    Goulash

The Wiener schnitzel was great. Came with lemon, cranberry sauce and potatoes. The full size was very filling. Also has a nice glass of gruner veltliner. Service was fast and friendly. Edit: we liked it so much we came again our second night in Salzburg. Tonight I got the large portion of the goulash. It had 2 dumplings and plenty of meat and a delicious gravy. Both nights a large tour group came in together. The staff is amazing, a large group coming in all at once didn't seem to effect them at all. Watching other tables the time for orders to come out stayed fast and every table was getting attention.

Really good and friendly service. I got the pork medallions in crème sauce. The Hof is very quiet.

Located at a basement of a hotel at the center of downtown Salzburg, good place to come with a group for casual dinner. Reservation wasn't required but I called them in advance anyway. We ordered several small food to share with some local wine. Ambiance is more like a beer hall but I wanted to taste local wine. Server spoke very good English. They have seasonally available white asparagus when I visited in May and thoroughly enjoyed them very much. Other typical bar food was pretty good, we enjoyed food and drinks that night. Reasonably priced with good service.

Food was all very good though a bit pricey. I recommend the tartar as it was delicious. Views of Salzburg are beautiful.

Dinner here was fine, but not the 4.5 star experience Yelp led us to believe. Yelpers so…read morerecommended this place that we tried to go our first night in town, and were advised that it might be a 30 minute wait -- but the staff *also* told the 7 parties ahead of us that it might be a 30 minute wait for them, too. So we went elsewhere. We went back the next night at an off-hour and while the food was fine, I would have been highly disappointed had we waited in line for 30 minutes, let alone 2 or more hours. This restaurant has a prime location and a strong online reputation. And perhaps our experience was impacted by the fact that we went at an off-hour. Still, there are much better options, with equal character, available across the city. Consider branching out -- and check my other Salzburg reviews for other alternatives.

We came in around 5pm for an early dinner before our train back to Munich and was able to grab a table for 4. We got incredibly lucky because the restaurant really filled up and by the time we left, there was a long line down the block. Of course we had to have their Original Wiener Schnitzel, which was so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. We also had a Salzburger Nockerl, which is a classic Austrian soufflé dessert that is considered a culinary symbol of Salzburg. You do have to order this about 20 minutes in advance, so we ordered it when we made our entree orders. This was really good and honestly, more than enough for our group of 4. I also highly recommend their house beer, which was one of the best beers I had during our 10 day trip.

During our first visit to Salzburg in 2009, we asked our hotelier to recommend a genuine Austrian…read morerestaurant - one that did not offer "Menus for tourists" and that prepared authentic dishes. He recommended the Bärenwirt. Returning to Salzburg with our 11 adult children and grandchildren, we wanted them to have a similar authentic experience so we made a reservation at our old haunt, which has been in operations since 1663. Things have changed over the last 16 years. On our first visit, the menu was only in German and our server spoke to us in German until we threw in the towel and admitted, "Ich spreche nicht sehr gut Deutsch. Englisch, bitte?" (I don't speak German well. English, please?) Now, 16 years later, English has become the default and today, the menu is presented in four languages. But the food is still just as authentic and delicious. Taking grandkids who range from 10 to 15 years of age, we were bracing for a few refrains of, "I don't LIKE that! It's weird!" or similar rants, but we heard none of it. All the kids (and parents, too, for that matter) dove gamely into the menu and found things that were to their liking. The menu is large and varied. Main dishes include roast pork, pasta, sausage with roasted potatoes, dumplings, goulash, schnitzel, fried chicken, boiled beef and (of course) bratwurst. The food was good, there was an excellent variety, and it was brought out quickly. Prices for main dishes were quite reasonable, with most under €20. Wiener Schnitzel was the most expensive, at €28,90 but it was an outlier. The only issue I had was the price of the soft drinks. Between our grandkids, they had 10 Cokes - at €5.90 EACH. That was €59 for sodas; more than we paid for all of our beers. My wife was determined that, for dessert, the kids and grands would all taste Kaiserschmarren mit Zwetschkenröster - cut-up pancake with raisins topped with powdered sugar and served with a jam for dipping. A truly Austrian experience that everyone enjoyed, though some more than others. On the night we visited, we encountered several other parties of Americans. I have no way of knowing whether the place has become that popular with visitors or management simply corralled us into the same room. Regardless, it was a very pleasant evening and one I'm sure we will repeat the next time we're in Salzburg.
