Schnitzel (veal) was fairly flavorless, fries were almost certainly pre-frozen, and their "best in town" roast pork was tough/chewy although the flavor was tasty and the dumpling was made well. Service is easy to reach and in our experience, friendly. Ambiance depends on which room you get - they have an expansive courtyard beer garden, a dark paneled pub style room, a light wood paneled room, an atrium, etc., all of which were comfortable. There was a children's play room as well (not for dining though). Reservations are suggested, although we won't be coming back. It's a bit of a tourist trap with prices to match. read more

We chose the upstairs dining area which was near to the very nice "Kid's Corner" which the "almost" four year old enjoyed while waiting for his lunch (ordered from a decent "children's menu"). The beer selection was limited (including their own brand) but decent. I ordered leberknödel suppe. The broth was quite plain and lacking in the umami I'd expect from a well prepared and seasoned broth. The flavor of the knödel was decent but the texture was very dense, requiring a knife to break it down into bite size pieces. I prefer leberknödel to be dense enough to hold together but light enough to break apart with the soup spoon. Finally, though the service was prompt, the demeanor of our waiter was not particularly hospitable. Your experience may be different, but this was mine. read more

My family and I are part-time Austrians, spending 3-4 months a year in the country, with Salzburg being a regular part of our stay. Over the years, we have visited Sternbräu approximately 5-6 times annually, enjoying its typical Austrian ambiance, decent food, average pricing, and usually satisfactory service. However, our most recent experience has compelled me to reassess and change my opinion of this establishment. On this occasion, my family (five of us, including our dog) traveled from Kitzbühel to Salzburg and decided to dine at Sternbräu. We were seated in a room on the second floor to the right, which appeared to be used for Lions Club meetings, as indicated by the stage and logo. Our waiter, an older man with white hair, dropped five English menus on the table without greeting us or offering any acknowledgment. I requested a menu in German, which he silently replaced while I was away in the restroom. When he returned to take our order, he stood at the side of the table without saying a word. At that point, I privately remarked to my wife in Spanish that the waiter was not particularly "simpático" (nice). To our astonishment, the waiter overheard this and became visibly upset, demanding to know what I had said. When I explained that we felt he was not being very friendly, he abruptly removed our menus and asked us to leave his section as he would not serve us. Trying to resolve the situation, I approached the manager and requested a new table. The manager initially agreed and instructed us to move to the first floor. However, by the time we relocated, the situation escalated. The manager informed us that the waiter claimed I had insulted him, which was entirely untrue. The word "simpático" simply means "nice" and was not used offensively. To our disbelief, the manager sided with the waiter and refused to serve us, effectively asking us to leave the restaurant. This response, in my view, was grossly unprofessional and unnecessarily exacerbated the situation. As a 60-year-old with extensive travel experience, I have never encountered such treatment. I cannot help but feel that this incident was tinged with prejudice, as my family and I were speaking Spanish. In conclusion, I strongly advise against visiting Sternbräu. The management's handling of this situation was deeply disappointing and unworthy of support. This version organizes the events clearly and conveys your perspective in a calm, professional manner. Was having a hard time finding any place to dine without reservations on a busy Sunday long holiday weekend. Thankfully we happened upon this place and they had the dishes we still had left to try - the famous nockrel dessert and goulash! We crossed our fingers and toes hoping we would be seated. This was the only place we came across that had an actual hostess and a line where you can wait to be seated instead of turned away. We waited about ten minutes before we were seated in one of the many wings of the restaurant. Love Le the ambiance and grand paintings capturing Austrian history throughout the eatery. We ordered the goulash, a small sausage plate, and were glad they had a single serving of the nockrel since it was just the two of us sharing. The goulash was fantastic - super flavorful. It made me want to learn to make it at home! Same for Nockrel, my new favorite dessert. Very fluffy and light with a tart fruit compote balancing the sweetness. Disappointed in the small sausage plate - hubby thought he was going to get some wurst but instead it was a plate of sliced hot dogs in water with red onions...not what we were expecting. Overall would definitely recommend this spot for anyone wanting amazing goulash or a single serving of nockrel. The service was painstakingly slow but that seems to be the norm. After a long day walking Christkindlmarkt, we needed an escape from the crowds and an ale or two to settle our nerves. (I kid, really - the market wasn't *that* bad, we just wanted to sample some of the local brews.) It was a bit confusing trying to find the right spot for us to post up for a bit - there's a bar and a restaurant and what seemed like a more upscale club-type place. After a bit of roaming, we made our way into the bar and sat down at one of the tables. They weren't very crowded when we got there, but not long after, people started coming in in waves. They had to lock one of the entrance doors by our table, and started making people wait to be seated. Through all that, we ordered a couple beers - the Stern Bier, since it was the house specialty. It wasn't terrible, but it was a bit bland on first sip, and took a while to "liven up" on the palate. While we were sitting there, we heard the waiter grumbling a bit about the number of tourists walking through the door. I thought that incredibly rude, considering WE were tourists, and the sheer number of people should have equaled good business for him and the company. It wasn't long after that incident that I noticed one of the female bartenders loudly sneeze - TWICE - into her hands...and then promptly grab a glass to serve up some wine. After letting out a loud (and completely involuntary) "EWWWWW!", I fled as quickly as possible, leaving my perplexed husband behind to settle the bill. He shivered appropriately after I told him what I'd witnessed, and we quick-stepped it out of the restaurant compound in search of things that didn't make our skin crawl. read more

Upon wandering around Salzburg I happened upon Sternbraü's charming outdoor restaurant and knew I had to enjoy the ambiance and have a meal here. I will say it is a large space and filled up quick, I was lucky to have wandered in about 10 min before the crowd because as it was lunch I didn't think to make a reservation. The ambiance is cute, outdoors but shade provided by trees in the courtyard. The Service was good, the beer was good. I ordered a schnitzel (my second of the trip) and it was meh. As others had mentioned a heavier breading and a bit overcooked. It really was nothing to write home about. But all in all it was a pleasant experience. I would probably give them another try but try something else. You want my advice steer clear of the schnitzel and just enjoy your time there and maybe get a wurst. read more

This is a great beer garden in the heart of Salzburg. Indoor and outdoor seating and very expansive! So much so that it was a bit hard to find the entrance! One star removed for the service. We did not have a very good server at all. It took awhile for him to come, we ordered our food and based on the description, my colleague got something entirely different than what we thought and when we asked if we could exchange it for something else, he said yes, but that we'd have to pay for both of the meals. Kind of annoying, but whatever. The courtyard we sat in was very nice and scenic and the food was great when we did get everything settled. The beer was great too (coming from someone who isn't a huge beer drinker.) I'd certainly come here again for a nice summer evening. read more

Sternbräu seems like part of some larger hospitality complex - there are a couple restaurants, a nice Biergarten, kind of all grouped together. I made a reservation, but don't think I would have had to, given a kind of chilly night (although it was a Saturday) and the place wasn't packed. Looking at the website, this might actually be part of a sort of "restaurant group" - similar to something like Lettuce Entertain You in Chicago, if that's familiar to any readers. I went with the schweinbraten, and it was mighty tasty. This is the second schweinbraten I've had, and it was a little leaner (although a bit dryer) than the first, and maybe also with less nice roasty bits on the outside as compared to the first. The bread dumpling was tender and tasty, nice shaggy dough, but honesty, as with the first, could have used more delicious brown roasty sauce to cut the bready-ness of that dumpling. The mild cabbage salad served with it was very good, a little bacon along with the caraway really sets things off. I wish I could give this 3.5 stars, but I'm going to pull back because of the dryer pork. Certainly worth a visit though, nothing anyone needs to avoid. Service was friendly, pricing was, as with basically every meal I've had on this trip, reasonable for what I got. Food certainly better than what I would expect from a more "commercial" feeling place, but that could be an unfair assessment. Would definitely return. read more

This review is strictly for the beer garden...love it! Its a nice retreat from the nonstop shopping consumer madness of Old Salzburg. The only problem is trying to find a table away from the smokers, but at least you're outdoors. Beers are €3-4 each, even for the half liter pours, which is fantastic! Unfortunately, I was too full to try the food, but it all looked good, and its all priced €10 or less. Conviently located with large indoor seating area. We had schnitzel, brats, fried Trout and house beers. The schnitzel carried a more natural taste, less salty than in Germany. The brat and sauerkraut was delicious and my Kids really like the trout. The house beers seemed "light" compared to German Beer but to Americans it would compare to an Amber Ale and IPA.
