I'm really torn over this. A small historic little restaurant with a tavern feel. We had no rezzie but were seated immediately. the table for two was next to a table of 7 young people all drinking with very little eating. The noise was awful as we were only a couple of feet apart. The other two tables of two next to us also were grimacing. In rooms this small I wonoder why not just make it all communal family style dining as couples have a miserable time. In the other room there was a party of twelve and then a few other smaller tables. Our food arrived in 5 minutes from ordering, so obviously out of pre-cooked batches. Pablo had the asparagus ravioli, a massive portion. I had pork, again a large portion. You will never starve in Austria! Food was A-OK. We ate and ran. read more

If you are a non-local especially if your skin color is not white. EXPECT TO BE RUDELY STARED AT by all the locals eating here. I've ate here during the Mercedes G-Class tour of Austria and I find the restaurant "employees & most locals" are so rude against anybody who are not Austrians or Germans. Especially if you are an American! Oddly they are not friendly to American visitors dining at their local hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Even the waiter asked me if I had money to pay for my dinner which was about $17 euros. Are you kidding me? They're lucky I didn't sued them. I'll just let it go in this review. I'll give a two star rating since I liked their food and it was delicious. The meal I ordered was prepared with perfection. I just don't appreciate the bad attitude and the poor judgments they have when Non-Austrians/Germans are visiting this place. read more

Maybe my favorite meal of the trip. A bit off the path, a bit crowded, but well worth it. A terrific wine list, and snitzel that I'll be thinking about for years. A super old, quaint, lovely room, filled with locals and tourists all drinking beer and spirits. Decor is sort of someones house you're visiting on the way across the country, in the best way. This place well deserves its high Yelp rating! On this trip I had a fair amount of meat-gravy-dumplings meals, and this one takes the cake! My sister and I ordered the goose and duck. Both meats were flavorful, tender, and delicious, and their sauces matched them well. The dumplings were doughy and took on the sauces well. My only caveat is that I expected the two dishes to look more different considering their different descriptions, but they ended up being very similar. Also the cabbage was a bit much in proportion to the other elements and a bit sweet. But still, a great place to go to try very high quality Austrian cuisine. read more

Remember the serial murder/torturer from Silence of the Lambs who wasn't Hannibal Lecter? Yeah well that dude's angrier little brother works here. He'll be easy to spot. He'll be the guy yelling at you. I get it, they don't want this place turning into a touristy place so speak some German. They should probably contact that bastard Rick Steves to get this place out of his book. Also don't order the Dunkel. Sure it may be the easiest beer to pronounce but I think this place gets most of its beer from a cooperative that doesn't sell the Dunkel. Thus ordering Dunkel = more yelling. My fiancé and I came here, we loved the Wiener schnitzel! Was one of our favorite meals on this trip. The only thing - we didn't realize smoking was allowed in the establishment (silly Americans), so right next to us was a group casually smoking while we were trying to enjoy our meal and not choke on their smoke. If I could give a zero score for this place, I would and I'm a pretty reasonable patron. Restaurants like Paul Stube are the reason why American tourists have bad experiences while traveling in Europe and the reason why establishments fail. The staff at this place are disrespectful, rude, and straight-up awful towards anyone that isn't a local or doesn't speak German. Look I get it, living in a small and crazy touristy town like Salzburg can be rough, but get out of the service business if you can't handle good customer service!!! If it hadn't been for me being able to understand the language spoken amongst the employees, I wouldn't even know how horribly mean and unprofessional they were towards us. We arrived after running through a sketchy alleyway and walking clear across town to get to this place. We were sold on its high ratings, solid reviews, and great photos. It was our first hour in Salzburg and we were stoked, excited to check this outdoor biergarten out. We climbed a flight of stairs and were greeted by three guys. We spoke basic, broken German and asked nicely for a table. Before one of the staff members replied to me, he made a hush hush comment to the other two guys along the lines of "...oh these are Americans... Just great. " with negative undertones he grabbed two menus and told us to sit wherever we wanted. He came by almost 10 minutes after we sat and handed us two menus, in English. We ordered two Weissbiers. He brought the beers a few minutes later and asked if we had any questions. I asked if he could provide me with a "deutsch menu" aka German menu. He replied with a guilty and confused tone and asked why I needed a menu in German. I said I wanted to see the items in German since I didn't understand some of the translations on the English menu. He finally agreed and returned a minute later with the menu I requested. I reviewed the German menu and to my disbelief found discrepancies in pricing across the ENTIRE MENU. Everything was legitimately 0.50-3 euros more PER ITEM on the English menu. This place was ripping off everyone that came through that needed an English menu. Not just Americans! Wow. My dining companion and I realized we were being scammed and our beers even cost us a euro more than if we had spoken German! We have photos to prove it. We will post them. This business should be shut down. As soon as we realized all of this we immediately got up to leave and pay. We were so shocked and taken aback. We weren't about to order food here and let them get away with a 20-30% bonuses our entire bill just because we spoke English!!! We walked to the bar to wait for our server to come by so we could let him know we were leaving. When we approached the bar another employee was serving beer. He noticed us and asked if he could help with something... In German of course. I replied kindly letting him know that we were trying to pay for our beers. He glared at me and starting raising his voice in German saying things that were abrupt and rude along the lines of "you are served at the table and you MUST pay at the table! You crazy fool! You need to wait at the table so your server can collect cash from you. Dumb American!" My dining companion and I were so incredibly pissed by this overall experience. We gave the server cash and left as fast as we could. Can't say cheers cause this was a horrible experience; honestly, probably the worst experience I've ever had in my life at a restaurant. We went here for dinner our first night in Salzburg with our tour group. It is a very cozy pub atmosphere with excellent food and fast service. The ambiance, while already great, was definitely increased by the thunderstorm that was brewing outside! Started off with a basic salad that was very fresh. Main course was beef, cabbage, and potatoes. Fantastic apricot cake for dessert. We all had a wonderful time and very much enjoyed the food. I'd go back again for sure if I ever make it back to lovely Salzburg! read more

On a visit to this area, we found this gem of a local restaurant. The local beer is tasty as you would expect. Our food was very good, beyond our expectation. We enjoyed the seasonal dishes - pumpkin salad (different than expected, using marinated pumpkin) and celery cream soup w/apple and walnuts. We also had the groestl (potato, bacon, egg, cabbage) - a real local comfort dish. Very enjoyable! We enjoyed the outdoor seating, able make use of the heaters. Service was good, no issues. As others have said, location is challenging, but google maps got us there. I recommend you check this place out when visiting. read more

Not easy to find, but well worth the effort. On the side of the hill, narrow alley just below the Salzburg Fortress. Even the girl at our hotel desk (just down the hill) had to look up directions on the internet. Once we found the sign (see second picture) we went up one flight of stairs to find three closed, black doors. One said "Privat", one was locked, so by process of elimination we entered the third, which opened to the bar. Cozy, pub-like bar area with small adjacent dining area. Nice looking outdoor patio didn't work for us as a light rain had been falling most of the day. The night we were there it wasn't crowded, most likely from the rain. Typical Austrian/German meals with a nice selection of wine and beer. Our dinner was fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced. All in all a wonderful find, and I'll return whenever in Salzburg. At the end of the night I asked our server how people found the place. He said "oh, they find us". I would imagine they do, and are happy we did. read more

This place has great atmosphere and really good food. I came in the summer so it is noce to sit outside in the roofed patio. In this section people are allowed to smoke so take into account if you dislike that. It did not bother me personally. I had a beer and the friend I came with ordered a Radler, great choice for people who don't have a strong preference towards beer. Dinner was fantastic! We shares two dishes, the pork Wiener Schnitzel and Kasnock'n. Both Austrian dishes, both really good! I had never tried Kasnock'n before and there were other Austrian dishes I would come back to try. I was really pleased and satisfied with the food, portion size and service. All the dishes around me also looked great and if I had more time in Salzburg I would come again. Highly recommended! read more

We arrived at 19.00 on a wednesday evening to be told that we must have reserved a table as they were all taken. However, our very welcoming barman invited us to sit at the bar to eat. This we gladly did as it left us close to everything - ie beer and food. We were handed both the english AND the german menus (curious?!) And there were no price differences. The house beer, served in delph mugs, was delicious. Our friendly barman explained the menu to us and also, the house specials that night. We chose the ravioli with salad and the roast pork with dumpling and sauerkraut which were both served up promptly. The food was wonderful as was the service from the very friendly staff who constantly checked in with us to see if everything was ok. No stares. No unfriendly locals. The place was busy; small, but wonderfully cosy. Our advice would be to reserve before arriving...although eating at the bar was a real treat. read more
