Hammond's Pretzel Bakery is a historic pretzel bakery that opened in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in…read more1931. It was founded by baker William Lichty and his grandfather William Hammond. At the height of the Great Depression, Lichty had an idea to open his own pretzel bakery. He enlisted the help of Hammond: his grandfather and next-door-neighbor. Hammond had worked as a pretzel baker in the 1800s and brought with him an excellent recipe for sourdough pretzels. They set up shop in their adjoining garages, where the pretzels were rolled by hand and baked in a brick oven. Other family members soon came on board to assist in the operation. Lichty's daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Tom Nicklaus, took over the business in the 1970s. Today it is run by their son and daughter Brian Nicklaus and Karen Achtermann. Hammond's Pretzel Bakery is the oldest continuously family-operated handmade pretzel bakery in the United States. Still operating in the same location, and still rolling pretzels by hand, Hammond's bakes 1,500 pounds of pretzels on a daily basis. My family and I recently visited Hammond's Pretzel Bakery while we were traveling through Pennsylvania's Lancaster County. The area may be known for its rich Pennsylvania Dutch culture, but it's also known for its rich pretzel history and production. It just so happens that pretzels are my favorite snack! The bakery has a small retail shop for customers to buy pretzel products directly. It smelled amazing when we walked in. We also enjoyed watching the freshly-baked pretzels coming out on the conveyor belt. Hammond's produces a large variety of pretzel snacks: the most popular are their classic old-fashioned sourdough pretzels which come packaged in an iconic five pound orange-and-green can. We decided to stock up on multiple flavor varieties to snack on while we were on the road, including: "Buffalo Ranch", "Dill Pickle", "Garlic Herb", "Cinnamon Sugar", and "Chocolate Covered Clusters". They were all delicious! We don't get to Pennsylvania often, but I think it's safe to say that we'll be ordering more pretzel products from Hammond's online store in the future!

The pretzels from the oven come out right there in the gift shop on the conveyor belt. They even gave us a fresh pretzel off the line. So delicious! I bought about $20.00 worth of pretzels for family and friends back home in AZ/CA. The 2 ladies in the shop were very kind and helpful. They even gave us the tip to look in the 3 back windows of the building on the way out. We did, and we saw about 10 people hand rolling pretzels. YES....they hand roll each (big) pretzel. What attention to detail! Simply amazing. Must stop if you are back in Central PA.

The line goes fast and you get to watch the employees make the pretzels as you wait. They have the whole process down to an art! It's fun to watch how quickly they can twist a pretzel. The original pretzel with salt is a great snack. Salty and extremely buttery. It has a slightly crispy outside with a warm soft and fluffy inside. A delicious combination! I always mean to try the other pretzel flavors (like the cinnamon and sour cream and onion) but I know the original is so good that I think "why ruin a good thing?" I have tried their ham and cheese stuffed pretzel. I always ask them to add salt to mine and they do. (It does not need salt, it's salty enough but that's just a preference.) The ham and cheese stuffed is so delicious and I've grabbed it a few times for a quick lunch. Very satisfying. I'm originally from closer to Philly. Philadelphia pretzels are great and I grew up eating them, but these pretzels beat them every day of the week (in my opinion!) Yum!

They are consistently soft, salty, just a little sweet, and overall a buttery goodness. The original salt soft pretzel is a great go-to. I opted for the no salt pretzel, but I want to go back for thr classic! I tried the sour cream and onion flavored one as well, which was also tasty. Nothing beats the original pretzel, though.

The steaks were okay -- they seemed tough and mine, for medium seemed slightly over cooked with hardly any pink inside and what there was was very light pinkish / brown color. Jenni said her steak was done to her satisfaction -- medium well. I would say mine was probably also medium well. My steak had a lot of fat and gristle that I didn't eat. The mashed potatoes were amazing. My asparagus seemed stingy in size and number of stalks and added little taste or filling to my plate. Jenni said her green beans were okay. The iced tea was great. My Pepsi didn't taste flavorful though Alyssa said she checked the soda bags and they were full. I swapped for sweetened ice tea. Alyssa was a super friendly server who checked on us regularly. We want to patronize local businesses but we probably wouldn't get our meals again and would try something else. Jenni said she'd rate our experience as a 2.5 which is exactly what I'd give so we're going to round up since maybe our experience was just a little off this evening.

The rice was severely undercooked, and although the menu advertised tiger shrimp, the shrimp served were much smaller than the tiger shrimp I've had at other restaurants. The portion and quality simply didn't justify the price. The service was even more disappointing. We were a party of 17, and it felt like our table was an inconvenience. I personally asked for water three separate times and still never received it. No one at the table had their glasses refilled. There was little to no initiative to check on our table, refill drinks, or make sure we had what we needed. Instead, it felt like our server was rushing us through the meal. I understand that serving a large party can be challenging, but if one server wasn't comfortable handling a group of this size, they should have asked for assistance from other staff. Large parties deserve attentive service just like any other table. Overall, the combination of overpriced, underwhelming food and poor service made for a very disappointing experience. Unfortunately, I wouldn't return or recommend this restaurant based on this visit.
