I have a 9 month old a puppy I recently re-homed from my sister who was a member and frequented the McClean location. Even though that annual membership was purchased on March 7, 2026, the 14th St. location told me that I had to buy a whole new membership because it was non-transferable. The actual patient hasn't changed just the owner, so I'm not sure why I would have to pay for another annual membership when this was just paid for three months ago. I also called the McLean location today and asked if I could bring my puppy in for his monthly flea and tick pill. They told me that they would have it ready for pick up whenever I wanted to come, but I asked if it was possible to pick up from the 14th St. location because it's down the street from my house (about a 30 minute walk). They said yes, so I contacted the 14th St location to make sure they had the medicine in stock and could refill the prescription, and also that they had availability for me to stop by today. She said the medicine was in stock and I could stop by anytime today, so I rearranged my schedule, told my husband to take the car today and walked over with my dog. When I got there, the woman working the front desk told me that I needed some sort of xyz for him to be seen at that location. I had to tell her I had no clue what acronym she kept using and then she proceeded to tell me that because my dog has medical records in Virginia I needed to reestablish new Care for him in DC. I explained that I had called both locations prior to walking 30 minutes to get there, and she just said it was her that I spoke with, so I asked her why she didn't alert me if that prior to telling me to bring him in. She said "Sorry for the inconvenience" but didn't really have an explanation she then proceeded to tell me that I needed to pay in full for a visit/exam with the doctor before they could give me his prescription. Despite the fact it was hugely inconvenient and was going to cost me over $109 just to get his basic prescription that I had already been established and in the system with the same company, just at a different location, I didn't want the trip to be wasted so I asked if he could be seen today. She then told me they were fully booked today, but then told me they had other locations I could check availability with. I asked her "Well, wouldn't I have to pay to establish care with them as well? And wouldn't it be more convenient for me to just take him to McLean to avoid all of these fees and just pick up his prescription?" She was like "Oh ya, that's probably better". In addition to being hugely inconvenient, there was no offer to really rectify the situation. This whole ordeal seems like a hustle when 1. they won't transfer the membership ownership with the dog, AND 2. for every different location I take my dog to in the DMV area I would have to PAY out of pocket to establish new care in that state. Not sure what the point of choosing a company that has multiple locations for convenience if none of the offices share records or can help you when you take your dog to their locations?? Anyway, we walked back home another 30 minutes, and I called the McLean location, only to find out they had never heard of such a policy. This whole experience has been extremely frustrating, so I'll likely find another vet. Worth saying the McClean location was very apologetic and empathetic. The 14th St location acted like everything was out of her hands. And who knows if that's even an actual policy..? read more

I always have great experiences with this practice! Both the 14th St and Bethesda locations have excellent staff who take very good care of my cat. She gets very scared at the vet and I appreciate the extra time they put in to try and make her comfortable. She also has FIV and knowing I can use the Telehealth option or get a same-day appointment is such a huge relief. read more

I've been going here for about a year. It's a really boujee vet that's not cheap but I like this place because it's friendly, clean and simplistic in a way that it doesn't trigger my Shih-Tzu's anxiety like other vets or commercial establishments. Quick appointments have been fairly easy to get since they are not a volume based business model and that's been great, especially the 24 hr telehealth app for simpler concerns. There's endless treats for him at the front desk and I genuinely think he enjoys the place. The staff has been really nice to us and even let me coddle him while they gave him his vaccines. Overall, it's worth the expense if you have the extra cash. read more

Yes, Small Door did fully refund the membership fees. Refund has posted to my credit card. However, I am not convinced that this would have been settled without the help of the Yelp review. Given I reached the day fees were posted to my credit card resolution should have gone this far. My other concern is that this was handled via text messaging. When customers have issues/concerns it behooves companies to pick up the phone and have a conversation. Text messaging for something like was impersonal. Again, the vet care shown to my pet was outstanding. The vets truly cared about his wellbeing and maintaining his health. By no means was this review a reflection of the vets at Small Door but business operations. read more

AVOID. They will upcharge and overcharge you for everything, and be sure to read the fine print on everything. We were "late" in returning a sample for testing and they charged us another $150 fee on top of the wellness exam fee which was over $900. When we told them we weren't told about the late fee-we were advised to read the small print. Just another heartless corporation! read more

I have two rescue stray Chihuahuas that are very nervous going to the vet. The whole team at Small Door has been super caring and patient with my two boys to help them feel more comfortable - relieving some of my stress too! Dr. Dugan has been wonderful. He has a very practical approach, especially for senior dogs, that's patient comfort first and he truly loves helping animals. read more

Had my first visit here with my cat Weasley today. Dr. Randolph was great--super sweet with my cat, and very calm and communicative with me. He addressed all of my concerns and was very patient and thorough. He even got down on the floor to try and connect with my cat. They did an enema and recommended a transfer to a local emergency hospital for overnight monitoring. They handled calling the vet, transferring the paperwork, and are even submitting the claim to my insurance on my behalf. A great experience overall! read more

I've been a Small Door member since July 2023. For a while, I genuinely loved them. They were the first vet clinic that took time to help my cat feel safe and calm during appointments. The staff was gentle, thoughtful, and communicative. When I had to leave him for a dental procedure, I felt confident knowing he was in good hands. My original 5-star review is below. But when my cat became critically ill earlier this year, everything changed. I brought him in for a limp and a six-month senior check-in, and specifically noted that his belly had become slightly distended. The doctor said it was likely food-related and moved on. When I pushed back, I was dismissed. Later that evening, I got a call saying the X-rays suggested there might be fluid in his abdomen, but the vet thought it was just the X-ray angle. Again, I said no, I had flagged this already and I was confident we would find fluid in his abdomen. An ultrasound later revealed a tumor. He was diagnosed at Friendship Animal Hospital with two rare cancers and two weeks later ended up needing an emergency surgery. From there, communication only worsened. There were delays, conflicting instructions, and missed follow-ups. I wasn't told my primary vet had left for vacation and handed off Bear's case. I spent days trying to get test results explained, records sent, and someone to help me make decisions. My doctor's notes had different directions for his prescriptions than the pill bottles and I couldn't get any consistency on dosing. I finally paid out of pocket to consult with a vet in Virginia, just to get clear answers. I genuinely believe my cat might not be alive if I hadn't taken those steps. To their credit, the medical manager called to talk through what went wrong when I told them this. She admitted that multiple balls were dropped, that the communication breakdowns were unacceptable, and that my cat's care should have been handled differently. She apologized and offered a refund for an unnecessary ultrasound that ultimately delayed his care. I do truly truly appreciated that conversation but by then, my trust was gone. I've also realized many of the membership benefits were never delivered. In two years, I never received flea or tick prevention, nail trims, or more than one six-month dose of heartworm medication. Many of the individual staff are kind, and I do believe they care. But in my experience, Small Door is not equipped for complex or urgent cases. Their system works when things are routine. But when things escalate, there's no clear continuity of care, and it's too easy to fall through the cracks. I was ignored when I raised concerns that turned out to be life-threatening. I had to fight for answers -- and I shouldn't have had to. This isn't a review I wanted to write. But if you have a senior cat or need more than basic preventative care, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. OLD REVIEW: I have tried four vets over the last couple of years. Each have been ok but until Small Door, none have been fantastic. My cat, like many, hates the vet and SD was the first group of people whose main focus was calming him down. They spend the first few minutes of every appointment making him feel comfortable and safe. He is a very loud and dramatic boy but he would never hurt anyone and I understand not all cats are like that so many vets are a little nervous and just do their work while he's meowing in terror. SD gives him treats and works with him as he calms down. He's so chill in their offices, I feel like he is in such good hands with them. I've only left him to do teeth cleaning once but I was so comfortable knowing he was there and they sent me updates and photos throughout the day. The vets and vet techs are so amazing. Milton loves to go to and see everyone. They make him feel so welcome that even if we're there for vaccines, he wants to stay longer and hang out. His tail is wagging the whole time and he pulls to go back before our turn to say hi. Everyone is great but Dr. Cherness is the best and is so thorough (and so patient as I usually have 20 questions). Milton just loves her. read more

Read all the reviews and avoid this place at all costs. Their customer service is awful, and they refuse to help when there's an issue. I signed up for a membership on a Sunday, had a terrible experience on Monday, and tried to cancel on Tuesday--only to be denied a refund. I took my dog in for an injured leg, and they ran $488 worth of unnecessary blood tests just to prescribe medication. They never provided test results and didn't even complete the tests. Their solution? Wait two weeks for an x-ray (which they claimed required sedation--something multiple vets confirmed was false and even dangerous). When I reached out for a refund, they refused, claiming that since I had one visit, I wasn't eligible--even though they failed to deliver any actual results. In total, I paid $637 for a single appointment, incomplete tests, and two pain meds. Save your money and go somewhere reputable. read more

My first year with Small Door went relatively stress free; but now I assume that they have decided that business is enough and they no longer need to treat their current customers with kindness or respect. Their app has very good and responsive tele health for minor and quick health related matters, which I appreciated. But lately, that's where the positives end. 1. I chose this vet because they did the internal health certificates and I am always traveling internationally. I also made sure to tell them well in advance when my last trip was going to be, but for those they won't let you schedule in the app nor in person, you need to send an email. I sent the email and they sent back a very long email back that was very poorly written and particularly confusing for non native speakers. When I replied (according to my understanding), they said it was too late and they wouldn't do it. I managed to get Clarendon in Arlington to do the international health certificate that Small Door refused to do with enough time. 2. They gave me a container to take a urine sample of my dog for a lab, the paper said the urine sample had to be taken within x days of blood test. I collected the urine and took to the vet on one day and had an appointment to draw my dog's blood the next day. I get a call an hour later saying that they could only accept the urine AFTER the blood test (which first of all, wasn't written in the instructions I was given, and second of all, why would they give me the urine collection kit ahead of time anyway). Complete waste of time. 3. Different employees gave me different grace period policies for appointments, but today I was turned down due to 7 minutes. Even if we forget the fact that we live in a city with traffic and hell to find parking, the absolute worst was how they treated me. They turned me down over the phone, I came to the clinic anyway to try to talk, and while I was talking to one person at the reception (the same one who talked to me on the phone and told me to go home with my sick dog), the other individual at the reception desk stood up, went to get some water for his colleague, without ever acknowledging my presence. That's when I said: "oh, yes, we need to make sure he is calm." This showed me that I was being treated as an intruder, I wasn't welcome, and I am sorry, I am a paying customer and should have been treated with a lot more respect than it was shown me when I am trying to get care for my sick dog. I left the clinic where I very clearly wasn't welcome in and called SD. While I was talking to HQ outside on the street about the absolute outrageous situation, the two men at the front desk plus a nurse kept giving me looks and checking out the window. At no point did any of them thought about doing something more mature or polite, like either stop spying on me or to literally come to try to clear the air. The icing on top was getting an automated email saying "I hope you and your dog are ok. You didn't show so we will charge you 99$." when I was there and they refused to see me or treat my dog. I honestly have had it. They are far from being cheap and you'll be treated like a piece of product on a conveyor belt: if things aren't exactly the way their terrible communication tells you to be, then you are tossed out. Even if HQ tells you how sorry they are about the situation, nothing gets resolved. Already looking for a new vet, and I truly hope you can see past the sponsored adds and nice marketing. They don't care about you or your pets, just their bottom line. read more

I was 8 minutes late to my appointment, and they wouldn't honor the appointment due to a strict "5 minute grace period". Note, this "policy" is not written in their T&C or in their appointment reminder. They also charged me $50 to reschedule, despite the fact that they then cancelled the appointment at my request. I tried to call ahead to let them know that I was running a few minutes behind due to traffic and finding parking outside their downtown location. However, the number only takes you to a robotic menu list rather than the front desk. There was only one other patron in the waiting room. Life happens and this is a pretty unreasonable, anti customer policy -- particularly given that I have to put my cat through the stress of anti anxiety medicine, car trips, and a vet visit. read more

I wish I could join the two other reviewers but I suspect that this small "boutique" practice has grown too big for its britches. From the moment I had contact with an administrative assistant to the time I was leaving when I was confronted, aggressively by their "office manager" Ashley-the attitudes and lack of customer forward service was deplorable. I understand they are very busy right now, due in part to foolish people like me that referred numerous clients to this vet service without trying it in DC-relying on the NYC reviews, but if what I encountered is any indication of how they working now they won't be busy in a year from now. I received a placeholder from Small Doors for an appointment reading 8:00am-8:30am. They contend that means I have to be there at 8-and not a minute later. Then why sent me an invite with a 30 minute window? I arrived at 8:10, I thought it was 8:05-I needed to be out as early as possible thus the request for 8. The two admins were busy with the two customers that were waiting at the door before they opened. When I seen 8-10 minutes later, the admin told me I was late and they didn't know if they could see me, yet they were understaffed and didn't get to me after they saw the two waiting at the door, so I was waiting. RIDICULOUS. I was then treated as a truant and they would see if they could STILL make time for me!!?? Are they kidding. It didn't stop there, apparently the vets get 30 minutes to see a client and the vet I saw Randolph decided arguing with me about 5 minutes was worth 10 minutes of my visit!! At the close of my less than 20 minutes visit he confessed that Small Door management in NYC had recently changed its policy and vets get 30 min visits, not an hour and if you are more than 5 minutes past your appointment, regardless if they are unable to provide service they will harass you. The visit was really pretty useless. He didn't do much but weigh her and take her temperature, open her mouth and then tell me she needed $3500 of dental care. The kicker was after the vet made his mea culpas for the hideous time policies I was literally confronted by their office manager Ashley. She approached me in the waiting area with her laptop open and her other hand/fist on her waist asking if I had a problem I wanted to discuss. She was so aggressive...she felt she had the slam dunk and forget customer service-aha I was 10 minutes past the hour not five!! Did I want to see the video? She came armed! We are not adversaries in a court of law. My god, who trained this woman? They didn't have the staff to serve me so what is her point? And seriously, it was 10 minutes-Are they a machine that has no discretion or flexibility? I repeat, I caused them no delay, NOT A MINUTE! That is arrogance because they are business is currently good. Really, because this "boutique" has decided to forfeit customer service delivery for maximizing profits by cutting appointments NOT THE FEES in half they compound this by mistreating customers because they need to keep churning to keep the $$ rolling in. Now that I am in the pet care field, I will make a concerted effort to discourage anyone from using Small Door. There are many new boutique style veterinary providers in the DC area that will appreciate new business. Fire that woman Ashley, she is a disaster. Shame on you. Post Script-to the credit of the veterinarian that I met with, he reached out and apologized, which I have a great deal of respect for taking ownership. I thought I might take down the review, but the reality is the aggression I encountered was continuous And palpable. When I stated I was going to post a negative review the response I got was go ahead see if we care, we have so much business we don't care what you do. Quite frankly, the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth, and I did as I promised, and I have strongly recommended people take their business elsewhere.
