I like Augustiner beer and on my last day here in Germany, I had to get some beer. It was raining and we sat inside. It was late for lunch and early for dinner. Employees were taking breaks when we walked in. They have English menu for food but only in German for their drink. Traditional Barbarian food is served and they were pretty good. Service was very fast and no issues of paying by credit card. (Per reviews posted on Yelp, I was prepared to pay in cash). Perhaps visiting them during non peak hours helped. read more

It was amazing!I had several meals while in Germany. But by far this was the BEST and I don't normally say that. This place makes me want to make an award just so I can give it to them. I can very much get behind the beer here. Mine was non-alcoholic and very good. My cousin had no complaints about his. Although authentic, the food was very expensive. We both had roast pork and potato dumplings. I have never been a fan of Bavarian dumplings so I cannot speak to the quality specifically, although potato seemed better than flour ones in general. The pork was outstanding: sliced thick into copious potion sizes, a small ring of fat encircling each piece, smothered in rich gravy. Close to perfect. However, the red cabbage was too sweet and not seasoned enough, very bland. The atmosphere and location were wonderful for a Summer afternoon. Lots of different types of people were there, including Germans, a testament to the establishment's best qualities. Or maybe just the good beer. The service was OK. The beer was very good. The food however was a fail. The dick was dry. The cabbage served with it was too sweet and the ball-like object was unidentifiable. Potato? Bread dumpling? We just don't know. The Wiener schnitzel was "meh", the potato salad was good. This has also been the most expensive meal we've had so far. When arriving in Munich our taxi cab driver and the hotel concierge recommended to not go to HB since it was very touristy. Instead they said that most locals prefer Augustiner. There are a number of places nearby, we elected to go to one that was less crowded near Marienplatz. There is also another location just a block away but it was definitely busier. We got the traditional roasted pork with potato dumplings and a side of the cabbage salad. My wife make the mistake of getting sauerkraut instead of the cabbage salad. Apparently that's a no no. To wash it down we ordered a pretzel on the side with a 0.5L of the dark beer which pairs well with the dish. Overall the food was great and reasonably priced. read more

Ok, I gave Augustiner another try. The bier's okay -- nothing special. Munich has so many other bier halls but I wanted to give this one a try. We visited Friday evening and the place was absolutely packed. We were lucky to find a couple empty chairs at a community table and chatted with the others for a while. We didn't try their food so no comments about food here. The service was pretty attentive. The bier was okay (there's much better bier in Munich). The hall was way, way too hot to stay for long so we had our bier and left. Nope, we won't be going back here. Too many other better places to drink in Munich. read more

Service is "German style" (not too welcoming and quite pissed if you want to pay by card but quite quick and efficient). Conveniently located next to the Frauenkirche and home to elderly scam artists..... So I am sitting and an old fellow, looking quite respectable, sits across from me, which is normal. I order and he's speaking German to me which I politely convey that I don't understand. His lunch arrives (coincidentally the same thing I ordered, so I'm sure you know where the story is going) he eats up and leaves. After quite some time I ask the waitress about my lunch whereby she let's out a string of what I assume are curses and explains in English that this guy told the server we are together and he left without paying for his lunch or his drinks. At which point my lunch is replaced and it is delicious - schweinebraten with a dumpling thing. And pfannenkuchen suppe which is beef consommé with strips of crepe instead of noodles. So, for excellent beer, great food and a free side of entertainment, I give Augustiner 5 stars! read more

I really like the tables on the first floor. It's not as busy and crowded as the ones on ground floor. The food is good (all the Bavarian dishes one would expect here). Most of the time I go with the classics like the roast of pork or dumplings. Never got disappointed. Not the best Bayerische food that I've ever eaten but not the worst. It's just kind of there. Generally, the service here is quite good. However, I've also received some of the worst service that I've ever had anywhere in the world here too. Just something to be aware of. The first thing I saw coming around the corner of the street to get to this place was row after row of patrons seating outside under tentpole-propped sheets. Big deal, you can see that 12 times on one street in Munich - but the folks here were far more animated than other similar establishments which could be taken in two ways: either this was really "touristy" and the patrons were exaggerating themselves and their oh-so-wacky spirits for the locals or... no, that had to be it. So if you can get past the out-of-towners potentially making you and your eating partners cringe with their displays of buffoonery, you're in luck! As you make your way to the inside, you'll pass a few servers hurriedly rushing to and fro with plates of succulent sausages and towering beers. It's a reassuring sign, to be sure, and when you make your way inside... it's kind of quiet. Down the stairs is where the bathrooms are and up the other flight of stairs is additional seating. We turned the corner and were in a dining room with a large bar sitting smack in the center of it. The bartender greeted us and, in perfect English (yay!), told us we could sit anywhere inside or out. Even though we were totally the epitome of tourists, we opted to not go sit where we had just come from and tried the patio out back. Here has to be where the locals come: there's some laughter and conversation, sure, but by and large, you are looking at men and women here to eat, drink and smoke. In fact, smoking is a huge deal here as you may need reconnaissance goggles to see through the haze and make sure you sit at your communal seat without bumping into anyone or anything. We turned back in and grabbed a table near the bar. A waiter was over shortly and ran us out some local beers the nearby monks specialize in crafting. These are fine but would never pass for a religious experience, if you know what I mean. While we sipped our drinks, a couple other "regulars" stopped in and grabbed seats inside near the back wall opposite where we were. The inside was definitely more low-key than the front patio, so if you're looking for shenanigans, the inside and back patio are not for you. We enjoyed the calming atmosphere and our waiter was excellent at keeping our beers full and our plates rotated. The char was delicious, the combo plate of pork, a veal meatball and smoked sausage was a terrific value and the "Best Duck" actually deserved that moniker as I had to keep from embarrassing myself while shoveling it into my mouth. Oddly enough, the veal meatball was kind of a chore to get through for one of us, but everything else we had, plus a schnitzel plate, was polished off with ease. But being that we were overseas and wanted to try as much food as we possibly could without suffering from cardiac arrest, we placed an order for a dessert tray. What arrived was a selection of sweets ranging from strudels to plum-filled treats and an ice cream-like dish no one else wanted that I gladly devoured. However, when the tab arrived, we were charged for two dessert trays because the server thought one would not be enough and brought us out some super, deluxe, caloric-overload option. I get what he was going for, and definite props for looking out for customer satisfaction. But it would have been nice to know that before we sampled the goods, you know? Barring that hiccup, this is a fine destination for those who call Munich home and for those visiting who want to do all good things tourist-like. Stick to the inside and the back if you want a relatively calming meal. Or stick to the front if you want to go crazy. You can do both here without needing to go to another place. read more

What is wrong with this place? We saw that there was a crowd and expected that it'd be a great place for some German food and bier. Instead we were greeted at the door by a lady blocking out entry who just said "Yes?" in this condescending way. "Ein Tisch für zwei bitte" in my best German I could muster as a goofy American who loves German language and culture. She shook her head in disdain and said "it's very crowded, just try the patio." Die Bedienung war unfreundlich, irgendwie "Rüde" und vergaß sogar fast das Bezahlen, nach 3 mal "winken"... Das Spezi war auch eher klein. Es war sehr laut und die Bedienung hinter dem Biertresen schmetterte als die Teller mit hoher Lautstärke auf den Tresen. This place has some of the most delicious food and beer we have ever had. The service was quick and friendly and they spoke english! We had the Jaeger Schnitzil and the Nuremburgwursts and both were absolutely perfect! Their house brew is some of the best we tasted while in Germany! I was not expecting much from such a touristy place...so Augustiner performed to expectations. The service was terrible...they forgot to put in the order for 2 of the 5 people in our group. I have to admit it is nice to sit outside looking over to the Frauenkirche and the Goulash I ordered was good, but the samplings I had from the rest of the groups dishes were not good. We thought they were joking when they brought out the tiny plate of kaiserschmann for dessert (especially for the price)...the people next to us received a huge plate! We were quickly informed that they were dining at the restaurant next door...haha. Think I will sit next door on my next visit to the area... read more

The location is perfect during a tour in the city. As usual the service is rude but the food is good ( traditional German).
