We LOVE this school. My 8 and 6 year olds have been coming here since 2019. Janaina (juniors instructor) is amazing at what she does. She explains everything in a way that all of the kids get. Not only that, she truly cares for each of the kids. It makes a difference when someone enjoys their job. Both the juniors and the kids class offer a perfect balance of discipline and fun. Each junior class (8+) ends in a game (ALL the kids have so much fun with this) and the kids class (4-7) had a few games throughout the class to keep the little ones engaged. It has been such a great experience for both of my kids. My son, who has been training longer, has grown so much physically (this kid is now STRONG) and mentally and his discipline has improved tremendously. Most of the kids here compete (mine don't) but there is never any pressure to have your child compete. For now, my son is just enjoying growing in the sport. But the kids who do compete are very skilled and do well at competitions, thanks to their training here. The instruction my kids receive is top notch. It feels good as a parent to know that if you're paying for a sport, that your child is receiving the best training out there. And that is what this place offers. Everyone is extremely knowledgeable and knows what they are talking about, without being cocky. Not only are the instructors fantastic, the entire staff is amazing. The owner takes the time to stop and say hello to every single person, personally and it really does feel like a family. He remembers each family and their unique situation and really cares. His passion for the sport is felt in the way he runs his gym. The manager, Marco, also makes sure he comes over and talks to us every single day. And not in a "Hey this is my job so I'm forced to do this" kind of way, but a genuine hello and interest in each family. I bring my younger kids with me every day and I have never been made to feel like they are too loud or a bother to others in the gym. I often watch the adult classes while watching my kids and all the students in the adults class seem to help each other and really enjoy sharing the sport with each other. I often see higher belts sharing their knowledge and walking lower belts through different things. The facility is always very clean! You can tell they care about the way it looks and seem to always be looking for ways to improve the facilities, even when I couldn't imagine them being any nicer. My Daughter and I have been training at Gracie San Diego for awhile now. This is a legit, old school academy. I was referred to Gracie San Diego by my good friend who was a brown belt at another school. I was interested in learning Self Defense and my friend told me they had a fundamentals program and the Head Professor was world class. Professor Regis Lebre is a 4th degree black belt under Royler Gracie. Regis has dedicated his life to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and as a result, he has immense knowledge, great competition background and the ability to engage his students. Regis is always interested in the well being of his students and knows how to make sure there is the right balance of discipline and fun to ensure that people stay safe and learn properly. All of the people at the academy are super helpful and there is a good balance of every belt color, including a lot of black belts so you really get a wide variety of (sparring) rolls in. It also has a family atmosphere. The school also offers private lessons and they have been invaluable to my progression. The private lessons allow you to solve problems that would sometimes take months or even years to figure out on your own. On top of that, you aren't always clear on what you are doing wrong on your own. Not only is it a great time but I get an incredible workout and this is where I have seen Professor Regis show levels of Jiu Jitsu I didn't know existed. I came to Gracie San Diego in March/April of 2018. I didn't have any background in Jiu Jitsu or any martial arts. I wanted to get into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) to challenge myself physically/thought it would be a good idea to learn some type of self-defense that would actually be applicable in real life if it came down to it. I initially called in to inquire how I would go about checking the gym out. I spoke with Marco and he told me that they have a 1 week free trial. I took him up on the offer and went to check out Gracie San Diego. After going in for my first day, I knew I wanted to sign up (I signed up the second day). Though there was no pressure to sign up at any time as they want to make sure that you can see yourself being a part of the gym/you are a good fit for the gym. They even told me that if I needed a little over a week for the free trial, they would be more than happy to accommodate. My BJJ journey has been nothing short of amazing up to until now and this is all thanks to Gracie San Diego. Professor Regis (the head professor) takes the time to get to know all of his students. He knows each student by name and has a vested interest in helping all of his students (white or black belt). In a normal class, the first portion is dedicated to learning/drilling new techniques. The second portion of the class is dedicated to sparring/rolling (if you are new white belt, it will be about 2 weeks or so before you can start sparring/rolling - this is beneficial to you as by 2 weeks' time of coming in consistently, you will have enough fundamental BJJ training to start rolling). Professor Regis goes around to all belt levels and helps even with the most minor details. In addition, when it is time to spar/roll, Professor Regis pairs you up with another individual. Since Professor Regis knows each student well, he pairs you up accordingly to temperament, size, BJJ experience, etc. I really appreciate this as I am not an overly aggressive-trying to smash you every second-type of roller. Each individual is different and has a certain sparring/rolling temperament/aggressiveness. Everyone in the gym is also very helpful. Everyone from higher striped white belts to black belts help break down the large (and minor) details and has helped me better my own BJJ game. Shout out to Professor Regis, Professor Aaron, Marco, and Stan (teaches Fridays). They have all made my experience as a new white belt the best that it could have possibly been (seriously). The Professors are high level, world class instructors that give world class instruction. Newbies/fundamentals: check out the most updated schedule on their website. They currently have fundamental classes 3 days a week. I would suggest going through all of the fundamental lessons before heading over to the advanced class. This will help give you a good base of moves that you are able to use. The fundamental classes are taught by purple, brown, or black belts (Black belts that teach classes are addressed as Professor). There are 20 fundamental lessons with 5 to 6 techniques per lesson. The fundamental classes go off of an ongoing rotation; as a new comer, you will hop into whatever lesson they are currently at. Once it gets to lesson 20, it starts all over from lesson 1 (some days you may get through 2 lessons). If you've already done a certain lesson and are going to repeat, you can always request the instructor to do a lesson that you haven't done yet. Don't be afraid to do some of the lessons twice or even three times - I've repeated a lot of the lessons and each time it proves to be more and more helpful. For new comers: try out the 1 week free trial. They have loaner gi's (the traditional BJJ garment) that you will be able to borrow each day. If you decide to join, you will have to get a gi (white or blue); they have white gi's available with the Gracie San Diego patch already sewn on. If you decide to get your gi somewhere else, you will need to purchase a Gracie San Diego patch and have it sewn on. The patch is a sign of respect for the gym that you are training out of so it's important to have it on your gi! I love this academy. I started training jiu jitsu about 3 or 4 years ago and love it for many reasons. All of the professors have a ton of experience, are fun, and treat the students with respect. Professor Regis is so knowledgeable and is great to learn from. It's a great place for beginners, women, kids, men, and older adults as well. They have classes in the morning, afternoon, and at night. They also offer a strength and conditioning class on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays around 2 or 230. On my days off from work I go twice a day. It's a great workout and a lot more fun that going to a regular gym. It's also pretty cool that im pretty small (118 lbs) and I get to fight people of all sizes and i do pretty well :D Sometimes i think about moving back to my home town to be close to my family, and i almost start crying when i think about ever leaving this gym. read more
