This place just wants our money but doesn't really care about the pets. We took our cat for regular routine visits which I had mediocre experiences. I have been going there since about 2016 i have had no problems until 2019. My dog goes for annuals and anal gland expressions every month. She is a lab/pit mix. First let me start with the appointment issues that started happening in the fall of 2019. Literally every appointment that i made month in advance i would receive a call that day of the appointment and how they need to cancel it because either there was no tech or they were clsing early and no one was suppose to make appointment for that time. They could see me in 30 if that would be ok. I dont have the luxury of leaving work whenever i want and i most certainly wouldnt be able to leave and get my dog in that time since we walk there which is already an hours walk. That was getting really annoying and they never offered anything for their inconvenience. but i was polite and just accepted it as my dog enjoys going because all of the treats. 2. recently they changed their prescription services. You can only use them or 1800 petmeds.. SInce i always used Chewy as its been cheaper and hadnt had any issues for the 5 years! i was perplexed why perscription was denied twice. So i finally contacted them and got a VERY RUDE response that i should have seen the newsletter it was mentioned once and they are busy and dont have time for other vendors. Wow ok someone could have let me know whey i told them in my annual weeks prior i get my perscriptions through chewy but ok. 3. and the most heartbreaking reason! during her annual in March 2020 i saw Dr. khampani. My dog also got her anal glands done in the same visit. This vet came back and ssaid my dog is diffiuclt and i need to drug her. Mind you i was only told this ONCE out of 4 years and the tech told me after that she just needs to lay on her side and given peanut butter and she is not a problem. Every tech since then gave her back to me said she did great. So i was highly confused and then she made a stupid comment in regards to me wanting to do it myself then if she is that difficult, in which the Vet tried to explain that is like milking breast, "but you dont have kids so you wouldnt know" We are not friend she doesn know i dont have kids. She apologized after i wrote the office about this comment and said she didnt mean it like that but then she goes on to say how K (dog) is so difficult and its not their fault. She has only seen her once prior to this with no complaints. After being very distraught i go to walk my dog home and she is limping BADLY. I go back in and the vet is annoyed telling me their is nothing she can do but give her some pain meds for two days. Its been a month and my dog cant even walk a mile. Just before this visit she would hike up a summit for 6 miles no problem. We walk 5 miles every day now she cant event do a mile. What makes me more upset is that while i was waiting for the vet to come back out another tech said i "i told them not to lift her up while doing her anal glands, thats what hurt her" I told the vet this and i old the owner. And all they said is well that one note in her file from years ago said she was difficult. They didnt offer to examine her leg not did they xray it. Disregarded that every single tech appointment for years have been going great. Now my dogs quality of life is shorten all because of this place. I would get up every day at 5 and walk her, we both enjoyed that time together and they stole it and wont even fix her. I HATE This place and will never return. Just own up to the fact that the tech did something wrong and try to fix it. I was told by another tech they did it wrong! and yet i get blamed for it. I hope you guys shut down or someone buys you out and fires the Vet Khampani and retrains techs. Because i cant tell you how distraught i am. read more

I brought my puppy here for the first time yesterday and had a great experience. They had outdoor seating with heaters that we could use while we were waiting to be checked-in. The front desk staff was so incredibly nice and so was Dr. Miller. He called to let me know how my pup was doing and was very thorough. He also was happy to answer specific questions I had about her. It took a little while to get an appointment here (we waited about 6 weeks) but it was definitely worth it. read more

Just finished my 2 cats' annual exams with AtlasVet. TOP-NOTCH experience, as usual. Scheduling is easy, virtually zero wait time once we arrived, and the staff genuinely cares about what they do. From the front-desk team, to the vet techs, to the veterinarians themselves, I have always felt like my 2 kitties have received excellent and compassionate care and everyone has had a pleasant attitude. My furry guys' medical situations have always been explained to me fully, and Dr. Morris (high-five!) has always been available to answer follow-up questions. I took my dog Beau back for his annual physical today. It is a challenging time right now to keep everyone safe from COVID. The staff at Atlas are also doing their best and are keeping us, themselves, and our pets safe. It would be advantageous for EVERYONE to remember that! For the man who owns the Weimaraner to be so rude to staff members is beyond my comprehension! Then to continue to explain to the tech how irritated you were by it appears just about everything is ridiculous. They can't stop construction or the streetcar noise. You truly were a jerk! If your dog is that sensitive to noise than perhaps you should move to a quieter environment than the city for your dog's sake. I am very happy with the service from the staff and the vets at Atlas. We are from out of town and needed to get a new health certificate for Bodie to fly back home. We had no issues making an appointment a few days before our date. If you are driving the location might be a hassle because of parking. The neighboring areas around this place is not the greatest but H Street is looking nicer and nicer every time we visit. There's plenty of street parking all along the front, we got lucky and had the spot right in front. Other than that, everything about AtlasVet is awesome. The moment we walked in we were greeted by the staff, the place did not smell like a dog house but they made sure to make it very cozy in the waiting room since it was furnished like a home. Lots of good treats that my picky dog enjoyed :-) I noticed all the staff and pets got along like they were family, the staff was attentive and was very helpful. The moment we walked in our room it felt very comfortable for Bodie and it definitely didn't feel and look like a normal vet office. The technicians and veterinarian was very very nice and friendly. All in all...if I lived in the city. This would be our place to go! read more

I spent $153 dollars only for the vet to tell me nothing was wrong with my dog. Only for me to have to call them back 48 hours later to tell them something was wrong with my dog. For them to then give me a bullshit diet for said dog. Long story short, a week later the exact same thing is still wrong with my dog and there is no solution in sight. You've got to be kidding me. I went to their website to request an appointment to see my cat. They had me enter a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice for the day and time of my appointment. I requested three different days, all requesting an appointment in the early evening after my work hours. A day later I get a notice that my appointment has been scheduled - for 9:00am, three weeks after the dates I requested. Seriously? You're going to let my sick cat suffer for three weeks before you bother to see her, and when you do, you're going to schedule it for the exact opposite of the time of day I requested? No thanks, I'll drive across town to Palisades Vet where they actually care enough about animals to see them in a timely manner and care enough about their customers not to waste their time making them fill out requests that will be flatly ignored. read more

After reading the reviews I was expecting a great experience; however, I found my concerns for my dog being dismissed and then ultimately was given an incorrect diagnosis. I have an older dog and understand that dogs can lose their vision with age; however, my dog was exhibiting a sudden onset of new vision problems. I brought her in to see one of the female vets. I could tell right away she was dismissing my concerns because of the age of my dog; however, I insisted on a more in depth eye exam. For the exam, she took her out of the room, came back and said her eyes are fine for her age and that she doesn't even have cataracts. Right away, I knew she had not even looked in my dog's eyes or had done an extremely poor exam. My dog has been diagnosed with cataracts for years by multiple vets. After this joke of a visit I took my dog to an Ophthalmologist and discovered that my dog has multiple things going on with her eyes, one even requiring medication. I have also seen them turn away a dog with a bad bite injury. I understand that Atlas Vet does not take emergencies, but the dog was brought in with an open wound and they wouldn't even clean it or cover it. It was absurd. Based on these experiences, I will not be going back. read more

If you are so lucky to stumble upon the bar that Dr. Antkowiak frequents after work you might possibly get to meet one of the most compassionate, articulate, and intelligent vets this world over, and one with an incredible sense of humor. After a day of patients and pet parents, all with their own unique concerns and questions, you'll find Dr. Antkowiak surrounded by local restaurant owners and bartenders, each sharing pictures of his or her cat, and asking, "are reverse sneezes normal?" You'd think he'd shout, "enough with the pets!" but he just laughs, and provides council. "Is it like this?" and he begins to reenact the reverse sneeze, "or this?" as he makes a gagging sound. It is the veterinarian equivalent of Car Talk. "Okay, it's reverse sneezing" he eventually confirms. "Normal. You should dust more," he tells the owner of the reverse sneezing cat. Kahlil Gibran says, "work is love made visible" and it appears Dr. Antkowiak is living that creed up and down H St. These bar-side conversations shed light on the owner of Atlas Vet: a man who has a heart for animals and also for their people, inside and outside of the office. read more

This place is garbage. Vets and front desk people are incredibly rude. The whole practice is disorganized and very unprofessional. Vet I was assigned was rude and inexperienced. They get very annoyed if you ask any questions about your pet because they are running an assembly line, packing as many appointments onto their schedule as possible, with very little regard for the well being of the pets they are treating. read more

I cannot say enough good things about AtlasVet. When we moved to DC, one of my immediate priorities was finding first-rate care for our dogs. After some pretty thorough internet research, I decided on Atlas and haven't looked back. I'm a little (a lot) neurotic about our senior dog, as she is super skittish and doesn't do well at all around unfamiliar faces. While she still doesn't love trips to the doctor, Atlas makes it as positive of an experience as possible and there is nothing more reassuring than knowing she is always in the best hands. Their front desk staff is always friendly and super responsive, and I've never had an issue getting an appointment. Our appointments always start on time and I've not once felt rushed or like my questions and concerns weren't completely addressed. I also love that they always follow up with a phone call the following day, even just after routine visits. As far as the recent comment regarding scheduling difficulty - they are busy and sometimes booked in advance because they are a top notch clinic... We've seen Dr. Cartlidge, Dr. Miller (War Eagle!) and Dr. Kampani and have had equally superb experiences with all three. Also worth noting is that Jackson is the only technician that our senior girl has warmed up to in her ten years of going to the vet. I could go on but it would be more of the same. I'm a cat person so I'm biased, but AtlasVet appears to be dog centric; not terribly accommodating for cats, particularly for dental procedures. The staff appeared to be indifferent to my cat's dental pain and was unwilling to provide timely access to appropriate care. read more

STAY AWAY!!! Kurt, the tech at AtlasVet vet, took medical instructions from the *front desk person* - without checking with me, the owner - and overdosed my sick cat on her meds. When I was upset and wanted to talk to the doctor, they hung up on me, saying I used profanity, which I would never do!! And they said I could not speak to the doctor. It's one thing to make a mistake, but then to double-down and make false accusations of me so you don't have to deal with it?? The next day, I got the medical records back. Kurt flat out falsified the records, saying I am the one who said my cat needed the meds. Why would I say that when I just gave her the meds an hour earlier?? Tracie knows what happened bc I discussed this with her and this is why I was upset in the first place. Why would I get upset if they administer meds I requested them to make? In reality, while on the phone during the incident, Kurt admitted to me that I didn't tell him about the meds but the person at the front desk did. And that he should have checked with me but instead he said he asked the front desk person three times if the med instructions were right. He said he was wrong for not asking me. When I mentioned that to Tracie, she said that' Kurt's decision to take the instructions from the front desk was the proper process. Of course, in the formal record they said I gave the instructions for the meds. Kurt also made comments in my cats file that I was distraught over a parking spot??? Huh??? I found a spot as soon as I got there. And even if I didn't, I don't get distraught over parking spots. No one does who lives and drives in the city. The entire record was shocking - conversations and statements were mentioned that never occurred - and clearly meant to deflect from what happened. Any instructions I gave on my cat - such as please don't administer her fluids too quickly bc she cries - were written in a way that tried to indicate I'm difficult. Really messed up that proving instructions on how to handle my cat makes me difficult. Of course, Tracie's account was that I didn't yell and accepted the instructions explanation for the meds. So which is it- am I the raving lunatic or the perturbed cat owner?? I could go on but I won't. I would *never* trust Atlas with my pet. If they make a mistake - such as let the person at the front desk dictate medical advice to the vet tech - be prepared for them to do whenever they think is necessary to cover up for themselves. No one from mgmt had the decency to call me, as promised, or even check in with my cat. I called the emergency hospital last night when she wasn't feeling well and they gave me instructions. read more

I highly recommend Atlas Vet! We've taken our puppy there for routine wellness visits and one sick visit so far. Every time he has been greeted by a nurse who loves all over him (they love your animals like their own) and then the vet calls and gives a thorough explanation of different vaccines they recommend, possible diagnoses for the presenting issue, and always ask you if there is anything else you'd like to discuss. The vet forewarned us today that booking is out several months for neutering, so I appreciate their proactive and thorough care for our dog. The staff is also great - very responsive to emails and was willing to get vet records from an out of state vet who saw our dog while we were traveling. Having said vet hospital for comparison, Atlas and Dr. McCurdy is head and shoulders above others! read more

I can't say enough good things about AtlasVet. We brought our Greater Swiss Mountain Dog to them based on a recommendation and braved the traffic from NW DC to H Street for five years because we enjoyed their team so much. I appreciated multiple things: the ability to get an appointment in a timely manner, the kindness and competence of the clinical providers, the clean and attractive office, and the excellent follow-up provided by the vets. Each time that we brought our dog in with a problem, we received a call within the next day or two asking how their suggested interventions had worked. You cannot select the veterinarian your pet sees (just the appointment time), but I ended up loving each vet that we saw. Most of all, I respected the clinical judgment of all the vets with whom we interacted. As a (human) clinician myself, I felt that all of my dog's minor to moderate health issues were managed sensibly, and that there were no attempts to pad our bill with unnecessary or overpriced scans, tests, procedures, meds, etc. (seems like this is an issue with a number of DC vets). We have just left DC, and I am dreading having to find a new vet, because I doubt we will be able to find another that we love this much! read more

Atlas to the rescue! Can't say enough good things about Atlas Vet and Dr. McCurdy. I was not an existing patient, and yet they went out of their way to not simply squeeze me in on short notice, but made me feel like I'd been coming there for years. My elderly pug Ty hurt himself and was in significant pain needing an urgent vet visit. Since everyone is adopting pets during COVID, my normal neighborhood solo-practitioner vet was already full. I called Atlas late afternoon, and Zain at the front desk was candid and sympathetic and kindly found a way to get us in first thing the next day! Wasn't sure how a new vet would work during COVID, but they made the distanced process quite easy. Dr. McCurdy called me within 10 minutes of taking Ty to the back with a calm, knowledgable, and helpful diagnosis and treatment plan. She was straightforward and compassionate, and made me feel that despite just meeting him today she truly cared about Ty. He's now home sleeping comfortably and feeling better. I started bringing my pets here in 2013 or so. At the time, I had 3 dogs and 2 cats so I've spent a considerable amount of money here. They don't seem to care anymore. It seems like they've grown too large, too fast. There's no accountability. I tried voicing my concerns to Dr. Miller but he didn't seem to care either. I have been taking my dog here for about 4 years and the service here has been awful in the last year. They don't seem to care about the animals anymore and they are just trying to get animals out the door, without fully assessing the issues or answering question. I'm not sure if they are just overwhelmed due to Covid but they will take your pet from you and return them after doing hundreds of dollars of tests and send you away with a large bill for services not approved, and still no solutions. Good Afternoon!!! My name is Carly and I am an 8 year old puppy. I have had some skin issues and have been very itchy the last few weeks. My humans have tried everything from changing my diet, to different shampoos and lotions, to OTC meds, etc... I really want to be comfortable because I love to take naps and chase squirrels. What started out as my daily walk around the neighborhood turned into a great vet experience. We walked into the office without an appointment, but the nice people that worked there were able to see me that afternoon. Though I do not fully understand the concept of time, I think we only waited about 30 minutes. After Matt took a look at me (he gave me treats), I met Dr. McCurdy. Dr. McCurdy is a very nice doctor who really loves animals. I wasn't the best patient, so I was given more treats while she sat on the floor with me until I was comfortable enough to have my ears checked as well as my belly rubbed. After I was petted and fed, Dr. McCurdy took her time to explain my itchy skin and what we can do to alleviate my condition. I am please to say that I am getting better. I have had a great nap and chased a few squirrels while I was out today. Even my human was happy as he still had beer money after our visit. I have been looking forward to Atlas Vet's opening-- finally, a vet near my home and PLUS PLENTY OF STREET PARKING! Which is something that Union Vet lacks. I took one of my cats to his check-up appointment so we met Dr Miller. Oh, did I tell you I am Deaf? But it didn't bother him-- it turns out Dr Miller did learn some signs and fingerspelling so we were able to communicate through typing on the notepad on iPhone, gestures, and some signs with spelling (with me teaching him new signs so he doesn't have to spell every word all the times). So a major brownie point for Atlas Vet for not freaking out about the fact that I am Deaf. And Double-Major-Brownie points for learning American Sign Language. but, here is what the best part for me: they EMAILED me the results! Now, I am not crazy about phone, because I am never home and I am too tired to check my answering machine when I get home... and too many hearies get confused about calling a Deaf person so I have a hate-hate relationship with phones in general (you can call a Deaf person, you know? we have videophones.) but YAY for e-mails! AND They do tweet. :-) So email plus DM-- ahh the best kinds of communication! But to sum it up: my car purred at Atlas Vet. There you go. He approves Atlas Vet. I am writing this review of Atlas Vet based on the excellent customer service and quality care my cat Otis received as a patient of Atlas over the last two months of his life. I wish I had found Atlas months earlier. Sadly, Otis was gravely ill and not able to make it through his ordeal, but Atlas Vet was instrumental in saving his life when I first brought him in, continuing to treat him (and doing a better job than the emergency vet facility who first handled his case), and then working to keep him comfortable through multiple exams, blood work and feeding tube issues. It says something when a very ill cat actually enjoys visting their vet, to the point of preferring to chill out in their waiting room surrounded by other patients (ie, dogs) rather than wait in the car while Mom pays the bill. I cannot stress enough how impressed I was with Dr. A throughout this experience - from the get go he was honest with me about my cat's diagnosis, chances of recovery, and walking me through all of the angles so I could make an informed decision. He did this with a great deal of compassion, which I think is noteworthy. He also did not suggest tests and other things that would not directly result in improving Otis' quality of life or health. He stuck to the goal of working to help heal Otis, and he was honest when he believed nothing more could be done. He also had a great deal of prior experience with hepatic lipodosis in cats, more so than a generalist might, and that certainly helped with the treatment my cat received. Some other items: The staff were always friendly and helpful, giving me syringes for free, walking me patiently through the steps of using a feeding tube, etc. Jake the vet tech in particular I found to be very good. He is calm without being demeaning and animals seem to respond to him well. Also the way Atlas handled the euthanasia process was very sensitive and thoughtfully executed. I can't remember everyone's names right now, but I truly felt all of them knew my cat, cared about his well being, and were sensitive to the situation. The facility is great, and very calming to cats (I am not a dog person, but every dog I saw in the waiting room area was very mellow). The exam tables are bolted/folded in the wall, are not that cold stainless steel cats hate, and are rarely used. Each time my cat Otis was in there he sat on Dr. A's lap on the floor or on him on an easy chair. I think it really helps everyone stay a bit more mellow (pet parents included). They also have white noise piped in, which is nice and very calming. Responsiveness by staff to requests from other vets for paperwork, labs, etc. very prompt. Referrals to pet sitters, etc. also cheerfully provided. Location is good (though parking can be a challenge on H Street). Fantastic if you live in Capitol Hill. I live in Columbia Heights, but still made the drive. Prices very reasonable - the staff often threw in free feeding tube syringes, feeding tube caps, etc at no charge, which was very sweet. My only worry I can see is that Atlas becomes so popular they get strained in terms of resources/staff and lose the customer service focus they currently have compared to their competitors. When I get another pet, I will take them to Atlas - Dr. A will be my vet for life. read more

Dear Atlas, Thank you for helping me say good bye to my 20 year old cat, Oliver. I adopted him from the SPCA on Valentines Day in 1995. In 1999, I was so busy with grad school that I took him to my dad's house (a certifiable "cat person."). Oliver, who has always been an indoor/outdoor cat, jumped the backyard fence. In 2008, I got a phone call from an older couple who found Oliver. They worm, vaccinate, spay/neuter, and feed a feral colony near their house. They found Oliver among the colony and saw that he was more of a lover than a fighter -- though always a willing fighter. Oliver's microchip was so old that it went undetected until Oliver was injured in a fight. The vet saw his chip in the X-Ray. It took another 2 weeks to find a reader old enough to decipher the chip. He's been with me since, even making the cross-country flight when I moved to DC from CA. I knew for months that Oliver's health was deteriorating. We'd spent the weekend eating tuna and gazing into each other's eyes. So when I finally took him to Atlas, I knew it was probably for the end. On the way to Atlas, there was a crazy drenching rain storm that almost matched my flow of tears. First, Atlas worked Oliver in for the nominal fee of $25. Second, everyone was amazingly nice. Their kindness and gentleness -toward Oliver and toward me- made me cry more. I loved that the exam room they put us in was a comfy chair and a carpet. Oliver could meander. I could cuddle him in the chair. Each person looked through the window in the door to be sure they didn't open in on Oliver. They opened the door slowly and addressed Oliver with compassion and cat-know-how. He was stressed but sweet to everyone. Atlas, you can't know how UNLIKE Oliver that is. He's usually so cool and incredibly picky about the humans he consorts with. I will spare everyone the details... But Dr. De la Cruz explained all my options and was gracious about my choice for Oliver. No one hurried me, nor was I left alone for too long. Everyone was so kind to Oliver and to me. Oliver was curled up into a little ball. He looked peaceful. Atlas gave me a clay print of his paw. I would've paid $100 for that paw print, but they offered it for free. If this is how they treat a very old cat on his last day, I can only imagine how much love, knowledge, and sensitivity they will lavish on your loved one. Oliver was buried with love and flowers, and a Sacajawea dollar for the ferryman. His belongings went to cat rescue and foster, so everything will go to kitties that need. Thank you Atlas. I moved into DC proper from the surrounding suburbs about a year ago. I was excited to have my Sheltie, Katie, visit a talented DC vet. AtlasVet had outstanding reviews. It seemed like a no brainer. I am not sure what the conditions were surrounding my visit that made it so different than the rest but it was enough to guarantee I will sacrifice the hour drive to see my old vet going forward. Katie came in for routine care along with an ear infection and blood in her vaginal area. She is a spayed dog so the blood was a major concern. My husband was present during their examination and was told the blood was actually dirt caused by "hygiene issues." I was at work at the time but was shocked to learn they had not shaved the area to investigate. I requested that they do so and, surely enough, they agreed it was blood afterward. We were not told the cause and were not given any follow up. When Katie came back to her examination room, she was unusually skittish and appeared extremely uncomfortable. My husband was told this was due to "irritations" from the shave and stress. What they omitted was the 2cm long, fresh cut on her labia they inflicted during the process. I understand accidents and I do not concern myself with blame. What I do concern myself with is honesty. What I do concern myself with is the health and safety of my dog. We spent five long days helping Katie recover from what they did. She spent those five days crying, refusing to eat, and refusing to walk. Other owners invariably approached us to find out what was wrong because of how visibly unusual her behavior was. I do not know what was going on behind the scenes at AtlasVet but I would never take the risk of bringing Katie back. I have sent them this same feedback directly in hopes that they will avoid incidents like this with future clients. Sure, they began the appointment promptly. The waiting area was nice. Is all of this a replacement for the care you are coming for in the first place? Or the trust you place in them with the care of your furry family member? For any owners who are okay with making that trade off, I urge you to be keenly vigilant. I cannot recommend their services in good conscience but I hope others are luckier. Update (09Mar2016): It is regretful that the owner, Matthew, took it upon himself to respond in defense rather than address the problem at issue or offer to reconcile. Worst still, he offered empty gratitude for the review rather than answer genuinely. My concern was that the cut, sizable enough to be seen and inflict significant pain, was not mentioned by AtlasVet staff. Matthew's response suggests a strikingly thorough examination and yet the cut was omitted. The notes indicated in his response appear even more inconsistent as they spoke to my husband when they called the next day and not to me. I confirmed with my husband that he did not report that she was lethargic and I can confirm she was, on the contrary, restless. I too would be restless if my labia had been cut. I am appalled that the owner expects pet parents to not only guide his staff to perform their duties in the first place, but personally inspect the work for wounds and then faithfully return to the same establishment that was negligent to begin with. I spent four years with my previous veterinary hospital, A.P.A.W. They have seen Katie and my four cats, one of which they expertly cared for through her passing due to congenital illness. My review mentioned I would return to them but Matthew's response was so far removed from good faith that he erroneously closed by wishing me well on my "new" one. It would have demonstrated more class and professionalism to apologize and move on. The owner instead chose to antagonize an already wronged patient and failed there as well. I hope this is not the example he sets for his staff and is merely responding capriciously out of personal offense. I previously had been very happy with Atlas Vets. They had treated my cat's bladder infection and helped me with a rescue cat. The doctors are great. However, I had a recent experience for which the result is that I will not be returning. My cat had a reoccurrence of the bladder infection. I called Altlas Vet to make an appointment or check if I could just get a refill on her previous prescription. I do not have a car, and my budget is very tight, so taking her to the vets can be an expensive process. They would not do a refill, which while disappointed, I did understand. She had not been treated for an infection for almost a year, so it made sense they would want to see her. The woman on the phone agreed that she was an urgent care case and needed to see a doctor as soon as possible. Except the first available open appointment was not for another six days. I was told I should absolutely bring her in sooner than six days, and that they would fit her in as a "drop-by" but I would have to pay an additional fee to do so. I understand the fee if I am coming by, unannounced, with a non-emergency. But if they have deemed her an emergency and tell me to bring her in, then why charge me more for following their recommendation? And why levy a fee on someone for having an emergency? Would they charge an extra fee if she had been hit by a car and needed urgent attention too? I found the conversation to be frustrating and unhelpful. The receptionist would not consult with a vet to get a more expert opinion on whether my cat really did need to come in sooner than the six days and she would not inquire about waiving the fee for an emergency if she medically did need to be seen. WOW. I just read a 1-star review for this vet that was given because of the emergency fee, and having been in the same boat yesterday, I feel that I want to respond with an opinion of my own. My cat Monty had been struggling with a really nasty cold for about 3 days -- runny nose, constant sneezing, and clear discharge from his eye. He was absolutely miserable and there seemed to be no end in sight to this terrible cold he was suffering. I called Atlas (Monty has been a patient there previously) and explained the situation. I was told that there were no appointments available, but that he could be squeezed in as a walk-in first thing the next morning and that an urgent care fee would apply. The urgent care fee is only about $20/$25 more than the regular fee. If your animal is that bad off, I don't understand why you'd feel that this is unreasonable given that the schedule is already full for the day and they are doing you a favor. Anyway, Monty loves Dr. Cartlidge and is always at ease with her. She thoroughly examined him and we concluded that he didn't have a bacterial infection, so she prescribed some medication to alleviate his symptoms. He is on day 2 of his medication with no signs of symptoms, he's breathing easily, not sneezing, and the eye discharge has stopped. He's finally getting some rest -- poor thing. We currently live on H Street, but will be moving to Alexandria soon. Even so, I will continue to use this vet. We absolutely love them and they have taken excellent care of my little man. read more

I just moved to DC with with my fur partner, Bobcat, who has had stage 4 kidney failure for a year and a half now. I've only been to Atlas once, and that's how good it was. I called Atlas as Bobcat, who had been stable on her meds, took a bad turn. Based on my last experience, I believed that I wouldn't be able to get an appointment as a new client for Bobcat soon enough to make a difference. Maybe I shouldn't be so biased against just showing up at an emergency clinic, but with Bobcat at the end of her life, that's not what I wanted. I wanted a nice vet I knew, and thought there was no way I could get it. Atlas' clerk apologized that the soonest they'd be able to get me in was the next day at 1pm. Don't apologize, front desk person. That is amazing. You are amazing. Gold star. When we showed up to the appointment, I had prepped myself emotionally for not returning with Bob by sobbing and babbling incoherencies to my husband the night before. It was a sad day, and tough to show up alone with your dying cat at a new place. My only beef was that the cute waiting room overflew with delightful, rambunctious puppies, a thing that even I frankly can't believe I'm complaining about, but Bob is afraid of dogs. It would be nice if there was a chill room or designated space for sick cats. I've only been to one vet with a separate dog/cat entrance, and it was genius. But beyond that, it was rad. I was surprised that the patient rooms were carpeted and furnished with non-clinical chairs that had the bearing of an object that you might actually like to own. You know how most medical facilities try to look humane by like, putting a Target-art piece of art up in their anonymous, sterile, pastel-colored facility and hoping that maybe if you stare into it you'll feel like a human designed the room? I almost thought I was in the wrong place. Is this a pleasant old auntie's sitting room? Are there going to be crumpets? There wasn't even an examining table that I could see. Then the techs and vets sat in the floor with Bobcat. I was suddenly baffled to realize that every other vet I had been to, while perfectly professional and competent, sucked by comparison. And it's not their fault, sucking was totally normal. I lost track of time while I tried to figure out why going to the vet, or the doctor, for that matter, is so freaking unpleasant if Atlas Vet had figured out that it just took a rug, then sitting on the rug with you. We all sat on the floor and discussed my terminal cat's options. Dr. Hodgdon, whose name I have never said correctly, bless her, must have seen the blind panic of being responsible for a small life in my eyes. Without overtly doing it, she talked me off the ledge of putting Bobcat down then and there. The truth is, as bad as Bob was that weekend - it was classic, overnight, kidney-failure-turning-for-the-worst behavior, she had leveled out. She had gotten up off the deathbed for one more stroll. Hodgdon did discuss Bob's end of life options with me and did the bloodwork, apologizing that she would not be there the next day to call. I THINK that the vet who did call me with the results was Dr. McCurdy. She patiently stayed on the phone with me for some time explaining the results. She emailed me some end-of-life care options as well and really talked it out. Any of you who have had terminal or chronically ill pets - or children, or parents, heck - know that there's a lot of NUMBERS, scales, acronyms, and tests associated with their condition. Through research, I've gotten ok at understanding what Bob's critical numbers are, but it's always tough to ingest those numbers and acronyms over the phone. I had kind of come to accept that my understanding of Bob's condition would always be kind of an artistic gestalt, and I guess ultimately it is and that's probably for the best, but blow me away when I got an email today with Bob's records and notes comprehensively online. Again, my head spun as I realized that every vet in the world was just bumbling around in a padded room compared to Atlas by not having records online. I don't know if that will impress you all as much, but I came first from a vet that wrote everything incomprehensibly by hand and you had to request to get copies, then, after that, a vet who was simply inaccessible most of the time by phone except, I'm assuming, by wizardry, or actually being the president. It usually took three calls and several days to talk to a human about anything there. I was able to look at Bob's charts, which had some importance to me as a layperson, and the doctor's notes, which were invaluable to review. Invaluable because I realized that to them, though Bob was "terminal," she was not staggering around begging to go. Their notes made me realize she had a little more good time. I was sold on AtlasVet five minutes into my first visit, when - upon entering an exam room (that looked nothing like an exam room, all cozy furniture and funky carpets, no sterile metal tables) - the attending tech immediately sat down on the floor and proceeded to play with the dog. Though she's been jabbed with needles and poked and prodded there many times since, she still wags her tail whenever we enter the place. The reviews are right, this place is all its cracked up to be, the doctors and staff are all really knowledgeable and clearly care about your animals. We came here after another vet that was closer to us didn't impress when we were looking to have some growths removed from our dog. The other vet wanted to send us to a specialist while the vet here explained all the pros and cons, the costs, and if it was going to be worth it. They did the surgery, charged us less than two other places we were quoted by, and were able to get us in quickly. Throughout the process the doctor called and updated us and called during the surgery when he found some additional growths and let us know our options. All that being said, they're super proactive and really thorough. If you need anything done and you don't live too far away, this is the spot. And, as a disclaimer, my wife works in the veterinary business, and calls on vets all day, and I used to sell to them as well, these guys are a great practice. read more

I had a really favorable experience here. I saw Dr. Cartlidge and she was awesome. She really took time to answer my questions and address any concerns I had, and jumped right in with advice of her own about my two kittens, drawing on her own experiences both as a vet and a cat owner. She also understood why my cats are called Bingley and Darcy, which earned her huge bonus points from me. The space is airy and very clean. I liked the decor and the comfortable atmosphere. Unlike some others have commented, everything that was done was done in front of me, including vaccines. The staff and Dr. Cartlidge were gentle and patient with my kitties and did indeed get down on the floor with them.
