This is typical of most well established stores in major cities (eg: NYC) as they know their stuff. I think the standard domestic pressings are way overpriced though. My other gripe is I was in on Record Store Day and they had lots of fresh new material but they were playing some terrible 80's music (B-side of a really whiny singer) that made me want to run out of the store. Their movies are also pretty rare and they mainly tailor their book selection for a certain demographic. This place is also not for everyone, but it's definitely worth some people checking out.

They also still hold on to hundreds of VHS titles, often because they're rare movies that are difficult or impossible to get on DVD. The price of new releases and old releases are basically the same ($5), which makes this place fairly expensive for renting old movies. They only accept cash and still don't use a computer system. However, the staff are very knowledgeable and can usually be counted on to find a movie for you in the store if you're having trouble. My only big criticism is the staff can border on pretentious from time to time. I've often found when I ask them for suggestions and I explicitly outline the type of movie I'm looking for, they tend to recommend movies they think I "should" like and not what I'm actually asking for.

No, it's not that I can't count. It's the fact that The Record Centre has two locations. It's weird. I saw two Canada Post offices across from each other downtown. We have a similar situation here. This Yelp listing is for The Record Centre. Its address is 1099 Wellington Street West. We crossed the street at some stage during our walking tour and discovered The Record Centre Too at 1112 Wellington Street West. There is no listing to the latter because Yelp moderators rejected my friend's listing for the smaller store (ugh!), so you're getting both reviews here. We went into The Record Centre Too first. It's the smaller store out of the two. The name is cute. I couldn't tell you why there are two locations with the same owners. The smaller store had records, CDs, cassettes, and 8-track tapes. I love these media types. Sadly, the selection was slim. I frankly didn't enjoy the smaller store because it was tiny and packed with music enthusiasts. Perhaps if there weren't so many people, I would have enjoyed browsing. This smaller store had a top floor that was for employees only. It was an interesting setup, almost as if half the store was for storage, and it was decided to open the lower floor for music merchandise. The larger store across the street had more records and selection. You will not find CDs, cassettes, or 8-track tapes here, though. You need to cross the street. Imagine if you are looking for a specific media format and you visit the larger store. You ask for help and are told to go to the smaller store across the street, which won't guarantee that you'll find what you're looking for. From a customer perspective, it's not the most convenient and pleasant setup. It is mainly why I lost my enthusiasm looking at new and used music at both locations. It is rare for me to feel this way. I didn't experience a relaxing space for me to browse albums at either location. It's huge for me, as I am the type who can spend hours at a music store. Instead, I wanted to leave both stores as quickly as possible. You can also get record players and other accessories, such as a record adapter for 45 RPM records, at the larger store. I wouldn't know if you can at the smaller store. I'd say no because it was too tiny. I had a better experience at Vertigo Records. One store. Everything in it. Lots of happy album browsing. Cute name, eh? Anyway, on a recent outing with a friend of mine, we visited both stores. Since the smaller "The Record Centre Too" store didn't have a listing on Yelp, I created one. They are physically different stores on opposite sides of the street. However, the Yelp Moderators merged it with this listing. So some of my posted pictures are of the smaller store. I have indicated so in the photo captions. Both "The Record Store" and "The Record Store Too" are owned by the same folks. I will review both here. The main store is much bigger. It has a good selection of records as well as record players. They have a lot of brand new still sealed records too. No CDs, cassettes or 8 track tapes. If you're looking for these, you need to go to their smaller location. The smaller location has records as well, but less selection. The smaller location has a lot of space that is reserved for employees only. It's like a storage area. The space that's open to the public is very small so it gets very crowded if there's more than 3 customers in the store. It's much more enjoyable to browse at the main location. Street parking only.

It looked like they were having some sort of boardgame playing event with kids when we were there. They had tables set up and an employee was explaining the rules of some game. We browsed quickly, but from what we saw they had a good selection of board games. I saw Dix-it, Ticket to Ride, various versions of Fluxx, various versions of Munchkin and other cool games. Prices were comparable to other game stores. In addition to board games, they also had videogames, including older stuff like original Nintendo and Gameboy! They had some figurines and also lots of different types of dice. Since staff seemed to be busy with the event, we were left to our own devices to browse, which I prefer anyway. They did thank us for coming in when we left though and they seemed friendly. It's a cool store for games if you're in Kanata North. It's in a strip mall with lots of parking.

Because I enjoyed my first experience I returned yesterday hoping to try out ring slings as I had noticed they have a great selection of carriers on my last visit. They offer music from every genre and strive to sell hard to find music rather than mainstream CDs you could find anywhere in the city. Prices of LPs are generally $4-$6 and CDs range from $4-$11. If you're looking to sell, they claim to be one of the highest buyers of used CDs, records and movies. Turning Point also has a huge selection of DVDs and some VHS all categorized by genre. Their prices are reasonable with DVDs costing about $10 and VHS costing $2. You can sometimes find a rare film here, but their selection is mainly what you'd find in HMV.

What can I say about GameZetera other than the fact I still don't think I pronounce their name…read morecorrectly when I say it... I've gone there a handful of times, done a couple trade-ins and bought a few things. Simply put, they have a really nice selection of retro games, that's for sure. No matter what game you are looking for chances are they have it in stock. The only down side is their prices rival what you find on eBay so don't expect to be able to acquire a large number of cheap games for your own collection here. Personally, I think they would move a lot more product if they dropped the prices of retro games by about 20%. But I don't really think that's what they want to do as it seems the owners treat the place like their own personal retro game collection where they're more interested in having and holding all these games rather than selling them. It also seems that they are gradually moving move away from retro games and into trading card, sports memorabilia and card games like Magic and Pokemon. Most games start at about $20 for all the retro systems (NES, SNES, N64..etc.) and go up quickly from there. It's not uncommon to see a title you can pick up on eBay for a flat $20 with shipping being sold at GameZetera for $30 + 13% tax. There are only a few titles for less but usually it's because the cartridge is trashed with a ripped label or permanent marker scribbled on it. Either that or it's a widely unpopular title that no one wants or has even heard of. Beyond retro games and consoles they also have trading cards, some sports memorabilia, various geeky knickknacks like wallets, hats and backpacks. They also have some random game guides/books, a few older PC games and other random game related items. Sadly, it's clear though that they don't take any pride in their inventory. While they did TRY to organize the titles at some point often when going in you'll find 'B' titles scattered in with the 'R' titles and so on. They've also got several giant bins of mis-mashed stuff just tossed in. There's game cases, games, cables, toys..etc. All totally unorganized and caked with dirt. Speaking of dirt - I'm convinced they don't clean the games that come in beyond a token blowing in the cartridge. Every cartridge game I have bought there I've have to clean myself at home with alcohol and Q-Tips before it would even work as the pins are dark and caked with grime. As well, when you get a receipt from them all games are listed simply as "game" with an arbitrary price beside it. No inventory number, description or anything. Honestly it's 1 step above a hand scribbled note saying "you buyed stuffz for $22.60 - come again". They're fairly responsive on Facebook though there's been times it's taken them a couple days to answer a simple question about their stock. Really, it would be nice if they had a live inventory of their games on their website - maybe even allowed online orders that you could pickup. But you can tell they just don't care enough to do this. But when you're the only "game" in town for a place that's dedicated to retro video games I suppose you can get away with that sort of thing. Bottom line, It's worth just popping in if you're in the area as just looking at everything they have is an experience in of itself. A trip down memory lane as it were to which there is no admission fee. If you're looking for something specific, chances are they will have it but expect to pay top dollar for it.
