We stopped by on a Sunday night for drinks and loved the selection of creative and thoughtful cocktails, at reasonable prices. Service was quick and we enjoyed sitting at the bar. $2 Wells on Wednesday?!?!?!?! Say less! We were visiting from California and a couple of locals recommended that we check out Auntie Mae's. So happy that we took their suggestion. You can't beat $2 wells! A couple of my friends got mocktails and they said that they were also delicious. The bartender was super nice! I wish I had gotten his name. Really knowledgeable and helped us pick out some cocktails. They even make their own cherry syrup there. You have to go downstairs to get to this bar. It's cool and dark down there. I kinda loved it. 9:00 pm: Manhattan, KS It may have been getting late, but hey, this was downtown Manhattan. So we swung by Auntie Mae's Parlor for an after-dinner drink. This place looked so promising online: "The best bar in Manhattan, KS," "The best cocktails in the area," and "I didn't expect to find a bar this cool in this town." So much so that I was really looking forward to having a Manhattan in Manhattan (get it!?). You enter a well appointed room with a pool table, then take the stairs down to a dark, low ceilinged bar that has personality. The place has rustic vibe which when combined with the extensive liquor inventory that is displayed under a mounted gar says "Salud!" And it went down hill from there and fast. I didn't get a good mixology vibe when the "bartender" mentioned under her breath that this was "the first Manhattan I've ever made." I might not have heard her except I was focused on her technique when I noticed she was haltingly making my cocktail . . . off an index card. The crushed ice and orange curacao didn't help. The Subscriber who was accompanying me on this Great Plains adventure wisely ordered Old Forrester on the rocks, but the bourbon to glass to rock ratio was so out of whack, his drink looked a giant sphere of ice resting in a splash of bourbon. The fact that I couldn't review the bill without first paying and that Mrs. AAR's Baileys on the rocks was actually made with a Bailey's facsimile (Schmaileys?) made it all so surreal. If you must visit . . . under threat of violence, order bourbon . . . neat. The second star is for the ambiance. read more

The best bar in Manhattan, KS. There, I said it. The fact that I graduated college when anticipated is still a mystery to me, as I lived two blocks for Mae's during my final year at K-State. For the most part, the staff and clientele here are a little older and alternative - in the best possible way. Everyone is super friendly. Drinks are cheap (I'm looking at you, PBR cans) and strong if you opt for something mixed. There's a pool table up top if you want to play a game or two - the bar keeps quarters stocked, making it easy to swap out your cash. If you wander to the basement, the vibe is even cozier and there's a photo booth to commemorate your visit to MHK, or just another night of adventures with friends. Grab a booth if there's one open, and don't let it go! Check out the events Mae's hosts - they used to have a poetry slam during the week (highly recommend) and are always bringing in live music. read more

This bar is really cool except the bouncers are beyond rude. A lady named sam came and sat by our table to "ensure" that we knew "they were closed". The time was 1:45 am. It is established, based on their website, that they close at 2 am. It is one thing to make a last call, but to stand over a patron before closing is not only horrible service, but a great way to ensure people don't come back. Must be horrible management to allow these jerks to work at this establishment. read more

Love this place! On Saturdays they have a double Bloody Mary special for $5...yes please! The bartender was super helpful at recommending restaurants we could check out, which I thought was awesome. They don't have food here, but you can bring food from nearby places like Pita Pit. I just loved the vibe here - dark, parlor style interior with interesting bartenders. The bloodies had housemade pickles and a homemade mix. Super fun place with a relaxing atmosphere and really good craft cocktails, without feeling like a pretentious cocktail bar. Auntie Mae's Parlor is one of the better bars in Aggieville. It's a cool setting with a nice basement that often hosts live music. There is usually a cover on nights with live music, but it's never very high and is fun to see music in Manhattan as there isn't a lot of live music around here. The must-have drink is called the tarantula. It's really strong, but tastes good and relatively inexpensive for the amount of liquor. I visited Auntie Maes several years ago with some friends that lived in Manhattan, prior to that I'd heard of it as sort of a local legend (when I attended KSU but was too young to drink). Recently my brother and I went there while in town to hang out. I went in intending to only drop in for an hour before heading to our hotel for an early morning, we ended up shutting the place down. The place is a perfect example of what to expect in a bar. They have the local brew (Tallgrass ale) on tap, the atmosphere is authentic, and the lighting is perfect for an intimate party setting. I'm definitely not what you'd call a socialite, but while there I made some friends just from hanging out for an evening. Although now based in Wichita, if I lived in Manhattan, I would probably end up calling Auntie Mae's home. read more

Yes, it's a dungeon. It's a take-it-or-leave-it kind of place. Excellent jukebox - kudos for marching to a better beat! I love the happy hour tacos - cheap and hit the spot. Good selection of beer and liquor. Grungy, dark and fun - if you dont like any of those 3 attributes - dont go! Dont be surprised if you see Willy Wildcat whip through here and show-off his 'guns' or the marching band's impromptu takeover of the bar. This place is one of the real classics of Aggieville. The basement area feels like a real speakeasy, and has some really great bands that will come play now and then (check out the posters, which are always vintage looking and really cool). The staff is always friendly, and the place is full of interesting characters...the good kind. Also, they often have firkins from Tallgrass Brewing Company of some experimental and fun beers that they sell until the keg runs out. There are pool tables on the main floor, but to really get the Auntie Mae's experience you need to be downstairs. I've been going to this place since 1989. Every few years I'll pop in just for nostalgia. Always really loved it. Probably always will. I'm a bit older and I'm not the college crowd, admittedly, So maybe I'm just not used to how bartenders treat patrons. There are two types of bartenders: Bartenders that think that they are there for the customer and then there are bartenders who think you are there for them. It would appear that our bartender last night was the latter of the two. Probably one of the most unfriendly, unwelcoming servers I've ever encountered in any bar of any kind. If I walked in that place again tomorrow and she was bartending I would turn around and leave. I hope that whoever reads this takes it to heart and addresses the problem with the bartender last night. She was the one with the brunette hair. Auntie Mae's is hard to describe. It's a hole in the wall, mostly in a dark basement, with occasional live bands. Sounds kind of scary. It's also one of the friendliest, coolest bars in Aggieville. This may surprise some, but it's pretty popular with the local gay and lesbian community. It's not remotely a "gay" bar, just very friendly and open to all. When you walk in, don't be put off by what you see. Grab a stool, start chatting with your neighbor and you'll probably have a great time. read more

Fun bar, especially on winter weekends. The underground bar part has a really cool atmosphere and it is always one of the "signature" Manhattan places we take our visiting friends. The bartenders that I've had are always willing to make any drink you can think of and they have a decent selection of beer, especially Tallgrass! The only downside is that it is small and gets busy really quick. You have to get there early in the evening to get a good seat. read more

I really liked this spot. Seems like a good college hangout bar. They have good strong drinks, a pool table, and I like the saloon feel to it. Very divey. I wish the upstairs was more spacious especially near the pool table. The table feels kinda crammed by tables and the wall on one side. The basement of Auntie Mae's is a very cool and unique atmosphere unlike anything you'll find in Manhattan currently. The booths, low lighting, and strong drinks (tarantula, supposedly the strongest drink in Aggieville) make for a good time.
