Along with asking for an MRI, I wanted to get certain blood work done to check for an autoimmune disorder since I am so young and have already herniated a disc in my back. I presented to Jamie Hamm as much info, evidence, facts as I could provide for her. I let her know I had numbness running down my entire leg, that my leg is colder than the other, and that I was suggested to come see my PCP by my chiropractor. Jamie Hamm did not listen to me whatsoever and proceeded to say that my leg issues is caused by something with my muscle. I was able to get her to schedule an x-ray but was given some b.s. excuse that I should go to physical therapy before getting an MRI. The very next day I was admitted to the emergency room and FINALLY received an MRI and found that I had TWO ruptured discs in my lower back and on Saturday, April 22nd I had emergency surgery to fix my back. I will NEVER see Jamie Hamm again and I will NEVER recommend her services to anyone! I am beyond angry with how I was treated by her! When a 23yo comes to you saying they need help and that they hurt, as a medical professional, you should listen. She is cold hearted and honestly should no longer practice. I would hate to see how she treats someone that isn't able to advocate for themself.

Meaning, no matter what is wrong with you, you've got 15 mins to wrap it up. If she even let's you talk!!! I had been with this clinic for almost 10 years. Have always had amazing care...until Gail. She is rude, arrogant and makes it really clear that SHE is the BOSS. Funny bc she is just an NP not a Dr. She Doesn't care what your issues are and makes stuff up as she goes along. Gets her left and right mixed up ( i know this bc she sent me for 4 xrays and the imaging place had to keep sending me home bc they couldn't reach her in the office (or anyone in the office) to clarify left or right shoulder.I had a torn labrum and frozen shoulder. 1 visit to imaging should have been fine but i had to go back 4 times!!!! Bc she kept putting Left shoulder instead of Right!!! She refused to write antibiotics during an active infection. She forced HRT on me even after I explained that I was not a good candidate bc of my GYN issues and family history. She did not care. She wrote 2 scripts for hormones and zero for antibiotics. Also, she examined an intimate part of my body in a room with a No Door, just a shower curtain. I could see other patients going into rooms and having their lab work done!!! She's awful and I would not recommend her to anyone for anything.

But then I find one right down the street! I'm blessed. Living in a town of around 1,300 people is rough for a girl coming from a city of 2.5 million people (Brooklyn, NY). I'd like to say I'm adjusting well, but everyone knows it's a lie. Not having what I need within walking distance is driving me nuts. Why do I have to drive 15 minutes to McDonald's? Walmart? TACO BELL! At least it's just a three-minute drive to the doctor!... and an hour, 10 minute-walk if I feel like being healthy, but we all know that happened one time and won't ever happen again. The ladies working the front desk are always swarmed with calls. I don't know how they do it. They're always nice despite the amount of stress they have to be under. Thank goodness I'm able to keep my hypochondria in check. NP Alicia Ellis is very professional and caring. I feel like she worries about me more than I worry about myself. On my first visit, I was surprised with a pap smear! She found a cyst on my ovary and referred me to an OBGYN. Luckily, no cyst, but there were some other issues that were discovered. I should get around to thanking her for it. I recently went back for a two-week check-up and my blood pressure was sky high despite being prescribed meds. She gave me a pill, told me to chill for a few minutes, and checked my blood pressure again. Back in normal range for the first time in 5 years. I no longer wake up with headaches or get dizzy standing up. I had to reschedule my appointment for another obligation, but I couldn't get in touch with the front desk. I walked in to see if they did TB tests (they do) and ending up getting checked in anyway! They're also a walk-in clinic. It's lovely. My only issue is they're not open on the weekend, but I can deal with that.

Appointment 1 - we were seen before scheduled appointment time. Appointment 2 - we weren't seen until 45 minutes past scheduled appointment time, with no apology or explanation for the wait. Appointment 3 - we were seen within 10 minutes of appointment time. The entrance to the office is somewhat confusing to find, as there is a group of buildings (all pointing different directions) with not much signage and parking on either side (imagine a half circle with the buildings in the middle and parking on two opposite sides) and the office entrance is actually facing the inside of the compound so it took a few minutes to locate. The actual office entryway/check-in desk is very cramped (barely enough room to walk in with a carseat--forget about someone trying to get in while you're standing there) and the waiting room feels cramped as well, though it's just on the small side (~10 seats). It looks a bit worn and outdated but it felt and looked clean enough. The staff is nice enough--not the best I've experienced but not the worst, either. It's definitely more "homey" feeling than the clinics at the Naval Hospital...and it's not as advanced, either. I was a bit surprised at the scale they used to weigh my newborn...at the Naval Hospital, it was a fancy digital scale that automatically took three separate readings and averaged them. At this office? An old fashioned medical weight scale (where you slide the weights across the bars to get it balanced). Well, that's fine for bigger kids and adults...but a newborn? The nurses and doctor seem to enjoy what they're doing and interacted well with my baby. I never felt rushed, but then we were only there for well-baby checks. Everyone was nice. That said, we're changing offices because they don't do immunizations for Tricare, and my whole reasoning for going to an in-town doctor was to avoid having to drive on-base all the time. Also, they seemed to imply that no town doctors could do immunizations (or maybe I misunderstood, but they certainly assured me THEY couldn't do them) somid have to go on base. Well, whatever the case, I did find a pediatrician's office that does immunizations, so I'm not exactly sure why Martin's doesn't do them. So, if you have babies and Tricare insurance, I'd probably not go here just for the inconvenience factor. But for other insurance or older kids who don't need the frequent vaccines, this place would be fine.

My beautiful mother was failed by the very people and system that were supposed to care for and protect her. I watched her suffer while feeling that our concerns were not being taken seriously and that she was not receiving the care, attention, compassion, or basic human dignity she deserved. I am still pursuing this matter, so there are details I cannot discuss publicly at this time. But I have not forgotten what happened to my mother, and I will not be silent about it. I hope every person responsible for the way she was treated is someday forced to understand exactly what helplessness feels like: to depend upon someone for care and compassion and receive neither. Perhaps then they would understand what they put my mother and our family through. No family should ever have to walk away from a hospital knowing their loved one would still be alive if they had done their job. I intend to pursue every appropriate avenue available to me for answers and accountability. My mother mattered. How she was treated mattered. And I will continue to fight for her.
