I wanted to start the year with a self-defense class, so I did some research and chose this place because their website clearly outlined what to expect. Lu and Alex were fantastic instructors, making the 1.5-hour session fly by while ensuring I felt confident defending myself against close-range strikes. Working with partners was a great way to connect with others and practice techniques in a realistic setting. It was an excellent session and a valuable opportunity to learn self-defense, which differs from kickboxing since it doesn't require building up routines and steps over several classes. The only downside is that parking can be challenging due to the shared lot with other fitness businesses. So plan to go a little early to be on time and park along the street. read more

Great group of people with a lot of energy, love, and diversity. I really enjoyed my time here, but unfortunately have to move further North. The only drawback for me was the price and lack of flexibility with booking classes and being charged, but then again I understand the policy just found it to be annoying and not suitable for my lifestyle. This place is a total sweat factory and the people are pretty rad. All jokes aside, this gym really is awesome. I had been curious about taking boxing classes for quite some time and finally pulled the trigger after I found ABB through a simple google search of nearby boxing gyms. I tried it out for the spring time/lunch time bootcamp and was hooked. The coaches are very supportive and push you just enough, but still know your limits. (Example: I've been told to go heavier with med ball slams because they know I can do it and want me to be stronger.) The other members are super nice and always willing to give a helping hand- whether that be helping a new comer wrap their hands or even politely correcting you on your form in class. More often than not though, we manage to have fun while working out. I couldn't have asked for a better gym experience. Overall, it's nothing but positivity and a wonderful community of strong women from all walks of life that somehow managed to find a common ground in boxing. If I were you, I'd get to scheduling my first trial class after reading this. read more

All women, woman-owned, super supportive, and a hell of a workout. The instructors box and compete, and the owner is a 2nd degree black belt and boxing competitor. This is a badass, hard-working gym without the ego or the bravado. I love it love it and am so stoked we found this place. I saw the full page story about this gym in the recent Community Impact. Run by women supporting women focusing on helping each of us to show up and be better, stronger, confident and skilled. I was embraced immediately when I joined the June Boxing Bootcamp. And once it was over, I had already signed up for the next one. I love the fact that this is a real boxing class--not some hipster version. Don't get me wrong--it's hard. It challenging. You have to be open to trying new things and willing to not be very good at first but the incremental progress and payoff has been rewarding, especially in a short amount of time. You show up, do your best and no one cares what level you are. They just want you to learn the real techniques and become a better athlete and person. All instructors have been great, knowledgeable, provide great constructive input while still supporting you where you are in that moment. I can't recommend this enough. Do it. You won't regret it. I started ABB about 6 months ago and I am hooked. I have never felt out of place regardless of my fitness level, which honestly is low but improving every class. I didn't even know how to jump rope when I started and the coaches (Ashley and Alex) took time to give me pointers and encourage me to stick with it. This is not some commercial gym. These women are serious boxers that make the classes fun and teach real technique and push your limits. I've been going to Austin Boxing Babes since February 2016, so about 7 months, and I have fallen in love with the gym, the coaches, the community, and the skill of boxing. A friend had told me about the gym, so I decided to sign up for the free trial class. I was welcomed by Julia as I walked in the door for the 6am class. After the first class I went ahead and signed up for a membership, because I was instantly hooked. From there, my addiction to the gym has grown exponentially. I was a ritual 6am class attendee, and I began to form relationships with us "regulars". Each class we pushed each other to learn new skills, do one more push up, one more sit up, or execute a skill better. Not only did we push each other through the classes, but we also developed friendships with one another. I knew I would start my day at 6am, laughing with new friends, checking in with each other, and also getting a great workout during the class. As I have had to transition to evening classes with my work schedule, the atmosphere is no different. Each class is unique in its own way, and I have developed new relationships with a new group of "regulars". One part I love about the evening classes, is the variety of skill level. Classes will include everyone from "first timers" to members that have been coming to the gym for years. Everyone at the gym is willing to help one another out, teach, and push one another to develop individually. I have learned just as much working with a beginner boxer as I have working with the advanced boxers, and the welcoming environment allows that learning setting. I never would have guessed I would enjoy boxing as much as I do. It is more than just a workout, but also a way to build self-confidence, release stress, join a community, and overcome personal challenges. read more

I started with Austin Boxing Babes on August 11th 2015. I had read all of the reviews (good and bad) on Yelp and Facebook and decided to take my trial class. Up until then, I have led a very sedentary lifestyle (including smoking) and was a little afraid of how intense the class would be for me and if I might be discouraged if I couldn't keep up. I'm not very consistent with working out solo and I've always wanted to improve my upper body and core strength as well as my coordination and endurance. The reason I chose a group class at a small gym is because of the off chance there would be a similar camaraderie to that of Roller Derby. Familiar faces working just as hard as you at different levels can be very encouraging and have a positive influence on your own improvement. That's my personal preference. Having other members at my level or lower so I don't feel completely intimidated and having members that are intermediate and advanced to help teach, encourage and be the benchmark of what I would like to become. Fortunately, Austin Boxing Babes has been exactly that for me. Here are some bullet points in case you like lists, like me ;-D Pros: -Great location for South and Central Austinites (the new facility will also be in a great, South/Central location) -The gym has a very respectful vibe, is clean and well organized. -Minimal equipment is necessary because you are the equipment (and that's awesome because that means you can practice ANYWHERE) -My classmates (the regulars and the newbies) are super friendly, informative, well rounded and talented. -No two classes have been exactly the same yet! That's important to me because I fall in to habits and routines can be boring. -I appreciate that class time used to it's fullest (no congregating around the water cooler during class time, you really get your money's worth) -It's not fancy. It's bare bones, American Boxing (that's a good thing.) -A martial arts style ranking system is utilized to keep the class structure organized and the students motivated to keep pushing to the next level. This may not be for everyone but considering my own competitive nature and constantly wanting to one up my personal best, I appreciate the structuring. -The owner is very straight forward both in class and with the membership policies and level requirements. -One hour goes by really fast. Cons: -Currently not the greatest parking but great parking is rare in Austin (the new facility will have ample parking too so, not really a con) -Not easy coming from a sedentary lifestyle but it's unbelievable how quickly that changes when you go consistently. -A martial arts style ranking system is utilized to keep the class structure organized and the students motivated to keep pushing to the next level. This may not be for everyone, I get it. -One hour goes by really fast. To conclude, I feel much stronger, balanced and more capable than I have in a very long time. My energy and coordination (BONUS!) have increased as well. If anything that I've stated above excites or motivates you in any way, I highly recommend watching the first Rocky (the best one, no argument) and then taking a trial class. read more

I haven't sweat this bad since my soccer days in high school! I was on the fence about taking any classes until I woke up and told myself to JUST DO IT! I signed up for the boot camp and told myself that if I can attend all the boot camp classes (3 a week for 6 weeks) than I would get a membership. Welp, looks like I'm getting a membership after my bootcamp. I look forward to these classes and find myself getting into my car headed to bootcamp on days they aren't held (it only happened twice I promise.) The classes are fun and there are no boys allowed! I came to this gym wanting to "try" boxing. Two years later, I am in better shape than I've EVER been. And when I say 'better shape,' I mean I can do a stack of straight-legged push-ups, chin-ups from a dead hang, and climb a rope and ring that bell. Not to mention punch the crap out of things. I found my power here, and I carry it around 24/7. Then best part is the community. Every woman here is peeled back and genuine. No pretense or showiness. The instructors and members are warm and welcoming, the environment isn't threatening, the studio is beautiful and clean, and I love the small community we have! I've always wanted to learn how to box, and I feel really lucky that there's a great women's boxing gym in South Austin! The teachers and staff are super nice and its great to meet all different ages, races, and abilities of women who are interested in a great workout through boxing. Classes cover general conditioning, boxing techniques and footwork, and combination drills which exercise your mind in addition to your body. There are students of all ages (some are AISD Off Campus PE students) and the gym is really beginner friendly for women of all levels of fitness. I am a total beginner boxer. My trainer at UT recommended Austin Boxing Babes to me because of the all babes environment and my desire for a high intensity workout. I was nervous to take a group class as my first experience, being a total beginner who didn't know the first thing about boxing, so I signed up for a private session with Julia. The private session was incredible. Julia taught me the basics, like the proper stance and a few basic punches. She showed me how to wrap my hands and to make sure to form my fist properly so as to avoid injury. She helped me with encouragement and making adjustments when I was doing something wrong or needed to change my position. She is so encouraging (and never condescending, which is a hard balance to strike!) while at the same time challenging you to push yourself harder to get the most of your workout. I have nothing but good things to say about her. After my first session, I signed up for the monthly pass, which is quite a good deal! Once I began attending the group classes, I really felt the sense of community that Austin Boxing Babes fosters. Everyone is ready to talk to you, everyone greets you with a smile and a "hey!", everyone is willing to help you out when you forget how to wrap your hands for the 50th time... I'm also terrible at jumping rope, so Julia gave me a goal and a time frame that I could work within to hit the goal. She really helps you improve your overall fitness as well as working with you on boxing skills. All of the other trainers are equally qualified, encouraging, supportive, helpful, kind, and all around awesome. Austin boxing babes is a friendly place, it is a truly supportive community.
