After getting rejected by Oktoberfest, we had to see the city, so we ran into Augustinerkeller. It's huge - the majority of a city block. It has a full playground for kids, tons of trees, it's literally a park that's main focus is drinking beer. It's a pretty calm place with an older crowd - not a place to get crazy. They also have a good food selection, and for sure pork knuckle was on the menu and delicious. read more

This is a nice restaurant catty corner from the Hauff Bronner house which is always packed and crazy and offers cheaper beers and some classic German selections as far as food goes. The service was pretty good given that it was really busy in the summer full of tourists and it wasn't too expensive. There's a $30 minimum to use any credit card which is important to keep in mind if you're traveling alone - nice dinner no Wi-Fi. read more

Good sausages. Good meat. Cheap beer!(I'm comparing them to the ones in the Bier Gardens). Crowded in the evenings but you get a good feel of Germany from the crowd. The perfect place to spend my first night in Munich. Seriously, nothing is better than a cold beer in a beautiful outdoor garden after a 14 hour flight. This place is giant - about 5,000 seats outside I think - but they were pretty much all full on the Tuesday night that I was there. That's gotta say something. Augustiner is super chill. You could stay there all night and I doubt anyone would bug you to order more. But with the beer being so tasty, it's really in your best interest to keep drinking ;) I was fascinated by the beer glass trucks that come around to pick up all the empties. I guess I've just never been in that massive of a drinking establishment before. Or seen that many empty glasses in one place... The food is fine. Pretzels were yummy (and also followed the massive theme) and the potato salad was fantastic. The rest of food was pretty meh. My dad got "ham" that was really more of a giant hot dog type-object disguised as ham. It did get tastier with more beer though ;) I wouldn't come on a rainy day, but it's an awesome spot on a warm summer night. Can we import it to San Francisco? Fabulous spot. It's relatively close to the Hauptbanhof, so centrally located and easy to get to. On the evening I visited (pre Oktoberfest), there was quite a lot of drinking happening. The food is good, what you expect from German fare. As is customary in much of Europe, you may be seated at a table with strangers, but all the better way to make new friends! I was seated with a nice couple of students from London. Oddly enough, this was one of the few places in Munich where the server didn't speak English. A great opportunity to get some German practice for me. If you're in Munich, try this place. Good beer, good food, and tons of outdoor seating. read more

The waiter was really friendly and dramatically enhanced the experience for us. He was spread a bit thin, so service wasn't super fast, but was definitely on par with European standards. Lots of good menu options, and the food was delicious. The meat platter with different sausages was a great way to try multiple different things. The cabbage side that came with our other dish was very tasty and well seasoned. Everything seemed very authentic to us (non Germans). The beer selection is unsurpassed and I shouldn't have to tell you how incredibly delicious the beer is. We had a big blueberry pancake for desert that was fresh and fantastic. Big portions here. The service was great and the food was great. I have nothing but great things to same about the experience. It was quick service and good food, what more can one ask for? The waiter was very attentive to our needs but the weirdest thing was he brought out basket of pretzels under the guise that they were complimentary but at settling the cheque you're charged for each you've consumed and they recycle them, meaning moving them from table to table. Perhaps it's a German thing which I am cool with since this recycling of various types of foods were common in the states way back before we became too high societal. read more

I am certain this is what heaven is like. Augustiner without a doubt was the best beer I've ever had in my entire life. All beer in Germany is delicious due to the purity laws they instill. However, the Helles is by far and above the best I've had in Germany. This biergarten is amazing...huge..and covered with trees. And most of the clientele spoke German so I assume there weren't tooo many tourists there. Also, the food, oh my god, the food!! My friend and I shared schnitzel with potatoes, white asparagus and the spaetzle. I was really hoping for kase spaetzle but they didn't serve it at this location sadly. While you think this may be a heavy meal, German food is made with magical properties that don't make you get food comas. Top that off with clean beer and what else do you need??! I still dream about this place nightly. read more

After several beers during the day, including a visit to Hofbrau, we later found ourselves at the Augustiner Bierhalle. Now this particular beer hall deserves an honorable mention, not just because it was one of my first authentic Munich meal experiences, but because the food and beer were absolutely delicious. We promptly sat ourselves at an empty table and ordered a Dunkel and Weisbier, both of which proved to be thirst quenchers and the perfect compliment to our meals. My girlfriend ordered a lentil dish that came accompanied with a frankfurter, a ravioli, and some sort of string-like potatoes that looked like foam but tasted great. I ordered beef goulash which proved to be a hearty serving of beef with a large potato dumpling. The food was extremely filling and savory. Our sever seemed like a nice enough guy, but kept screwing up everyone's check, including our's. In the end I think we ended up having to pay an extra euro, which wasn't a big deal to us. If you love good food and good beer in a traditional German setting, than Augustiner Bierhalle is right up your alley. Prost! read more

Two separate recommendations led us to this biergarten on our first night in Munich. The menu offers a variety of German specialties - so I went for Schweinshaxe, a true Bavarian dish. The meat was very tender and the skin nice and crispy. It was served with some tasty potatoes and a great sauerkraut salad (not very strong on the vinegar and a little bacon thrown in to make sure we had enough pork for the meal). We were there on a relatively quiet mid-week evening, but the atmosphere was still lively. The group at the next table was clearly practicing for their Oktoberfest drinking, consuming more beer and food than I would have thought possible in a week - let alone a couple of hours. The staff were really friendly and outgoing...not to mention patient with my rusty German. It's about a 10-minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof and worth the trip for an evening of fun and good food. read more

Augustiner-Keller is a must visit in Munich. They have both an indoor restaurant and a two section beer garden. In the beer garden they have both hosted tables and tables where you just go to a vender to get food & drinks. Food is a 3.5/5 and the experience is a maximum. Their beer garden is MASSIVE. This is a very cool place to visit. read more

I had great time, drank some nice beer, ate some good chow. What I discovered was the warm and honest welcome that Munich locals can extend to visitors like myself. Had a great time here. Enjoyed the Oktoberfest revelry going on inside the hall.. and found the Tiroler Salad (yes I got a salad) to be freaking delicious with giant slabs of bacon/ way more oomph than expected. Also, despite the crowd, we actually found a table for our group of 10 within a very reasonable amount of time which I would have thought impossible. Only complaint was the very angry server who seemed like he would rather be doing anything but serving us food/drinks. We had very simple orders ("10 mas please!") and it was like we had wronged him somehow. God save us when we wanted to use a credit card at the end... Visiting Munich alone, this restaurant was highly rated on yelp so I decided to go. Being alone, I looked around for a seat but all of the small (4-seat) tables were claimed as reserved and off limits. Therefore, the seat i took was at THE END of a 10 seat table... leaving the rest open for other guests. The waiter then ignored me for a while, only coming to me and then reprimanding me for taking an entire table for myself, as if I had other options. It seems he also tried to get revenge on me by pouring my beer with half the glass being foam. read more

This beer garden is located within walking distance of the münchen hbf train station. Once you walk in you can just sit down at an available table and the server will be with you shortly. This is not a complete beer garden experience, as the servers bring the beer, but they do have good beer and good food. Overall, not the best meal I had, but quite a good experience. read more

We got into Munich on a rainy Saturday, so obviously the first thing we thought to do was grab some beer to raise our spirits! My friend, who loves beer, was hyped to come here and for good reason. We were able to find a table outside with covered seating and a nearby space heater. The beer was great and the food was yummy as well (we got sausages and the pork knuckle). Since it had just rained, the majority (everywhere not covered) of the outdoor area was empty, so I can only imagine the atmosphere on a nice day! It's been a couple of years since I was here. It is an oasis in the city. When you are here you won't believe you a a few minuets walk from the train station. We came here on a Sunday in July. It was not full of drunk college students like the beer gardens in the US. There are families with children and they even have a playground. I found it very enjoyable to enjoy beer and pretzels while sitting under the chestnut trees. You must go when you are in Munich. read more

The Augustine Keller has the same vibe as the Hofbrauhaus, but with a little less hustle and bustle. The food was particularly good. We had the pork roast, mustard schnitzel, and the pepper schnitzel. The sauce on the pork roast and the pepper schnitzel were both worthy to write home about. For German beer, it was good. We are more particular to Belgian quads and Tripels, so the styles are crazy different. We had Dunkels at the Augustine. The Dunkel had a carmely malty flavor towards the backend. The atmosphere was fun. It's always welcoming when all the people around you have smiles on their faces. The tables are long and are in the style of communal seating. You may choose to keep to your group, or engage your newly acquainted neighbor without feeling weird. If you are a 'me' only person then this isn't your place. The Augustine is definitely worth the visit. You can even go as far as skipping the Hofbrauhaus to go to the Augustine and not feel bad about it. In fact, you'll likely promote the Augustine as your destination of choice for an authentic German experience. read more

The beer is great, and I'm not much of a beer drinker. We were here for a late lunch/early dinner on a weekday. I came here for lunch and a beer and had an enjoyable meal. Unfortunately when I visited in October it was too cold for the outdoor beer garden, so I sat inside in one of the dining rooms. The Edelstoff beer that I had was excellent, and the schweinebraten was very tasty, with tender pieces of roasted pork on a sauce with a dumpling and red cabbage. Typical German food, but delicious and very well prepared. The restaurant was not too crowded around noon on a weekday. The underground beer hall did not open until 4:00 pm. I suspect it gets more lively then. The restaurant is not quite in the main tourist area, but it's a short walk of about a half mile from the main train station, so well worth a visit, particularly in the summer when the beer garden is open. read more

Beer Stop 126 --- (Beer Review Only, no food). I came here with some coworkers as they wanted to show me an "authentic" beer hall experience. This certainly wasn't it! This place was full of tourists busy taking pictures, instagramming, tweeting, etc. People -- put down your phone and enjoy your beer and company. Anyway, yes, they do serve beer by the Litter here. Whoop de doo. If you want a semi-authentic beer hall experience full of tourists, come here. However, there are plenty of other good spots in Germany to enjoy a brew. read more

Make a reservation!! This place is very popular/ busy. I'll admit i was nervous this would be a tourist trap but i was proven to be very wrong. The waiters were dressed up which added to the fun! Regardless of the crowd being mostly visitors, there was still plenty of locals and native speakers to compete the experience here. The atmosphere alone is a reason to visit this spot. You can order a beer by the liter! Go big or go home. Its all about the experience here. Moving onto the food... i was hesitant to try the local foods but was not disappointed when i did. The wiener schnitzel was absolutely amazing. perfectly pan fried, seasoned/breaded chicken with a side of cranberry to add a pop of flavor and the veg was great. pan fried potatoes cooked to perfection. The most tasty meal i had in Munich and it was reasonably priced at 18€ for the quality of the food and experience. This was quite the experience. This is a traditional biergarten that is split into 3 sections, restaurant seating inside, restaurant seating outside, and self-service seating outside. We sat in the 2nd of the 3. The "garten" itself is very nice, with trees providing shade and the whole area being secluded from the streets outside. The menu is pretty simple, with typical German fare. I had the mixed sausage plate with mash and sauerkrat, which was delicious and very filling and a giant pretzel. I also had a weißbeir, a Munich speciality. Btw, they only serve 1 LITER beers in the evening!! The atmosphere is also great, with live music and people dressed in typical Bavarian outfits. It isn't a tourist trap, with most of the clientele being German. Overall one of the better biergartens in town, though it is a little pricey. read more
