Highly recommend using Aurora Painting for exterior house painting. This is the third consecutive time that Aurora has painted the exterior of our 1906 Arts & Crafts 2-story clapboard house. The previous job was 18 years ago. A few of the same craftsmen returned for this refresh! We feel proud about the quality and efficiency of their work. Quickly, we reached terms after consulting on open questions and massaging the scope to fit our budget. Aurora was not the cheapest bid, yet we feel that, at the end of the 11-day work effort, the result is fair value. There were no surprises, unless one counts the 3 days delay due to rain. The crew was a delight to have on site 8:00-4:00, leaving the work areas cleared, cleaned, and their supplies tucked out of the way each work day. After prep work was completed, and previously unknown wood repairs identified, Aurora arranged for an affiliated carpenter crew to expertly make those repairs on a Saturday. Aurora painted the walls of three rooms, and restored extensive woodwork, in my 1908 Craftsman. Plaster walls, box beams, the fireplace -- everything was handled perfectly. Dean matched the color of the existing wood on the dining room hutch, and picked a trim color to go with that. It looks wonderful: warm and rich but without entirely erasing a century of history. Dean's color consultant, Samantha Moss, helped me pick paint colors that I am very happy with. The job started and ended on time, came in on budget, and the workmanship is superb. We really wanted a quality job in repainting the exterior of our home. We had five companies come out do to estimates and Dean and his crew at Aurora Painting and Decorating was the easy choice. One company came out for an estimate but never actually provided the estimate. I received four written estimates and could tell by the attention to detail in the estimate that I could count on Aurora to deliver. Many items in the proposal were very specific to what was needed on my home, how each surface would be prepared and finished. Other proposals were very boiler plate like "prep and finish all wood surfaces." We had a fantastic crew led by foreman José along with Raul and Pedro. The attention to detail was incredible, they worked extremely hard and cleaned up the work areas at the end of each day. This review is almost a year late, and for that I apologize to Dean and the team here - they really deserve the business! Dean Byington, the color consultant he has on staff, (Max?) and the painting teams he has working for him do outstanding work at a reasonable price. They were lower than the other quotes I received from two other painters in SF and the East Bay. I have no issues with the work that was performed, and I get compliments on the work from neighbors and guests all the time. It has weathered well - looks like it was just painted yesterday. Prep work was great, they finished in a timely manner, and the workers even worked Saturday for a little overtime on a couple occasions, or brought someone from a different team to finish on time. Great painters. They'll help you get exactly the right color, especially with the grayish green I went with (Caldwell Green, Benjamin Moore, and a few of the other complementary colors) and steer you away from poor color choices but will still listen to your input. Aurora Painting painted my first house maybe ten years ago now, I'm in my second house now, but the last of I've seen of it, it still looks great. There are many painting contractors to choose from, but the nice thing about working with Dean, the company's owner, is you tend to have a professional and personal relationship with him - he's always available, can answer your questions and make sure you're making the right choices. He runs tight crews and they simply do a good job, and one that will last. Cost? I'd say they lie reasonably in the middle - personally I'd be wary of lowball painting bids as they'd result in skimping on prep and labor or materials, or both. Now here's the full disclosure. I'm a shingle siding contractor and have worked with Dean on a fair amount of other projects as well. I've been in the business almost 20 years and if needed, can find no shortage of other painters I've worked with on projects and plenty of references for painters from the general contractors and architects I've worked with as well.. But I like Dean and the crew's work - they do a great, solid professional job at fair pricing (remember, you get what you pay for) and Dean's a good guy and super easy to work with. If you only need two words: Highly Recommended The first things I appreciated about Dean when I first met him was that he was on time and that he did as he said he would. These are two very simple, very important and sometimes hard to find qualities. Everything that he explained from the beginning made sense and was presented in a professional manner. When he brought me my estimate, he also provided the addresses of other homes like mine he had worked on and I was able to look at them. Additionally I was able to read reviews from past clients and even talk to past clients who all had great things to say. When it came time to the start date, the crew arrived on time and was very friendly and efficient. I appreciated them honoring my request to have shoes either covered or off while in my home. Throughout the job, Dean was very good about checking in to let me know what was happening and also was quick to respond if I had any questions. We definitely recommend Aurora Painting. Dean and his team were referred to us by our architect/contractor when we bought our house in the Elmwood at the beginning of the year. On the inside, we had the team strip all of the decades-old wallpaper and cloth from the lath and plaster walls and repaint them. Later on during the project, we power washed our shingle exterior and repainted the trim. The work was impeccable: the walls of our house are lovely. Guests consistently ask if the striping job Dean's team did in our entry hall is wallpaper. Our neighbors assumed that we re-shingled the house when in fact all we did was have Dean power wash and treat the existing shingles. Our neighbors also comments on the quality of the workmanship since they are retired and were home to watch all the work. The Aurora team was professional and responsive. Dean was very customer service-oriented: issues we pointed out (such as touch ups) were attended to promptly; vague areas in the contract were resolved in our favor. Because of the amount of work we were doing, Aurora had to weave their work in with other contractors: we had a separate designer picking colors, we redid the floors throughout the house, replaced the foundation and a roof and deck. We moved to Berkeley from SF in November of 2011 and decided to remodel the new home that we bought. The many projects took us about eight months from start to finish and were full of negative contractor drama. One of the very few positive things that came as a result of working with the contractor that we did was the connection to Aurora Painting and Decorating. Aurora came into our home following a kitchen and dining room remodel. And they did a fantastic job painting both the kitchen and dining room. The crew was so professional and nice that we decided to consider Aurora to do the exterior painting of our entire house. - Our house is a bungalow that was built in 1940. A cute house from a design standpoint, but the sellers who sold us the house had painted it a seriously ugly shade of brown that even the neighbors on the block found to be heinous. Besides the fact that the color was bad, the quality of the paint work was just plain awful; As if a child did it. And there were a lot of small areas on the exterior body of the stucco that had chips missing, etc. The exterior surfaces were very inconsistent. Needless to say, we didn't buy the house for the paint job. We called Dean, the owner of the Aurora, and he provided us with a clear and concise estimate of the work to be done. The estimate was fair and competitive to that of exterior painting estimates that we had received on homes that we have owned and had painted in San Francisco. The estimate was also inclusive of necessary resurfacing work that would be done prior to the painting itself. We asked Dean, the owner, if we could have the same crew of workers that did our interior work, do the exterior work, and he said yes, but that they were very busy at the time and we had to wait a while until their schedules cleared. Not a problem. Our crew; Martin, Victor, and Jose are FANTASTIC. Seriously, these guys are IT when it comes to paint crews. Granted, we don't know all of the other crew members of Aurora, and we're told they're all wonderful. But these guys are indeed World-Class at what they do. They arrive on-time, every day. They work with excellent ethics. They have great manners and they treat our property with great respect. I write this in the present tense because they are working on our home as I type [today is the last day of the job.] Work began this last Tuesday, the 9th of July, and the crew spent three full days protecting our property, sanding, re-stuccoing, and re-surfacing the entire exterior of the house. Followed by priming every surface and then painting. They continued to resurface the exterior of the house even during the painting process. Being very thorough, going back and rechecking their work. The resurfacing work that they have done really shows and alters the appearance of the house for the better. The house looks *much* newer than it did prior to their beginning work on it. Dean and the crew answered all questions and concerns that we had about the work, as the job progressed, and saw to it that any issues or changes that we needed to make, were made without hesitation. The end result is that we got our house resurfaced and painted the way we wanted it to be. The place looks great. We can't recommend this company highly enough. They will be our 'go-to' painters from here on out. Love 'em! This was our second major project with Aurora. The first was an exterior job and it lasted so well that we didn't seriously consider using anyone else to do this project--the entire interior and exterior of our extensively remodeled 3-storey house in Oakland. When we started construction we contacted Dean to make sure to get on his schedule, and he saved us a time slot with the crew (he has 4) that he thought would be the best match for the job, which included a new roof terrace & porch and a new bath & dressing room. The job was complicated with some "unique" structural elements and construction schedule slips which meant that Dean's crew had to work in less-than-ideal conditions. Martin, Victor, and Jose handled the challenges with grace and good humor, and they were very hard-working and pleasant to have around. Dean was great about explaining what needed to be done and making suggestions about materials and methods to make the finishes last longer. He's completely involved with every aspect of the job and is great at communicating--by email, phone, or in person--throughout the entire job. I used to be a project manager myself, and I appreciate his being on top of things at all times. The prep on the job was good, therefore the 2 stars. However, after the painting was finished, a white film appeared on many of the surfaces, which I was promised would be wiped away in a timely fashion. Months later, no one has appeared to do this. There are two windows that have been painted shut. They opened and closed easily before the job, but after prying open one of them, and no being able to close it again, I was told by the owner of Aurora that it is a window problem and I should contact a window company. Meanwhile, the dried paint is bunched up on the window and on the frame, and is obstructing the window closure. Very frustrating to get nowhere with Aurora about this issue they caused. I'm thinking of contacting the state licensing board. read more

I've had two separate painting projects done in my home by Dean and his crew, and I can't imagine ever hiring anyone else. Beautiful, beautiful work, and such a considerate crew throughout the process. First project was actually a few years ago, removing old wallpaper from my 1890 Victorian, surfacing the walls to minimize the cracking and unevenness that comes with over 100 years of plaster settling and layer upon layer of wallpaper and paint. I worked with a designer for the color consulting, and Dean worked with her to get just the right paint and finish for multiple rooms and an awkward stairway. The crew was on time every morning, kept their equipment tidy, and finished so quickly I was really amazed. While they were here, I had a suspicion that the detail in the corners of the moulding around the doors and windows might actually be a flower instead of a round shape, but there was so much paint caked on them that you couldn't see it. Dean and his crew tried a couple products until they found one that worked, and sure enough- beautiful wooden flowers with individual petals! I'm sure it was a tremendous pain going through the house and stripping the dozens of them that were there, but I'm so very happy they did it. It's a spectacular little detail. In the end, there was very little touch-up because the crew had been so thorough, and the house still looks great inside! I chose Dean and what turned out to be the same crew again (Dean has a few crews!) when I took on the removal of the asbestos shingles someone slapped on top of the gingerbread shingled exterior of my home. There was SO MUCH PREP. Millions of staples, small holes to fill, large repairs by a carpenter to be sanded and made seamless... it was an enormous task. These guys worked so hard and were so efficient, I never felt like they wasted any time, never saw them meandering around staring at cell phones or just chatting. I also appreciated that they were so tidy. Their equipment was neatly tucked away at the end of each day. I never had to pick up food trash or cigarette butts or anything after them. Dean was available and communicative throughout the process, and even though I had chosen colors with a designer, his advice and suggestions were invaluable to the project. There was so little touch up once again, because these folks are so thorough. I couldn't possibly be happier with their hard work. I would not hesitate to call Dean for any painting project- the attention to detail is exquisite and the crew is kind and thoughtful of your space.
