Two different purchases in 4 years for the two of us. Great service and quite accommodating.

We have been getting our glasses at Austin Ryan for about 15 years and today is the reason why. My frames broke yesterday (Christmas) and I went to them today for a possible repair. The lenses were a few months past warranty and to save me money Steve said give me 15 minutes and they will be good as new! Within minutes Steve rigged up a way to fix them and they are perfect! When I asked how much I owe he said just a smile will do! This is why as long as we live in the area Austin Ryan will be the ONLY place we'll patronize! read more

I'm a senior citizen. I found frames and lenses at the New Paltz store that I liked. I was told that they do provide the service of installing new lenses in customer frames. I bought both with the concern that the frames could be found for less money elsewhere. The cost of the frames was $351. The lenses were around $500. With tax, the total purchase was $909. The day of the purchase I found the exact frames on line for less than $80. I immediately called the store and explained the situation. They offered to place the lenses in the $80 frames and refund the $351 for the frames I'd bought from them. They urged me to keep the order in tact until they could examine the $80 frames -- they were concerned that they might be knock-offs. Today I brought the $80 frames in. They were the real Ovvo frames and were an exact match to the $351 frames that they wanted to sell me. They did install the $500 lenses in my frames. When I asked if they would place them in a case for me, I was told that cases were for people who bought frames. I was told that I must have my own case and they declined to as much as place them in a protective cloth case. It is not way to threat a senior citizen. read more

My son has been going there since they first opened. actually they did not take his insurance yet, AS they HAD just opened+ But I had written his insurance~ on their behalf~ and my son"s~ and they covered him pretty quickly! Fact of the matter is, my son is almost 31 lives in Brooklyn & still comes up, to have his vision needs attended to~ by this business! We heard a rumor that they might be moving to another location? I hope not, because they are the only ones my Son Trusts to care for him. I met with Michael today who not only took time to redo my eyeglasses but made sure the prescription was correct. I had another vision exam (no charge) and resizing of the lenses. Wanted to apply IMed insurance to cost of new glasses. Tried contacts, paid $50 for exam AND $100 for instructions by a poorly trained staff member! Walked away from Austin poorer but did learn a valuable lesson. Did not like the used-car salesman treatment. Offered $50 credit in a confused and confusing computation toward the overcharged cost of glasses and frame (learned that they improperly used bifocal Rx to kick costs). They have a business model that assumes the customers are gullible. read more

This was singlehandedly the best optical experience I've ever had. I've been wearing glasses for 16 years, lived in two countries and 6 states, and I've never been to a better place. The entire facility is spotless and very well organized. Every single employee was kind and helpful. I wasn't sure what my lenses were made of on my current glasses, so the folks in the back had a look and tightened up the arms for me in the meantime. When looking for my new pair, I described what I was looking for and was immediately pointed in the right direction. I literally picked the first glasses I was shown. The best! Friendly, professional, knowledgeable service from everyone, the optometrist to the optician to the sales staff. Excellent at handling insurance claims so I don't have to worry about that, and they always make the best recommendations on how to use my benefits so I end up saving money. Had eye exams for myself and my son who was hoping to score contact lenses. The onsite optometrist is a Mr. Verrichio, and he was very thorough in his assessment of our eyesight and conservative about recommending new corrections. His recommendations suggest to me that his primary concern is eyes not dollars. He directed me on a different approach to using my readers and distance glasses; and will have my son wait until his Christmas break when they can spend more time training on the contact lenses. When I found out that my original review hadn't posted, I rewrote my review for AUSTIN RYAN OPTIKA, New Paltz, NY. My husband and I moved to Ulster County from Brooklyn, NY 8 1/2 years ago. It took time to find new health professionals but it took only one trip to Austin Ryan to know that we had found our new optician. Michael takes all the time necessary to ensure one is buying frames which fit properly and measures carefully to confirm that the lenses will be perfect when they come back from the lab. My husband's prescription is quite intricate and I need to try on many frames before I decide. We have bought 10 pair of frames with prescriptions including prescription sunglasses. I've been going to Austin Ryan Optika in New Paltz New York for almost 13 years. I have had to wear glasses for 20 years. I was told that there was never going to be contact lenses for me to be able to wear due to my eye script and you know what... everyone else was wrong! My fussy Silhouette frames broke. I stopped in here, desperate to get them fixed and dreading the wait time and charges I'd endured at another local optician who shall remain nameless. Austin Ryan Optika does not even offer Silhouette frames, but awesome staff + Optician Michael repaired them in minutes and - unbelievably - for no charge, including an adjustment that allowed me to see better with them than the day I bought them. My partner and I went here last week for a basic eye exam and basic lenses. My partner called ahead of time to make sure everything was covered under the insurance we even called the insurance company to insure that everything was covered. We were told and even have a print out of the benefits explaining that there is a $0 dollar charge for everything that was done. A week later we call as we hadn't heard from them about getting the glasses. We were then told on the phone that we owed all this money out of the blue. We called the insurance company several time to find out that they were charging us EXTRA for writting a simply prescription for the glasses on top of that they raised the original price they had told us the glasses were free so that now they are no longer covered. Also the insurance company told us they just sent in a bill saying my partner had been there last year which he had not. In fact he didn't even have this particular insurance last year. These people are scam artist and we will never go back there nor ever recommend them to anyone. They should be ashamed. read more

Having not been to an eye doctor in over 10 years, I wasn't sure what to expect. Additionally, I just moved to this area, so I had to start out fresh to find a new eye doctor. I was beyond impressed regarding my entire experience. They worked with me and my horrible insurance plan, found the perfect pair of glasses; but the actual exam was the best I've ever had. The doctor answered all my questions and explained things to me in a way that I could understand but was not condescending. He was excellent at diagnosing my exact prescription strength; finding out that my old glasses had actually been the wrong strength at too high a prescription; this explains why I never wore them and got headaches, when I did. The staff was incredibly polite, professional and friendly. If you happen to have money or a good eye plan, their selection of frames is outstanding, along with their use of the most current and cutting edge technology and contact companies of the highest quality.
