    Apple Pie split in half

My second time here in less than a month and just as good as before. I ordered the Sausage & Egg Sandwich on an English Muffin. The only thing that I didn't care for was the breakfast sausage, it had a thick skin like a Polish Sausage. The sausage had a very good flavor and a good size to boot. My friend ordered the Strawberry French Toast with fresh strawberries and Maple Syrup. Her order was a good size big enough to take half home for breakfast the next day. She ordered the Breakfast Blend tea and said it was good. The coffee I ordered was very good and freshly made. In a matter of minutes your order is served piping hot. Depending on how many people are there it can be a little noisy from time to time. They have an all-gender bathroom which was very clean. In cold weather sit in the back away from the front door.

I had this bakery saved after having an amazingly delish pastry from them at the apple fest last year, and was so happy to finally get to try them this weekend! Very cute ambiance inside, there were plenty of people sitting and enjoying their food and drinks with friends. Service was friendly and quick. We got the sausage and egg English muffin sandwich and raspberry almond croissant. The sandwich was solid, although I feel like could have had some added spice. The real star was the croissant - it was so buttery and flaky while at the same time not feeling too heavy. Can't wait until our next visit to try the rest of the pastries - the cinnamon rolls and babkas were as big as my head!

I was excited for my first visit to Au Levain after awaiting their arrival on Lincoln Ave!! I've followed them on instagram and their pastries have looked so good, but I wasn't expecting the interior to be so large and cute, too!! My friend and I each had a specialty latte (there were a couple to pick from) which were definitely tasty. My only feedback is it would've been nice if they'd stirred them, instead it was very much syrup/milk on the bottom half and espresso on the top half, needing a good mix. The pastries were both spectacular. I was surprised to see an entire menu of breakfast and lunch items, also! The interior was absolutely adorable, though I will mention it got quite loud! I'm glad to see a local business is booming, but keep the noise level in mind as you map out who you'll be spending time with here.

Coffee and cozy vibes all around.

Good pastries, great ambiance overall. Parking is plentiful in the area if that matters. Definitely a nice little place to sit and enjoy pastries and coffees - except that it's probably a little too popular these days with waves of business coming in every 20 minutes or so on the weekend.

Tasty sausage egg muffin sandwich, bread was soft and warm. Flavorful sausage and can't ever go wrong with caramelized onions. Delicious lavender latte. Customer service can work on greeting everyone the same, so they can genuinely feel "welcome in."

From the outside you might think: Au great another French place. I bet they have 8$ croissants or some shit. But then by the time you actually came in you'd piss yourself on purpose for not coming in sooner. Au levain is owned by angel chavez who is the pastry chef of bistro champagne. And while yeah there are croissants he also brings way more creative items to the table that makes this my favorite. Corned beef croissants anyone ?? Additional items have included conchas, paczki but you really have to keep an eye on the menu that changes every week. I'll be back and I'm happy to support and have another Hispanic owned business in the neighborhood.

I love that Au Levain has a permanent storefront now! This store is full of light and is a space I could spend a few hours in. I popped in on a sunny winter day and did all but curl up in the sunshine after enjoying my breakfast wrap. It was so good! I loved the presentation and that they automatically included sour cream and two salsas. Thank you for using real dishes! The breakfast wrap was beautifully balanced. I got a little bit of everything in each bite. Bacon, egg, cheese, hash brown, avocado...it was really lovely. I am so excited to go back soon to try more menu options and a latte! Parking is paid on Lincoln, but if you just go on any of the side streets you'll likely find free non-permit parking.

This place of course has delicious baked goods, but did you know it also has a great brunch? I recommend the chilaquiles and coffee! Occasionally they will also do special bakery releases. I got the egg nog cheesecake last winter and it was delicious! Parking is easy down the side street.

I thoroughly enjoyed this breakfast. Sandwich was good but admittedly doesn't rank against Chicago's best. What does rank as the new best cookie in the fucking city is the "crookie". My simple mind is under the impression that is simply a melted cookie atop a croissant but regardless of the method this thing is magical. Quiche was damn near perfect. The fact that is was served with a salad gave you an amalgam of textures.

This is a new trendy baker in the North Center neighborhood on Lincoln Avenue. There is a lot to like about this place, but some things that need improvement or I wish would change. I've visited twice and on my two trips I got a hot latte (they brew Sparrow Coffee), a babka (my first visit) and their breakfast warp. (My second visit). The Pros: The quality of the food is excellent, at least their baked goods are. The babka I bought on my first visit was delicious, even after a walk and car ride home in the cold weather. I felt for the price, seven dollars, it was good value, given its size. The breakfast wrap that I ordered was good, but excellent. The ingredients were fresh and yummy, but a bit on the small size for the price. They have good coffee. Sparrow is very good coffee and it was nice to find it so close to home. The latte itself was good, not great. They have a good atmosphere. The place is laid back and I didn't get any air of pretentiousness. The Cons: First, it's expensive and I question the value of a seven dollar croissant. I have not tried the croissant yet, but I want to in the future to see if it's worth it. Second, once they run out of something, they don't make any more. The first time I went I got there around 11:00 am and they were already out of croissants. While I liked my babka a lot, that was not what I wanted to order. Third, they don't have ice coffee drinks. I wanted an iced latte, but all they had was a hot one. Not a deal breaker, but it left me surprised and disappointed. Lastly, service was good, not great. On first trip, the person who helped me seem anxious, stressed and curt. On my second trip the staff member who help was nice, but not exceptional. Overall, all service average out to be good. In sum, this is a very good bakery and I look forward to trying more of their pastries and savoy breakfast dishes. It is place you should visit. However, I wish they had iced coffee drinks, would make their pastries bigger (to justify the price) and make more of what they sell so I don't have to get there super early just to buy a croissant.

    Haley K.

The staff was nice and helpful. Quite a bit of seating too! My crookie was warm and delicious.

Chorizo, egg and kale wrap, with a chocolate pistachio croissant, scrumptious!

I've been a customer of almost 10 years and have been obsessed since they first opened their doors at a different location. I literally live an hour away without traffic and even longer with traffic, but I make sure to stop by or send someone else to get it for me at least once a month or more. I love the amazing cakes that are so delicious and unique but on top of that, it is Asian owned, LGBTQ supporting, etc. A lot has changed since their little storefront with no seating. The bakery is now a full on cafe and I'm so happy to see how much they've grown and how successful they are. And while it is glorious, I will say I miss the sweet neighborhood charm and great customer service it used to have. Getting in touch with the bakery through phone or text can be tough and to be honest, sometimes one of the people working there is kind of...very mean. It had me questioning if I should keep coming back. I just love this bakery so much though and being raised by parents that had a small food business, I can't help but want to support. I had a particularly difficult last minute request for the bakery a few weeks ago and I was reminded why this place is so great. It had been YEARS since I made this specific request, which was an order for a slice of cake for every flavor and a cupcake for every flavor. This is a BIG and time consuming request, especially if it's last minute. Unfortunately I come to the city whenever the traffic isn't atrocious, so it's always last minute. Dom absolutely pulled through though. Even though there were other employees there (I saw two others but one disappeared and then another male was kind of walking around the cafe and such), Dom took this giant request and fulfilled it himself. The other gentleman (not the mean person previously mentioned) was actually who I made the request to, but he told Dom to do it. I was kind of confused why they didn't do it together but idk, maybe the other guy isn't allowed to handle food? Who knows. Regardless, this request obviously took a long time and the line was getting longer; people were getting a little restless but Dom stayed calm but was swift. I swear he was moving faster than most people in the industry could with a cake knife like that. He was not impatient or rude to me at all. He was just there to do his job as fast and well as possible. It's so rare to see that type of work ethic. He is also so obviously proud of the bakery and the food they serve which makes you feel good about being a patron there. So although I continue to have an unpleasant experience with one particular employee there, Dom keeps my love for this bakery alive. He reminds me of what this bakery was like when they first opened their doors. I hope Dom is cherished there and I bet he is considering his work ethic. I will continue to support this bakery and I recommend everyone else to support as well. It may not be that small little shop anymore but Dom is a reminder of the heart of the place.

Seating is pretty limited, but it looked like most folks were picking up pastries to go, but either way you order at the front one party at a time. Truffle Croissant (5/5): A must get, super intense black truffle against a perfectly flaky and chewy buttery croissant. The large bits of pearl sugar add pops of sweetness that I loved. Mango Tart (4.75/5): Mango really shines through with melt in your mouth texture and fruity sweetness. Coconut pasty cream adds almost a nutty flavor and luscious mouthfeel to contrast against the lightly crunchy cookie crust. Prosciutto Croissant (4.5/5): Pastry again impeccable with sharp saltiness from the prosciutto and cheese. Still absolutely delicious, but hard to recommend with how good the other items were. Longanisa Breakfast Sandwich (5/5): Another life changing bite. Hash brown add on is unbelievably crunchy against the egg bite that is pillowy soft and fluffy roll. Longanisa is salty and sweet, just the best way to start your morning. Lumpia (3.75/5): Comes out piping hot and the meat still stays juicy and bouncy. Good, not crazy. Filipino Breakfast with Longanisa and Tocino (4/5): Garlic rice is fluffy, but heavy on the garlic exactly like I love it. Sunny side up eggs were perfectly cooked and the two meats were actually the weakest components, a bit chewier than expected. Chicken Adobo (4.25/5): Chicken has almost a nice char on the outside and doused in a tangy sauce with crispy garlic bits. Tender and juicy, personally preferred this over the longanisa and tocino. Sweet Corn Hojicha (2/5): Only real whiff that we tried. While you could really taste the corn, unfortunately ended up being wayyyy too sweet and I couldn't have more than a sip or two.

The sandwich came out in less than 5 minutes! It was definitely a good, tasty sandwich, but I wouldn't say it was amazing. Flaky dough, soft pistachio center and creamy top with a sharp citrus cut. Peach + raspberry Melba danish. The peaches were soft. I'm not familiar with a Melba dessert but the center of this was almond paste which is not my favorite but if you like almond and tart danish it would hit the spot. Raspberry espresso cream cheese cinnamon roll was a fun fruity twist to a cinnamon roll. Couldn't really tell there was espresso though. Blueberry lime cheesecake danish. I also liked this one because of the lime. It really cuts through the heaviness. The fruits on top were also fresh. They also have one day old blind boxes. I grabbed a 6 piece day old box to go and it was actually 6 different pasteries, half sweet and half savory! It only repeated 1 of the pasteries I had originally tried so I'm excited to try more, especially the savory ones. It's an amazing deal if you just want to try a variety of flavors. Tried the Hot dog danish - really good! Upscale pigs in a blanket vibes. The tiny fried are seasoned perfectly and add a fun crunch. The splashes of Dijon cut through and it doesn't feel oily at all.

They shared that the strawberry milk croissant was their bestseller, so I opted for that. It was filled with fresh strawberry mascarpone and fresh strawberry puree. Despite the croissant's decadent appearance, it was not at all too sweet. I'm not typically the biggest croissant fan (I know, I know, no one is perfect) but this pastry blew me away. Their attention to detail and commitment to excellent customer service truly stood out. One feature we especially love is that they keep the recipe and design of your wedding cake on file. Every anniversary, they can recreate your wedding cake or a cake in any size you choose. We've continued this tradition, and each anniversary cake has been just as delicious as the original while bringing back wonderful memories of our wedding day. If you're looking for a bakery that is responsive, dependable, and delivers an outstanding product, I highly recommend Bittersweet Bakery for your wedding cake or any bakery needs. They responded promptly to our questions and requests, unlike some businesses that never replied to estimate inquiries. Their customer service and quality were truly exceptional. A heartfelt thank you to Samuel who conducted the Cake Tasting and the entire staff at Bittersweet Bakery for helping make our dream wedding a reality. We will always be grateful and look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries with your incredible cakes.

The quiche is always fantastic, and anything out of the pastry case is a must. Drinks are good as well! Such a cozy spot to grab coffee with a friend (or give in to the temptation of snagging a pastry on your way to the brown line)
