I took my daughter's car here to be smogged for $42. It didn't pass smog. They said it was the thermostat, which could be replaced for $200. I made an appointment for the next week to have them replace the thermostat if the price was reasonable. I dropped off the car for the appointment. After just 20 minutes they called and said it was the thermostat (which they'd told me at the previous appointment) and that it would cost $700 to fix. The car is old and not worth much, so I told them No thanks. I went back to get the car, and they charged me $145 just for looking at it for 20 minutes!! That is ridiculous! Don't use this auto repair shop unless you like spending lots of extra money. I will never go back! read more

Hello. I am happy to write this review. I needed a pinion replacement and I took the car in. Auto Experts diagnosed the problem and quickly got it fixed. It was two days to get it fixed but they are very busy and it is a major fix. The price was totally fair. I used to take my car to these guys thinking i found a good, honest and reliable service in town. The first visit was great but after a few appointments the owner seems to be more concerned about their rich customers. I never get a phone call back when i was so desperate to fix my car. Also the last time I brought my car to them for a oil service after a few weeks i found out there was no oil in my car causing a huge a expensive problem to my vehicle. When i spoke to the owner he doesn't seems to care about my problem. I will never ever will bring my car to them and I won't recommend this place to anybody unless you are rich person ! Anthony has taken care of our cars since 2006. We cannot recommend him highly enough. We drive older vehicles, and he keeps them running in prime condition. He does not fix what does not need to be fixed, and I have found that whatever the problem he said it was, that was actually the problem. Just last week my son had taken his car to three different mechanics in San Diego, and so in frustration he brought his car home. ANTHONY IS THE BEST. (Period). I had to get my car towed to a "AAA" certified mechanic and they said "$150 for diagnostic and then it will take 2-4 days for the car to be repaired because parts take while to come in since its an old car" I towed it to Auto Experts and explained Anthony that I was a student and couldnt afford to get a hotel here. I had to get on the road ASAP. Car was dropped off at noon at Auto Experts. I reached out to them at 3:30pm to check up on the car and I was told "its ready for the road. Just need to wheel balancing done. I dropped it off at the tire shop right now and you may be able to get on the road today. If not, then for sure tomorrow morning". Being a student, I was worried about the cost as well. Anthony gave a a bargain!! Considering that the whole rear axle might be damaged, I only paid $220 for the whole repair! I would highly recommend Auto Experts! Anthony was great to deal with! I had a small electrical issue that I knew wouldn't take long to fix, however I did not have the proper tools. I moved to SLO as a student and went through 4 other mechanics for different work done on my car. I switched around because every other mechanic I went to left me feeling like I had been screwed somehow. The guys at auto experts, however, finally let me settle somewhere. After I had my first service done there (over $600), it was VERY clearly explained where each penny had gone to. They gave me a full detailed list on the work they did, each part they replaced, why they replaced it, what could have caused it to need to be replaced, and what I needed to do to make sure it didn't happen again. I actually learn a lot from them each time I go there, which is why this place truly deserves 5 stars. I'm not sure if their prices are any different than other mechanics, but for the peace of mind alone it would be worth the extra money, that is if it even is more expensive (the prices seem reasonable to me). *****************Things said by Anthony the owner*************** I can cut your wires and park your car on the street if you don't want to pay the 65$ and you can get it towed. (they were fixing what they broke should have been under warranty) Plastics break all the time and cars aren't supposed to be taken apart and put back together. Its not my problem. It must have been someone else who broke that part. (But Only shop that's touched my truck) We have zip-tied the wires to the heater hose. "Don't touch the wire it could break it." (sounds like its not a fix if touching it might break) He asked me "do you work? I said yeah. He said good then you know that I have to pay for a building and keep my employees paid." *******************What I Witnessed************************ Did not honor warranty Botched $850 timing belt job, ruined wire Covered up on the report that the Camshaft position sensor was changed in order to hide the fact that they had incorrectly laid the camshaft position sensor wire over the timing belt. (wire was ripped out of place) Botched wiring, the 2nd time I had them try to fix it but made it worse on the camshaft position sensor. Zip tied the bare cords to a high temp coolant line. (cords melted)(zip tie melted) Cords after 4 miles down the road started rubbing on the external drive belt. (cords were severed) Claimed to solve the problem, but did not. Charged me for fixing the problem, Before notifying me that they had found an issue. Blamed his employees for bad jobs and then charged the same rate. Blamed employees for lack of communication Check engine light came on 30s seconds out the door. Treated employees like garbage Admitted the job was poorly done. **********************My thoughts****************************** I felt harassed, and unvalued as a customer. Anthony's responses were always rapid/quick, and defensive which made me feel as though he is defensive on a regular basis. My personal opinion is they don't do quality work. I personally wouldn't work for that guy and feel bad for any employee under him. Avoid that at all costs. They did "not" honor their 2 year warranty on any of their work. The guy threaten to break my car by snipping the supposedly fixed wires if I didn't pay. Although the thing they were fixing was from their failed attempt at a job and was supposed to be free under warranty. They still charged me for something they messed up on the first time They do not take photos of their work and seem to hope for customers to not know what they are talking about. Anthony didn't respond or answer to any of my questions on the job and claimed he never saw any of it done. I had to continually ask questions, that he didn't want to answer. Probably because he didn't want to admit that they had messed up on the job. Blamed employees for his problems. Took no responsibility. From what I witnessed I wouldn't recommend this shop for any service or repair. The owner had a lack of respect for customers/employees, lack of integrity to do quality work. The high school does a better job. Word spreads fast in SLO. Was an embarrassingly bad experience. ********************Mechanic Solution update********************** Went to an actual mechanic which said the job was a joke. Said never go there again. The current estimated costs to get what they messed up the first time are about $450. The mechanic said I am honestly sickened with what I am hearing and seeing. We used to come here for our pt cruiser and we wish we'd never gone anywhere else! We're back now for good! We've come here to have tons of pt cruiser repairs done, smog on the Toyota 4Runner, and now repairs on the 4Runner due to another shop doing a shoddy job. This most recent visit, they were upset on our behalf that someone had given us such worn out horrible keys when we bought our 4Runner, that he was calling Toyota for replacement keys before we even could! He gave it a full lookover, and after we got the replacement keys and that didn't quite resolve our problem, then he went ahead with replacing the ignition cylinder which was exactly what was needed. He also lubricated our door locks a bit and touched up the new keys so that the old locks would accept the sharp new keys a little more readily. When we mentioned some braking difficulties, we found out we had no brake fluid! He filled it up for us, and put it up on the lift just to be sure...when all the fluid dumped out! Turned out the seller of our car (a local shop that did shoddy work) had sourced the brake master cylinder from the junkyard and it was full of seeds that were GROWING in there and leaving it full of holes. Yikes! He replaced that for us same day and it is a night and day difference! The car is in fantastic shape now! Thank you so much, we will be coming here from now on! read more

I have used Auto Experts for many years for various vehicles I have owned. Their work has always been prompt, thorough and expert. Their pricing appears to be very competitive. One thing I have observed is that they always use the highest quality replacement parts (even where they could substitute cheap knock-off parts. When I questioned Anthony (the owner) about his policy he explained that a) he owed it to the customer to give him products that a) would last well and b) minimize the cost/hassle of premature parts failure. After going to a different shop about five times and being given the runaround, I decided to take a friend's advice and head into Auto Experts. It took one quick phone call to Anthony and I was scheduled for my smog appointment on the same day within a couple of hours. The shop is a No-Frills kind of spot tucked back behind a thrift shop off of Higuera. They had my 1985 Porsche 911 in the bay within about two minutes and Taco was working his magic. He was thorough and stuck with the job until he handed back my keys with a smile and said, "You're good to go, sir!". All of the anxiety that I had about maybe having my older vehicle not pass and pay hundreds more working on it vanished. He did additional Internet research to see if the problem I was having was related to other issues and found out his answer and relayed that information to me as well.
