This is a unique place for American tourists without reservations. You must be assertive in finding a seat outside; we saw several small groups leave out of frustration. The beer, brats and sauerkraut were good, but I preferred the Hofbrau House food, comfort and service. read more

We ventured in around 7:30 pm on a Tuesday night and the place was packed. A server grabbed us and sat us at the end of a long table which would soon fill up with several strangers. It was quite warm in there and I wish I had been wearing a tee shirt and not a sweater. The atmosphere was lively and energetic. There was a basket of pretzels waiting on the table for us so we grabbed a beer and had a pretzel to start. They use the "honor system" with the pretzels and ask you how many you had prior to bringing your check. After just a few minutes we ordered our food. I ordered the kasespatzle (cheese noodles topped with crisp fried onions served with a mixed salad). And OMG! It was melt in your mouth delicious without being too heavy. It was rich enough to know that I was eating "on vacation" food though. My boyfriend ordered the pork knuckle dish (although I neglected to take a photo of it!) and the combo of the pork with the red cabbage and sauerkraut was perfect and so delicious. I thought the prices for everything were very reasonable! We had 2 entrees and 2 beers each, and 1 pretzel each and I believe the entire check was around 32 Euro! The service was fast and courteous but I wouldn't say overly friendly. I highly recommend this restaurant for the authentic German experience! We liked this spot better than Hofbräuhaus! Overall its a huge property with an outdoor beer garden and huge interior space as well as some basement areas. Also they also have a curling rink that you can reserve although we did not see it. Came here Oktoberfest week, which perhaps takes away from the vibe as more people are over at the real deal. We came at night, when sadly no one was outside at their massive, massive beer garden. We took our seats inside which had the band playing until about 9 and settled in for a few beers and some grub. Our server sucked. We practically had to tackle him to get his attention to order more beer or food and he was very upset when we didn't tip him much (you don't have to tip in Germany they make a living wage so tipping is truly an expression of your gratitude for service and his sucked) That said, the beer is good, I esp like their Dunkel. We went and were extremely disappointed with the food. We ordered the shnitzel and the farmer's pan and it was just bad! The shnitzel was soggy and not at all crispy as it should be and felt like it was wormed up in a microwave. the farmer's pan had a meat patti which was blend and hard sausage that was tiny and pork that was very dry. We love our German beers and had never tried Augustiner before. This place was recommended to us by our City Tours guide earlier in the day so we had to check it out. We went during Oktoberfest so the atmosphere inside as vibrant, but still tamer, compared to some of the other places we'd visited while in Munich. (More vibrant than Löwenbräu, tamer than Hofbräuhaus.) It was a little chilly out so the biergarten didn't have too many people. Before finding a table in the bier hall, we checked out the "keller" or "cellar." This is where they once stored the beer before refrigeration. It is worth a stop if you're there. In the bier hall, there was a band playing traditional German music on stage. The hall was busy but not packed and we had no trouble finding a table. Our waitress was attentive and the food and drink came quick. My wife had the Munich-style wiener schnitzel with horseradish. It was definitely the best schnitzel we'd had in Munich, and maybe ever. I had the pork knuckle, which was super crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. You can tell that they know how to prepare Bavarian food. We'd definitely put this at the top of our list when we go back to Munich in the future. read more

Forget Hofbrauhaus. THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO if you want an awesome beer hall experience! It's a bit off of the beaten path -- you'll be walking from the Hauptbahnhof for several blocks and wonder if you went the wrong way... then there it appears on the corner. It's a massive outdoor area with trees and tables as far as the eye can see. We came here on a beautiful night and had a few beers and it was a great experience. Many locals hang out here, but since it's self-service you can pick up a few beers at the cafeteria line without too much difficulty. The stations are labeled as to what style of beer they are pouring, and there are several food stations as well. You can get a BIG liter of beer for around 7-8 euro. A GREAT experience if you are looking for an authentic Bavarian beer garden! read more

I love it! The prime example of good food, massive amounts of beer, and good, old fashioned German efficiency. I only ever sat outside and gotten everything through the cafeteria style food and beer counter, so this review only applies to that. Seating shouldn't be a problem, so many tables everywhere, and nearly every spot in the shade. Come for the beer and pretzels, stay for the atmosphere. read more

The vibe was quite nice and had the biergarden feel. It was a sit wherever you want and someone will be with you, kind of place. I ordered the pork knuckle and it came with a potato dumpling. Both were quite good. The only reason for not giving this place a higher rating was the service. The waiter asked me where I was from (as I was paying) and when I told him the US, he immediately said "we don't add gratuity here automatically, do you want to add some?" I know he didn't do this with others. I said "sure" and he tipped himself 5 euros. He didn't even let me select what to give. Going to a beer hall and beer gardens is a must while in Munich! It was January so the beer garden was closed but the beer hall was popping! There were many options for beer and the food was great! We sat in the foyer/bar area the main dinning hall was behind us and it was very large cafeteria style table set up. So don't be afraid to talk to the people around you! I'm sure this place can get quite touristy, but plenty of locals go here as well. Friendly, English speaking staff, English menus and clean bathrooms! Go here! read more

This biergarten is ginormous. When I got here at 7 pm, the whole hall was filled with delicious aromas, and lots of cheer! They have free wifi, so I was able to find my friends easily. Don't let the prices scare you, the portions are GINORMOUS. we got the the wiener schnitzel (ask for extra sauce on the side because they can scimp) and spatzel (which was unfortunately very dry. my friend is german - from berlin, and said it was not good at all). I preferred the wiener schnitzel I had in Austria (this one was not breaded and very dry)...but that sauce was just decadent. I got the 1/2 pork knuckle with dumpling which was ABSOLUTELY fantastic (also get extra gravy on the side....) the skin is super SUPER crunchy and fragrant/but not greasy, and the meat is so tender. It fell right off the bone. The best surprise was the dumpling which was chewy but in a not gross way (its a mix of potato and bread). It lapped up the gravy perfectly. Each bite is the best with a bit of knuckle (with skin), dumpling and sauerkraut (though my friend preferred the red cabbage..it comes with both). the Augstiner Edelstoff is great! I finally found a beer that I love (and I tried this first in Salzburg..so when I saw an Augustiner in Munichl...I had to return). It is a wheat beer with hops. It has a fantastic after taste. It is super crisp. I tried the Radler as well (which is just the Edelstoff with lemon Fanta) which I did not like as much. I imagine it would be good in the summer. ... but it was too cold for that! If they had an Augustiner biergarten in America....my life would be made FYI pretzels on the table are made fresh daily. They are not complimentary (but are delicious) read more

My favorite beer hall while I was in Germany. Place is huge!!!!! You can dine in or self serve yourself cafeteria style. Portions on their food are huge. Watch out for bees, or just act cool like the rest of the locals who don't mind the bees. There is tons of seating, so you never have to worry and the place gets crowded but you will still be able to find a spot. My friends and I met some Swedish peeps and started playing drinking games with them. So we are all pounding 1 liter beers one after another, great stuff here. If you need some smokes, they have a vending machine type cigarette dispenser if you run out. Lines move fast, so you are in and out rather quickly for the beer or food. read more

My favorite of the beer halls in Munich so far...(feel free to beg to differ). The beer garden is a haven from the commercial surroundings of the main train station and the Hacker Bridge--pleasant to sit outside and relax with friends and such. The beer hall inside is big, noisy, yet charming--there is a basement where sometimes live music is played. Augustiner beers are among my favorite Bavarian beers. I'm a "Dunkel" girl, so I'm a fan of their Dunkels from the tap ("Augustiner Dunkel vom Fass"). Their Weißbier is also very easy to drink. The food was on par. The Obazda cheese spread paired superbly with the beers. I tried the Tiroler Salad, which was average. Dampfnudel was great with the vanilla sauce. I would definitely go there with friends, local or visiting. read more

This was my favorite place in Munich. It helped that it was very close to my hotel, but I was told but others in the US that I had to come here. A friend of mine who lives in Munich advised this is where locals go as opposed to Hofbrau, etc. We actually went twice over the course of three days! The beer is good and they have great eats as well. I love the serve yourself so that you can leave as you please. The space is gynormous! And it's gorgeous with a lot of tree coverage. You arrive at a beer garden in Munich. You don't speak any German. A waiter comes up to you and says "BEER?" You say yes. "BIG? SMALL?" he asks. "BIG" You say. You sit down at a table outside and two minutes later, two massive steins of beer clunk down in front of you. You look at the menu: at the top, it only says "BIER". Not weissebeer, not dark beer, just BIER. You sip from your massive stein, you eventually decipher the German-only menu well enough to order strudel. The strudel is warm, nutty, and flavorful and it goes perfectly with the stein of beer and with the cozy heat lamps and blankets on the patio. At some point, a German band plays for a few minutes and everyone sings along. It is a chilly night in Munich, but you are warm and happy. This is an evening at Augustiner-Keller. After a super disappointing night at touristy, rude Hofbrauhaus, Augustiner-Keller was the saving grace of beer gardens on our Munich trip. The beer was amazing, the food was awesome, and the service was good. I ended up buying one of the steins (6.50 euro) and now it's sitting on my desk as a happy reminder of a wonderful night. read more

After two days in a row of eating at the larger Augustinerkeller near Marienplatz, my friend and I decided to ask the guy at our hotel where we should eat. He went on and on and on about the most delicious Bavarian food in the city. Seriously, he was a talker, so the story lasted about 15 minutes. Finally, with our mouths watering, he tells us the name of this drool-worthy restaurant - Augustinerkeller. He was so disappointed to hear that we'd already eaten there twice, only to discover that while we were sort of talking about the same place, he was talking about a different location that was actually closer to our hotel. What the heck, we thought, they do have fantastic Bavarian food, so we'll try out this other location. In general, this location seems to be less busy, and perhaps has more locals. The inside is stereotypically Bavarian, so I was a huge fan. The menu is more limited than the other location we visited, but it has the main offerings and the food was done very well. And, of course, you can get their famous Augustiner beer, so I was happy as a clam. In my book, Augustiner can do no wrong. And, it was validating to know that my first choice in Bavarian food was also that of a local. It's been 20 years since I was sort of a local (lived in Munich for a year) and it's nice to know that some things stay the same. read more

We traveled with our kids and the awesome outdoor playground made the experience that much better and saved the day! As we came in the winter, sadly did not partake of the garden part of the beer garden. Also, the cellars were closed, but you could still walk down there. But then I forgot to do so after we were done. Sadness :( The dining area at the entrance consisted of seating around big kegs. However, we were led to the room on the right, which was outfitted cafeteria-style with communal long tables. In usual German style, you're seated together with other people. Good way to make some new friends! They have English menus available. I had the suckling pig and duck with red cabbage, and dining partner had the suckling pig with sauerkraut. The portions were sizeable and the food was good, though heavy. Be aware that if you order a large beer, it's a 1L maßkrug that is larger than my face (didn't exactly measure, but it's close enough). I actually thought large would be a regular large, and you'd have to specially order one of the huge ones. The atmosphere was friendly, the service was fast, and the food was good. However, I just didn't find it as fun as Hofbrauhaus. read more

Definitely not my favorite beer garden stop of the trip. We went here first b/c it was the nearest beer garden to our hotel. We took the tram...it's right between two stops, so pick your poison. Between the two of us, we managed to at least partially consume 4 brats w/sauerkraut, Flammerkuchen (pizza with sour cream, bacon & onions), bretzel, 1L beer & .5L Orangenschorle. The poor bretzel never did get finished. I was on a bit of carb overload. The pizza was only warm from the heat lamps...the thing was probably fresh hours before it hit my plate. I'm sure many like to eat outside with the trees, and I guess in theory I did...until three leaves fell inside my drink. Boo! My husband really liked him brats & beer, so I don't think he missed out on much. It didn't seem very busy, but probably it wasn't ridiculously slow. Many 200 folks at 6 pm on a Saturday? It's just not very many when you can seat thousands. We were probably too early as well. I wouldn't go back. It was actually our most expensive meal in Germany (29 euros for two) and not nearly the value we ate at other places. Though I wouldn't be opposed to having them open a beer garden with children's playground in my neighborhood! read more

I absolutely loved this beer garden! The beer was fantastic and the Friday before Oktoberfest it was the perfect place to spend the evening. We hung out with a large group of Australian college kids and just BSed the night away. The trees, the lights the general vibe here were perfect! For me when I arrived the whole notion of what a beer garden is immediately just made sense to an outlander. It had the feeling of coming home for me. I can't say enough about how perfect it is to be spending an evening under the trees with the steady thrum of conversation and laughter...the clinking of mugs from the distant serving lines and just the general atmosphere. We went twice and each time experienced some of the sweetest and easy going blissful moments I just never have here in the states. I will be going back. It was a completely therapeutic experience just to hang out with my good friend and not rush or hurry ta leave. Gemütlichkeit 100%...this was good for my soul and in my corner of heaven there is going to be a little of this going on. read more

Holy moly I CANNOT say enough good things about Augustiner-Keller! My husband and I are currently on a two week trip around Europe. Munich was our third stop. As I sit in our Paris hotel room I am STILL craving their food!!! We stopped in our first night in town. It is March, so it's COLD! We love walking (you see so much more of the city that way) so when we saw their building up ahead it was a lovely sight. Warm, inviting, amazing atmosphere. But the real winner is THE FOOD. Our second night we tried another (not so good --but surprisingly had similar reviews) restaurant. So, for our last night we made our Second trip to Augustiner-Keller. The atmosphere is a true beer hall, so we sat across from another older German couple. After getting over the strangeness of it, we found it quite fun! Good conversation despite the language barrier. The owner even walked around and introduced himself to us! Such a friendly and open atmosphere. We had the same meal, but added a little dessert. Their apple strudel was incredible. Definitely the best Bier Garten in Munich if you ask me. Nice day? Eat and drink to your heart's content outside under the trees... Want to experience it like the locals do and get away from the tourists? Go inside and walk down the windy (coil-shaped, not gusts of air) stairs into the brick laden tunnels underground...this is where the real fun is and much less English is spoken. You'll dance on your chairs and raise your glasses (if you can lift them high enough) to toast with some of Germany's most welcoming, fun-spirited citizens. Ask them what the words to the songs are so you can sing along with the live, authentic German music...I guarantee you'll have the time of your life. Try the half-beer, half-lemonade mix at least once...it is a very German thing, and I know what you're thinking...but it's awesome, trust me on that. If it's too sweet to continue, that's fine, switch back to regular beer, but you can at least say you've tried it. I mean, you are in Munich, right? Now walk out of the train station, turn right, and head down a block or three until you see the sign in the pictures... Within walking distance (15-20 mins) from the Hauptbahnhof in Central Munich, Augustiner-Keller provides delicious staples in the German cuisine without the hectic-ness of Oktoberfest. There is a indoor seating as well as a beer garden. We sat outside in the beer garden. We had the schnitzel, sausages with sauerkraut, and the knodel. All of the food was good and what you'd expect. The beer was good, naturally! The beer garden was PACKED, so service was a bit on the slow side - but I have to hand it to the waiter as he was the only one working the garden. We finished up with some tea and apple streudel with warm vanilla sauce. The streudel was very, very dry - old, maybe. I wasn't impressed. An amazing, authentic biergarten and hall. From the kind service to the free pretzels at the table, everything about his place says "willkimmon". If you're from out of town, you'll need to be comfortable with communal seating - although this is pretty common in Bavaria, in general. The beers were fantastic, but the food was the best I had in Munich. I'll never forget the Wiener schnitzel cooked in bacon grease and served with a fresh berry garnish. Stumbled into this one while walking around Munich looking for beer. Almost wandered out because I proclaimed it was too "themed" and "touristy". To which my husband told me I was an idiot and this is actually a German institution. I'm not even a beer person. But I flippin' loved my beer here. It was an unfiltered reddish beer (I'm not a beer person, okay???). Update: husband tells me it was a Heffeweisen. He had a pale lager. Mine was better. Went to other Munich breweries (Lowenbrau) and, later, Prague breweries and the beer here was hands down the best. Met a local who also named it his favorite. Also had a pork knuckle and duck leg confit. Pork knuckle was tough but hearty and tasty. Duck was pleasant but not the typical sweet and melt-in-your-mouth type that I'm used to. Overall, probably more impressed by the beer than the food, which has never happened to me before. read more

One of the must have experiences in Germany, if not all of Europe. This is the quintessential beer garden and had all the pleasures that it promises: great food, lively atmosphere, and friendly strangers/tourists from all over the world. First, the food is not only huge on portions (the pretzel was bigger than my face!) but also tasty. I remember a turkey leg 3 times the size of the ones at Disney with a huge pile of mashed potato next to it. The beer too were German sized and were one of the best beers I've ever had. I basically shuffled blindly through it all as a tourist but the line was very fast and I was able to get through holding the same orders as everyone else, as far as I can tell. Once we got the food, it was a bit difficult to find a seat since the place is very popular and thus crowded. However, we found a seat by the edge of the garden. The tables are rather long so while we took up one end of the table, a few guys sat at the other end. Once we say down, the other guys started talking to us and turns out, they were tourists from Finland! For the next 3 hours we spoke with them about all sorts of things and moved to a table in the center of the garden. Before I knew it, it was 10pm (which is when the garden closes) - the time had passed so fast with endless beer and good conversation. It really was one of the best experiences I've ever had and I would highly recommend anyone touring Europe to stop by! read more
