I didn't even try the pie! The bacon/onion quiche was so good. Generous portions, very fresh and crisp salad on the side. Turkey chili was robust and flavorful. Hottest day of the year but no air conditioning was my first clue this would be a disappointing experience. I had ordered a whole pie ahead of time and arranged to pick it up on my way to a friend's home. I was disappointed that the pie came out of the freezer. Came here with friends on the recommendation of one of them. I wasn't even hungry, but the menu looked SO good that I ended up getting a sandwich--perfectly warm, melty, toasty and savory--as well as a slice of pie and a cookie. The salad that came with had apples and a light vinaigrette and was a nice counter to the sandwich. The flavorings of the seasonal lemonades are made in-house and it was so refreshing and good that I got a second! I wish I had gotten the name of the person who helped us, because her recommendations were spot-on, and it was all such a great and unexpectedly delightful experience considering it was an off-the-cuff visit. Totally by happenstance, I found that First Slice opened a new location. Their French silk pie is heavenly... I needed to write a review about this location anyway, right? I mean of course I needed to stop in here. This location is reasonably sized, in part because it's where Marmalade was located before that restaurant closed. I expect when COVID is further in our rearview they'll squeeze several more tables in here. Much like the other First Slice locations I've been to, they have coffee and whatnot, a limited menu, and lots of pies. There are a couple of refrigerator cases where they have some of their frozen pies like the French silk, key lime, blueberry something or other.... I saw some little mini versions of their chicken pot pie (which is delicious and I almost bought one, but think I'll purchase a full-size one for Easter next week). And they have some dairy items for purchase as well. I was not totally impressed with the service, though. I brought several items to the counter for purchase, and when I had paid the person didn't say thanks, goodbye, have a good day... nothing. Just turned away and started talking to one of their coworkers. It wasn't a mistake, because I took me about 10 seconds or so to make sure I my phone put away (the use ApplePay, amongst other payment methods), and had the items I'd bought secured in my hands because I wasn't asked if I needed a bag nor offered one. So... ok, thanks. I'd expect parking to be somewhat of an anomaly on this section of Montrose much of the time. It's near several other businesses, and only on one corner is there a parking lot, whose spaces are of course for the businesses in that building. I did get a space though so maybe it's easier than I thought? They also are preparing to have outdoor seating, and though it wasn't set up today (it was far too cool for people to eat outside), that will add additional seating once the weather warms up. read more

As you may know by my reviews I'm not a fan of loud music or noisy places in general but First Slice of Pie was a disappointment in the music department. The music, the staff was always talking all the time even singing some of the songs. We had to raise our voices just to speak to each other, that shouldn't happen in a coffee shop. The only thing good about this place is the pie, coffee/tea the selection of pies, and the personable counterperson. I had the Toffee Coffee Pie, it was really good it has a nice mousse-type consistency with toffee coffee sprinkles on top, my friend said her Key Lime Pie was not firm enough like most Key Lime Pies. After we placed our order the lady said" I'll bring everything over to your table", that was a nice touch. The bathroom is next to the back door and you must go through part of the kitchen with people coming in and out with food carts. Sorry to say but I won't be going back. read more

Food is made fresh and is high quality. I love their sourdough bread loafs. Perfect place to have a coffee lunch with friends. Small intimate casual seating area. Service is very friendly and kind. Their pie changes daily so we decided to try some of their fruit seasonal ones! - Blueberry & Peach - pretty good though on the sweeter side - Raspberry & Pear - this one stole the show! SO SO good!! I stopped in here to pick up a couple of slices of pie to go. It was my first time here and I was surprised to see how much the space has transformed since Marmalade closed. It's very casual inside and there aren't a lot of tables. The bulk of the space is occupied by two large counters, one of which contained a bunch of pie and cheesecake offerings. I was greeted promptly by a friendly and helpful employee who provided some recommendations upon request. I opted for the mango margarita cheesecake (very good, but I've had better cheesecake), and the sour cherry pie, which was great. The cost including tax and gratuity was less than $11, so incredibly reasonable. I will definitely go back and try some new things next time. read more

Finally got over to first slice on Montrose and Damen. This is a very casual coffeehouse/dining room experience. Brunch is served on Sundays. Menu is limited but delicious, not to mention homemade pie for dessert (no pie picture because I ate it before I thought to grab one!). Omelettes are huge with a nice variety of additions available, mine was smoked Gouda, ham, and mushrooms. The potatoes were light and crispy. The delicious salad was unexpected but a nice addition (it also had a good vinaigrette). Really good coffee. Order at the cashier and grab a seat at a table or carry out. Pie-as always- to die for. I've had good experiences at their other locations, but this one needs work. The slice of pie I received was ice cold, partly frozen and hard. It was supposed to be a chocolate cream pie, not chocolate ice cream. When your restaurant has the word "pie" in the name I'm afraid that kind of screw-up is a dealbreaker. The staff seemed unprepared. When I came in there were two guys making drinks and no one taking orders for several minutes. The barista who did eventually take my order looked about 16 years old. I didn't bother to let them know about the frozen pie because I could tell they didn't have it together. There is also no decoration at all in the space, so it's not attractive or welcoming. Overall it just seems like this place isn't ready to be open yet. read more

This is such a nice atmosphere to enjoy a slice of pie and coffee. If that's your thing, or you can have a complete meal, lasagna, burritos, or whatever's on the daily special. I highly recommend the sour cherry Michigan pie. It is amazing. It was a simple, but comfortable dining area, not a lot of chairs and tables, but usually not particularly crowded. Besides dessert pies, First Slice has wonderful quiche. The best deal is to buy a whole pie. It may seem pricey at 30 plus dollars, but it weighs a ton! You really get a lot of meals after cutting it up and freezing the individula slices. Everyone I've ever served it to went to buy their own to take home to the family. Great job - and an added bonus - It's called First Slice, I was told, because they donate the proceeds of the fist slice of any pie to charity. That can only be a good thing. Way to go! read more
