People literally travel from all over the world to train at this gym- and it's no surprise. Andre Galvao is an incredible leader. Not all athletes can become good coaches, but Galvao stands above the rest. I have been so impressed with the way he trains his students. He is intentional to consider the whole athlete and as competitions approach, he changes his strategy to train them and help them lose weight (by keeping the room warmer than usual) and then I'll watch him throw in a game or some sort of activity that fosters camaraderie to help athletes connect and get some mental release. He takes notes and is always encouraging the athletes with the way he runs his class and his daily pep talks. It is obvious he is mindful of what everyone has the potential to become and he pushes people to achieve their best. This place is amazing. They say San Diego is the mecca of BJJ. Well, Atos is the mecca of the mecca of BJJ. Everywhere you turn, you see a world champion. Honestly, it's a little intimidating, but if you get over that and embrace that a place full of so much talent will help you become the best you can be (whatever that is for you), then you will get a lot out of this experience. The instruction is top notch. They offer tons of classes at good times for working stiffs like me. They also have a thriving women's program--the largest of any gym I've ever seen--thanks to Prof. Angelica Galvao's leadership and the other ladies in the gym. They also just started a new class for absolute beginners to give us the bare foundations of jiu jitsu. We moved from Northern CA to San Diego our old gym told us to go to Atos to train. We had no idea who they were or what it was about. We signed up and my daughter got going. I remember meeting Andre and thinking this was the nicest, most personable guy I have ever met in Jiu-jitsu. I would later find out they were top ranked and that Andre was the famous guy he is. We switched to Atos jiu jitsu 6 months ago from another jiu jitsu studio. What a huge huge difference. It's a whole new level for my 6 and 4 year olds. Amazing things about this academy: 1) huge studio with two large mats, waiting area with couches, two bathrooms (big plus for a large studio), breezy and doesn't even feel air conditioner, comfortable, many benches around the mats for parents and spectators to sit. 2) a lot of parking nearby. We never ever had issue getting a spot right at front of the door 3) flexible schedule of classes. Classes for kids of all levels offered daily!! No need to change your schedule to fit the studios. Just choose your own schedule for your kids! For example, if the kid is serious about training they can train from 4 to 6 pm daily!! We choose every week different days but always try to train three times a week at least. 4) gi and no-gi classes for both kids and adults. Every Thursday is no-gi day! 5) competition training support for kids. For serious kids wanting to do more sparings there is a competition class daily from 4 to 5. Regular kids classes from 5 to 6 pm for all ages on 2 different mats. DAILY!! 6) top notch coaches!!! I cannot say enough about amazing coaches we have. There are ALWaYS more than one coach on each mat. For kids class there is always a black belt instructor on each mat. The head coach Professor Andre Galvao is probably the most decorated jiu jutsu fighter! He won so much gold in variety of world class events! Many times AdCC champion and many times absolute world champion. His wife Angelica Galvao teaches women's class is a world class athlete as well. Coaches are beyond supportive. They go out of their way to help! My 4 year old daughter wouldn't miss her jiu jitsu class, she is addicted! 7) I have to mention this: there is a delicious acai place just seconds from Atos called R3Fresh. This place is a rare gem! It has top world class instructors. The culture is inclusive and supportive. I started Jiu Jitsu here two years back as a white belt. Was thinking that it will be hard to blind in with much younger and competitive athletes, but realized that ATOS is a place for all. There are many athletes competing at the highest leveled, but there are also working people and others doing Jiu Jitsu as a hobby and all are part of the same family. If we lived in SD my Hubs would probably train here! Staff are so very friendly. Professor Galvao is super personable and it was an honor to meet and conversate with him. We watched as they prepared for ADCC in their morning competition class. Walk ins are welcome but if wanting to jump in their competition class you need to check with staff for an invitation. It is pretty intense from watching. Nonstop for about 2 hours. Check website or call for dress code ahead of time. Parking is great. Watching is free and if you decide to roll if you check into Yelp you'll get a discount. Gym is very spacious and well ventilated. Lots of top dogs training here. Hopefully if we visit again my Hubs will wanna get in some mat time. It was a long and exhausting 2 hour drive from LA. We were both beat. read more

ATOS HQ BJJ Academy in San Diego has a  very large and diverse group of men, women and kids of all belts to train with. Professor Andre Galvo sets a humble, ethical and professional expectation for all his Professors (instructors). A newcomer will be welcomed with the same respect as an elite athlete so don't  be intimidated. You will also find many students to be respectful training partners. The kids and women's classes are also awesome. My 13 yo daugher started in the kuds class a few years ago where Professor Galvo spent nearly 45 minutes with her. They training facilty,, especially the mats, are very clean. Mats are cleaned multiple time per day. You may leave  sweaty but you won't leave with a dirty Gi. There are multiple classes to attend Monday through Friday and open mat on Sat. There are also many Brown and Black belts available for private instruction.
