    The view from the porch

This was a wonderful experience for my husband and I. We decided to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary in Ft. Walton Beach at Aunt Martha's. We arrived after a long (8 hour) drive and was welcomed with a sweet note taped to the door explaining where the key was and specific details about coffee, soda, water and breakfast. I should mention that when we arrived, it was July 4. We went up to our room, the Sunflower room, but the key was not there. We went back downstairs and one of the young ladies in the kitchen (Aunt Martha's daughter's best friend) took us to Martha to get our key. She apologized and welcomed us to the B&B. It was a typical country welcome-warm and friendly. When we got into our room, I was delighted! It was a sweet, warm room with hardwood floors, a beautiful view and an impeccably clean bathroom. We wondered around a bit and my husband was very excited about the candy that could be found in each room. We got a special surprise when we walked out back around 8:30 pm and found that we were in the perfect place to view fireworks. It was a spectacular display and lasted for at least 15 minutes. Beautiful! I had heard in other reviews that the beds were hard. The bed was a little firm for my husband but perfect for me. I slept like a baby. He did too, he just prefers a softer bed. So, if you enjoy firmer beds, you will be pleased. The next morning, we were welcomed by the smell of coffee and breakfast. This was seriously the BEST COFFEE I HAVE EVER HAD. It was delicious. Martha, Bill, her daughter and grand-daughter were in the kitchen when we ventured in for coffee. We had a few questions and Bill graciously answered, as did the daughter. Martha even gave us the name of a wonderful local pizza joint (Helen Back) which was right on the water. The breakfast was perfect-something for everyone. The french toast was wonderful. Martha definitely puts out a good spread. They also have kayaks that guests can take out on the intercoastal (the B&B is about 5-7 minutes from the beach. We had a lot of fun with that. :) I had heard that you get 5% of your bill if you pay cash, which we did. It was a wonderful stay-a memorable anniversary. We definitely want to visit this B&B again.

This place is a gem. Great breakfast and breath taking view at the dock. Great getaway bed and breakfast.

Room smelled like dead fish. No soundproofing between rooms. Broken a/contests unit covered in nasty stuff. Cracked bathtub. Hairs and stains in bedding on arrival. Hairs in shower on the wall. Wifi was the worst I have ever encountered. 2MBP/s. Our mobile hotspot was way faster. I think our dial up was faster in 2004.. Surfaces and floor clearly weren't cleaned. Most likely for a long, long time judging by the inch+ or so of grime on them. Hotel staff did nothing to make it right. Active duty military, Valentine's Day weekend. We rarely get to take time for ourselves and this was HOURS of searching to choose this hotel. It's been a nightmare. Satisfaction guarantee? NOPE. Corporate said they can't do anything! People are also blatantly smoking marijuana in the hallway. Update: Tiki bar is also closed!! Restaurant refused to feed our kids claiming they ONLY served the $90 Valentine Special. The Restaurant was completely empty. Entire hotel was a ghost town. They were not "fully booked", they were only booking 2 floors because the rest were under construction. There were a maximum of 5 people in the restaurant morning, noon, and night. Indoor pool totally empty. Only saw one person outside by the fires, a single elderly woman. The place was abandoned despite advertising fully booked. I checked out 2 days early. Don't go here if you value your time at all. We called corporate and spoke to the manager downstairs. She told us only the general manager could do anything and he conveniently would not be there until the day we were scheduled to check out. Corporate told us only the general manager could do anything also and they could not, would not, do anything.

Special shout-out to Orlando for his terrific blackened mahi mahi - superb!!! All resort staff were friendly and accommodating. As a wheelchair user, I particularly appreciated access to a beach wheelchair - at no cost! One suggestion, coming from a wheelchair user - please note that when a person is seated on the shower bench, the dispensers for body wash, shampoo, and conditioner are out of reach. I suspect that should be fairly simple to correct. Otherwise, great resort!

However our bathroom definitely needed some upgrades. The bottom of the tub had stains in it and the toilet seat needed to be replaced. The hand soap and lotion dispenser was broken and needed to be replaced as well. Unfortunately, the WiFi was slow and only worked in certain areas of our room. The microwave had to be replaced twice because it stopped working initially (it was overheating and something was going on with the breaker) then the staff brought us another one that turned on but didn't warm up the food. So finally the 3rd microwave worked properly. Unfortunately, you do have to pay for breakfast ($18-$20), but if you stay at the Hilton Garden Inn next door, they have free breakfast.

The next morning I asked for room service to clean the room because our toddler got poop on the sheets and they forgot to do our room. I had to change our sheets and clean. It took 3 weeks to talk to a manager and they notified me there was nothing they could do for us. We've stayed here twice before and never experienced something this bizarre. Not a single employee in sight. I had to walk into the back office yelling for help like it ghost town In their office. I called and emailed every manager listed and absolutely NO response. after a few time walking behind the desk and in the back offices, I found the owner's personal number in the back office and called him. No answer. To top it off, there was NO WiFi, NO working TV channels, and the screen literally just said "OFF THE AIR." The place is falling apart and no one seems to care. Guests were walking in looking just as confused and abandoned as I felt. Not a single staff member around to assist anyone. This place shouldn't even be allowed to operate. It's a disgrace to hospitality. DO NOT STAY HERE under ANY circumstances. Spend your money literally anywhere else.

Over all, we would stay here again because of the cleanliness, friendliness of staff, convenience of in house restaurant, food truck, outdoor bars and two pools as an option, and walking distance to four other restaurants and souvenir shops and the location was perfect! Everyone has expectations of their own in how they "think" places to stay should be, but, there again, we were very fortunate to be able to book this place and would stay here again. Cons: 1. Did not know that they would put a hold of 445.00 on our credit card for any other charges 2. Phone in room did not work the whole time we were there and notified staff 3. Air conditioner would not go below 68 for sleep and when you were there it would heat up to 74 and very humid in the room as well. 4. Washer Dryer only takes credit cards and not cash 5. Could not check out on the TV as indicated ( really not a big deal, but would have been a convenient factor) 6. Check out was another surprise of $16 for parking plus tax and $29 plus tax for entertainment provided (we did not use the entertainment, but was still charged for this)

The only area that appeared updated was the remodeled section, which seemed to be reserved for guests without children and/or guests who did not book through a third-party site. Our room did not have a beach view, despite the overall impression that the property offers that type of experience. The refrigerator barely kept items cold, and the beds were advertised as queens but felt like full-size beds at best. There was also no elevator, which made it difficult to carry multiple bags and a cooler up to our second-floor room. This was especially frustrating when traveling with children. On top of that, there was a parking fee of $17 plus tax per night and a resort fee of $32 plus tax per night. I am honestly not sure what the resort fee was supposed to cover because we did not feel like we received any resort-level amenities or experience. The positives were that the resort is next to the pier, which was convenient, and it was not too far from the Gulfarium. Unfortunately, those positives did not make up for the condition of the room, the motel-like atmosphere, lack of elevator access, or the added fees. I would not stay here again unless major updates and cleanliness improvements are made.
