The large area that Malibu Makos has...its great!

MALIBU MAKOS Surf Club is the BEST surf camp around...hands down! This is another business where I want to give more then 5 stars! I happen to be a BIG fan of this very special Surf Camp. My oldest son Everett has been surfing there for 6 years now and he loves it! He actually can't wait to go each year. He has improved so much with the help of the amazing staff. He has always been safe there, it's a high priority for the staff and as a parent, I really appreciate that. I will have to gush a bit now about how great the camp counselors, staff and owners truly are. Tom Corliss is the man who founded Malibu Makos. He is always there and I like that he takes the time to interact with all of the kids. I have had some fun conversations with him as well-he is funny! You can see that Tom loves what he does and I see that a lot of the kids at camp joke around with him, and like to be around him. He has done an an excellent job of hiring great teams every year who are pros that truly give their all to the kids at camp. They are dedicated, playful, patient, energetic and caring. The counselors really get these kids excited to be up on their surfboards and they do it safely and with positive attitudes & helpful feedback. Malibu Makos is the ONLY surfing school permitted and licensed by the LA County Dept of Beaches & Harbors. They have many experienced Life Guards, Pro Surf instructors and educators who are committed to having fun, being safe and they will provide you and your family with the BEST surfing experience you could ask for. Since 1991, they have offered surf camps for kids ages 5-17 on the beautiful beaches of ZUMA. (the beach is awesome!) All equipment is provided, transportation is available for a fee, and the instructors are so great with the kids of all ages...why wouldn't you want to be there? By the way, they have PIZZA on the beach for the kids...and deliver good food as well. (I want to go there, but my son would be horrified-ha!) So...as a parent-I like to arrive to Makos a little early (pickup is 2:30-3) so I can see my son surf. It's fun to watch the kids surfing and I look for my son catching the waves. It's a peaceful, stunning view and I feel very lucky that we found this wonderful, and impressive surf camp. They have it dialed in! It runs smoothly and efficiently. Also, they make Surf Lessons available YEAR ROUND! They teach private and group surf lessons to kids and adults and they truly try to educate students on ocean safety, environmental awareness and coastal marine species. All instructors are CPR and first aid certified, insured and permitted and have up to date police reference checks. Malibu Makos is a great company! They also has PRIVATE EVENTS as well! If you are looking to host a fun corporate event, private birthday party, or beach party then you should come to their prime location on Zuma Beach and plan your event! They offer a wide variety of food options and tents, tables, surfing equipment, transportation and instructors are provided! His instructors will be positive, patient and experienced. They will teach you how to start in basics and you can watch your skills grow and soon you will be catching epic waves and you won't be able to wipe that smile off you face! If you want to learn to surf, whether for a one time experience or for a lifetime of fun. This is the place to go. I took my son here in the early summer for some private lessons and are still continuing to do so. He has fallen in love with the sport and cannot get enough of it. Mostly due to the instructors at this school. He has worked with a few different ones and has loved them all. They are all top notch professional people who make sure you learn and have a great time out in the water. The school provides everything you need to go out and have a blast at ANY age.

Surf day at Malibu Makos, July 2022!

Great consistent and safe surfing instruction, we've been going there for about a decade so far! What ever your skill level or your age, you're sure to have a great time! I was looking for a surf school for my daughter back when she was in 6th grade and she got hooked on surfing at a school surf trip with the county, but I needed to find surf school available to the public. After doing research, I tried out Malibu Makos, and we never looked back! Over the years we've had epic surf birthday parties, group lessons for family, and because of our schedule, my daughter who is now in college, still does private lessons each summer at our convenience as we have done for the last decade. (It's so fun to see the younger kids at the camp having a blast!) Tom the owner and his son are great, and each instructor is highly qualified and so enthusiastic, always a great experience. The section of the beach he has his camp and does private lessons is not over crowded, you won't feel intimidated. We always make a day of it and feel like we went on a vacation for the day! I highly recommend Malibu Makos!

End of the day - having so much fun and begging to come back!

We are from Texas and my kids have never touched a surf board. They were hesitant and scared of sharks when we dropped them off, but then they met some instructors during check in and the fun began. Some cool people taught them how to pick out and out on a wetsuit and apparently the highlight was learning how to dive through waves, boogie boarding, and surfing. We are going to make an annual trip to California for this camp because my boys loved it so much! Thank you!

His authentic soul and pure love of the water have imbued a level of sensitivity, passion, and deep study in my son, nurturing his growth from a young boy into an adolescent. I can confidently say the level of care offered by Malibu Surf Coach is not readily available with most, if not all, Los Angeles surf companies. My son was 7 when he had his first lesson with Malibu Surf Coach. When he was 12 years old, we had a brief term of surfing with a company in Venice through our Charter school, but our experience so paled in comparison, that we chose to forego the lessons paid by our charter, and invest in Malibu Surf Coach. This was the best decision we could have ever made. The unparalleled excellence of Malibu Surf Coach is unique and rare. Most surf companies lock in at one location, no matter what the surf conditions are, operating mostly like a day care. With Stingray, you get the most authentic, raw surf experience in some of the most beautiful locations California has to offer. Stingray's ties to the land and sea go back generations, and surfing with him is a spiritual experience. His priority is the very best experience and surf available for my son, and after each lesson, my son is filled with such gratitude, as if transported by the lesson. Before scheduling, Stingray will track the waves, and pick the most optimal window and location to offer my son. His generosity, time and commitment here are heartfelt. He and my son will sometimes start at one location, then drive to another if the waves aren't good. My son has learned so much from the extra attention, effort and care Stingray offers. More over Malibu Surf Coach's rates are low for the incredible gifts that come with each lesson. My son has been gifted an invaluable journey into the life of a surfer by Stingray, which has contributed so meaningfully to his maturation and growth. He has flourished under Stingray's mentorship in ways that are subtle and significant. As Stingray's student, he has received a depth of physical, emotional and psychological development. Our family will remain indebted to Malibu Surf Coach, with the deepest respect and affection. Thank you, Stingray.

Parking wise, there's street parking along PCH, paid parking lot on PCH, street along the beach as well as another paid lot on the beach. Depending on the time, parking is a bitch as it's always full. It's a pretty wide stretch of beach so there's plenty of spaces for laying out and so on. One side has all the volleyball court. We arrived around 11:30 and luckily found street parking along the beach. It was nice out, sunny and a good amount of people along close to the water. We found a spot and made ourself comfortable. There was a good half dozen or so school buses parked where the volleyball courts are. Either a summer camp or school is back in session and it was a beach day. The odd thing, after an hour we arrived, the clouds started to roll in. Within minutes, it went from sunshine to overcast and gloomy. Stayed like that for a good hour and half. Even looking out to the hillside, it was so gloomy that you couldn't see down the beach. When the clouds burned off, it was back to beautiful beach weather. Lifeguard towers were in full force. We did notice that security on four wheelers were patrolling. They did questioned some people. It's a beautiful stretch of beach if you haven't been. The water was beautiful and looked clean but the waves were on a different level. They were pretty massive so lifeguards were on full force. People did go in the water but not a lot. To make it more magical, there were schools of dolphins swimming close by the shore. Even more fun, you could see them basically surfing the waves. That brought everyone on their feet trying to get the perfect picture. There's a good amount of restrooms and showers. It was actually clean which is a major plus. There's also a little lagoon that's a hangout for all the seagulls and pelican. Sand was soft and hot. Beach was clean, water was clean so it's was a good experience. It's a must if you haven't been.

We've all heard of PTSD…read more... You know, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But have you heard of PDSB?? (I'll break this one down in a bit) Well, if you've read any of my other reviews of the picturesque beaches in Southern California, your PTSD of "here we go again, another review about white sandy beaches, moderate temp. waters and picture perfect sunsets" by Lance L. just might kick in. But bear with me, because this review, you're definitely not gonna want to skip. So what is PDSB you ask? Well Point Dume State Beach of course! Yes, one of Malibu's finest & for good reason too! Sure, when everyone thinks about beaches in Malibu... For those with families, It's usually Zuma Beach, but that's where EVERYBODY goes and because of this, it's ALWAYS packed! And of course, there's where all the surfers go.... Surfrider Beach, hence the name! But Surfrider is for hangin' 10 and you just might get a big stare down by the locals. But Point Dume State Beach or PDSB as I know you will now refer to it is about to be your new favorite. Here's why: A pay lot which sounds like it sucks to have to pay just to go to the beach, but the minimal cost ($6-$15 depending the season) is worth it. The lot is literally parallel to the beach and once you park, you are right on the sand! In addition, Point Dume State Beach, although smaller than Zuma is pretty decent because it's not as well known about so you will definitely find a place to plant that umbrella and set up your beach towel to watch the kids play, throw a football around or work on your tan lines. As far as Safety, Not only is lifeguard towers right on the sand, but a lifeguard headquarters office is also onsite, so if something goes south, help is very nearby. Point Dume State Beach does have fairly maintained, public restrooms that's are serviced regularly by the beaches and harbors maintenance team as well as a few porta-potties onsite for use. The beaches themselves are clean and do not have a lot of trash, debris or tar like some of the beaches that I've been to up North on the Ventura County Side (Oxnard & Ventura beaches). And the best part, some of the best sunsets you can catch on this part of the coastline. Besides the actual beach, you can actually hike from the beach side itself up the Point Dume hiking trail to get an even better view or jump off the cliff if you dare. But.... Please, Please, Just make sure you are a solid swimmer if you are a real swimmer thrill seeker as the water near the cliff is rocky and the currents are very unforgiving. There are always calls for service where Lifeguards, Firefighters and the Sheriff's department are on scene performing rescues, but unfortunately, sometimes are unsuccessful and people have tragically drowned. So maybe leave the Olympic style diving into the Big Blue to the pros. And now that you probably have actual PTSD from me telling you how you could actually die if you aren't careful.... Maybe just shake it off and get some PDSB instead and enjoy the Best of Malibu from the safety of your seat right on the sand! "Life's a Beach, Enjoy it!"
