In my experience, many pastry shops serve only mediocre coffee, so this was a wonderful surprise. The décor is simple, and so are your choices, which honestly works in their favor. We ordered a hot chocolate, plain croissants, chocolate croissants, and a slice of the Kouign‑Amann. If you like a dark, rich hot chocolate that's not overly sweet, look no further, this is the place. As for the croissants, both the plain and chocolate versions were good but fairly standard. However, the real star was the Kouign‑Amann. It was served warm, perfectly crispy, and had just the right amount of sweetness without being overwhelming. The mountain of room-temperature butter should have clued me in on the wondrous delicacy ahead. My sister shared this hidden gem with me, a treat for all the walking we did. We both had a "tranche" /slice /portion of the flaky pastry originating from Brittany. While it does not look like the Kouign Amanns I've had before, it definitely tasted fabulous. We were not the only ones who thought so. While we ate our bounty at one of the two open tables, we saw person after person purchase whole galettes, possibly for an upcoming family gathering. The pastry had a sweet and crunchy crust and a buttery interior. Here, it does not resemble a croissant. Instead, the layers of dough were softer than the typical honeycomb structure of a croissant. Located right on Mont Royal Avenue -- one of my favorite pedestrian streets in Montréal -- this bakery was a standout discovery. I've had kouign-amann before (at O Petit Paris in Montréal and even Dominique Ansel's bakery in New York City), but the one here is by far the best I've ever tasted. The pastry is baked in a large round, almost like a pie, then cut into wedges to serve. The texture is exactly what you want: incredibly crispy on the outside, soft and tender inside. You can order a single slice for $3.25 CAD, a small round (about 6 servings) for $18 CAD, or a large (about 12 servings) for $33 CAD. The shop is open Wednesday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. -- so plan to arrive early before they sell out. The woman at the counter was very friendly and spoke both English and French, which made ordering simple. They also offer a few other pastries (pain au chocolat, cinnamon roll, berry tart, plain croissant), but trust me -- you come here for the kouign-amann. Oh my goodness! Five stars just for the flavor of the stable baked dish - the Au Kouing-Amann! I can't even describe the flavor but unlike anything I've had before. It's sweet and a bit buttery, light but heavy lol. Such a hard dessert to describe! It's perfect to have alone or even with cafe au lait! There was a line there when I went but I know it's typical as it's a popular spot for this goodie! They do also serve coffee/espresso! Kouign amanns are my favorite pastry, but I've never had one like this before! Instead of it being an individual pastry, it's more like a cake. You can buy a slice, but I wish I wasn't visiting so I could get a whole one. The taste is so unique. Flaky, buttery, sweet...it's perfection. We also got a chocolate croissant, but it's nothing special compared to the kouign amann. We loved it so much, we were so close to stopping by before our flight but it was too out of our way. In most places, we are used to seeing the laminated viennoiserie version, which are essentially individual pastries using a dough similar to a croissant. Here, they're doing it in more of the original form, which is a larger style cake where you purchase slices that are served to you warm. Not having had this style before, we definitely wanted to give it a try and were not disappointed. It's warm and sweet, still with layers, but having more of a soft spongy texture as opposed to the very crisp individual cake versions that can sometimes leave the roof of your mouth a bit raw. We very much preferred this version as it was quite balanced in its sweetness (the individual cakes are usually VERY sweet) with a lovely texture, and what's better than having one warm? 5 stars for the kouign amann and you absolutely must try it if you're in the area. We also tried a croissant and overall, it was a pretty average croissant. You can find better croissants at almost any other patisserie in town so I'd recommend sticking with the kouign amann. read more

This famous bake shop is just so warm and lovely as to require a visit. The first sighting shows it has a very limited menu, which is a good sign of them doing what they do well, and indeed, from first to the famous cream and butter and flour purity. The services great with excellent touches for the many new patrons to the many returning ones, explaining their baked offerings and care for the product that is very visible from the baking prep floor. Products need no explanation, but lovingly explained if you need. As for the food itself, we got everything in the menu almost. Firstly, croissants (which come in regular, raisins, almonds, and cheese outside) are true with honeycomb and layered interiors, as too many places do not care to do. They have a few small breads which we did not get. Having never been to Brittany, I knew this was the closest I would get to finally having an authentic kouing amann- and wow, I don't think I can settle for the variations made of this delicious treat. Their croissant selections were divine as well, especially the Almond Croissant - YUM! I also ordered a Latte and it paired perfectly with the pastries. This bakery was so good that we ended up coming back before we left Montreal. It's more of a grab-and-go, as there's little to no seating, however the service is quick. They were out of the petit Kouing amann when we arrived so the lady was nice enough to take our name down and we could return in half an hour for a fresh one! Firstly, what's with the spelling thing going on? Sometimes it's written Kouing and sometimes it's Kouign. This can be seen inside their restaurant, or even on their website. The last time I came, I can't believe they didn't have their signature Kouign-Amann. I sure was missing out. They're eggy and amazing, and you NEED TO EAT THEM FRESH. They were so, so good. This is the first time my wife and I have had a Kouing Amann or a Breton butter cake, and we were hooked from the first bite. It's a sweet, ultra buttery, and layered cake which reminded us a little bite of kugel. The outside had a crunchier caramelized layer which paired wonderfully with the softer inside. It was sort of like a thicker and less airy croissant cake. We awed at the amount of butter they were working with in the bake. We also shared a croissant which was perfect.
