It was Katie's, and then Katie's moved upstairs, which granted that space available for Boscov's to move in and take reign of the Piedmont Mall once and for all. Until its eventual downfall in 2012. I guess it heard the end of the world was coming and decided to get on out before the going got tuff. Anyway, Dunham's doesn't really do it for me as pretzel joint. I've been to Katie's Pretzels when it moved upstairs into a little space on the corner across from Belk: my favorite location of them all in the Piedmont Mall. Here is where Katie's Pretzels really came into their own. I mean - WHAAT a location!! This ensured I would visit a part of the Piedmont Mall I would never have traversed otherwise. What even IS Belk ?! But all of the wonders of Katie's Pretzels could not have prepared me for what they would enact - and rightfully deserve - next: a name change. Monk's. Monk's Pretzels is a step into nirvana. Babylon. Pure, unadulterated bliss. A name change in conjunction with the name change of the Piedmont Mall to the Danville Mall. This is pure power, folks. It was a nice visit and we had four burgers and nachos with chicken for 4 adults, 2 children. Atmosphere was nice, we checked out a couple of the big beer vats. They appeared hard at work making beer. The waitress was nice, helpful on the menu items. When we got the bill, she told us she had automatically added a large group 20% gratuity. I believe the menu said parties of 8 or more are charged 20% gratuity, but I did not push this and actually added a little more. The visit was really good--4 stars and the status of the restaurant should be changed to open in Yelp.

The brewery was easy to find and we originally thought it was housed inside an old school building but later learned it was previously a health services building. In addition to AFOG, there are also residential apartments in the remaining adjoining part of the building. There is a large outdoor area where a birthday celebration was happening amongst a small group. We proceeded inside and were immediately greeted by Sam. She helped me identify the IPA options and i immediately chose their Millennial Serum, which is a hazy imperial style that I enjoy. We looked around a bit, snapped some photos and looked at their swag. I'm a big tie dye guy and I was happy to see they had a great selection of AFOG tie dye shirts in my size. We decided to sit at the bar while I enjoyed my beer and chatted about our day. We also enjoyed talking with Sam and learning more about the brewery. We learned they are soon opening their second location in Buchanan, Virginia.
