They inspected it right away, and found that I needed new springs in the front--they said mine were broken. Their two options to fix the issue would have cost me approximately $615 (the "cheap" option) to $665. Well, folks, Tracey Phelps doesn't have $700 kickin' around, so I got a second opinion. My boyfriend, Jake, took a gander at the springs and being a car guy, noticed that the springs WEREN'T BROKEN AT ALL. The paint was peeling off, but otherwise totally fine! He then told me that the Autosmith tried to rip him off in the past and that I should head over to Bob's Auto in Essex. All in all, it cost me $65 for an oil change and inspection at Bob's Auto, as opposed to ten times that at Autosmith for work that I didn't even need. I know Autosmith is trying to expand and pay for their new stuff, but can they give their neighbors a break? I can't afford to pay for your new shop, and neither can most of us in this cruddy recession.

When paying, I was asked to rewrite my check to make it out directly to the owner and not the business itself. I made a light, offhand comment about it being a little unusual, but I was clear that it wasn't a problem--I immediately paid in full and left a generous tip. Later that day, the owner called me and spoke to me in a very aggressive and hostile manner, questioning whether I had an issue with how he runs his business. The tone of the call felt confrontational and unprofessional, and it left me feeling uneasy and very shaken. Regardless of any misunderstanding, I don't believe that kind of reaction toward a customer is appropriate. Because of that interaction, I would not feel comfortable returning.

Not just knowledgeable and skilled, they are detail oriented and--most importantly--honest. It's not just their professional abilities I trust, it's their personal character. Secondly, price: Yes, they have reasonable rates for the routine stuff. Where they exceed expectations is how they put in time and effort to find me the lowest prices on the "oh-no" stuff--like when your car slides off your mother's icy driveway in to a ditch and a tree takes out a side mirror. Jay took the time to find a replacement mirror for way cheaper then other shops in Essex Thirdly, neighborliness: I don't just love that 2nd Gen is around the corner from my house so I can drop my car off and walk home--this is admittedly a huge bonus! That's sure make them convenient. But what makes them neighborly isn't just their physical proximity; it's that when I have a flat or an emergency, I can call Jay and he'll send his crew right over to my house to fix it right away--just like any friendly neighbor would. I was in a rush to get to work that day, so they told me I could just stop by the shop to pay after work. (Granted, we had already built a relationship of trust both ways...and, obviously, they literally know where I live ) Finally, bookability: Some mechanics around here seem booked for weeks. Second Gen will do their best to find time to fit me in. They communicate responsibly to let me know what to expect, and they honor my time by honoring the schedule they tell me. These guys are solid mechanics, no question. But what seals the deal for me is that these are good people, they are good neighbors. There is no question they care about my car and about doing excellent work--but I also know they care about me.
