Native Delawarean, long time lurker, first time poster. I've been living in California for almost 40 years and came back home to see my mom in New Castle. During a Sunday drive on route 9, came upon Augustine Tavern. SO. INCREDIBLY.PERFECT. First: historic vibe without pretension. It's not oh-so-Annapolis touristy waterfront. It's more "been here since 1814 and still serving a good drink to travelers and locals." Food is varied and delicious. I prefer briney oysters, so their freshwaters were not my favorite, but the French Onion soup was rich and thick with cheese and bread. Their martinis were icy top shelf, and their happy hour was fabulous prices. I almost hesitate to advertise how good this place is. I don't want you to go because I like my seat at the bar. Came here with the family and the food was so good the service was great and the drinks were the best the salted caramel White Russian was so just the right amount of sweet. The southern fried chicken came with mashed potatoes and spinach with a honey chipotle glaze that was a little too sweet for me but it was an amazing experience and will come back again read more

I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Especially since this was a destination that I had been waiting to visit. So alas, I decided to go on the Love holiday. Well, we were greeted with a busy evening and an overwhelmed kitchen service. We were sat, and noticed there was an extremely loud group dining behind us. So, we were moved a little further away. After getting settled we order drinks and an appetizer. We were told then that dinner service was going to be about an hour late. We were ok with that. After having about 2 rounds of drinks and our appetizer. We noticed time elapsed much longer than an hour. We told our waiter to just box everything to go. When the meal was brought out, the restaurant manager accompanied our to-go bag. She was very complimentary and apologetic that the service was not to their standards. She comped our full meal and gave us a gift card to return. I will go back for sure. Just not on a celebratory holiday. read more

We went on a Monday night. The server was great! He gave great recommendations and kept us satisfied the whole time. The bar tender can surely mix a good drink. The seafood was excellent. I had lunch there yesterday, the food, the waiter and the atmosphere were all great. Plus, if you like Delaware history the walls are full of historic photos of that area's incredible past and the drive along Rt 9 through the marshes and wildlife sanctuaries all added to the experience. read more

Service was poor: botched dishes, flawed presentations, overbearing waitstaff, and utterly flavorless food. How is it possible to eat a ribeye steak sandwich, not knowing you're eating beef? It had no flavor. None! That's it for me. I had fish and chips on my last visit. It was absolutely the worst I've ever eaten. Soggy and flavorless. Since Augustine's has now reopened, we have had the opportunity to dine there twice. Both dinners were truly delicious, and we were fortunate to have the same terrific waiter Sam! This is definitely a place you don't want to miss! The restaurant is tastefully decorated and has a charm all its own. It is a little bit out of the way, but worth the drive. When you visit this establishment, you may notice its remote location. However, don't let that deter you, as it presents a great view of the Delaware River. Furthermore, it's menu features a good variety of flavorful entrees, and casual options as well. The serving staff is attentive to your needs, and the interior has plenty of seating. While the menu selections is terrific, the preparation process can use a bit more polishing. The risotto side dish that we've ordered came out luke warm. Also, the steak came out very under cooked. Credit to the management to address these deficiencies immediately after we brought it up to the staff. May want to visit early during the weekend as it does get busy during peak read more

My visit started at the bar and waited so long for my reservation we left before dinner. Overbooked is a good thing for restaurant but not for patrons. Drinks were in warm glasses and bar is loud. Never got a chance to eat dinner I watch the frazzled hostess give away my table. read more

very mixed review! First, the good - we ordered striped bass and it was outstanding, highly recommended! The bad - we ordered the daily special described as "fresh caught blackened sea bass"; got frozen breaded white fish (my guess is cod), no blackening, was supposed to be served over lobster risotto but it was the same risotto as the other plate with a bit of lobster sauce squirted on it. Additionally, had reservations, but had to ask the hostess for a server after waiting over 10 minutes at our table.... once server came, she was wonderful. Roll of the dice if you go! read more

This place is now called Augustine Tavern, formally the Augustine Inn. If they create a new profile under that name I will leave this review there to. Had dinner there last night if you want to call it that. This place is a total disaster, avoid at all cost. Had an 8:15 reservation arrived on time was told we would have to wait until 8:45 to be seated. Didn't get seated until 9pm. Ordered drinks took 20 minutes. We gave out entire order when the drinks arrived. 45 minutes later appetizer arrives, salad was forgot that had to go back and get it. Ordered an another round of drinks these one came out undrinkable. Two sips and we didn't touch them. Ordered the porterhouse medium my wife ordered steak frites well done. My powerhouse came out well done and her steak frites came out medium rare. Porterhouse was tough, dry and bland. Risottto was cold, mashed potatoes was cold. All we ate was the salad and soup while the bill was $250 with tip. I have no problem paying if the food is good, but this place was slop didn't even take the leftovers to give to my dogs. Service was subpar and non existent. Will not be going back and will tell everyone as well to avoid this place read more

Came here for dinner with my friend the other night. It was charcuterie board night! So we chose two cheeses (cheddar and chipotle havarti yum), prosciutto and toasted crostinis. The cheese and prosciutto was delicious. For entrees I got steak frites and my friend got the Chilean Sea bass. The steak was alittle overcooked but tasted good. The parmesan fries that came with it was plentiful and complemented the steak really well :) My friend loved her sea bass as well. Service was great and attentive and we loved the old house vibes of the restaurant inn. Food is alittle pricey but I think it's worth it for the quality of food. Def. Would love to come back and try other items! They have great selection of meats and seafood :) I would love to take other friends and family here for a good dinner! read more

Food was pretty good! Service was definitely lacking in communication from hosts to service staff. We made a reservation at 7 and a server greeted our table by 7:15 after we made a busser aware we had not been greeted yet, so it made us feel rushed throughout the rest of our meal, as we had plans for a movie that night. I will say that the Steak Frites was some of the most tender cooked steak I've had in awhile, we were definitely impressed with the quality of food and the portions were great size for the price. I think just overall when the service is lacking and we feel rushed it definitely hinders the experience. We understand things happen, so maybe we will try again. read more

The excellent and much missed Augustine Inn is now the "would be/could be" Augustine Tavern. The new owners have at least one other highly regarded restaurant, so we had high hopes. Dashed. Physically the changes are mixed. Gone are the charming local photos in the hall and the tavern-type booths in the main dining room. Net result: less charm & more noise. The event room is now open. Result: More local & very welcome options & . . .more noise. (Why don't they close the doors to the event room?). Food is a also mixed bag: some very good (but expensive) choices; some reasonably priced choices that are promising and almost but not quite. Burgers are excellent. A honey fried chicken on mashed with spinach is delicious, but don't choke on the stems left on the spinach! New owners have continued the famed "buck-a-shuck" oysters, but two-buck Chuck doesn't know how to shuck. Ask for a knife and do it yourself. Saving grace: mostly great service. I hope the new owners make a commitment to excellence, which still seems to be "under consideration." read more

The first 2 items ordered Scallops and Salmon - not available. And these are main stays on their menu...and no green beans. You are a seafood restaurant in the middle of the seafood season ‍ This visit makes me sad...we have been coming since it first opened and have promoted the food and service. 3 couples went out to eat. We all had a " Clipp coupon" we read the fine print and no where did it say one per table!( the new Clipp coupons now say one per table. The waiter did not know any details so he asked his manager. He came back and told us One coupon per table. We ask for the manager and a bleach blonde came out and argued that it was one coupon per table. We all disagreed. One couple wanted to get up and leave while others said that we could sit at 3 different tables. We did just that. The bleached blonde told us she was an owner and that sealed the deal for us. We are not ever going back. If that's good business , I'd get a new partner. She also said if we were going to leave a bad review she would refund the cost of our coupon.Really?? Table a asnt ready so we sat at the bar ordered and paid for oysters. Only for an hour later they told us they where not available. Ordered food came out cold. Crab bisque totally unique! Service on the slow side but the meals once served were delicious cocktails tasty

Wife and I had dinner the other night. We had reservations, so we were seated promptly. Ordered the appetizer sampler and the French onion soup. Sampler was great, shrimp was really big. French onion soup flavor was good, but soup was only warm. I ordered the 12oz prime rib and my wife got the eggplant Parm with gnocchi. Ordered the prime rib medium, but only came out barely rare. The potatoes were good, as were the green beans. My wife loved her eggplant dish. It took a while to flag down out waitress, and she took my steak back to get fully cooked. It came back with fresh potatoes and veggies. Was cooked properly, but the quality of the cut was a little lacking. Very fatty and grisly. All in all, for the most part, the food was good, but not HOT. My concerns were addressed fairly quickly. We'll be heading back again, maybe on a slower day/night. Have to think that some of the issues were just timing issues. read more

Waitress was great but ordered the cowboy ribeye that was 18oz they brought a 12 and never sd we dont have the 18oz. No bread no chianti no woodford left after 1st one was delivered - dessert wasnt the same anymore they said. So dissapointrd because it was just different than all the other times we ate there! My daughter-in-law and I ate here tonight since I had a gift card that was given to me for my Birthday. The restaurant was fairly busy as it is Sunday. Our waitress, Lindsy, was nice and answered my questions about certain dishes on the menu. We got the Prime Rib Eggrolls for appetizers because they were out of wings. I wasn't impressed by them, they were ok. I decided on the Local Striped Bass and my daughter-in-law got the Faroe Island Salmon. They both came with the parmesan risotto and asparagus, which was delicious. We enjoyed our Entree's. For dessert I got the Honey Ricotta Cheesecake, which I did not like because it wasn't sweet or a regular slice of cheesecake but rather a mud pie shaped flat and strange looking cheesecake. My daughter-in-law switched half of her Stout Chocolate Cake with Ice Cream for half of that cheesecake making me happy because that tasted like dessert should. Went this weekend to check out all the great reviews I've been getting from neighbors and let me tell you, they were right!! I had a reservation for 7:30, and I wasn't seated until 7:50. During the entire wait the hostess made sure we were updated on timing, their problem is no one wants to leave, so people stay after finishing their meal just chatting and listening to the great band. Not their fault. The food: everything from the pretzel to the lobster bisque to my steak were cooked perfectly. Delicious. My wife's risotto side was absolutely perfect. The service: they couldn't have been more accomplished and friendly. Always checking on us, everything came on time, and they were supper busy.
