Eating outdoors in May at a beer garden in Bavaria what more can you ask for? The Radler beer/lemonade is amazing. It comes down real sweet and smooth with zero aftertaste. The edelstoff beer was fine. For food we had the The kasespatzle (buttery pasta without the butter), the brotzeit (combo plater of everything) all were good. The standout however is the haxnpfander. It's roast pork(crispy skin), veal, dumplings and sweet red cabbage. German cuisine at its best. Folks it's not just the food, it's the soccer fans attired in FC Bayern Munchen singing their hearts having a stein just before the match. I have this spot bookmarked but can't remember which food show featured it. We arrived around 9:30 on a Tuesday evening and they were busy. Biergarten/Rustic decor and loud/upbeat atmosphere where a big group could break out in song with raised glasses at any minute. We ended up sharing a table with another party of two who happened to be locals. It ended up being an even better evening as we had introductions and connected. We ordered, based on our server's recommendation, Augustiner Edelstoff (Lager). Very light/crisp and paired well with dinner. The Zwiebelrostbr (Grilled Sirloin Steak) was tender and tasty although some parts were over cooked -was supposed to be Medium). The side roasted potatoes were pure comfort-delicious! Nurnberger sausage plate was served on top of Sauerkraut. 6 sausages that were tasty and paired well with the abundant bed of Sauerkraut. Our neighbor advised me not to eat all of the huge portion of Sauerkraut-I wisely listened. The Kasespatzle was amazing! Just the right amount of cheese with the fried onions taking it over the top. We had a second round of Beer. This time a Dunkel (Red) and Weissbeer. Both were enjoyed but heavy when compared to the Lager. Our waiter brought out complimentary Pear Schnapps shots which was a nice touch. Prost! He was upbeat, engaged, having fun and took great care of us. We saw a huge outside seating area. This is the quintessential German brew house! It is also the oldest brewery in Munich, established in 1328 in a monastery. The Biergarten itself can seat 5,000. We arrived without a reservation but were seated on a shared table by the open kitchen right away. We ordered the Schweinshaxe or ham hock and Schmankerlplatte, a sampler plate with duck, sausage, roasted pork and duck. The meats were tender and delicious! Both came with a potato dumpling and cabbage. We also ordered Keller cheese, a combo of Camembert and cottage cheese. It comes with bread, a pretzel and pickled onions. But a meal here isn't complete without a glass of beer! There isn't a page of beers on draft. They have a dark, light or a beer shandy. I had the light, a wheat beer or Weissbier, which is easy to drink and a good accompaniment to this meal. Make sure to add this place to your itinerary on your next visit!! Prost!! read more

Location is not the most romantic, but they make the most of it behind its garden walls, making it both a very pretty beer garden and a restaurant should the weather not play along. The restaurant has outdoor serving too; this can be reservered, while beer gardens cannot. Being the prettiest beer garden within a larger vicinity - it's very popular, be there not too late. The restaurant food was good, but not super great -- it's clearly a place built around the priority of serving a lot of people quickly. Can't say we had high hopes for this touristy spot. The food is average for what it is, which is basic German. Service was the worst we had over the course of a 2-week Euro trip. The waiter seemed angry with everyone, wasn't attentive, charged us for an extra beer, and didn't let us review the check before paying. Then, he said to my husband "10% is okay?" referring to a tip that isn't customary. Awkward, and not deserved. The Wiener schnitzel was soggy. At least get that right. We felt we needed to check a box for German food, but I bet we could have found much better. Lesson learned. read more

Describing this place as a restaurant is like calling Disneyland an amusement park: technically true, but missing the point. This has enough outdoor seating to accommodate a small village, plus indoor seating in a variety of rooms, each with their own character. There are reserved named tables for the regulars. There's a playground for the kids outside. It's open on holidays such as Whit Monday and Corpus Christi. Recommend the Edelstoff for anyone that enjoys a lager. Food options vary based on the day. Great spot!! we are visiting from San Diego and found this restaurant on yelp. It was within walking distance to our hotel and we didn't feel like going downtown again. Fun big Hall. Came here for our first beer and pretzel in Germany. The beer was nice, but the pretzel was hard and I was hoping it would be soft. We also shared a Weinerschnitzel, which was pretty good. The staff sat us very quickly at a table upstairs with one of the best views of the restaurant. Our server was really friendly and took pictures of us and took us to the underground cellar room so we could see what that was like. This room was charming. One of the most famous bier halls/restaurants in all of Munich. Literally serves thousands and thousands of people a month and our reserved dining experience was 100% a failure. Our waiter was attentive at first and then after we ordered our entries we just sat, we watched everyone that arrived after us get their meals... nothing. We tried to get his attention but that was nearly impossible. After 45 minutes of nothing I asked, what turned out to me the manager, for some assistance. He asked our waiter what was going on. Not sure what they said to each other as I don't speak German well. He took our orders, two of the same meal and two different meals. The four meal arrived fairly quickly. He admitted he forgot to out the order in. When the food arrived two of the four meals was incorrect. Has we not had that waiter our experience would have been outstanding, the food and beers were very good. The atmosphere is amazing and a very cool experience. Maybe next time but given it's Munich and they have several famous bier halls there probably won't be a next time. read more

Wow! I think this is a fitting way to start out on this review. This place is overwhelming. Not in a bad way, but in a way that you just have to go in prepared. With seating for over 5000 people you can become overwhelmed with the sheer magnitude of tables, people, and noise. And we were lucky enough to hit it right at the peak! ( yikes) We first stopped by the host desk. He asked if we had a reservation, which we did not. So he said we could find a table outside. We walked around for a good 10 minutes, looking for a place to sit with a party of four and mistakenly sat in a drinking zone that was self service. We wanted to get drinks and dinner. So really at this point we were giving up and going to find something else, when we just happened upon an open table on our way out in the food zone. So we nabbed it. The wait staff here is absolutely amazing. The amount of beers that they can carry in one hand is superhuman. They are also covering a large territory of tables and do it extremely well. We ordered drinks and food at the same time. The drinks came out all together, but when our food came, one of the meals was on a delay for some reason, and arrived about 10 minutes after our food was there. But we were having fun drinking and chatting with neighboring tables. Everybody was there just to have a good time. So I guess to summarize, just be prepared for the sheer magnitude of this beer garden. And once you have that frame of mind, your maneuver through it the best you can. read more

I came to this place lunch and dinner for 3 days straight to sample weisswurst, Munchen schnitzel. Mixed grill with duck, schweinebraten, schweinehaxe, and a Nurnberg bratwurst served with dunked bier brown gravy and a potato dumpling. In terms of vegetarian options...there's the Kazespatzle, some salads, and I think one other dish so not too many options :( The Kazespatzle comes with a side salad that wasn't too impressive. The obvious problem is that you don't feel welcomed... it's like the Hofbrauhaus.The waiters have this F U attitude that you need them and you'll wait for your mediocre meal. They know that most people will only be there once in their lives.. so deal with it. Very unfortunate for everyone. I sincerely recommend going to a local restaurant without the hype. I'm going to be honest with you, I don't know how much of this review will be accurate because I came here after a few hours at the Octoberfest tents. I had quite the buzz and I wanted to keep it going by checking out one of the older establishments in Munich. So in my mildly inebriated state, I was able to enjoy another pint here, some pig knuckle, some schnitzel and blintzes (dessert). The food itself was, forgettable other than the dessert. I remember vaguely really enjoying the dessert. I also of course enjoyed the beer. I did walk around the place and it is quite impressive. Lots of room to host lots of people. The journey to find the restrooms was fun because you had to traverse down some stairs into what I thought felt was suppose to be a place that would be a cellar of some sort. So I really wanted to check this place out because of its history and it did not disappoint in that aspect. I really wish I could give you a more detailed account of my experience here but in all honesty it was a bit of a blur, but I was able to safely survive it with a smile on my face when I left so cheers to that. My personal favorite dinner during my Germany travels. The servers were nice here and we were seated right away at the restaurant area. Beer options include a house beer, Weiss, plenty of non alcoholic drinks as well. There's a large beer garden area as well with cafeteria style food and drinks section. At the restaurant we ordered a cordon bleu dinner, which came with a large portion of pork cordon bleu, fries, half a peach, cranberry, lettuce garnish. I had the pumpkin soup and salad. Everything was excellent. The cordon bleu was very cheesy, tender, and the fries were crisp and lightly salted. The dressing for the salad was delicious and came with fresh butter lettuce, potato salad, tomato wedges. The pumpkin soup was very tasty as well and had a nice curry drizzle on top that added a tasty layer of spices. I would highly recommend coming here for dinner. Augustine Keller is one of the oldest and largest beer gardens in Munich. It has seating for 5,000 people. It is definitely an impressive and pretty restaurant. I understand German service might not be as attentive as American service, but the servers were quite distant and aloof. They serve traditional Bavarian food. I ordered roasted pork in dark beer gravy, with a potato dumpling, and cabbage salad. Although, the food was tasty, it was not my favorite meal. I did, however, love their beer offerings. The massive Augustiner Beer Garden is super popular among locals and features a huge complex full of people enjoying drinks under the shade of trees. The food here was standard beer garden fare, and we had the Schweinshaxe (crispy pork knuckle) served with a chewy potato dumplings and beer sauce; 6 little Nürnberger sausages with sauerkraut; a Greek salad (cucumbers, peppers, olives, and feta cheese); and a huge salted pretzel. The quality of the food was rather average--the pork knuckle was fatty and slightly tough, and many of the other items were overly salty. But I was a big fan of the Steckerlfisch stand, which offered whole mackerels grilled on a stick and sold by weight. The freshly-grilled fish had a nice salty exterior and meaty texture and was delicious all on its own. And while the food here may not have been a highlight, the lively atmosphere created by the beer-drinking locals certainly was! read more

Great place to come and enjoy a beer and some snacks when visiting Munich. It's pretty much an outdoor park with a large amount out picnic tables and regular tables to sit out. There was a reserved seating and unreserved seating section with a small building for indoor seating. You can order from a server or if you're in the unreserved section you walk up to the pavilion to order your food. They have a food & beer line or a beer only line so things move pretty quick. The area has quite a few trees so it's nice to sit down and enjoy the day. 100% would suggest coming back. Only negative would be that during big events it can get busy so be prepared for a large crowd. read more

My favorite Bräuhaus in Germany, been here a few times, always solid, addicting. The Lager Keller had private events going on, since it was Christmas time, but the bar area was fun, great conversation with people from all over the world. Follow Arnulfstrasse About a quarter mile west of the train station and you'll come to a fairly non-descript archway entrance to Augustiner Keller beer garden. Inside is almost a whole city block under chestnut trees packed with tables of people enjoying brews. Our group of 6 was looking a little confused about how to get a table when a waiter took us under his wing. The liter mugs of beer were great, and the gals enjoyed "ratler", a mix of lemonade and beer. Our hesitancy about German food vanished when the plates arrived. The owner and his wife dropped by the table and shared some of the history and traditions of the place. Our table was "owned" by a group of railway track workers that convene every Wednesday. Every other day of the week, it was available for all. There were many tables like that, all owned by local groups. When we mentioned that we were heading on to Passau, he recommended a restaurant there, which was also a good find. This was a great ending to our first day in Munich. It was a no-brainer to return again the next evening. We did not explore the indoor venues, which may be necessary on rainy days. read more
