Top notch work, excellent service, super knowledgeable, and superb installation and mod work. If you are not happy, they are not happy and will work with you to make sure you are pleased. Myself I had a new head unit installed, speakers, amplifiers, processor controller, alarm, cameras, plus they purchase and replaced my heated seats buttons, and also I had the remote start feature added. I also had all my lights changed out and all my bulbs both inside and out changed to LED. All the above was done in stages. They even brought in a interior specialist to do my front dash, steering wheel, and my center console. If you want the job done to high standards bring it here. It all started when my truck got broken into. The thiefs did a number on my truck. dashboard broken, headunit missing, flipdown monitor missing, amps missing, and numerous other things. Insurance covered MOST of it. I chose Audio Design because Phil has outfitted 3 cars and a truck of mine before. I made the appt and dropped off my truck at 10:00. Knowing it'll take over a day, I showed up at 5:00 the next day to pick it up, but it wasn't done yet. The dvd changer was installed in the center console. (it was supposed to be behind the rear seat) and the ipod cable was in the glovebox,(it was supposed to be in the center console) and the dvd changer wasnt working. I was leaving on vacation the next morning so I had to leave. Second visit: They reloacted the dvd changer behind the rear seat and now that is was mounted to metal (grounded) it works just fine. The ipod is in the center console so I can reach it to change IPODs or plug in a memory stick. The final result is awesome. the stereo sounds great. The flipdown monitor and headphones are crystal clear. Not only am I happy, but my daughter loves the new system too. read more

Great job. I had a very bad audio system. Didn't know was wrong with it. Was just cruising along saw this shop and went in to inquire. Gave me a good price (a bit higher than I expected), and did the job right away (installed new door & rear speakers along with tweeters). While they were doing the job, I checked the reviews online and was worried about the bad reviews. But they, *Kyle*, assured me that they got rid of an old employee who caused some problems. Needed car audio system for our 2000 expedition in 2009. Audio design set us up with a alpine 900BT Bluetooth, navigation, iPod stereo. Great system. Last christmas we updated with the rear backup camera. Sweet no more blind spots in the rear. Friendly sales people, gave a lot Information & option. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. We got an estimate within a couple of minutes and got every question answered. The installation took about 4 hours and the installation has a lifetime warranty. The prices are reasonable and the paperwork was done extremely quickly. The audio system I got didn't have a cover/protector so they gave us one for free. When I came in looking for a basic car alarm system, Michael offered the Avital 3100L and advertised its dual shock sensors and started interrupt features. Michael takes pride in his work and I believe him. When I inspect the job (which took one hour longer than promised and caused me to be late to my lunch appointment, after leaving my car in the morning on Michael's suggestion - "why don't you leave your car now instead of coming back in the afternoon, it will be done by noon") I find the wires to the siren coming out the interior through a hole whose the seal is gaping half-open. So I come back after my (late) lunch, Michael's technician fixes the wiring and is very apologetic. I think, hey, I am a Software Engineer, I can understand, the job takes longer, your overlook something, it happens to the best of us. No bad feelings, Michael is great. And then the following unfolds... I find out the starter interrupt feature is not working. I inquire and Michael says "no problem, it just takes swapping two wires" but convinces me not to do it, because "I would be unable to start my car if I lose the remote." I come back a few weeks later and ask Michael to enable the starter interrupt anyway, and I get a new story - this time Michael says he needs to add a relay switch (extra part) to the alarm system to enable the starter interrupt feature and strongly recommended against doing it because the relay switch will go bad quickly and I will be stranded. I probe deeper and Michael tells me the relay switch will last anywhere from 5 to 15 years and will not be covered under any warranty. Then I remember what Michale told me a few weeks earlier, confirm the "swap two wires" story with his technician, and pull out the alarm manual to show Michael there is no need for an "extra relay," (the relay switch is built into the alarm system control box, and the whole thing comes with lifetime warranty) In the process, I also discover that the alarm (including the starter interrupt) can be disarmed without the remote via the hidden valet switch, so no need to worry about getting stranded with an "interrupted" starter if I lose my alarm remote. Michael never showed me or even mentioned the valet switch. I got the strong feeling that Michael was coming up with all kinds of dubious reasons to avoid taking on and completing his job. read more

Stoped by last week to get an estimate and make an appointment. Time is priceless. 10 am appointment this Tuesday. 10:30 still no service. Manager saves the situation. Turns out the job can be 3-4 times longer and obviously 3-4 times more expensive, which is right, people need to get paid for the work done. Result: waisted time and have to waist more looking for and arranging a new place of service. Tip: if you have to go there, talk and deal ONLY with the manager. read more

This place has been pretty amazing. Had ACS down the street install head unit, speakers last week. Horrible sound! Brought it here and they are fixing everything. What sets this place separate from most is they aren't looking at installing needless things. Sub? Last place just disconnecting existing one and said replace it. Audio Design made it work again, tested it and then said it works fine. Sounds better if you replace it, but overall not needed. PERFECT! Am I replacing it? Yes, but they tried to save me money which says a lot about a business. Trust me, it's a great place! A+ service, but most of all...aren't trying to rip you off for things and THEY DO THE WORK RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. I am not one for writing negative reviews, but this is one that I do not have a problem with writing. I wanted to go there and see if they had an iPhone/iPad connection for our vehicle, so I arrived about 3:30pm in the afternoon thinking there would be people to answer my questions, and see how much the unit would be to get. Well, again I said I was there about 3:30 in the afternoon, when I arrived to the store, they had plenty of parking, and the door was wide open to greet me here. I walked in and did a quick look around to find the items I was looking for, but what I found amazing, that I did not find anybody else in the store at the time I was there, not customers, but employees. They had a door open in the back of the store that looked like an office, but still nobody was there, the register was in the middle of the store but still again, no employees, so I decided to wait for a few minutes, so I did wait. It was about 3:50 when I decided to depart this location and try a different audio store, which I proceed to do. I do not know if I was to be the person looking for the employee but I know that was not my job and I was not going to look everywhere for them, but I did wait in the showroom to get my questions and merchandise purchase, but neither happened. My recommendations about this audio store, it to bring your own employee as you are not going to find one here. This was a waste of my time and travel, but I did not need to go far to find another audio store to help me. So that is why I am giving this audio store one star, well I cannot give it zero stars, so that is the only reason they did get the one star. read more

Not only did they not have much selection, but the best quote he could give me was $585. I don't think I have ever been ripped off so badly in my life. I was sooo excited to finally get the alpine touch screen and blue bird navigation system, i-pod connection, built-in bluetooth and Sirius satellite receiver that I had wanted to for so long. It was costing me almost $3000 but I reeeeaaaallly wanted it. Unfortunately it has been nothing but problems ever since. It all started with the installation that was only supposed to take 2 days but ended up taking 7 and I had to call them to get updates they didn't once return my call as promised! As if that wasn't bad enough, when I went to turn in the rental car, their credit card was declined and I had to spend almost $300 and was never reimbursed as promised. Right off the bat I had these problems: 1. The touch screen didn't stay on and it took me going back three times to convince them to do something about it. Another day in the shop and a week with a broken one to get a new one. No paperwork. 2. My backup sensor beepers no longer worked although Mike H. ensured me that they would after installation. To resolve that issue he offered to put a camera around my license plate that would be visible from the touch screen. Fine. Two more days in their shop and I had to pay another $60 for a rental car so I could get to and from work. When I got it back, the camera was placed above the license plate blocking the latch to open the back of my SUV. Great. Another day lost to have that fixed. No paperwork done. 3. I couldn't get clear reception from 105.3, my favorite station. After 3 trips they decided to remove the internal antenna from under the dash and stick a big long green external antenna on the inside of my windshield. I still don't get that station clear and can only hear through all the static sometimes. The only station I get without static is 106.5. No paperwork done. I dealt with these issues for a few months until the navigation started freezing up and not working. After a few phone calls and 2 drop-in visits they traded out my blue bird for another one. As usual no paper work was ever done. Also, after leaving my i-pod connected for 2 months, it burned up on the inside and I had to get a new one. Of course Audio Design told me I was negligent for leaving it attached. I was never told to unhook it everyday (cord is in the glove box). I am now on my 4th replacement, my Sirius satellite receiver doesn't work, every time I hit the brakes, roll down the window or turn on a blinker the whole sound system goes off. Sometimes it stays off for hours at a time and sometimes it comes right back on. Since I don't want my phone calls randomly cutting off I stopped using the bluetooth system. My volume does not go above 35 where before anything over 20 was considered ridiculously loud. Every time I go there they give me some lame excuse as why nothing works and basically tell me it's operator error. Last time I took my car into the dealer for service I was told that my old radio is crammed up under the console and everything underneath was a complete disaster. In my experience that have stood by nothing and do only the bare minimum to get by. Quantity without the quality. Unfortunately I was the one who lost. An expensive lesson learned! read more

I dont usually write reviews, but when I experience bad customer service, there's just no choice but to share, I came in here to have my stereo installed, price was a little to high for my wallet, so I asked if they carried the wires that I needed, and if i ended up not wanting to use them that I could return the wires. (That is considered a verbal contract, a verbal agreement that over sees any standards). Today I go in to return the untouched unused, BRAND NEW WIRES, maybe had dust on it. And the answer I got, "ALL the mom and pop shops around here don't take returns, all sales are FINAL. Hmmmm, last time I checked , mom and pop stores only succeed by word of mouth, and always provide great customer service, this was customer service. FAILED. and was taken for granted, for what? $65?? This business deserves -5 stars. Avoid at all costs!!!! Repeat: ****AVOID AT ALL COSTS**** Let me say first that Borna F's review is spot on for this car stereo business. I wish I had yelped before going because I regret ever stepping foot in this place. Customer service: Horrible. You can't get anyone's undivided attention for more than 5 min. at a time. Phil will make you feel like you are interrupting him from more important business. Don't expect to get a good price from this place. They charged me $299 for a head unit that is $250 even on the Alpine website. Installation: Horrible. I brought my car to a "certified" installer so that it would be done correctly. These guys charge $100/hr for installation, so you would expect to be getting top notch installation. Well, I was wrong. 1) Amplifier "mounted" to car by using wood screws into a thin piece of wood shoved under carpet. The wood screws were not even long enough to fully bite into the wood, and so they are really just hanging onto the carpet. Whats wrong with using the included machine screws and mounting it to the chassis panel as stated in the instructions? If I wanted it done half ass I would have taken it to best buy. 2) Tweeters taped to inside door. Oh boy. 3) Eyelet mount cut so it could be slipped into battery terminal instead of removing nut (would have taken 1 more min to remove the nut and slip it on) 4) Window tint scraped and peeled back from trying to fit speakers into door panel. ...and those are just easy observations. I can't wait to pull my center console and see what there is to fix behind there. Maybe I should feel lucky that the stereo even turns on. I got a total of 5 min. from Phil when I went to pick up the car....and that was just long enough for me to pay them. They didn't go over the installation with me, talk about how to use the new head unit, link up the bluetooth...nothing. I even took the time to go back the next day and inquire about how bad the installation turned out, partly because they didn't return all of my originally installed equipment (but told me it was all there and he was sure he saw it in my car). I asked Phil about the amplifiers, and his reply was "That's how we do things here." Well if that's how they do things for $100/hr, then take my advice and take your business elsewhere. They even called me so that they could "add Velcro" to fix the amplifier from moving around. MOUNT IT TO THE CHASSIS! I'll be adding this review to any other website I can find as well to let everyone know what to expect from this business. read more

If there is an option for zero stars, I would have done so. Got some very expensive HID kit from these guys and they turn out to be defective. When asked for a replacement, they were not being helpful and said that I would have to go through the manufacturer, and so I did. However, the manufacturer has told me otherwise, and that the re-seller should be responsible to handle warranty claims. So basically I have spent over $150 to get the "best" HID system for some defective merchandise, and they will not warranty them out even if you have a receipt. I will stay away from these guys, bad customer service, unprofessional and dishonest. read more

After a very difficult time with an installer in Morgan Hill, who went out of business with no notice, the importer of a backup system recommended Audio Design. Diligent work from his technician determined that the mirror was defective. Refusing to buy rhe $3000, $2000, or $1500 system they offered, I asked them to replace the original mirror on the truck and leave everything until a replacement mirror could be obtained from the importer. This resulted in a damaged original mirror, vibrated all the time, and, as I discovered today, the retraction of the wiring harness out of the headliner and placement under the floor mat. I went to a closer shop who will now charge me extra labor time to restore the wiring harness. What should have been a simple plug - and - play is now a multi - hour job. read more

Brought my 1968 Olds 442 to Audio Design to give her an upgrade. And what an upgrade it was! When I talked to Mike I told him I wanted clean sound but loud enough so I can still hear music when I hit the gas pedal (the flowmaster exhaust can get pretty loud). Mike knew exactly what I was talking about. Not only is he very knowledgeable about audio, he is also knows a lot about cars so he knew exactly what I was talking about and what I needed. He knew what was wrong with my current set up and why I was losing so much of the sound. I just had my third car in for an installation at Audio Design. I previously had state of the art Nav audio systems installed in both my 01 Porsche Boxter and my 02 Mercedes CLK430. The installation was done in a very professional and clean manor. I am pretty picky about my cars and both turned out fantastic. The newer systems look great in my older model cars and have brought them both up to a modern and usable audio / navigation level. My third car is a Mercedes SL500 and I had an iPod interface cable installed today and again, done in a quick, professional and clean manor. I did research on the type of equipment I wanted to buy and have installed before working with Audio Design and it is my belief that I got a better price than I could via an internet deal. read more

I just came from Audio Design where Mike and his team upgraded my Alpine stereo in my Rolls Royce Silver Seraph. Outstanding job. Mike was communicative and knowledgeable as was the rest of his employees through out the installation. My seats were slip covered, and the surrounding tulip wood around the new unit was carefully handled so that it would not be damaged which requires a very patient and professional hand as this wood is notoriously brittle with time. Mike even went the extra mile to reinforce this wood which is certainly nothing he had to do. I feel this act summarizes the conscientious service to be had at this establishment. Superior experience throughout. Looking at the comments here on yelp regarding Mike not being attentive or appropriately responsive to customers, I personally witnessed walk-in clients being accommodated and advised in spite of numerous phone calls and scheduled appointments being coordinated. Incredible top notch service quality and knowledge along with extraordinary customer support too, I went yesterday Dec 1 as soon as they opened to get my system troubleshooted, was so much more complicated than expected and needed lots of work done with rewiring of sound and power, the route originally decided ended up not being working so well. Which was keep same amp rewired with a new sub amp, turns out speaker amp was fried which then at no cost they continued to labor over what I was originally charged and estimated to install a 5 ch amp instead. Literally stayed about 5 hours at no extra charge and beyond grateful with Audio Design! I will indeed continue coming! I highly recommend it. They are really cool and chill, also explain to you every situation and options available to decide together with you the consumer. read more

Mike and his team were excellent from start to finish. I visited Mike on a Monday and looked at options, he was straight forward, honest and was objective about his recommendations. I didn't feel like I was being sold. Thought about it and then Wednesday called first thing when they opened. They were able to take me in that morning and completed the install in a day. New top end Kenwood deck and front and rear speakers. When I came to pick it up the installer and Mike both sat down with me and tuned the deck, made sure the blue tooth connected and went through settings to fine tune the sound. I couldn't be happier. This shop attempted to rip me off for $1,048. Be sure to read this before paying for ANYTHING in advance from Sound Design. I am a home audio equipment dealer by trade - 16+ years in the business, and a former manager of a furniture store. I understand retail, reasonable customer treatment, and responsible handling of a customer's money. and I speak with that credibility. After consulting with one of the owners named Mike, I returned to this store to purchase a particular Alpine head unit with GPS. I was told it was not in stock, and that Alpine was doing inventory so it would take around 10 days or so - about a week longer than normal. I decided to order it, and paid for it completely at that time. I was given a receipt showing my payment for $1048, neither marked that the goods were received, nor that they were not. I asked the saleman if it needed to say on the receipt that the unit was backordered, and I was assured by the salesman that the paperwork was sufficient. I had a witness with me at the time. During the wait, I came down with a particularly bad flu that was going around that turned into pnemonia and required extended anti-biotic treatment. I live in Santa Cruz, about 35 miles away from the store over a long mountain pass, so it's a bit of a drive, especially when very ill. When I started feeling better again, about 5 weeks later, I contacted the store. The same salseman insisted I had already picked up the unit at the time I paid for it. How could I when it was out-of-stock? This was ludicrous and an absolute falsehood. They could have also confirmed it matched the time Alpine could not fill orders. He also insisted that I signed the receipt as to having received it - but there was nothing I signed anywhere on the receipt saying I had received the merchandise. I looked the receipt over several times to verify this. I insisted on speaking with the Mike the owner again, the one I orignally consulted with. Him and I had spoken on the phone just before I paid for it, with his assertion at the time that Alpine orders were being held up (after he was told over the phone by the salesman that none were in stock). Mike now insisted that the salesman told him he was 100% sure - not 90%, not 99% - but 100% sure that I picked it up when I paid for it, and that he believes his employee. Complete utter bunk, and an incredibly shocking assertion, to say the least! Again, I had a witness with me knowing I paid for an item to be ordered, but not yet received. Mike did take about 10 days or so looking over their inventory records. I had to keep after him rather than the other way around as it should have been. One time I called and he said I might be right, but he still kept me waiting on all this. I informed him if it didn't correspond with inventory proving I did not receive the goods, then someone in his shop - probably the salesman I paid - is likely taking opportunities such as this to steal goods. Fortunately, my credit card company backed me up in disputing the charges. Eventually, Mike agreed to the refund, though the he never said if found or admitted a mistake was made. They expected me to drive all the way from Santa Cruz to credit back my credit card - about 70 miles round-trip, when they should know well that refunds can be processed without the customer being there in person. I finally got them to give me the credit over the phone after I asked my dispute agent to call them and tell them it was OK. I did eventually get my refund, but I had to pay $17 in interest accrued during the delay. Absolutely terrible, and FRIGHTENING experience with Sound Design! read more

My car stereo stopped working yesterday. I figured, since it was black Friday - today was the day to go get a new stereo/speakers. All the stores I went to were over-priced, unprofessional, and carried fairly cheap products. Over priced even on sale. I went to Audio Design on my way home, hoping to find something, and spoke with Phil, the manager. He helped me find the perfect stereo and speaker set within my budget, which was a fairly small one at that. Everything was installed within an hour, they did a great job and the sound quality is excellent. He even sat in my car with me to make sure everything was functioning properly and sounded great. I couldn't have asked for more professional, helpful, quick service, even when most stores don't take me seriously at all (younger guy with tons of piercings...) About a week ago I decided to install a new radio and speakers in my car, and do all the work myself (this is the first time I've done anything like that). Phil was very helpful, and after plugging my ipod into around 20 different speakers, he helped me pick out a radio and speakers I liked. The prices were good, he gave me all the little electrical connectors I needed to install the sound system, and he even explained how to do it - works perfectly now. Product/Installation: I had my Iphone/bluetooth connection installed to my existing car audio system of my Infiniti G35 about two weeks ago. I have to say, the installation was flawless. The audio quality and bluetooth setup is excellent. I think it is as good as it get. Until now, I still could not find any problem with it. Services: I have to admit, I was a bit shacky when Phil asked me to pay up front for the total parts/labor for the work and order parts. Especially, I read the bad reviews from this place. Anyhow, I too a risk and it turn better then I expected. Although, Phil should let customers pay for the parts first and labor later after inspection. That would ease my tension. At least the installation was almost on time as promised. Only, took about 30 minutes longer, but the job was good. Price: I paid $520 for everything. I think the price for this work is one of the lowest out there after searching around. Although, Phil did first quote me for $600, but I knew that "All Pro Audio" down the street would do the same job for about $480. I was going down to "All Pro Audio", but Phil won my bussines by matching the price and save me a trip. Conclusion: I think the products and installation is excellent and deserve 5 stars. This price is one of the lowest, but not a lot lower than other places. I would recommend installing iphone connection and bluetooth service here. read more

I had to get my stereo replaced and I had a budget a low budget. I found the radio I liked and he quoted me higher then what I had so I told him look i only have ____.. and he said okay what will will do is cut the cost of the labor so you can get it for the price you want. The replacement was fast and speedy and they had my car done in no time. Now if we stopped there I would be giving them 5 Stars. But when I got home I started to notice something...the interior lights stopped working. So I checked my fuse and found out there was no power to that fuse and it looks like they tried a short cut to get the radio done faster. Im not going to say there horrible but there work is questionable. I will probably be back and I am just hoping my next visit will go better. read more

These guys are awesome. My Mercedes S430 COMAND system broke and I was quoted at least 1500 to repair it. I was able to work with Marcus at Audio Design to spec-out a brand new sound system that way surpasses the functionality of the Mercedes unit for a very very good price. They did a custom suede bezel to fit a double-din Alpine DVD/Nav/Ipod/Bluetooth high-end head unit. They put in two amplifiers more powerful than the Mecedes COMAND system, rewired all speakers, AND included a 500w amp with two 12" subs. I was worried about replacing something so custom in my Mercedes but I was very happy with the results. Just want to say these guys know what they are doing!! read more

Awful place. Was never able to get my remote start to work correctly. They said they needed the car for a week, and the upgraded battery they sold me is bad. Brought my car to a local installer (referred from my best friend), and he was able to complete the work in a little over half a day and CORRECTLY. I remember he asked my buddy "did he do the alarm install himself?" My buddy responded "no, a shop in San Jose did it." The installer said, "well whoever did it deserves to be shot! The wiring is awful, there are SCREWS holding your wires in place!" Also my memory seats and powered mirrors do not work. Looks like the harnesses were never plugged in. Also they released my car to me with the check engine light on, telling me not to worry it will be fixed it's because we used remote start with the defective module. Found out the module they were using is the wrong one and does not integrate properly with the cars current proximity door sensors. I blame the installers for the install, however the manager Mike is a great guy. I don't blame him for the crappy install, just whoever did my installation. Their probably good for basic alarm installation and stereo, but looks like their technicians don't know what the hell their doing. read more

Bad experience! I ordered and paid $1,044 for an Alpine head unit which was out-of-stock. I was told Alpine had some inventory related shipping delays and to expect it would take about 10 days. It was a very decent price - IF they would have given me what I paid for! I live 70 miles round-trip from this dealer. I had come down with walking pneumonia during the wait period, which had me mostly in bed rest for about a month. When it came time I wanted to pick up the unit they insisted I had already received it the day I paid for it! The salesman said told the owner he was 100% certain I did that. NO WAY! He also claimed I signed that I received it, which I didn't. I had a witness with me as well. I've managed retail stores before, and no customer should ever have to go through this. After a substantial amount of back and forth, the owner said he'd look over his records and should know in a few days if his inventory indicated. It took credit card company oversight (under buyer's protection), numerous calls to three different people there, and a full two weeks after notification to finally receive my refund. However, I had to pay credit card interest on a month and half of the $1044 balance. They also tried to make me drive the 70 mile round-trip to run the refund, which was totally unnecessary. They eventually did it without the trip, which I had to fight for. Be extremely careful and I recommend do not pay in advance for goods they can not deliver at the time you pay. read more

TL;DR: outstanding service! Mike reached out to me after the previous review. Mike calmly reengaged with me to resolve the situation to my satisfaction. This included re-positioning all alarm modules neatly and securely, building a custom harness to provide clean wiring, providing a wiring diagram of all work done, providing an improved grounding system, and taking the time, before and after the installation to make sure that we were all on the same page. As I said at the beginning, this installation was difficult and there was clearly some miscommunication about how I use my vehicle; I still feel that I was initially articulate about what I was looking for in an installation and how my needs were technically different from a stereo used in an urban environment. However, once that was cleared up, Mike and team really doubled down on the service aspect to get me an installation that is professional grade and field repairable. The fortitude to take responsibility for my satisfaction with the installation speaks volumes about this organization, and really restored my confidence that they are the best choice. read more

I asked for an aux input and iPhone connection for my Tahoe and was told the installation would take a hour. I returned to collect the vehicle and during the demonstration I was given it was clear that the system didn't work as intended. I couldn't use my XM radio and the system, or I could but lose a bunch of functionality via the iPhone. I was told that an extra cable was needed to support the phone as they didn't establish the XM impact when they started the installation. I was told that part would be in before the end of the week, when I would get a call. Two weeks later I hadn't heard anything so drove by to see what the deal was. I was told that the part was ordered, but they hadn't gotten anything back yet. They would chase and call me back when it was in. Another two weeks pass so I return again. They tell me they'll call and chase the company they ordered from the following morning and call me straight back afterward. STILL NO PHONE CALL. That was a week ago, I'm going to ask for them to uninstall the worthless options they gave me and give me my money back. read more

After having a back-up sensor go bad after just one year, he was kind enough to pick up my car from Porsche and install new sensors and return my car to Porsche all within less than 24 hours.
