If you've never been to a podiatric physician (podiatrist), want/need to start seeing one, and aren't sure what the experience is like once you get there, I'm happy to report that I had an outstanding first appointment experience at Austin Foot and Ankle Specialists. The office is set in a relaxing Hill Country setting with free parking shaded by live oak trees. The serene surroundings and organized, clean office, conveniently situated close to downtown yet much less stressful, are exactly what you hope to find in a medical office setting. Also impressive: The online check-in process was made available in advance; the welcoming, friendly front desk staff person helped me find the office after Apple Maps misdirected my navigation; and the attentive medical assistant ensured I felt comfortable and informed before seeing the doctor. Dr. Craig Thomajan was excellent--he took the time to explain everything clearly, answered my questions thoroughly, and his calm expertise put me at ease. I left feeling well cared for and with a clear understanding of my treatment plan. Now that I know what going to a podiatric physician involves, I won't hesitate to return in six weeks for my next appointment. Dr. Thomajan was very rude. He doesn't like any questions or comments. When my mom walked for him I just pointed at her feet and said "See how she turns her foot in", he actually got mad and said "You don't have to point at it! I can see!" I can't say more positive things about Dr. Chica. I had a terrible foot and ankle injury. I was on crutches for 7 weeks before I could even begin very elementary walking. I had injured every tendon in my foot up through my calf and every foot and ankle nerve was screaming pain, pain, pain. Dr. Chica was warm and compassionate in helping me deal with the pain and recover. He uses cutting-edge technology such as laser therapy and he has developed his own cream compound of pain meds and neuroagents that reduce the pain that he prescribed for me. The answering service is not helpful to resolve an issue by calling the office. They can rarely resolve any issues. I had orthotics made and am still being charged for the appointments to resolve the issues since they were not fabricated accurately. Then the check out employee did not post my payment to my account so I received a bill to pay additional money even though I'm a cash patient. Definitely feedback for the management to consider implementing systems. read more

I generally would wait until seeing a Dr. and receiving treatment after a time and having some success, before writing a review, and I am sure I will be back to update this in the future as I have only seen Dr. Thomajan once thus far, however I wanted to post here because when you have what has been diagnosed as Peripheral Neuropathy, OTHER doctors simply throw their hands up in the air and Do not help you AT ALL. At least that was my experience when seeking out help for this condition. I want to say that I am NOT diabetic. My PCP did not even try to figure out why I was suddenly struck by this, nor did the neurologist I went to see. So getting back to Dr. Thomajan, I felt like he was reading my mind. I was thinking, Why don't you try to figure out WHY I have this before you tell me there is no hope? When the other doctors just left me hanging. So I am still at the beginning of this journey, but Dr. Thomajan has given me HOPE! He sent in an order for an MRI to learn if there is Spinal Stenosis or other spinal degeneration or disease that could be causing this issue. So, why did the neurologist or the PCP I saw months ago not do that? I'm sorry, from my lay person perspective, it just seems like two answers here, one that Dr. Thomajan has a better understanding of this issue, and two, he actually cares enough about a patient he only just met, enough to try and help me. And I have insurance so it's not just about the money either because insurance totally rips doctors off if you did not know that, they only pay a fraction to the Doctors and hospitals and other providers of what the actual costs and charges are. So I hope this review helps someone who has neuropathy. My first experience with Dr. Thomajan was very positive. He was kind, compassionate, knowledgeable, and he also listened to me. I'm nervous about the MRI but I know it will provide Dr. Thomajan with information he needs and I have hope that he will be able to help me. And as much as I would love to have my feet back 100%, if I got back 50% that would be an immense improvement that would improve my life. read more

So happy I found Dr. Chica. I've had flat feet for my whole life and wear custom orthotics for them. I was in need of a new pair after 5+ years of wearing my old ones. He spent over a year making multiple versions and tailoring them to my needs in order to ensure they helped with my foot issues. This practice is the reason I will be walking again. First, Jennifer Traynor the office manager, is the reason that I was able to get care. I was very upset on the phone with her over some scheduling issues, (and I was not very nice in that moment) and she went above and beyond to help me even when I was unpleasant to talk to. She heard me and my pain and made a huge effort to get me in to see Dr Thomajan. This is my third doctor I've gone to, and I have been told by the other two to just wait to heal. I have had a painful ingrown toe nail for years. Dr Thomajan was fantastic in providing instant and long term relief! The diagnosis and procedure happened in the same visit. The process was painless due to Dr Thomajan's attention to detail to fully numb the toe prior to removing the portion of the nail. In Jan 2020, I used Dr. T for bone fusion surgery. Upon my first step, I knew something was painfully wrong. Dr. T was unable to diagnose the problem that existed post-surgery as "all the xrays look good". He would build new orthotics (about 6 in total) to solve the pain. Due to intense pain, I sought other help. It took 3 more doctors, 2 EMGs and several MRIs and 2 more surgeries to find out: the surgery needed to be redone, my leg's neurological system is irreparably damaged, the nerves between the toes were bound up in scar tissue, the foot's sesamoid bones were damaged (redo surgery allowed them to heal). I've waited 4 years to write this review ensuring I was finished with corrective surgeries. Dr.T was a nice man to work with; however, he did not work to resolve the issue that new orthotics weren't solving. Neither did he refer me to other doctors when he saw that something had gone wrong that he was unable to diagnose. I now walk with reduced pain and limited shoes options. read more

She even offered to work with me to refund the cost of the office visit, but that really wasn't a concern - water under the bridge. I'll definitely return, because despite the insurance mixup, I received quality care from Dr. Chica. I visited Dr Thomajan for a painful neuroma in my right foot which I have had for years. Several other doctors had examined it, one injected it with cortisone on two occasions, which did nothing to help. Dr. Thomajan recommended removing it by surgery. I was a little apprehensive due to the reluctance of the other doctors to perform surgery. I am now 4 weeks post surgery and I could not be happier with outcome. Surgery was breeze and recovery has been painless. I am now able to go on walks without pain. I wish I had gone to Dr. Thomajan years ago. I found this office from a friend's recommendation and after I went to another Doctor's office. I was not pleased ( to put it lightly) with the first doctor i went to, so I went to see Dr. Chica for second opinion. From the first phone call to the office, I knew I had made the right decision. The staff was so super nice to me and empathetic. They were so easy to talk to when i was explaining my situation and the whole process was a breeze. The nurse started by taking my information and then had a really good conversation about my issue. The nurse was very knowledgeable and then took X-rays of my foot. It was at that time i spoke to Dr. Chica who first started by examining my foot( which the first doctor I went to, did not). He was very easy to talk to and walked me through what he saw on the X-rays. We then talked about how we should proceed further and gave me instructions on what to do in the meantime. I am still under his care and will be going through the process of more tests. I have confidence that he has my best interest in mind and will do what he can to correct my issue. I am writing this review to warn others. I cannot be the first nor the last person has or will happen to. I was treated with little to no respect at this establishment and their billing practices were shady at best. I have never spent so many hours dealing with a medical practice and its billing practices. I stopped making appointments here as soon as I couldn't get refunds, but sadly I am still out hundreds of dollars. (This practice collected payments from both my insurance company and me and refuses to refund me after months.) Example 1: This establishment collects payments but does not post them to your account. Make sure you request and get a receipt at the time of payment. Since they don't post payments to your account upon receipt; you will later have to prove you made the payments. In the meantime, they will post bills to your account automatically. Example 2: They do not verify coverage with your insurance company. They leave that as an exercise for you, their customer, to do. (Clearly, it is cheaper for them for their customer to spend hours (UNPAID) on the phone with the insurance than for them to do their job.) Then they bill you the full price even if your insurance provides coverage because they say you can't be believed. Example 3: When the insurance company processes their claim, they will bill you for anything you owe them within a few business days of the claim being processed. According to their policy, if you don't pay fast enough they will turn you over to a collections agency. HOWEVER, if they overbilled you they do not attempt to issue a refund. The customer has to figure out the overbill and request a refund. They then proceed to make multiple excuses of why they can't issue a refund. I have yet to get a refund after months. Clarification: They collected hundreds of dollars from my insurance company AND me for the same services. They did not issue a refund. I have requested a refund in writing multiple times. They have had this money for months now. They have made numerous excuses of why they haven't made the refund, but never refunded the money. Example 4: I made appointments to see a doctor. Yet, I usually saw an assistant and the doctor would join for 1 or 2 minutes. Then the medical notes that were shared after the appointment reflected numerous things that were never discussed with me by the doctor. In addition, the assistant seemed more interested in when and where I had gotten a flu shot than the actual reason I was at this establishment. Example 5: Orthotics will be recommended but you won't be told the cost until you check out. Regardless, if you want them or not, you will be charged a minimum of $50.00 at check out for "casting supplies". They will hand you that paperwork at checkout to read, not before. In addition, the orthotics don't fit in running shoes and they will tell you that is your fault. So, if you are a runner, don't go here for orthotics. Example 6: The front desk staff is exceedingly condescending to numerous customers. When customers when asked questions about a bill at checkout, the front desk staff would say things like "That charge is for the brace you are wearing right now!" The customer would be wearing no brace and would point that out. The front desk staff would basically accuse the customer of stealing. I saw this happen several times and it happened to me. read more

An Asian saying: "a good doctor who is taking care of his patients as a mother giving care to her own children" and that's what I experienced with Dr. Thomajan! He was so wonderful during the surgery and post-op visits! I had the best surgery recovery experience, no pain so far and I am now in my 20 days post-op. Dr. Thomajan was washing my stinky foot in a caring and gentle way, he made me feel like he was taking care of his little girl! The first pic was my 20 days post-op and the second pic was my 11 days post-op, he made my foot more beautiful than ever, I am looking forward to the surgery of my right foot in a couple of months. I had a plantar plate surgery with Dr. Thomajan in 2020 and don't think I will ever recover from that surgery. I developed Morton's Neuroma after and have had issues walking since. I've never been the same. It's been a horrible last few years dealing with the pain and it's been getting worse. After another surgery with a different doctor(not here) to try and repair it, I am now dealing with a stress fracture and I can't feel my third toe. I say all this to warn people with the lasting effects of surgery. It's SO BAD. Before you ever think about doing surgery, you should get several opinions. I regret not getting more. This is a serious surgery although some of these doctors act like they do it all the time and it's no big deal. I'll never be able to wear heels or any shoe I used to wear ever again. I do not recommend this office or the PT a place next door. They had no experience and were trying to make me jump up and down and do all these exercises that I know made it worse when I was still extremely swollen. I had to stop PT within 2 weeks. Awful experience. I'm not sure why doctors don't bring up stem cell injections or PRP but worth looking into alternative options or another doctor if you are considering surgery. Make sure to wear the right shoes when you're going to be walking, standing, running for extended periods of time. I wish I could go back and start over. Good luck!!! read more

He conferred with another specialist (different field/practice) to check out whether a spine problem might be impacting a foot and leg problem. This is a superb office. This doctor cares and all his staff does too. After 6 months of plantar fasciitis his EPAT machine is helping. I had my second appt and was there early and his staff was at lunch. So I wouldn't have to wait an hour, the doctor himself jumped in and gave the treatment to me. His orthodits are the best in town with the most individualized testing. And the associated PT clinic, trained by him, is smarter and more in-depth than most PTs. I had foot surgery with Dr. Thomajan 3 years ago and it was the worst experience I have EVER undergone. I won't go into details but surgery went very wrong and I developed Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) from the surgery. My stitches didn't heal currently, my incision, or my foot and has never been the same. After the surgery he made me go to physical therapy next door to his office (Three Lakes Therapy) I went there for 6+ months and they made me even worse. My foot was not healing correctly, I could even barely walk, and they kept insisting to use metal tools to aggressively press into my incision that was not even healed and scar tissue and I would cry every time. I kept bringing up how this didn't feel right and it didn't look right, my foot was completely discolored and my ankle bone looked like it had deteriorated a little. Not knowing this was CRPS at the time, they didn't even seem to care to look into it. Months later when I had found out I had CRPS, the deep tissue work they were doing with the metal tools turned out to increase the aggressiveness of my CRPS. It was a nightmare. I had to go to about 10 different doctors, some of the best in the US and each and everyone of them say his surgery and incisions were not normal and it looked very incorrect. As we were trying to gather all the documents of the incisions he did from my surgery he had left out multiple times the main incision which was very sketchy. I have gone through many different treatments and injections trying to heal the damage and my CRPS I had received from getting that surgery and my foot has never been the same. read more

The foot care may be fine, but the billing is atrocious. I am being hounded for payment for orthotics that i paid for in December. Some of the front desk staff is surly and said 'oooooh, you have a balance' like i was a criminal. You cannot ever reach the billing department and when they call you to DEMAND PAYMENT, they have zero details and provide no assistance. The office staff in Westlake has told me on 3 separate times 'you are fine, you don't owe anything, we put the deposit on the other system, it just needs to be applied' but yet i still get threatening calls. All they do is 'send a message' which obviously has the same success as i do when i call. I have even brought proof of the payment to the office. Being harassed for $200 is not worth my time so I will be leaving this practice. read more

Healed! Picture for yourself my days as a Dickensian gutter snipe on crutches, my feet hopelessly twisted, maybe even on backwards, until I finally went to a stupid podiatrist. I mean, until a kindly passing podiatrist, seeing me from his carriage, immediately analyzed the subtle defects in my feet and wrote a prescription describing them to an orthotics specialist, whose custom shoe inserts, based on molds of my feet, have helped tremendously. For those keeping score: quick & correct diagnosis followed by non-surgical, effective treatment. So if your feet seem to hurt often, maybe more than other people's, it's impacting your life, and a $10 gel insert isn't cutting it, I strongly advise you see a podiatrist about 10 years sooner than I did. Thomajan is the best foot doctor that I've ever been to. Most podiatrists are glorified technicians who do minor foot surgeries and make orthodics. This guy also happens to be a Nerve Specialist who trained under the famous Lee Dellon. I'm a nurse who is on his feet 12 grueling hours a day and Thomajan is the only doctor to come up with solutions to allow me to deal with the Tarsal Tunnel pain that I have.
