To their credit, too, the staff were all very accommodating as I was working around meetings and on/off my phone like a rude person would be. I got my time with the appropriate people but they understood I was not in the mood to make small talk and got me out of there quickly. If I had to find something to nitpick: I did overhear another staff member speaking with an older client and she was quite unprofessional. Don't know the backstory there, but it might have been better to take their conversation to a more private space. Also, they were booked out 3 months for a preventative exam, but then didn't confirm my appointment in any way. It'd help efficiency in the office flow if a simple follow up had been provided one or two days in advance.

I had my regular six month cancer screening visit at the Hampstead, NC, location yesterday. As has…read morealways been the case, both with cancer screenings and two Mohs Surgeries, it was an excellent experience. Wait times are very short. The providers and their assistants are very competent, congenial, caring, and efficient. Yesterday I was cared for by medical assistant Riley and Physician Assistant Kaitlin Wilson. Both were very thorough and inspired my confidence. I very highly recommend this exceptional practice!

I paid $100 for absolutely nothing, except to be told to use sunscreen, which I already do on a daily basis. Very, very unprofessional office and I told my primary care doctor to stop referring business there. She apologized and said that they had had a couple of recent complaints. They are more about cosmetic surgery than helping regular people with rashes or issues.

If you are looking for proactive care, competent front-office staff, or a medical team that honors its own protocols, stay as far away as possible. The Waiting Game- The process is a mess from the start. It took four months just to get a referral approved and an appointment set. Once you actually arrive, checking in is just a formality to sit in the lobby for what feels like an eternity, only to be rushed through the actual exam once you finally get into a room. Inflexible and Narrow-Minded Care- Don't bother asking about any secondary concerns. They strictly refuse to look at anything not explicitly mentioned on the referral. Even if you are sitting right in front of them with a visible issue, they won't lift a finger unless the paperwork allows it. Their "knowledge base" seems entirely dependent on cutting pieces out of you, the doctor explicitly stated she had no idea what my skin was doing and that a biopsy was the only solution. Broken Promises & Gatekeeping- The most egregious failure, is the lack of communication between the physicians and the administrative staff. The Agreement- The doctor told me it was "impossible" to diagnose without a biopsy during a flare-up. She instructed me to walk in immediately during a flare so they could finally get a sample. The Reality- When a flare-up finally occurred, I called to confirm--only to be met by Heather at the front desk. The Result- Heather flatly refused to honor the doctor's instructions, refused to consult with the doctor, and told me it would be days before I could even get a call back. This office is a revolving door of delays, ego, and medical negligence. Save your time, your money, and your skin, go somewhere that actually values patient outcomes.

I know their temporary status because they shared that tidbit while disconnecting from a personal call while checking me in. I was checked in and quickly called back only to wait forty minutes in a very cold. When Dr. Appel entered the exam room, he noted the cold temperature. He shared the AC may have been left on due to the weirdly high temperatures (75° and up) we had at the end of December. He explained it and quickly left to resolve it. Outside of the waiting time (which seems to be acceptable - because dermatologists are in such high demand), this was a great interaction with Dr. Appel. The one thing I appreciated during the pandemic was timing improvement; medical offices did not double book. They gave more time between patients. People checked in from their cars and went into their appointments. I had to drive 45 minutes for this appointment. I had to take sick leave and leave early for this initial appointment. After waiting, forty-five minutes past my scheduled appointment time. As it would have taken another 45 minutes to get back to work. Almost three hours would have been wasted. I do appreciate Dr. Appel's knowledge and rapport. I just wish patient time also valued.
