Beautiful Austrian ambiance, right down the the lederhosen. Beautifully prepared traditional dishes and pairing suggestions for beers that best complement your chosen meal.

Great place to eat/drink/sightsee in Salzburg. My family and I started at the rooftop bar of the restaurant, grabbed a few great beers and sat overlooking a breathtaking view of Salzburg. Then when we got hungry, we went downstairs to the restaurant to grab some food. We shared the schnitzel and another dish and they were both very delicious. The star of the show was dessert, the kasierschmarrn was one of the best we have ever had (and we've had a lot)!! Overall a very great place to visit if you are in Salzburg, with great views, great service, and great food!!

Just a few steps away from the funicular entrance for Hohensalzburg Fortress. This historic restaurant is huge and wonderfully, authentically Austrian! We had lunch here after a visit to the fortress. I had to start out with a flight, which consisted of three 7-ounce pours. The beers were smooth with mild flavor, typical for most any German beer, which, IMO, are highly drinkable, but lack complexity and depth of flavor. For food, I had the Krustenbrat (roast pork). The pork was not entirely fresh and quite dry, thankful for the gravy. Dumpling was marginal and coleslaw was average. My wife had the pulled pork burger and she really enjoyed it. We did share a warm apple strudel for dessert and it was awesome! Overall, I love the building and its history, beer is typical German beer (refreshing, but forgettable) and food quality was average on this visit. That said, I would not hesitate to visit here again and try another dish.

I came to this place because it was close to the fortress and boy was it good. Food - The pancake soup is absolutely amazing, and the beef goulash was delicious. Service - Good The view here is absolutely amazing, especially at dusk. Overall, this place is unparalleled beyond words.

    The salad was awesome!

We had a good lunch here while visiting Salzburg for the day. It's worth the trek to take in the views but the food was also good and the staff was friendly and the restaurant was charming. We each had the large salad and it was excellent-- super fresh and tasty. I didn't think the pancake soup was that great. The broth was good... the pancakes were a little mushy and cut into sort of too small pieces for my liking. The cheese dumpling soup was much-loved by my spouse. The dumpling variety plate with kraut wasn't bad. The kraut was great... we didn't love the dumplings though. However, they were well prepared, just not our favorite thing on the trip. We would certainly consider visiting again if ever back in Salzburg. The waiter was super kind. He even took my spouse - who was taking pictures of everything - into a room not currently being used for lunch service so she could see and photograph the beautiful ceiling and chandelier.

A beer on the upper terrace. Not bad...

My family and friends will tell you, blindfold me in a new town and I'll find my way to a brewery. In Salzburg, that was Stiegl-Keller. What a great location! On the edge of the old town (Altstadt) and at the base of the castle, good food and a good beer list was definitely found. It's all of their own beers, mind you, but all were solid. Tip: With multiple terraces on the upper floors, having a Stiegl beer and enjoying the views over Salzburg is as good as it gets while traveling.

They make you work for your beer, here! The brewery is at the top of a rather steep hill, kind of on your way up to Hohensalzburg. It's a climb for sure, but definitely worth the effort. Oh yeah - you get to the top of the hill, find the entrance to the brewery...and then have to climb a couple of flights to get to the restaurant itself. We stood at the host stand with a few other parties for several minutes before someone finally came out to help everyone. We weren't there for food, just for beer, so when it was our turn, he directed us to the self-serve bar area near the back. They have a small sitting area separate from the dining rooms, and a large outdoor patio, which I'm sure is breathtaking in the right weather. (When we visited, it was breathtaking in the "it's so cold, my nose hairs are freezing" kind of way). There was only one other group in the bar area when we arrived, so we hopped up to one of the open tables and opened their menu to make some hard decisions. For my first round, I decided to go with a Stiegl-Hausbier Christkindl; my husband went with a Stiegl-Spezial. He went up to the bar to get our drinks while I held our spot at the table. He was gone for a while, and I was confused as to why - I saw one woman step up to the bar ahead of him, and knew she'd come in alone, so I wasn't sure what the hold-up was. Turns out she'd ordered a pint of beer, and had the nerve to give it back to the bartender because there was "too much of a head" on the pour. Apparently the bubbles ruined her Instagram-perfect picture. Or something. Some people's children, I tell you... At any rate, the Christkindl bier was a holiday special with a flavor profile description that immediately drew me in. On tasting, it had an inviting aroma and deep, slightly nutty flavor that perfectly matched the lovely color. My second pour was a Stiegl-Hausbier Butterblume; my husband went with an Original Stieglbock. The Butterblume promised butter tones balanced by spicy kicks, all tied together by a malty finish. I was eager to give it a try. On tasting, I found it had really nice sweet tones, which balanced out the slight hoppy finish. It also had a bit of citrus on the palate, which showed up after swallowing. There were about three or four other beers that I really wanted to try, but we wanted to get back out into the markets before everything started closing up for the night, since we only had one more day in the city. I kind of wish we would have just taken our time at the brewery, as I really enjoyed the beer and the views, and feel like we could have managed all our shopping the next day. Ah, well. Hindsight, and all that. At least I know I can find some Stiegl brews at liquor stores in my own city. Small consolation, but I'll take it.

Veal goulash and roast pork with pepper sauce

My husband and I came here after visiting the fortress. It has a beautiful view of the city and accommodates plenty of seating. The waiter was great even when we changed our drink order, great service! The veal goulash with spaetzel was delicious and the best in town, in my opinion. My husband ordered the roast pork with pepper sauce and he said it was okay, the meat was a bit tough. Overall, great place!

Food was good and plentiful. Service was quick and friendly. Ambiance was good. We are mid afternoon and it was not busy.

Entrance to the Stiegl Keller built into a mountain

I think the Stiegl-Keller in Salzburg is a great place to eat. It all starts with the view. Carved into the mountain that is crowned by Salzburg's imposing castle, the view overlooking the beautiful city of Salzburg from the dining rooms or outdoor terrace in warmer weather is unsurpassed. One almost feels they could leap onto one of the domes or spires dominating this ancient city skyline. And the beer is of course really good as this a Stiegl locale. Stiegl beer has been brewed in Salzburg since 1492 and once was kept cooler in summer months where this restaurant now stands. You have a wide choice of Stiegl beers - all of them good! I chose a weiss (white) beer which was excellent. Fortunately the food can also be quite tasty - at least the local Salzburger Bierfleisch was that I was served here. The gravy was richly flavored from the Stiegl beer and the braised meat tender and juicy. The purrée (mashed potatoes) and root vegetables were a perfect complement. And in the end as in the beginning, there is the view!

4 stars for the view alone. On a sunny day it is heaven. Such a unique spot and great view above the roofs of old town Salzburg. Huge ice cream Sunday options for €7. Haven't eaten their food but I will be back for the location alone!

Yelpers so…read morerecommended this place that we tried to go our first night in town, and were advised that it might be a 30 minute wait -- but the staff *also* told the 7 parties ahead of us that it might be a 30 minute wait for them, too. So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

We came in around 5pm for an early dinner before our train back to Munich and was able to grab a table for 4. We got incredibly lucky because the restaurant really filled up and by the time we left, there was a long line down the block. Of course we had to have their Original Wiener Schnitzel, which was so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We also had a Salzburger Nockerl, which is a classic Austrian soufflé dessert that is considered a culinary symbol of Salzburg. You do have to order this about 20 minutes in advance, so we ordered it when we made our entree orders. This was really good and honestly, more than enough for our group of 4. I also highly recommend their house beer, which was one of the best beers I had during our 10 day trip.

During our first visit to Salzburg in 2009, we asked our hotelier to recommend a genuine Austrian…read morerestaurant - one that did not offer "Menus for tourists" and that prepared authentic dishes. He recommended the Bärenwirt. Returning to Salzburg with our 11 adult children and grandchildren, we wanted them to have a similar authentic experience so we made a reservation at our old haunt, which has been in operations since 1663. Things have changed over the last 16 years. On our first visit, the menu was only in German and our server spoke to us in German until we threw in the towel and admitted, "Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsch. Englisch, bitte?" (I don't speak German well. English, please?) Now, 16 years later, English has become the default and today, the menu is presented in four languages. But the food is still just as authentic and delicious. Taking grandkids who range from 10 to 15 years of age, we were bracing for a few refrains of, "I don't LIKE that! It's weird!" or similar rants, but we heard none of it. All the kids (and parents, too, for that matter) dove gamely into the menu and found things that were to their liking. The menu is large and varied. Main dishes include roast pork, pasta, sausage with roasted potatoes, dumplings, goulash, schnitzel, fried chicken, boiled beef and (of course) bratwurst. The food was good, there was an excellent variety, and it was brought out quickly. Prices for main dishes were quite reasonable, with most under €20. Wiener Schnitzel was the most expensive, at €28,90 but it was an outlier. The only issue I had was the price of the soft drinks. Between our grandkids, they had 10 Cokes - at €5.90 EACH. That was €59 for sodas; more than we paid for all of our beers. My wife was determined that, for dessert, the kids and grands would all taste Kaiserschmarren mit Zwetschkenröster - cut-up pancake with raisins topped with powdered sugar and served with a jam for dipping. A truly Austrian experience that everyone enjoyed, though some more than others. On the night we visited, we encountered several other parties of Americans. I have no way of knowing whether the place has become that popular with visitors or management simply corralled us into the same room. Regardless, it was a very pleasant evening and one I'm sure we will repeat the next time we're in Salzburg.
