The sesame sandwich bread is insane! Best bread I've ever tasted... They use it to make the tofu bahn mi, which is amazing, but you can also buy a four-pack of the bread to make your own sandwiches at home. If you are a sesame lover like I am, you absolutely must try it! So perfect. read more

This is a great cafe/bookstore located in downtown New Haven. It was pretty crowded when we visited but it's a large space. We grabbed a coffee which was good. We didn't get to try any of the food. They have a large selection of books and trinkets for sale. You can easily spend a few hours here getting lost in the books. There's a little bit of seating for the cafe but you're better off taking the food to go if the seats are taken. read more

My family stops here every time we are in New Haven or driving through CT. On our most recent visit to New Haven we opted just to get coffee as there is basically no indoor seating and it was a cold morning. Normally we get breakfast and lunch sandwiches and sit on the patio out front. I used to get a delicious mushroom cheese steak but it's been removed from the menu so I have switched to the breakfast sandwich which is also great. There is also a lot of packaged food and snacks. We have gotten many delicious road trip snacks here over the years. I haven't found myself there during pizza hours but would be excited to try if I did. read more

Every time I feel like I'm about to have a panic attack I come here and order the mushroom reuben. And it's so good that--though my ailments still subconsciously ail me--I forget to have a panic attack. Someone should do an experimental trial comparing panic attacks amongst individuals who have and have not consumed said reuben. Would love to see that p-value. Pretty good espresso, too. read more

Atticus Market is a small market that sells specialized products, baked goods, and groceries. I've been hearing a lot about this establishment and so I decided to come by. As I entered the market, the store was very clean and very much a college hangout to do homework and hang out with friends. I walked around a for a while to check out the products before I ordered my food. I ordered a Mushroom Ruben on Toasted Wheat Sourdough Bread, Braised Red Cabbage, Chickpea Mayonnaise, Swiss Cheese, and Sweet Pickles. The sandwich was delicious and the Red Cabbage was cooked nicely. The only critique I would say is that the sandwich was way too greasy so it's not really a healthy sandwich option. The customer service was okay. Nothing out of this world. I'm glad I came down to the establishment but next time I have to come back for the pizza, which I heard was good. read more

Surprised I haven't written a review sooner but it also feels like a place that doesn't need a review. If you know New Haven, you've been to Atticus. If you don't know New Haven but find yourself passing through in need of food, drink, groceries, etc then you've found The Spot. Most people I've interacted with who work there seem generally happy to work there....always a good sign. Their salads are great and I rotate through a few sandwich staples on their menu. My main purpose for stopping in is their bread. We get either the porridge or country sourdough but you really can't go wrong. Another reason I find myself there is to have a place to eat outside with my laptop or a place to bring the kids to eat. All in all just a great neighborhood and community vibe. read more

We went for a walk with my family, after a nice walk we decided to go to try this new coffee market place in the area of East Rock. It was packed with people, they offer pastries pizza and other things. Also they have some great options for your food shopping. The stuff was very kind and friendly. We ordered 2 pumpkin spice lattes. Both lattes were made perfectly, the pumpkin flavor was very good, not too sweet. The place offers outside seating. Here is what I love about Atticus Market: everything! I have been her more than a half dozen times and each time the whole experience is wonderful. I have tried all manner of sandwiches, wraps, and salads. Each one was as good as the next one. I was particularly partial to the Tofu Bahn Mi. Most recently, we tried the artisanal pizza (only served Thur-Fri and only by pre-order online). The pizza was absolutely out of this world. The crust is perfect: crisp, flavorful, and just the right amount of salt. We had a margherita and a kale and spicy pork pizza. I was really partial to the margherita and my husband and son were over the moon about the kale pie. The day's pizza options are announced via the online ordering system at 4:30...and if that sounds complicated to you, all I can say is it is 100% worth it. Our favorite dessert among all their wonderful baked goods is the anadama cookies. They are a ginger and molasses flavor with the perfect amount of chewiness. The outdoor patio is well-kept and there is always on-street parking nearby. The people who work the counters are always efficient and friendly. And because it's a market, not only can you pick up lunch or dinner, but you can also get some great produce or artisanal cheese while you are there! This market / cafe is a wonderful place for niche grocery items and baked goods. The interior is clean and cute, but there is very little indoor seating. There are lots of outdoor tables, and the food comes out quickly! It's mostly self serve and you can pick up disposable cutlery if you are eating there. BLT: The bread was toasted to perfection, and I really enjoyed the sauce. I wished there could be a bit more bacon. It was really tasty overall but underwhelming for the price. read more

The other day, I tripped on the rug lining the entrance and fell hard near the front door. I lay there stunned for a minute, then got to my feet and I could see every single employee looking down awkwardly, as if they wished I would go away and stop troubling them. There was no missing the fact that I fell--I'm 6' tall, and I fell with a yelp and a thud, tangling up the rug. But no one came to help. No "Hey, are you okay?" No "Can I give you a hand?" Nothing. Just feigned ignorance. Same for the customers too--it can be that kind of place. The counter staff vary from truly very friendly and helpful to borderline hostile--there's definitely an attitude with some, that they're the best game in town, and the customers are lucky to be there. I give this two stars because bakery items, sandwiches etc are fresh, and some of it's homemade. I like the bread, although they don't make it, and many of the very expensive desserts now come from Hen and Heifer in Guilford. However some of their foods are objectively weird. The chef's idea of winning flavor combinations is not for everyone, and even something like their signature ham and cheese croissant is so rich and mustardy I can't eat more than a few bites before tapping out. The market part does have a few nice things, but expect to pay 30% more than Whole Foods prices. It's a good place to sit out and chat with a professor or Yale friend. But in the end, the fact that they didn't bother to help a customer who fell in their restaurant (or even check to see why) is all I need to know. It sort of sums this place up. read more

My family had a good first experience at Atticus Market in the East Rock section of New Haven. The food was very good, but I've got to deduct .5 point for a service issue. Atticus feels like a miniaturized Whole Foods in terms of the food products, prepared foods and food order options you might see. I ordered a meatless Mushroom "Steak" and Cheese grinder. It had mushrooms with great texture and flavor, caramelized onions, cheese and a garlic Mayo sort of sauce. The filling was very good and the sesame grinder roll was fresh. I also tried the Mac and Cheese, which had a mornay type sauce and bread crumbs. It was pretty good. My wife and son both ordered breakfast sandwiches. They were fans, and the sandwiches looked great. My wife let me try her chocolate mousse dessert, which was rich and decadent. When you're the Foodie parent of a 10 year old, it's nice to have dining options with simple and healthy choices. You could get fruit salad, bean soup and a few other things that are a step up from most kid options at restaurants. For the most part service was friendly, but there was a service issue that seems to happen a few times a year at various places. While the cashier was in the middle of adding up my order in the payment system, another customer came over and interrupted my transaction. A restaurant/market obviously can't help when another customer does that, but they can help how they respond. Rather than saying let me finish and I'll help you in a moment, the cashier immediately started helping the other customer. In a minute or two, they got a less experienced person to help me, but she had to cancel my entire order (including several grocery products) and start again. It took an extra five minutes to complete my transaction. Not a great customer experience, and it could have been avoided. Without this service issue, I would have given 4.5 Stars and rounded up to 5 Stars. But with the service issue, it's 4 Stars. read more

Atticus Market is a fresh market and artisanal bakery that opened in New Haven, Connecticut in March 2021. It was founded by Charlie Negaro Jr. It is a spin-off of Atticus Bookstore Cafe in downtown New Haven (in the first floor of the Yale British Art Museum). That location was originally founded in 1975 as the Atticus Bookstore by Negaro's father Charlie Negaro Sr. Although it was originally just a bookstore, Negaro Sr. saw the popularity of gourmet coffee grow. He needed to diversify his revenue streams to survive, so his store became the Atticus Bookstore Cafe in 1981. Like the cafes that Negaro Sr. visited in Europe, the new business setup offered quality books as well as gourmet coffee and artisanal baked goods. Throughout the years, more bookstores and chains popped up. To continue growing his business, Negaro Sr. founded the Chabaso Bakery in 1995. This new business would bake and distribute baked goods throughout the Northeast. Negaro Sr. finally retired in 2019 and handed over the reigns to his son. Negaro Jr. opened the Atticus Market in the former Romeo & Cesar's Gourmet Shoppe in the East Rock section of the city. This new location would focus on groceries, baked goods and local treats. Beginning in December 2021, a new item went on the menu at Atticus Market: Pizza! Every Thursday and Friday, the kitchen offers up gourmet pizza pies from 5 - 9 pm (or until they run out of dough). Negaro Jr.'s goal is to offer customers a modern artisanal take on classic New Haven-style apizza. The dough is naturally fermented over night and made with fresh mulled flour from Maine Grains, the sauce is made using organic tomatoes from Bianco DiNapoli, and all of the cheese is supplied by Liuzzi Cheese. When I first heard about this pizza (and how it was selling out so quickly) I knew that I needed to try it. My wife and I decided to order some pies for New Year's Eve. I stopped by the market earlier in the day to order my pies and secure a time slot for later in the evening. Each week, a new menu is printed up with a list of fresh toppings. I decided to go with three New Haven classics: the Tomato Sauce Pie with Sliced Garlic, the Traditional Mozzarella and Tomato Sauce Pie, and the White Pie with Potato & Bacon (their best seller). While there, I purchased delicious-looking loaves of artisanal sourdough and challah bread. When I returned later in the evening, I saw Negaro Jr. working hard with his pizzaioli Matthew Wick and Andrew Chu. It was amazing to see them performing their art and the whole place smelled amazing. When I got home, my wife and I started out with the Tomato Sauce Pie (or what we call a 'New Haven Plain'). If you want to make it as a pizzeria in New Haven then you need to have a good sauce, and Atticus' sauce is fantastic!! The Mozzarella Pie was really good too, but we preferred the plain just a little bit more. Ironically, our favorite of the whole evening was the White Potato Pie. The Yukon Gold potatoes were sliced so thin that they were translucent. They paired really well with the onions and Liuzzi's creamy stracciatella cheese. The addition of bacon was just the icing on the cake. The pie reminded us of a similar one at Sally's Apizza. I must tip my hat to Mr. Negaro and his kitchen crew. There are fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as an assortment of many locally sourced frozen desserts and foods. The aisles are curated with other snacks, household items, coffee, tea, and cookbooks. The kitchen sells a wide assortment of hot and cold breakfast and lunch items in addition to pastries. On Thursday's and Fridays, they sell pizza starting at 4:30pm! You can order online or walk-in to buy them. I also like that they offer coffee and tea. Haven't tried the coffee yet but have tried their chicken salad sandwich (pictured) which was incredibly flavorful and complimented with avocado, cilantro, and pumpkin seed salsa macha! It went well with the herbal tea. It was really filling and I've never had anything like it before. I grew up in CT and moved to San Francisco many years ago, where I discovered how good sourdough bread can be. San Francisco has a long history with sourdough, including the oldest sourdough starter in America (at Boudin). Boudin's been around for a while but Tartine is now the standard of excellence for sourdough on the west coast. I came back home recently and tried Atticus Market's sourdough loaf and just couldn't believe how good it was. I felt like i was back home. On par with Tartine (seems like the recipe from their book maybe?) . World class. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good sourdough. read more

They have the best pizza in New Haven. I know those are fighting words, but I stand by them. If you're in on a day when they aren't doing pizza (which is only available on Thursdays and Fridays) all of the sandwiches I've had are truly excellent as well. My favorite is the steak and cheese with hot sauce. I would caution that the groceries are high end and therefore pricey. Friendly staff and great food is a wonderful combination to an amazing morning! I came to Atticus for breakfast and coffee. They have really good coffee, fresh pastries, soup and salad for lunch. My whole day can be great with a stop here in the morning. I can find excellent salads with plant based proteins so I can maintain healthy eating even if I forgot to meal prep for the day.
