Xterra holds a series of trail runs throughout the year with the best of the best competing at the…read moreXterra Nationals. The Boney Mountain Trail Race is #4 of the series (7 total). There are two options for this run. A 6K and 21K. Since my fiancee and I are training for 2 marathons (LA And Paris) and a 1/2 Ironman Triathlon, we decided to go with the 21K (13 mile) course. The 21K course has 2,800 feet of climbing with 1,800 of that climb coming at mile 6-10. If you can get yourself up to the top or even close to the top the views are amazing (well if you aren't concerned with your time and can enjoy the views). This is a tough course. It's the toughest of the series. The course consist of very little pavement (in the beginning and the end), some fire roads and mostly singletrack. The race is well organized with a good amount of support. There are water/Gatorade stations scattered throughout the course and at least 1 or 2 Gu stops but I didn't stop since I usually carry my own nutrition on long runs. I'm sure the people were friendly. The one thing that stood out to me about this race was the amount of paramedics available. There seemed to be a couple of them station at every 3 miles or so. It goes to show how tough and dangerous this course can be. As the saying goes "what goes up must come down" the descents on this trail is pretty technical. If you can master the downhill and not be afraid you can pick up a lot of time. During the first practice run 3-4 weeks back I was hesitant on going full blast down the hills because I didn't want to eat dirt and I don't like pain. This time I decided to just go for it and make up as much time as possible. I'm so glad I did because I shaved a lot of time off. The weather was sunny on race day but cold. However, this wasn't the problem. The Santa Ana winds were blowing so it made the run a lot tougher in the beginning. Once you made it past the first 2 miles or so the wind wasn't bad until the last mile. The final 1/2 mile was the toughest because you knew you were at the end and wanted to give it your all only to have mother nature and her 20MPH head wind coming at you. It felt like running in slow motion. I really wish there was somebody I could have drafted off of. In the end I did have fun. Got my butt kicked by the trail but got a great workout and a better understanding of trail running. Happy runnings!

Fun, challenging course (the most challenging in their series)! I had run the Xterra Crystal Cove…read morerace, so I was familiar with the event and knew them to be small, but well-organized and efficient. I love that they offer same day packet pickup. The shuttling to Boney Mountain was great and easy to figure out. If you've never run a trail race, you should know the ambiance is different than a road race. It tends to draw a more "running for the sake of running" type crowd and obviously, on the trails, there is no crowd support, save for random hikers and runners who may give you well-wishes. The climbs in this race are no joke - prepare for a fair amount of walking unless you're in truly top condition! But the views are lovely, as was the trail. I love the finish line at Xterra events - it's always really enthusiastic, especially given how small the race field is. They have good food following the race and usually some giveaways and lots of age category prizes. The medals are small and definitely "budget" but these aren't big races, so that's par for the course. I would highly recommend Xterra events to someone new to trail running who wants a more structured way to explore the trails. I plan on doing more in the future - I really enjoyed the vibe of the Xterra races and this race in particular was the right combination of challenging and beautiful!

Very professionally run but still relatively casual and fun. The venues for all three portions is awesome. The bike leg is longer than most other Tri's that I have done so it definitely benefits bikers, at least for the sprint. Great expo afterwards, lots of community support... I highly recommend this event!!

In addition, we saw that our coach, Alan Linderman, was not only a USA pickleball certified instructor but an ambasador for our community as well. We were getting training from an expert who would show us the proper rules of the game and guidance on technique, awesome! Now, it did take us over 1 year to get enrolled in a beginner class, because registration gets booked up within 30 minutes of open enrollment due to the high demand. They do offer many classes, however, since the demand is high, my complaint is that they do not shuffle people off the wait list into the classes which consequently, reduces the opportunity for people to get a chance to learn. I had a 8 week class from June 24 - August 5 2024 and the people who didn't show up after the 1st lesson or was flaky in attendance did no favors to the people waiting. I never saw anyone enter our class to make the class whole so there is room for improvement there and if your trying to be a participant, set your alarm to be the first to enroll because there is no guarantee that you'll get in, but your chances are improved. Also, with the high demand, there are not enough pickle ball courts available for you to practice outside of these classes, you'll have a hard time getting better. CRPD needs to build more courts or convert tennis courts into dual courts so keeping that in mind, good luck. Anyway, for the money we spent, $90/pp, it was worth every penny and the website was user friendly to submit payment.

Then you realize...everyone already has pools, oh; and we live by the beach. Anyhoo...after a long three year break, I crave the thrill of victory and have taken up triathlon again. I used to swim with SCAQ when I lived in Venice (another very good program), but it's just too far for me to drive for a pre-dawn workout. The program is held in the Cal Lutheran Pool which was only recently finished. The pool is an outstanding 50 meters which will put the hurt on you if like me, you are woefully unfit. You can't fake fitness in swimming. Nancy, the head masters coach is quite accomplished...UCLA All American, Top Ten in the world in backstroke, etc. etc. She's a good coach who keeps her eye on everyone and gives regular feedback. Her workouts are tough...especially the 1.5 hour workouts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They even have another coach take the beginners in the 25 meter pool to teach noobs pool ettiquette, strokes, flip turns and all that other neat stuff. While they have a lot of items you will need...pull buoys, kick-boards, fins, you may want to invest in those AND a swim cap (if you're a lady), clear and dark goggles (if you're going to swim during the day), hand paddles (start with small ones that fit the size of your hands), wait and buy your fins from Nancy. Also I noted that people are using snorkels when doing pull drills. A couple things BRING WATER!!! Yes, you're in the water, but you still need to drink. If you're a guy and you're not used to wearing those lovely package revealing speedos, you can keep your goodies under wraps with the "down to the knee" versions at your local Sports Chalet. They have locker rooms with showers.

I have been eyeing this park for a while now and finally got the catch to venture up north! It's so beautiful and clean and very well thought out. - shaded parking structure - very clean restrooms - lots of grassy space - picnic tables that are fully covered (able to reserve) - baseball field - basketball courts - tennis/pickleball courts - bigger and smaller playground - ant hill to climb and slide - butterfly climbing structure - (pro/con) - wood chips What more could you ask for? Only downside would be the playground itself isn't very shaded so on hot days, it'll be rough! Highly recommend to check out if you're in the area! . Also very close to many shopping plazas! And the janss marketplace mall!

I had to come home from Havasu to see my babies, and I took them here for a day at the park…read more This was a lovely park, and my kids loved it right away. There's a lot of space for them to ride their scooters; the playground itself is big and beautiful with multiple slides and great flower theming. The best part, though, is the ant hill that they build into the park. My kids love it because it is a literal hill that you use cardboard boxes to slide down. This was the highlight for them, and they spent most of their time just sliding down and having a blast with cardboard boxes. I live in North Hollywood, so this was a drive, but it was worth it so that my kids could have a blast, which they did. This park is at the top of our list!

My 6 year old went to Makos surf camp for spring break and had an incredible experience! She had…read morenever surfed before but was standing up on a board, having a blast, on the first day. By the end of the week, she was confident on the surfboard and in the ocean. The instructors are awesome with kids; encouraging and positive. They reapply sunscreen throughout the day and there are plenty of options for the kids to rest and do other water/ beach activities if they get tired of surfing. We will definitely keep Makos in our camp rotation !

My son trusted him immediately. My son till two weeks prior was scared of the ocean and would not step near it. Miller made him comfortable and was playful with him. He was a great teacher and you can tell he really cared. I would highly recommend Mako Surf Club for lessons. Its a great location for learning and Tom and his team are so great. I thought they were especially safe and great with kids. Miller was so lovely to my son and even played soccer with him after the lesson. It was very generous and sweet. My son will have a core memory about this, I know it! We will for sure be using them again too.

They said if questions cal the park office which I still think is ridiculous.
