RENTERS BEWARE - AVIS…read more This was one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. * We were stranded on the side of the road for over 5 hours in extreme heat with a 2-year-old child * Avis was clearly informed this was urgent and that we had a 3:20 pm flight * Despite repeated calls, we were: * Transferred endlessly between departments and countries * Ignored * Hung up on * After hours of calls, we were later told roadside assistance was only logged 30 minutes before pickup, despite our earlier requests * We finally got help only after contacting Amex Concierge * By the time help arrived, we had already missed our flight * Assistance would only take us to the airport, showing no concern for the reality of the situation * When I went to the Avis location to return the car seat and complete paperwork, I was met with hostility, raised voices, and accusations, and told the situation was somehow my fault No explanation. No accountability. No concern for safety. If you value reliability, especially when traveling with children or on a schedule, do yourself a favor and rent elsewhere.

After having another driver ram into my car while dropping off my son at school, my insurance…read morecompany suggested both Carstar Markham and Discount Car and Truck Rental on Laidlaw Blvd., for repair estimates and a rental car, respectively. I am glad I went with both. Once I had had my car towed to Carstar, the staff there arranged for Discount to come and pick me up even though their location was a one minute walk away on the same block. The person who picked me up was courteous, well dressed, and had already made all the arrangements for me ahead of time, including picking out a same-class car (a very new, tricked out Yukon), and having it ready for me to inspect. I ended up choosing another SUV (also new, Jeep Grand Cherokee) instead as it suits my needs better, plus it's cheaper on gas. I got a call the second day after I rented the car, and was asked if I was happy with the car, and whether or not I had questions. I appreciated this as follow-up is always great to see, although rare these days. Inspecting the Jeep properly was a bit tough as it had been raining all morning. There was a long scratch on one of the doors that I had not seen during inspection because of the raindrops on the car, but saw weeks later. This was initially a concern for me as I knew I had not caused it, but I did not recall it being included on the inspection sheet. That ended up not being a problem because when I went back to renew the rental about a month later, the staff at Discount compared the sheet with a previous rental inspection sheet and made sure to note that on my forms as well. This was without any prompting to correct by the way. It could have been easy enough for them to lay that responsibility on me, and they did not. My repair estimates took a while, and I kept the rental from Discount for just over 5 weeks. About a week of that being out of pocket for me, beyond what the insurance company would cover. I worked with my insurance company and Discount, who agreed to honor the same, much lower daily rate upon my renewal, making it easier for me to keep the same SUV for about a week longer. This saved me about $25 a day. When I had bought a replacement car and returned the rental, the transaction was equally smooth, with the staff there being professional, very well dressed, friendly and courteous. I also realized that on the day of the renewal, that I had returned the car much later in the day than the stated return time, which added a day's out-of-pocket cost to me. The manager noted that although it was an oversight on my part, he wanted to keep me happy and waived that day's charge. I highly recommend this Discount Car and Truck Rental location for anyone in Markham looking to rent a car, on a short or long term basis. It is so unfortunate and fortunate for me to visit Discount Car and Truck Rental…read more The reason I have to rent a car because my vehicle was in the shop after an accident and my insurance company deals with Discount and Enterprise car rental. Fortunate that the staffs here at this Discount location is really nice and efficient. Even as a walk in "I want a car right now, I am pissed" customer, I was treated nicely and I got my temporary rental car by the time I promised so I can get to where I need to go! They even come and pick me up from my house. I would recommend this location if your own vehicle is in one of the "hundreds" of autobody shops in the area and you need an alternatively rides! BTW, most of the rental cars here are Japanese model...or a Honda.

When I look at my credit card statement... they charged me $130!! I called numerous times to try and resolve the issue, and each time they said they needed to talk to someone else or look into the issue on their end. They tried to claim I kept the car for two days. I had time stamped footage of me putting the key in the dropbox an hour before my designated drop-off time. Absolutely shameful. They should not be allowed to be in business.

However the owner came onto the location and was very accommodating, he made sure to match my price rate with CAA and create an identical reservation. The second issue was that there were no cars at the location, we were at, the owner personally drove me to another location, on Main st east in a very nice jeep. When we arrived they had found that they still needed to clean the freshly returned car before it could be rented to me. As a show of compassion he immediately upgraded me to the very same jeep he drove me in, at the matches rate originally quoted to me by CAA and apologized for the hassle. All in all, the owner, Steve, could have simply turned me away and referred me to another franchise, but instead he took it upon himself to create a path for me to rent this car, a random customer. Thanks Steve. Thrifty, you guys rock!
