This was our first time here and I was nervous about the mixed reviews. The food was incredible and the portions were very large. You get the bang for your back especially when it came to the amount of protein in our dishes. The service was good and our waitress was super nice and attentive. We were the only people in the restaurant which was a little surprising especially considering it is such a large place with lots of seating. OPEN AGAIN!! One of the most authentic tasting Thai places in town. Environment: We carried out from this restaurant this time. The service was quick and efficient and the staff is very friendly. The restaurant's ambiance hasn't changed since they closed. It's a quiet restaurant with wooden finishes. A bit on the older side, but definitely gets you in the mood to eat Thai cuisine. Food: We tried the Pad Kee Mao with Tofu this time. The flavors fired on all cylinders-- sweet, salty, spicy, and umami. Vegetables stir fried to still be crunchy and the tofu crispy on the outside and spongy on the inside. The noodles had just the right amount of bite to them. The taste is authentic and you can tell that they use quality ingredients and spices. I can say that the quality has not changed from before they closed--- except for maybe a bit of lacking spice (but our spice tolerance is just higher). Quality, fantastic food at a solid price point compared to others around... this gets a highly recommend from us!! We've been to this restaurant several times in the past 6 years and they're always pretty consistent with their portions and their flavors. It's one of our favorite Thai places in STL because of its authenticity. Rating: 4/5, authentic taste and quality ingredients. The only redeeming quality here is the service. The servers were very welcoming, kind and helpful. The food on the other hand wasn't that great. It was still somewhat enjoyable but I can't see myself coming back here. The food was not fresh and you could especially tell with the chicken. Some other friends got chicken dishes and they had the same experience. They got a variety of dishes and noted that it didn't really match the flavor profile of traditional Thai food as they are much more familiar with the cuisine than I am. I got the spicy tom yum soup and it had a decent spicy, tangy flavor so seasoning seemed fine enough. One of my friends' dishes had a piece of eggshell in it. Shady business. Overcharged me and my friend who dined in last Saturday for lunch. It appears they deliberately added extra tip. Save your receipts and tip amounts if you visit this place. Food was mediocre as well. Pad see ew was flavorless and greasy. Pad thai was more bean sprouts than noodles. Funny enough, we even saw the server who took our order go across the street to the asian market and buy groceries they were missing before making our food. Aside from the PALMETTO ROACH I found in my green chicken curry dish & all the flies you have to fan away away while eating, the entire back half of the restaurant near the kitchen smelled funky & was extremely grungy looking. I went to Thai Gai Yang for the first time about a month ago and the next week I went back--it was that good. I'm shocked that both times I went to pick up my to-go order, the place was empty. The prices are great for the portion size (massive). Me and my boyfriend have tried the pad thai with chicken, the pad peanut noodle with tofu, the tom yum soup, and the shrimp spring rolls. Came by on a Sunday lunch for take-out and there wasn't that much people there or getting take-out. Process went extremely smoothly - called over the phone. - Pad Thai - So disappointing. I don't think this dish is really authentic because its missing the "sour" and peanut taste of a traditional dish. Seems to be a little soy sauce based and it was extremely oily. - Gang Dang (Red Curry) - Actually so good and spot on. I especially enjoyed the coconut milk flavor and loved how many ingredients there were in the dish. Definitely recommend getting this dish but I will say that the rice they give is not enough for the curry. - Pad Kee Mao - I think this one is better than Pad Thai. I like this place! Not only is it close by, but it also has some pretty good food. While there hasn't been a place that I feel matches Thailand 100% (and not quit sure if that is possible), Thai Gai Yang Cafe is delicious and has some great choices! Whether you want a take out meal, place to dine in, or just when you are craving Thai, try it out! We ordered Pad Gra Pow with chicken, Pad Pak Ruam (Veggie stir fry) and Red Curry (I think with pork) for take out during quarantine. The Curry and Pad Gra Pow both had delicious sauces and a good kick of spice. We would order again! The Pad Pak Ruam could have used more flavor but, for a simple veggie dish, it was tasty. Apparently, this is a second location for nearby restaurant with another name so the address did not coincide with restaurant name. Once seated, we waited a long time to order food and longer to receive food, especially considering there were only two tables and our party of two was one of them. The chicken satay was so dry we could barely chew it. The panang had an unfamiliar flavor in a dish we typically order at Thai restaurants. We had the pot stickers, crab rangoon, gang panang, and pad thai. The pot stickers were fried wonton wrappers stuffed with chicken and vegetables with special sauce. The chicken in the pot stickers were well seasoned, honestly they were the main highlight of our meal. The crab rangoon was alright, they were plain. Nothing differentiated them from any other crab rangoon. Gang panang had a strong ginger taste when I tried it for the first time. I normally prefer tasting the coconut, but it wasn't the case for this meal. The pad thai wasn't as flavorful as other pad thai I have eaten before. A place of usual selection of Thai dishes - Pad Thai, Tom Yum soup, a wide range of curries and the like. As well as being good value, the food is mostly authentic and flavorsome. The Thai-style fried rice was awesome. It may be the cleanest among the three Thai restaurants on the Loop, with no sewage odor or dead bugs served in water. The place wasn't roomy and tables were close to each other, and some wobble, but it was nicely decorated with vibrant colors and holiday-schemed lights. Portraits/posters of the Thai boxing champions watch over proceedings. It felt warm and cozy that it's easy to forget the traffic and the noisy construction outside on the Delmar Loop. In short... my food at Thai Gai Yang was pretty good, but the atmosphere was a total snoozer. I stopped in on a weeknight with a friend and we sat at a table by the window which was pretty nice because I could look up and down Delmar, which is a good thing, because it was silent inside the restaurant! The kind of silent where you just end up not speaking to each other because you feel like everyone else can hear you. My yellow curry dish was pretty standard but was good... lots of chicken, potatoes, onion, and a yummy yellow curry sauce. It had just the right amount of spice and overall it rivaled the yellow curry I love so much at King & I. Prices are fine, everything's just fine... but that's boring to me. I'll go back if for some reason my usual Thai places aren't an option, but that's probably it. They DO have a pretty extensive cocktail list and everything looked very good, but I try to behave myself during the week. Maybe next time and maybe they'll help liven things up! read more

I had the Pad Thai, it was excellently flavored and had the right amount of bean sprouts and green onion. My friend had the Tom Yum Soup, it was a delicious blend of sour and spicy flavors. So as far as the food goes we were very satisfied! Service was AWFUL since it took us 10 minutes to get water. The food came relatively fast within 5 minutes. We finished our food and waited for 30 WHOLE MINUTES before being able to finally get someone's attention to get our check. 4 stars for the food. Shave down 2 stars for the abysmal service. The Thai Gai Yang is one of several owned by the same owner in the Loop so if you get a similar feel for it all that is why. The interior hit me as the same as the Thai Pizza Company but there was a distinct smell that was not a nice one, although not real strong, might put some people off. I ordered the combination app (crab rangoon, fried tofu, two different roll types, veggie tempura - all very good), the house salad (very fresh and came so you could mix it and presented very well with the peanut sauce dressing on the side, good stuff) and a noodle dish that had tomato sauce, beef, onions, tomatoes, green onions .. pretty sweet taste but excellent. The food is definitely 4 star but that smell ... reminded me of a hotel I checked into once, got into the room and decided I couldn't stay and went across the street to a different one. This was just mild and not sure if it was from the cooking or something else but I would say, if you like good Thai food, go. If you don't like the smell, walk out but if it doesn't bother you, stay and enjoy. read more

So I love Thai food. My favorite items are spring rolls with shrimp or fish, coconut lemongrass soup, and drunken noodles. Thai Gai Yang managed to give me a meh experience for all three items. First of all, they have spring rolls, but theirs are either small and deep fried or giant. My bf ordered the giant one. It was ok at best. The presentation was kinda nifty (they cut it into slices like a sushi roll and cover it in sauce) but it wasn't mind blowingly tasty. Nothing surprising, not great. I ordered the coconut-lemongrass soup with veggies. The veggies and the soup were fine. However, they kept chunks of galangal in the broth and it's not very tasty to chew on. The slivers of lemongrass were a bit annoying but not too bad. As for the drunken noodles I ordered, they were ok. The rice noodles were very large and not as flavorful as I would've liked. They were a bit too thick too. I got the very spicy version of the dish. It was spicy enough but the spice wasn't as balanced as at other places. All in all, it was a meh experience. Ahhh what a good feel to write my first St. Louis review! I came here with other trainees during my training's limited lunch break to grab a quick bite. The food came right out of the kitchen as with any other Midwestern Thai joint that I know of. Average prices, large portions, nice quality/flavors...it was a positive experience in a pleasant location (Delmar Loop--or "West End" as Yelp declares). I'd recommend the Soft Noodle Roll as an appetizer. It's a yummy wrap of vermicelli noodles, lettuce, veggies and lots-o-basil leaves all swimming in a shallow pool of a sweet brown sauce. It's a good size to share with the entire table! The waitress was a bit scattered brained (hence the lack of 1 star). She forgot requests like separate checks and a dessert that was to-go. On the other hand, she was nice, arg. To be a bit more unintentionally scatterbrained like the waitress, I guess there are no lunch specials ($6.95 for appetizer and entree) as in Chicago, boo hoo. I seriously considered reporting this restaurant for food poisoning. I frequent many thai restaurants all over the west coast and here and this is among the WORST I've ever had. My absolutely last visit here consistent of chicken that was decent tasting but upon closer inspection revealed what looked to me gangrenous tainted chicken meat. Sick produce? Freezer burn? WTF? It was soo bad I thought I was gonna puke because I did take a few bites of it and was wondering why it tasted funny after swallowing that amount of food I ate. Please. The beauty of living steps from the Loop is easy access to lots of restaurants. My daughter and I craved noodles last night and decided to try Thai Gaiyang Cafe. It was around 6pm so there were a few dinner diners in the spot, but they were not crowded. I order the Tom Yum Soup with rice noodles and my daughter order the Pad Kooa Noodles. Mediocrity at it's finest! The service was just ok and the food was just ok. The spring rolls we ordered tasted like the packaged ones form the grocery store.
