They have great gear but service here is snobby at best. Came in looking for a turntable lid part which they don't carry. Ok no biggie. Then I ask about maybe upgrading my phono preamp that I purchased here earlier, but I'm told actually my amp sucks, and how they "don't know what analog sound is." Then got a condescending explanation of how watts are like horsepower to sound ya da ya da ya da from this guy who's not a car mechanic. Left feeling talked down to and insulted. Just because a store has a set of $150k Wilsons in the room is no reason to treat people like crap. read more

I've been a music fan my entire life. In high school I'd spend most of my dishwashing paychecks from Red Lobster on albums from Oarfolkjokeopus on Lyndale. I had the pleasure to listen to AP's systems, and in particular, one of my all-time favorite songs, propelled by Belcanto, and it sounded like I'd never heard it before. I just had a great experience buying my first high-quality audio system. I worked with Eric, who was incredible. He knew every spec and price and answered every question I had. I felt ZERO pressure to buy anything and was allowed to try out combinations of amplifiers, cd players, and speakers for 3 hours before settling on my perfect combination. I was expecting to pay a slight premium for service like this, but after I compared prices I found that Audio Perfection was CHEAPER than Amazon for the components I bought. This place was amazing. I found them through looking for places that sell Grado headphones, and they have a room where you can sit and test each set to compare quality. You can bring in your own vinyl and CDs to test on some of the different sound system setups they have as well. The people working were all very knowledgable and happy answer questions. Hello, just thought I drop a comment regarding my great purchase from Audio Perfection. I am a mail order customer and contacted Eric about a Esoteric DV-50s. He advised that he had an in-store unit that was in mint condition. Having demoed a DV-50 elsewhere, I opted to purchase the DV-50s from Audio Perfection without the opportunity to demo it. I can only say that one can rely on Audo Perfection's representations - this universal CD player had no blemishes; the remote control and CD controls work superbly, and the sound of the player is unbeatable. I recommend Perfection Audio to anyone considering a hi-end audiophile purchase. read more

You know, this place is impressive enough to visit once. All the $20K+ stereo equipment literally lying around on the floor is...interesting. You really haven't lived until you've seen a $15,000 retail price Audio Research preamp being used as a doorstop. But once you get past the entrance to this old school house between the wooden crates lining the landing like it was a storage room, and up the old stair, you arrive in the main showroom with its worn and dirty carpet, and the water stained ceilings. It really is quite extraordinary that there is so much multi-ten thousand dollar stereo equipment laying about under ceilings that look like they have been wet, and wet often. And all these old classrooms are lined with very reflective plaster that could fall off the wall at any moment. That must be why they make sure the systems, though very capable, are inexplicably tuned down so that they seldom exhibit much audible bass. So back out the door of showroom #1 past the incredible Atma-Sphere amplifiers that I think are the same units they had in the store 5 years ago and into showroom #2. This is where the 'mid priced' equipment is. The speakers here will probably not cost you more than $10K. And here we see a little IPOD unit in an IPOD docking system feeding into either an Audio Research Amp/Preamp combination, or a pair of what could have been Esoteric Audio amps (I didn't look closely, sorry, I was too horrified). So I put my disc into the Wadia CD player while the salesguy apologized for the music in the other room (not realizing that I had placed MY CD in to the CD tray because his 50s audio recordings were not showing me what the system could do). He soon realized that I had my own music with me and his insulting of my music would do no good. Quite frankly, the system sounded better with my music (while his little IPOD sounded like a very cheap receiver's radio played through my bedside clock radio..maybe it would have been better if he had encoded the music at something other than 48kbits like it sounded as if he had done). So after playing my music and being equally unimpressed with the sound of these multi-tenthousand dollar systems over my much cheaper system (Rotel Amps, Klipsch speakers and a computer with a decent sound card and audio saved to hard drive with either 320Kbits or encoded in FLAC). YES, GO. See all the incredible equipment (especially that stuff in the small front room that is about 10 years old and is probably the stuff they were never able to sell). Then go to some other place where they like music as well as they like stereo equipment (is there really such a place in Minneapolis?). read more
