When you have the will power, you can do anytime. Without the phone battery, I was able to recall the approximate location and walked and walked and asked the young lady walking by for directions. Like a good old way. Thanks for your help and also suggestion "Don't drink too much beer!". It is definitely a tourist stop over but glad I did it and you should too. If you are coming from the side entrance, walk thru one of the double door with yellow sign. Also street sign above. Go down the huge stairs and you can hear and smell the fun. Make a left and at the end is where you pay for the beer, grab the stein, rinse and get it filled. All done within 30 feet radius. You can retrace back and grab all the meats and such. Cash only! Outdoor area is huge. Tree leaves started to come out Mid April. Interior beer halls with plenty of seats. 100's people drinking pints and pints of beer. Men's room, designed to take care of all this. Beer was ok, food was ok, experience was ok. Did meet one of the workers offered to take photos. Nicer one at it! This was one of my favorite experiences in Austria. SO SO SO COOL. Traditional beer hall, its huge, grab your own table. Inside its like a mini mall food court there are 10-12 different stands where you can choose cheese or sausage or pretzels. Service is quick but confusing to figure out, you will get it down fast. A traditional Austrian beer hall. We got there around 5:30 and the tables were filling up. It looked like such a great time there were food stands all through the hallways with different types of food. Everything from popcorn, pretzels, sausages, ribs, chicken, and of course, Augustiner beer we were so excited until we realized it was cash only and we only had a few euros on us. We went back the next day with plenty of Euros for lunch, only to find out that the beer hall doesn't open until 3. We were able to eat lunch in a full-service restaurant on the premise, which was very nice and since we had euros, they only took credit cards. Thinking the third time's a charm, we went back at 6. It was a Friday night and I guess that's where everyone from Salzburg goes after work. It was packed, the food booths had long lines and there were no empty seats at any of the tables. We never got to really experience the traditional beer hall. Suggestion for the future...bring cash, go on a weekday and go early to get the full experience. read more

Augustiner is one of my favorite German beers, so I was excited to see they had a brewery in Salzburg. As described in other reviews, it is a unique experience to grab a 0.5 liter or 1 liter ceramic stein off the shelf, give it a rinse at the rinse station, go to the cashier and pay for which kind of beer, and then have it filled. As far as the fill, I was disappointed as my 1 liter stein was only 3/4 full of beer, and the rest was foam. The draft beer was limited to the lager and the bock. There are 3 large rooms with lots of communal seating. I did notice a lot of tables had Reserved signs on them, so it appears there are lots of regulars! There is also a large outdoor beer garden, but the tabletops had been removed for the season. There are several food stands with almost something for everyone. We had eaten at the Christmas markets, but got a "Greek salad" from one of the stands consisting of cucumbers, olives, peppers, and feta cheeses coated in a Greek style dressing. read more

Great experience of a beer hall which does not cater to tourists. As an Auslander, you need to grab the appropriate size stein, rinse, pay at the kiosk (cash only) and give the small receipt to be filled. Repeat as needed. The food is like a food cart pod. I felt very much at home once I figured it out. They will bus tables and you may meet folks at neighboring tables, especially if you are toasting. Wow! This is a beer garden! Huge and obviously a local favorite. Be prepared to walk and get your own beer and food however, as this is more like a cafeteria setting. We enjoyed the experience of choosing a mug, rinsing it and having it filled at the tap, and there were plenty of food options available to take outside on a tray. Feel free to ask to share a table if none are available; some locals asked and it worked out great as they recommended food options inside that were amazing. The crispy pork was the favorite; thick crunch outside and melt in your mouth inside from all the rendered pork fat. I can't imagine anything tasting better than this. This was such a highlight in our Austria trip! A must visit in Salzburg!! Make sure you bring CASH and a hungry belly! You pay for the size and you simply get beer. No choices other than large or small. I was silly enough to think a small 0.5L would be enough, so you may as well get straight to the full 1L. Food options in the halls are APLENTY. My biggest regret in Austria is not allocating my stomach space to take in all the options at Augustiner. Sitting outside is soo lovely in the summertime shade but the reserved tables were tricky (we sat at one 2h before the party had reserved it and they came 1.5h early), so we had to relocate. Be prepared to make some beer loving friends! Side note: hours were inaccurate online so we ended up waiting on the steps but it got so hot that we got some supermarket beers to drink by the river beforehand. read more

This is like a food court with each stand offering unique dishes. So, you get a tray and order from the stand of your choice. You may need to go to several stands. Then there is the beer pour: indescribable, but I'll try: there are two size been steins to select from, you water rinse the stein at a communal fountain, pay the cashier, and (finally) take your stein to the man who taps your beer. Finally, you take your tray to one of 3 or 4 great halls and find a seat at long wooden tables. It's an experience, but really hectic, chaotic, and loud. A Bavarian gem!!! It was a wonderful walk from central Salzburg and worth every step. It gets 5 stars for atmosphere and 5 stars for food. This is the largest biergarten in Austria. The beer has been brewed for over 400 years by monks (since 1621) and is absolutely delicious. Note: it is stronger! Come prepared to make new friends as you join any available space at random tables. Pay for your stein, pick up your stein, and your stein will be filled for you. There is a 'food court' available with a wide variety of meats, salads, breads, and pastries. You are allowed to bring your own food into the garden but not your own drinks. Allow 3-4 hours for this adventure. Making friends, repeated 'prosts' and enjoying the atmosphere is not something you will want to rush. I went full predictable and had the chicken schnitzel with amazing potato salad. Because it is about 30C every day with 600% humidity, I got three drinks - a delightful blackcurrant juice which I cut with sparkling water, and because I was working just a 0,5L beer (because how could I not?!). You get a mug and clean it and fill up your beer there's only 2 sizes. The people aren't like the nicest if you're a tourist and don't know what to do. Plus, a unique way to get your beer.... Grab a mug from the wall.... pay the ticket person... then they fill your mug directly from the barrel fresh out of the brewery!!! Impossible to get any fresher than this!! And it is EXCELLENT!! There are food 'vendor' areas along one hallway where you can get a selection of meats, sausages, cheeses, and snacks. They are all very good and reasonably priced. They have large outdoor beer garden on the lower level. Parking is paid in a private lot on the property but not too expensive. One of the best places to drink beer on earth! This is the real Augustiner Bräu - Kloster Mülln (unrelated to Augustiner-Bräu in Munich, which is not as impressive). There are usually only one or two different beers on wooden cask and you pay for a token and then go through a turnstyle to fill a clean stein you grab from a shelf opposite the filling area. For food, there are several food vendor stalls that serve up traditional Austrian food. There's pork knuckle, sausages, etc. Everything we had was excellent. The ambiance is spectacular too. The beer hall is a massive room with stained glass, beautiful columns, and dark wooden decor. It feels like a temple unto beer. In short, you cannot miss this when visiting Salzburg. read more

This place was amazing. There was indoor and outdoor self seating. It was massive. The food was amazing. There were several different food kiosks, where you could order, grilled fish, roasted chickens, sausages, schweinhaxe, cold cuts, schnitzel, burgers, any side you could imagine. The dessert choices were just a plentiful. The beer and drinks were just as varied and fun. You simply pay for the size if stein that you prefer, rinse it in cold water to cool it down and they fill it with your choice. Bring cash. We went to several beer gardens (even the Hofbrau Haus in Munich), but this was our favorite. We went there twice. read more

What can be said about the Augustiner Bräu in Salzburg that hasn't already been written. This is Austria's largest beer hall and possibly outside in warmer weather is Austria's largest beer garden. It is a must visit in Salzburg and is indeed within walking distance from the Old Town and the Mirabell Palace areas. Now despite the fact that Austria is a huge beer drinking country as well as huge wine drinking land, beer halls are not part of our culture as they are in southern Germany except during Oktoberfest celebrations. I say this because this is not a place I would ever go to often - even if I lived in Salzburg. But the beer here is good - very good - and the food offerings are varied and at an extremely fair price. I recently enjoyed eating the classic Bosna (Salzburg's famous Wurst) as well as a high quality Chili-Leberkäs ... and for good measure a portion of Bierradi with spicy Austrian Kren. Everything went fine with my beer and for me the legendary Augustiner Bräu served its purpose well. read more

Everyone goes to Augustiner - locals and visitors. When in Salzburg, you must go. Sit outside under the trees when the weather is good and sit inside in when it's not. The beer hall itself is massive. Just huge. I think there are six different large rooms, each seating hundreds of people. All having fun. In addition to the great beer, food is plentiful with multiple "shops" inside and outside to purchase sausages, pretzels, salads, sandwiches, roasted meats and desserts. I stopped here when I first arrived in Tromso and what an excellent choice. The beer was good (however I recommended they provide a few Scandinavian options on tap) . This place is NOT to be missed in Salzburg! A very lively and friendly place, and the beer is great. Tip the beer pourer, and he gives you more with less foam. We couldn't find a table initially on a busy Thursday evening, but a couple locals invited us over and we chatted with them. My husband Dean went to do food recon, and came back with some terrific meats, and later we had dessert. There is no table service, but the atmosphere is so casual and relaxing, and very inviting. The beer was very drinkable, and we just had to go back for a second liter (yes, liter). read more

Definitely a cool experience, and the beer and food are solid! There are a couple large dining rooms inside in addition to the huge outdoor biergarten, but it still gets busy enough that you're almost certainly going to have to share a table with some strangers. Luckily, that's culturally acceptable, even encouraged. If it looks like seats are empty at a partially-filled table, just gesture and ask "Ist das frei?" and hopefully you will get a "Ja, bitte" with a gesture to join. For beer, find the open line, pay the cashier for either a half liter or a full liter, take the receipt, grab a mug from the wall, rinse it under the spigot, then hand it and the receipt to the beer guy, and he'll hook you up with some delicious local beer. Food is food-hall style: pay with cash at one of the 8-ish different individually-run food providers in the hallway. I'm a big fan of the pig knuckle (Schweins-Stelze) from Pavlovic, which is a gigantic ham hock taken off the bone for you and piled onto a plate with potatoes. Probably enough to feed three, and definitely enough for two. Make sure you ask for mustard up front if you want it; if you don't ask for it they won't give it to you, and it's about a dollar so if you ask after you've been rung up they'll have to ring you up again (which will annoy everyone behind you). If you get something rich too eat, stop by the tiny Atanassoff stall for some shredded radish, which is a great way to cut the rich food, and is also supposed to be good for your digestion. We've eaten here both times we've been in Salzburg, and if we go back in the future it will absolutely make the list for a third visit. read more

Pretty sweet place! I've heard about this cool Biergarten from so many people and I'm glad we got to check it out on our quick day trip from Munich. I would suggest getting there early because the place fills up! They don't open until 3pm, but you want to make sure you get a seat outside under the cool trees. They have tons of seating inside, but part of the experience is to be outside drinking with some pretty comical Austrians (and a ton of American tourists!). It's first come, first serve for seating. The process is cool because you walk to a wall of steins in different sizes and pick your own, wash it, walk downstairs and outside and pay for the beer. Only bad thing is that the beer is not my favorite. I'm a total PNW beer snob, German and Austrian beer is just not my thing. But I got one for the experience. We were lucky and snagged a spot in the shade and were pretty hungry. I wish I had gone upstairs and back inside for more food options! But outside they have 2 little kiosks of food.
