They ask you to pay 10 dollars to hold your backpack in a completely insecure hall and they explain that it's a real service so we are supposed to stay until the end to avoid to disturb the attending believers. Nevertheless most of the attendance is composed by tourists and they are constantly entering in the "church" even while the priest is talking. At a specific moment they ask everybody to standup and to walk in a circle throughout the whole church and reach some baskets with a suggested offering of 10 dollars each person. It's a completely fake show just to raise some money from the tourists. Please, don't go there.

The music program is exceptionally strong, with top-notch directors and a roster of professional musicians that rivals those of NYC churches. Every Sunday they deliver concert-quality music, and there are opportunities for singing and playing handbells, at different levels, for anyone who would like to join. The program is excellent, somehow, without being exclusive or elitist. The Director of Children's and Youth Ministry, who runs the youth groups, is hilarious. The kids love him. He finds the right mix of games, lessons and fellowship to engage students, and ensures EVERY student feels welcome and part of the community. Last, but not least, the sermons are first-rate. From the pulpit, I want to learn something and be challenged to change something. I find that at RCB. The sermons are thought-provoking, assume (correctly) a high level of knowledge and sophistication of the congregation, and push each listener to reassess how his/her actions are reflective (or not reflective) of the week's Christian principle. We worried when we moved to the suburbs that we would not find a church that matched our family's differing interests and hopes for a faith community. We need not have. Over the past several years, RCB has become our family's home.

A glance at their website gives a prospective visitor an idea of their basic tenents: "Our parish contains "cradle" Episcopalians, as well as many people who come from religious traditions other than Episcopalian, including Roman Catholicism and non-Christian belief systems such as Judaism and Buddhism. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we invite you to join us. You'll be welcome here!" If that doesn't say 'that they may all be one' loud and clear, then I don't know what does, my friend. The rector, Rev. Nora Smith, is personable and down-to-earth, much like other Episcopal priests I have encountered. Her sermons are thoughtful and those that I have heard touch upon topics relevant to modern life and individual struggles. There is much to take way from the sermons themselves, and they make for a thought-provoking experience. This congregation also appears to take its concern for the wider world quite seriously. Their Sunday prayers include remembrances for Shane and Josh, the two American hikers still imprisoned in Iran; the environment and our stewardship of it; missions to the less fortunate in the Third World; as well as the standard prayers for bishops, parish folk, and the sick. It's nice to attend services at a church that has such a regard for the world and its people. The congregants are extremely friendly and go out of their way to introduce themselves and make you feel at home. Coffee is served after Mass in the well-appointed parish hall, which is nice and homey. Music here is a treat for the ears - although the choir is currently on hiatus for the summer - and there is also a small chapel off to the side of the main sanctuary where one can sit in private contemplation. I could go on, but if you find yourself in Irvington I recommend that you experience this parish for yourself. You won't be disappointed; rather, you will be welcomed warmly.

I attended Abyssinian Baptist Church for several years while Rev. Butts (rest in peace) was the…read morepastor. During that time, I honestly didn't learn the core gospel truths that I needed most. The church did not clearly teach that we are saved by grace through faith alone, or that we are not under the works of the law for salvation. Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Because I didn't have a firm foundation in the true gospel of grace, I later got pulled into a Hebrew Israelite group that taught justification by works and keeping the law. I stayed in that system for 15 years, trapped under heavy bondage, because I didn't know how to defend against their false doctrine. Thankfully, Jesus set me free. The Holy Spirit opened my eyes to the real gospel -- that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ's finished work, not by law-keeping. I'm sharing this testimony because I wish someone had clearly taught me these truths back then. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Abyssinian Baptist Church as a place where someone will be grounded in the saving grace of Jesus Christ. I don't know how the church is today under new leadership, but during my years there it left me unprepared and vulnerable to false teaching. If you're looking for a church that clearly teaches salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, I would encourage you to keep searching and testing everything against Scripture. We found the church after a healthy and thorough tour of several churches in the area. We were spiritually taken in by Pastor Marvin Henk, a proud and humble building and so many kind people. We became part of the community and participated in the events we chose, gave what we could and think fondly of it still several years later. Lord, if you're reading this, let them continue with the Oktoberfest party too. So much fun with the Austrian Boys, the food and the Spaten.
