Very clean and spacious with friendly staff and awesome affordable food. I paid $21 for a big hot ham and cheese on Texas toast, fries, a souvenir cup and a box of m&ms. If you know anything about normal NBA arena food prices that meal would have cost me at least $35 - $45 in any other arena *incredible pricing*. The sound system while not having the heart stopping base like Quicken Loans Arena it was very impressive. The giant score board was high quality and the side player stat monitors had the pictures of the in game players likenesses moving around as they switched into and out of the game or did something great on the court (I've never seen anything like that in any other arena). The anoucer had a fun personality that was very much part of the games entertainment and just about every time out there was a game, skit, or giveaway. This organization knows how to treat a fan. The team needs to learn how to win but with so much side entertainment going on even a loosing night with the Hawks is going to be a seriously good time. If you can visit and haven't I suggest you find out what you are missing. read more

Hawks always seemed like an A-OK team as long as I can remember them. They had decent players such as Dominique Wilkins, Dikembe Mutombo, Joe Johnson, etc. They even had decent coaches like Lenny Wilkens. But Atlanta never won a championship. Actually, they never even made it to the Eastern Conference finals. What a sad franchise. They probably had their best chance in the 90's when there were coached by Lenny Wilkens and had Steve Smith, Mookie Blaylock, Dikembe Mutombo, and Christian Laettner. The fact is, the Hawks never put together a contender. They made a lot of boneheaded moves like drafting Marvin Williams in 2005 when they could've gotten Deron Williams or Chris Paul. The atmosphere is full of energy. I've worked here off an on for the past year through a temp agency. The work is definitely fast paced. I enjoy do the work meeting new people and just seeing everyone enjoying they're selves. However they need to reevaluate the staff that's there working directly for the arena.. A lot of them have nasty attitudes and does not no how to talk to people. I have heard a lady curse at individuals as they was trying to understand the directions that was being given. Today I experience that with a lady that wouldn't tell me her name all I know is she helps or services the owners she said. But she was highly rude and very unprofessional. She talked to me as if I was a child. Which I learned other people has had an bad encounter with her as well. She has braids in her hair if that will help in case this reaches management.. we are there to work not get torn down and it should always be an enjoyable environment no matter who you are or how important or unimportant you think an individual are!!! But like I stated this is a wonderful place to work !! read more

I just had the absolute worst experience from a box office employee of the Atlanta Hawks. I arrived at the box office this morning to purchase tickets at 915am because the Philips Arena website states the box office opens at 9am. I was a bit surprised that the "hours of operation" decal on the window states that box office doesn't actually open until 930am, but hey whatever I can wait 15 minutes, no problem. I stood next to the Dominique Wilkins statue until someone opened the blinds at 933am. As I approached the window I was "greeted" by a woman with extremely poor body language and equally bad attitude who said, "yes, may I help you?" I responded with a warm smile and a "good morning" figuring she was just having a bad day. She in turn rolled her eyes and simply asked, "Yes, how may I help you?" I then asked if they had any tickets for the April 1st game against the Cavaliers. She responded with, "sir that game is in April" to which I replied, "yes, I know.... I'd like to buy tickets to that game." Again she rolled her eyes at me and said, "we don't have tickets for sale for that game yet" I responded with ,"ok cool, when do tickets for that game go on sale?" She then gave me the eat shit look while shrugging her shoulders and said, "I don't know." Needless to say I said, "thank you" and walked away before my attitude kicked in. I absolutely cannot believe the Atlanta Hawks would hire such a miserable human being to represent the franchise on the "front line." I have had Atlanta Falcons season tickets for 14 seasons and one thing I know for sure is Arthur Blank would not have someone with such poor customer service skills be in a position to face potential customers. I intended on purchasing 3 tickets for the April 1st game to surprise my son who's birthday is on the same day.... we will be going to see the Braves play opening weekend instead. read more

So Im from NY and this weekend my bf and I went to Atlanta for his bday and went to the Hawks game. It was his first basketball game. I also paid for a happy birthday message to be displayed during halftime but never saw it. The first problem. Then when I went to ask the staff what happened the floor seaters did not know how it works and was sent to Guest Services, who also did not know then Membership services who said it comes on the side panels. So we missed it and it won't come up again. Then i purchased my tickets from the actaul box office. We get to our seats and at about half time a group of 3 comes to sit next to us in seat 7,8, and 9. We had 5 and 6. The only problem is there was no seat 6, it was skipped The game was sold out and we had to stand in the walk way until they figured it out. Which went into the 3rd quarter, we are still standing. Eventually we just asked for a refund and left. smh not a good experience. The missing seat was blamed on construction. read more

I'm a Pistons fan but I have faith in the Hawks. They have a good front court but need a more compelling PG, SG, and SF in the starting lineup. I respect Josh Smith's game and I'm glad he's not so hell bent on flinging 3's all the time anymore. Honestly a better PG would help tons, as Teague leaves a lot to be desired. The bench needs to get a little deeper as well. As for the fans, all these Atlanta people want to blame us people from other cities for the poor turnout, but that would only make sense if everybody that grew up in Atlanta moved away as adults. If you grew up here and you're now an adult and you STILL don't go to the games, then you really have no business expecting me or anybody else to buy season tickets for a team we didn't grow up watching. Rooting for a team as an adult is more about remembering your Childhood. The games I've gone to though have been fun and it's a positive environment for people of all ages. Philips Arena is a nice arena for a basketball game as well. Most of the seats are good no matter how far away you are. Again, it is a real shame that all these born-and-raised Atlanta residents look to the same people they scoff at and call "carpetbaggers" to front all the ticket money. read more
