Was meeting a friend who lives in Illinois so picked a place downtown, so glad we chose Aubergine! Food -- I ordered the yellow curry chicken and my friend ordered cashew chicken. We had spring rolls to share. I absolutely loved mine... there is something about coconut milk in curries that makes me happy. Add in carrots that are cut to look like sunshine or flowers? It's so fantastic! Tami was equally happy with hers. The spring rolls were so crispy and awesome. Location -- The interior is simple and nice, I was reminded of a trip to Thailand as I saw the symbol of the king. It's just steps away from the dome and conventions. And parking in the 7th street garage was convenient. The staff was great -- quick and friendly service. They stayed busy but were always on top of things for us and everyone else there. read more

My first inclination was to give only a 1-star rating simply because both imported beers were beyond their expiration. Then I got the food. Larb: served in a bowl, not on a lettuce leaf. It was good, but I'm already kicking myself for believing the ratings to be the top Thai food restaurant in the area. I've uploaded the photo for the Singha beer dates. 5 years old!! Fill date: Oct 2020. Best By: Oct 2021. When I first sent it back, the bartender showed the older woman the dates, and she waved him away and told him to give me a different beer. Unfortunately, the Chang beer - he didn't bring the bottle back, so no photo - was also expired. The printed year on the bottle was 2012. The main woman behind the counter got upset when I sent the second beer back so she elected to walk over to me directly. Her words: "Our beer is not good enough for you. We'll just throw it out, no charge." Thank you for not charging me for the spiked beer that I didn't drink. ‍ So, it makes me wonder just how much of what they sell is actually still good and not expired, yet the serve it anyway. The striking thing is that the bartender didn't know how yo read the dates and didn't know the beers were expired. He doesn't know to read the specific labeling, so he cannot be blamed. Not to worry, I'll be phoning the BBB in the morning to ensure they come in and inspect the place. This is unacceptable and I didn't appreciate her implying I was being a beer snob. Stopped for dinner during a conference at the convention center right across the street! So glad I did! The decor is simple and clean, very inviting. The dining room is not too big and a little under half full around 530 on Sunday. Service was fast and friendly. I ordered chicken pad Thai medium spicy. It came out in under 10 minutes and was piping hot even when I had eaten half of it and boxed the rest! The flavor was delicious and the ingredients fresh. Usually when I order medium spicy, it's too sweet and not spicy at all but this place got it right! Just enough to make my nose run, but tolerable. I cannot comment on the service as I ordered my food to go. It was ready when I arrived and while I had to wait a few minutes to receive it (all the tables were filled and wait staff was super busy), it was still hot when I finally dug in. The drunken noodles were a 7.5/10 - they could've been spicier but they had a decent amount of veggies and meat. This Thai spot is a stones throw away from the convention center and the surrounding hotels and is a great option for food with actual flavor (we've all had conference food even at the hotels and 9 times out of 10 it's awful. Save yourself and come here instead). I had just arrived on a business trip staying at one of the marriott's nearby. It was about 30 degrees out and falling, and I intended to grab the food for take away, but when I got there It was cute not crazy crowded so I decided to just eat there at their bar. The restaurant is small but cleanly decorated. There are about 6 chairs at the bar and a little more than a dozen tables. I hadn't had more than snacks on the plane for breakfast and lunch and was so hungry for something with actual flavor. I settled down at the bar and was greeted quickly. I ordered a glass of wine, cup of tea, a pad Thai with beef, side of white rice, and a cup of yellow curry soup. The server asked if I wanted everything out at the same time or in what order and I requested whenever anything is ready for it to come out. Everything arrived quickly and I dug into the Pad Thai first. I asked for a medium spice level and it was good. Not too spicy so that I can't taste other ingredients, but enough to have a little heat. The beef was good and so was the tofu. The rice noodles with egg in the tamarind sauce with crushed peanuts plus the proteins were so tasty. The yellow curry was also flavorful both with and without the rice. Really great for a colder evening. From my seat I got to see all of the food coming up in the window from the kitchen to go to all the tables and so many other things I saw looked tasty as well. read more

We had a great experience here! The restaurant had a calm, relaxing atmosphere and was very clean. The staff was friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked in. We started with appetizers, and they were excellent. Everyone in our group of five really enjoyed their meals--the food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. Despite our larger group, everything came out surprisingly quickly, which was a nice bonus. If you're looking for delicious Thai food, great service, and a comfortable place to enjoy a meal, I would definitely recommend this restaurant. We'll be back! read more

This is a small somewhat casual place with simple, but nice decor and lots of light from the big glass front. The service was so friendly and warm and they helped make suggestions about which dishes we might choose. Everything we ordered was excellent and the standouts were the mango sticky rice dessert and the wings. They're both must order! They have a full bar and take their time making the drinks look and taste great. It started to get full when we were leaving (they also have a brisk takeout business it looks like) so it took a few minutes to pay, but you do pay table side. Definitely worth coming for. read more

We had reservations for 12 on a Monday night. Staff were very accommodating and food was delicious. I ordered the Stir Fry Aubergine and Tofu. You can give your heat preference when ordering. I did mild and it still had some kick to it. Everyone had a great time. The only thing we couldn't understand was the amount of time it took to get the checks out. We understood that they would only do 3 checks for our table, so we grouped up. But, waiter ended up just splitting everything 3 ways. We figured it out amongst us. This establishment is on 7th steer near Washington. No parking lot. So, you need to park on Washington or in the Parking Garage next door. Restaurant is bright and cheery. Very welcoming. The server was very friendly and able help me sort out the spice level. I selected the pad kee mau and it promptly arrived. The flavor profile was on point and large portion. Slightly disappointed with the noodles as they were a bit hard/not fully cooked and I'm more familiar with wider rice noodles. I hit the "surprise me" wheel on Yelp and here I am! This cafe is so bright with a modern, crisp look. There's no more than about 10 tables and a bar area. The staff was very kind and attentive. My food was out in about 10 minutes and everything was yummy! The veggie pad thai was classic. The dumplings were more like a steamed meatball in wonton wrappers. Ultra processed junk food in a nicely decorated cozy spot. I went there because of the name. I really wanted eggplant. Well apparently their namesake dish on the appetizer menu was not available so I ordered a coconut curry with the gluten free rice noodle option. At the end, they asked me how I liked it and I said it was too sugar sweet. And then they said "oh maybe that was in the powder or maybe the milk." First of all ,why are they using a powder? That is an ultra processed food and I expect better from a restaurant of the caliber that their decor was trying to portray. "Coconut milk is not sweet," I told them, The waiters then said something about "milk." I wondered why he didn't say coconut milk this time... and realized the taste reminded me a bit of carnation condensed sweetened milk. So I asked him if the dish had cow milk in it and he said "yes it has several milks ". I know Thai food pretty well and a coconut curry made the correct way should never have cow milk in it. I happen to be intolerant of cow milk, which many people who are gluten-free tend also to be. They made it very clear that it's entirely my fault for not mentioning that allergy and on this point they are right . I somehow thought that the word Thai meant that they cook authentic Thai, but she explained to me that it's actually more inspired by Thai and they take creative liberties. Anyway the point here is that this is not honest nourishing food that they make from scratch. It is the kind of pseudo-food that is leading to the obesity and diabetes edetic in this country. I challenged them to rethink this approach and to do better and introduce St. Louis to real Thai food, which is delicious and healthy. Still giving two stars for the ambience and decor and the male waiter/bartender who was friendly. read more

I was not expecting to find a place like this in St Louis. We were trying to get calzones but the restaurant had a water leak and we had to find somewhere else to go. Happiest accident ever. The staff were super, very friendly and attentive. The decoration and music was relaxing, it put me at ease and was just a great place to eat. And the food was stellar. Kao Soi is a little like Kaopoon, and just as delicious. I went for medium spice, which was perfect for me. The broth was so flavorful and filling too. This is as comfortable as any comfort food you've ever had. Great spot if you want something good. I'll say the price was not bad either, $20 for my meal. read more

We discovered Aubergine Cafe recently and it went to the top of our list because the reviews were so good. It's located in the heart of downtown, basically on the corner of Washington Ave. and 7th St...we went on a Friday night and it was less busy than expected. The mushroom curry puffs were fantastic. The cucumber and onions they came with were sweet and tasted great with the puffs. The Kao Soi was so good and it's a huge portion. I'd order it again. It is slightly spicy but the flavor is incredible. The tofu was nice and spongey (I love the texture). My date loves shrimp and isn't really a fan of breaded shrimp or coconut but decided to try them based on other reviews and he said they were good. He also really enjoyed the Sweet Basil Chili Bomb with the stew beef. The service was fine. The ambiance is relaxing, we enjoyed the music. It's a bright, well lit place. I'll definitely return to get more tofu Kao Soi. Can't recommend this place enough especially if you want to support downtown businesses. read more

After explaining this to the wait staff they decided to honor the old price, which was on the menu we were given. They ended up giving us money back after we had already charged. I visited Aubergine Cafe and ordered three items: the Mango with Sticky Rice, Drunken Noodles or Pad Kee Mao, and the Kao Soi. I'll divide my review into equal points to give a fair assessment. The atmosphere of this quaint around the corner restaurant is good. However, the Kao Soi, did Soi disappoint. I had expected a fragrant and rich curry, similar to what I'm accustomed to, but instead, I received a dish that resembled Tom Kha with Chicken and Noodles two Ways. It was decent, but it wasn't exactly Kao Soi. I suppose Kao Soi is more of a luxury item to charge more. .75 out of 1.666 The all allusive Pad Kee Mao or Drunken Noodle. First let me start off by saying Pad Thai noodles does NOT work for Drunken Noodles! I do not know what's up with this area using the wrong items for the dishes. Pad Kee Mao has wide thicker noodles, so they can hold up to a bit more cooking to achieve that almost point of a smoke flavor. Pad Thai Noodles, does not give me that toothsome mouthfeel one is seeking and the sauce does not cling to the noodles the same. Speaking of the sauce, it was just ok, It did taste like a premade sweet chili sauce vs some authentic scratch cooking. .25 out of 1.6 Now, let's talk about the Mango with Sticky Rice, my favorite Thai dessert. It's a simple combination of fresh fruit, seeds, sauce, and rice. It's a refreshing and clean bite, and this one was quite good. What I did not enjoy and why this wasn't a perfect score is with fresh fruit being readily available and it is summer, I would've loved to have seen this freshness being taken into consideration for this dessert. 1.0 out of 1.6 - not bad! Overall, Aubergine Cafe will most likely NOT not be my first or fifth choice for Thai food in the area. read more

Outstanding food. We're had the pad Thai, Tom Yum soup and a few other entrees; all were 10/10. Hot, fresh, authentic, delicious. Service? Could use some improvement, this the 1 star deduction. It took some time to have our order taken, and a very long time to get boxes and checks. We had to ask multiple times for the check. This was unfortunate, because by this time, there were people waiting for tables. The employees were all working hard, so it's not like they were standing around doing nothing, but I felt they weren't super efficient. Cute little place, somewhat small, but not too small.
