It was a fun experience. I had spent the day wandering around Munich alone and happened to wander in here for a quick snack. A few things: - You seat yourself, no one seats you (I was confused and had to ask a couple of people). Got some curious looks from other patrons, probably because I wandered in and was completely lost and couldn't really speak much German. - Knowing just a little bit of German probably would help with the ordering process. I tried ordering something (Leberkase) but totally messed up the pronunciation, my server replied with a blank stare, turned around and turned back and handed me a menu. I wound up ordering the Weisswurst. (Another note: You're not supposed to eat the casing when eating Weisswurst, something I found out *after* I had left the restaurant. Ah well.) - The soft pretzels on the table are for eating. I did not know this and didn't eat them. I wikipedia'ed everything after and was like, Oooooh..... Not too bad overall. read more

This brewery/restaurant/Biergarten is the oldest in Munich, and walking in is like stepping back in time. We walked one mile from our hotel and were seated right away. It was 7 pm. By 7:30 the dining room was almost full. The menu comes in many languages. We enjoyed our meal. Pretzels come to the table and they are Not complementary. The beer is good. We did have to tell the waiter that we were ready to leave in order to pay with a credit card. Suggested is a ten percent tip to add before the card is swiped. Just got back from eating at this establishment, where our waiter was rude, huffing, walked off in the middle of taking our order, wife and I had our food prior to taking our kids orders, the kids food came out about the time she and I finished. When the bill came the waiter wanted a tip and I refused. I paid, he took my card and slapped it to the counter. I picked it up and started my walk to the door when the waiter came running through the restaurant to hustle money for the pretzels we took from a pretzel basket he left on the table. He charged me for 5 when we only took 4 at that! Hand written ticket. This place should be avoided because there is great German food to be had in many other places! Pretty sweet atmosphere... Very inconspicuous from the outside, but spacious and old-timey on the inside. The food was well priced and you get GIANT portions for the money that you spend. If you go there I suggest not eating for a few days before so you can finish everything on your plate ;). read more

Let's start with the positive: the roof terrace is really nice and provides places in the shade and in the sun. During lunch with a party of three each of us got our meal separately even though two of us had ordered the exact same thing. If we hadn't insisted on the one getting his meal first to start without us it would have been stone cold. The quality of the food was sub par. I had the Gebratene Putenbruststreifen vom Grill mit großen Salatteller in Honig-Balsamicodressing und Baguette. And I've had much better in Die Deutsche Eiche The waiters are devoid of any sense of humour, though that may be a cultural thing. This was my first meal in Germany. My friends and I were in search of some authentic German food. We asked our hostel employees for rev one day ions and they told us to check this out. It was delicious and only about a 10 minute walk from Euro Youth Hotel/ Wombat Hostel. I could tell the moment that I walked in that the place was legit. Their clientele appeared to be primarily Germans. There was a noticeable lack of tourists in the restaurant for dinner. I came with two other friends. We each had a beer (of course), and I ordered the Bavaria as my main dish. Imagine a German take on the classic chicken parmesan, except with grilled potatoes instead of noodles. It was delicious, but definitely a little heavy. I didn't end up finishing since it was so much food. The atmosphere of the restaurant was nice. Germans drink more beer than water, so I'm pretty sure half the restaurant was drunk. Our waitress looked at me funny when I told her I didn't want a second beer haha. Definitely come here if you're in search of authentic cuisine. Everything from the food to the atmosphere is on point. read more

My friend and I came here during off-peak season and locals seemed to frequent here during the weekends. The vibe, atmosphere and local feels were all here but service was lacking. We understood that the server might not speak perfect English but our server could be nicer in explaining or showing she tried to help us. There's the typical menu in German and English, and a special menu of the day that's only in German. My friend went for the pork, gravy and dumpling but she didn't like it. This is a traditional German Beer Hall and as such be prepared for it to be noisy. However, don't let that deter you from visiting. The food is excellent (make sure to eat at least on pretzel). In the States we usually wait for a server to seat us, but in Germany you either take a table on your own, or flag down a server and tell him/her your party size. If you are in Munich, this is an excellent place to have an authentic German dinner or lunch. read more

This is arguably a more affordable beer hall in Munich where it is also family-friendly and we found that to be very true! Quick and welcoming service, reasonably priced, good bier selections, good food and you sit comfortably here! PS: It is a norm for people to make reservations at restaurants. I lived in Munich for 5 years and this is my go to place for authentic Bavarian. Any time people were visiting, I would try to take them here. The best beer in Munich. And the food is incredible if you like this sort of thing. Try: Zwiebelrostbraten (from the German menu), it goes perfect with a weissbier! When you arrive, just let a waitress know how many are in your group and they will find a place for you. You will sit with strangers. Sometimes you leave as strangers and sometimes you leave as friends. For me, this is a don't miss. Your mileage (kilometerage) may vary. read more

This was our first meal in Germany and we were a bit nervous or unsure what to get and how the customs worked here. When we walked in they didn't really have a host waiting at the front (very common in Germany we learned) but someone came and helped us. The place was booked solid for the night but he said if we could eat in an hour then he could squeeze us in. We took him up on the offer and I'm glad we did! The waiter was not rude but definitely wasn't there to field questions or give suggestions. Basically just wanted to know what we wanted and go get it which I actually liked. FUN ORIGINAL BEER HALL right near Oktoberfest. Our taxi driver from the airport into the city was raving about how amazing the Augustiner Edelstoff beer was - we had to go straight to the source to fully appreciate it! We sat at a communal table with a big group of Germans, making this an even more fun feeling. This has a great community feeling to it and plenty of opportunities to meet the locals and other fellow travelers. Amazing decorations - they have a bar built into an old copper still, as well as lots of hops hanging above the tables. This place was busy (not in a negative way) - great hum of conversation and people enjoying the beers. All the beers were great - the food equally as good. Be prepared for lots of meats!! We had the brats as well as the full meat sampler - pork knuckle and all! Great pretzels!!! Soft with a crispy center. For the memories we purchased souvenir half liter steins for both ourselves and friends. Definitely worth stopping by for some great local beer and Bavarian (m)eats. read more

An authentic find in München! After a long morning of traveling in this foreign city, I finally arrived at my hostel. Desperate for some food, I asked the front desk for some recommendations. They recommended I go to Augustiner Bräustruben. It was such an authentic beerhall with the servers dressed in typical German costume. They had menus in different languages (thank god). I ordered the knuckle and it was good. There were some locals next to me and they were so sweet. They didn't speak English so they tried to show me how to eat it. They were so funny! The beer was brewed in Munich and it was the BEST BEER I EVER HAD. Only in Germany can I get away with having a pint of beer during broad daylight. It was such a great time, I returned the next day for dinner. The place was packed! read more

When in Munich you have to visit the original brauhaus! Luckily, our hotel is only a 20 min walk away. We sat at the end of a long table, next to people we don't know but that's okay! It's all in the experience. We got our beers quickly and the food came out very quick also! Keep in mind that the servers won't bring your check unless you ask for it, they are more hands off here than in the US. ***there is a 3 euro charge for paying with a credit card!** You can also buy Augustiner mugs and glasses from your server as well. read more

My favorite brewery amongst the breweries I visited while in Munich. Sadly, it was the last one of the night for me and very near to closing time so I couldn't indulge too much, yet I still loved it. The best ambiance (minus Hoffbrau House) of them all. Dark wood, rustic, cast iron, the place is super authentic, yet well designed. Also, the space we were in wasn't huge, which after hitting up some of these other legendary Munich breweries, you leave feeling like you left a Disney World attraction of beer houses. This one is a bit more low-key yet compared to the rest of them, the most busy. (Again, we were here at closing on a Monday night). The beer. By this part of the night I was 6 liters deep into beer and could barely drink or eat anything. I sipped on my beer and thought to myself damn, this is good, way better than some of the other beers I've had. The food? We didn't mess with any of the entrees however we did order up some dessert. The apple donut fritters/whatever they were, were off the charts! Fresh apples fried, sugared, cinnamoned and were the perfect treat on a cool night with some fresh beer. I seriously can't speak more highly of these apple treats, as in it may have been one of the best things I ate while on vacation. I want to say they were doughnut like, but there was no dough involved. We also tried the spaetzle type dessert which I wasn't a fan of, but those apples? Get 'em. From what I hear, this spot reigns king when it comes to brewery food, so I'd make sure if you visit this is the place to order some grub. First off - don't get this place confused with the Augustiner Keller (the bier garten) which is close by.... definitely a different feel - and this may not be what you are hoping for if you have that in mind. This place has all of the wonders of its more famous and popular cousin (The Hofbrauhaus) without having the unfortunate dual role of being a tourist attraction. Awesome beer and food - i just ordered off of their German menu having no clue of what i was getting and it turned out to be one of the best meals of my trip - unfortunately i cant recall what it was (pork shoulder was part of it, but that's all i recall). The seating is the traditional beer hall style (picnic tables), so be prepared to be social with your table - (small tip: the language barrier is easier broken down after a few of the giant steins - apparently "drunk" is a universal language). The service was kind of horrendous, but somehow added to the experience. Having an old German frau literally roll her eyes at me when i told her I wanted to pay with a card really brought me back a few decades and make me feel i had picked a local's place. read more

My favourite beer house of my Munich trip! The atmosphere is a little intimidating at first because it's all boisterous and festive and if you're new to German beer houses, a tad bewildering at first. A really nice waiter came along and sat me and my partner down at one of the tables and got us beer. When he realized we didn't speak German he got us an English menu and made lots of great recommendations on the beer to order (Get the dunkel, so awesome! Also love that they have pints because I cannot finish a litrebeer on my own!) Our table had an older German man and another group of German executives, and I love how friendly they were, making attempts at conversation and generally just bonding over good beer. I think my pig whistles! This place is as authentic as it gets! I was raised in the north of Germany and I still felt like a tourist because this place is full of leather pants, pretzels and beer - great! A traditional folk band is heating up the atmosphere while you are crunching on your halbes händel (half chicken). A great beer hall that's not too crowded/touristy, unlike the Hofbrauhaus. We came here early so it wasn't that full, and we all ordered a half liter of beer, which is super cheap for the quality and amount you're getting! They have a variety of traditional Bavarian food, but I actually opted for the half-chicken plate (was tired of eating schnitzel) and it was very well-seasoned and tasty! This beer hall was definitely one of my favorite places I visited while in Munich. Their beers are my new love and the food is pretty decent as well. We went on a Wednesday night and it was pretty crowded. The waiter sat us down next to a group of locals who were super drunk and friendly. They did not know how to speak English and this one guy kept asking if we spoke German in German. It was pretty hilarious and made for a fun night. FYI, there are a basket of pretzels on each table. They are not free. The waiter told us while we were ordering food - good thing or my boyfriend might have ate all of them. In town in Mid December, 2019 for Christmas Markets. Stayed at the Hilton Garden inn and walked past this on our way back to the hotel. Stopped in for a beer and ended up having dinner. It is a local gem. The beer was Great and the commual tables allowed us to meet some new friends. Service was good, the spatzel wonderful and had a great time.
