I live in Las Vegas and was stopping at a near by tea shop when I saw Katalina's Cupcakes and walked inside faster then a mouse going for some cheese. This little bake shop had a ton of different cookies, cakes, brownies, and other sweets on display and since I needed a little bite before my tattoo appointment I figured this was a great place to grab a few things. I picked up some chocolate chip cookies as well as what I believe is like a cookie/brownie hybrid that was pretty dang dense and did the job of giving me a quick fill up. The chocolate chip cookies were delicious and on the softer side which is exactly what I want in a cookie while the brownie/cookie was just plain tasty. Overall, Katalina's Cupcakes gets a thumbs up from me. The employee working was super friendly, the bakery itself was cute and cozy, and the food was delicious as well. Sweet tooth need a fix? I came to try this place because it was mentioned in the brochure for Lunar Fest 2024. Walking in, I was super excited to see such a variety of sweet treats and overwhelmed trying to decide what I wanted. I ended up getting a whoopie pie and oreo chocolate chip cookie. Best vegan cupcakes in New Haven. Non-vegans agree, and said these are even better than their non-vegan counterparts! We ordered six fresh carrot cake cupcakes (vegan) with vegan cream cheese frosting. So moist and flavorful. (Warning: raisins involved!) An amazing sticky sweet edge on the top. Fluffy, sweet (but not overly so) frosting. Now this was for a birthday, so it better be amazing, but Katalina's delivered. The person taking my order (and at pickup) was super nice and helpful in choosing options. The other popular option is the chocolate vegan cupcake, which I've also had (with raspberry once, it also comes with Oreo) and was incredible. Compared with other vegan bakery providers in New Haven, their vegan cake is 1) CONSISTENT and 2) makes no sacrifices in texture or flavor. 2) good from head to toe (other establishments tend to be good at, say, the frosting then not the cake, or vice versa. This was one of my favorite spots when I worked at Yale. Please take into consideration that I have not been in a while. However, I recently discovered I have never written a review for this spot, which is an injustice. They have always been sweet all around. The cupcakes and goodies always delicious, but the staff also always kind and considerate. Way before Covid and the rise of food delivery services, they offered their cupcakes and goodies for delivery. I sent many a baked good to colleagues and friends across New Haven to celebrate, to cheer up, or just because. Katalina's made it easy and were always super helpful in the process. They always have a good variety of flavors and options to help make your day or someone else's. As I have said, it has been a minute since I have been there. My friends and I would go here after exams to chill and enjoy the cupcakes. Their cupcakes are really good! We like trying their new flavors. I have also ordered custom cakes from this store for a couple of friend's birthdays. One of them likes coconut creme pie, so we ordered a coconut base with coconut frosting, and it was delicious! I was very hopeful in trying this bakery, and got a cupcake and slice of Katalina's namesake cake to go. Unfortunately, as soon as I tried the first bite of cake, my fork was having trouble getting through it as the cake was just that hard. Even after leaving the cake outside to warm up a bit, the slice tasted very stiff and bland with no flavor besides the sweetness of the frosting. The cupcakes here are perfectly fine, but are very small for the price you're paying for one tiny cupcake. For the price, I would rather head over to Donut Crazy. The cupcakes are nothing special; the inside isn't moist and soft, and the frosting is light but a bit artificial-tasting. The range of flavors is limited, with flavors like Peanut Butter Cup and Red Velvet, though they have seasonal flavors like matcha tea and lavender. This is not to say that the cupcakes are bad; they are perfectly edible and I would recommend stopping by Katalina's if you forgot it was someone's birthday and needed a last minute treat. If you had to pick two cupcakes, try the cookies and cream and red velvet. Stay far, FAR away from the lavender flavor. While it is aesthetically pleasing, it has an objectively unappealing flavor - it tastes blatantly like soap. Neither me nor my friends were willing to finish the lavender cupcake. Also, there are lavender bits in baked into the cupcake which sounds good in theory but actually tastes horrendous, like biting into an air freshener. Coming from a dessert fiend with a 24/7 sweet tooth, me vehemently disliking a dessert says a lot. I love pretty much all desserts, and am willing to maintain and open mind when trying strange new concoctions. However, I really think the Katalina's baking team should consider refining the recipe, maybe adding a lot less lavender extract and adding some vanilla? It tastes exactly like soapy water, and the whipped cream on top tastes like foamy soapy water. One bite was more than enough for me. read more

This is a medium-sized cupcake shop on Whitney by Trumbull across the street from Pot-Au-Pho and the Hong Kong grocery. The shop is very spacious and there's plenty of seating. They also sell cookies and other baked goods as well as vegan cupcakes. The bottom line is: the cupcakes at this place are insane. They are moist, delicious, sweet but not too sweet, and just overwhelmingly flavorful. I tried a vegan coconut blondie cupcake and two vegan carrot cake cupcakes. They were so moist and just fantastic. These cupcakes are way better than even some of the best places I've tried in NYC so I was really, really surprised. Also, they are reasonably priced at under $3 a cupcake. That's not bad at all. If you're a Yalie and you haven't tried this place, you should. It's amazing and they even have a Yale-themed cupcake. Finally, kudos to Katalina for actually running the place herself. She was at the counter and I met her when I was gorging on her cupcakes. To take my disclaimer from my review of Baked & Wired, I have to admit that I've never been a cupcake person. Crumbs often makes me feel sugar sick, and I can't quite tell what's so special about Georgetown Cupcakes and Magnolia Bakery's cupcakes (don't get me wrong, they're good, I just can't quite taste the difference haha). I'm probably happiest with a funfetti cupcake (yum!). So of course when Katalina's Kupcakes opened up, I never bothered checking it out, even though I work right across the street. But one night, one of my friends came over with three cupcakes and we ended up eating them (and feeling a bit sick afterwards, they're pretty filling) and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. We had the Coconut, Peanut Butter, and Salted Caramel, and I especially liked the Peanut Butter. The frosting was a bit too sweet for me (but that's just me), but the moist bottoms were a good balance (as always, I cut my cupcakes in half horizontally and take alternating bites). I spent a Saturday morning here with a friend. We were practicing for a job interview and it was the perfect place to do it. My friends latte was good but not strong enough for her (she does like a bolder espresso than most places offer so whatever). I had an iced latte and the hostess was kind enough to put it in a mug for me (I don't like plastic). When we were leaving she gave us free cupcakes as she had to go to a show in NYC and was closing early. I hope she enjoyed the show but the cupcakes were just okay. Oh we did buy coffee cake (too many nuts) and a chocolate cupcake (dry). I'd recommend this place for a nice cuppa and a good chat with a friend. His first time away from home and his 18th Birthday, with us so far away! I found Katalina's online and contacted Kathy and she was so kind and helpful trying to figure out how we could get goodies to him. We arranged for step-son to come in and pick out goodies himself to take back to his dorm and celebrate with new friends. He said they were delicious!
