I brought my truck in to have an oil change, a tune up and the brakes worked on. They informed me the transmission needed to be fixed before they could work on it and gave me a referral. After getting the transmission fixed, I called to make an appointment. The person who answered stated the shop was really busy and to call in 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, I called and made an appointment. A few days later, a person from the shop called and said they were not going to work on my vehicle because the mechanics were older guys and they didn't want to work on an older model truck. I get the reason why they didn't want to work on the truck but felt they should have explained this to me in the first place instead of giving me the run around. My suggestion is if you have an older vehicle, go elsewhere. read more

My starter was failing on my pickup truck. I decided to give SMITTY'S a try. The truck literally died in their driveway and would not start. I felt terrible. They said not to worry, they'd find a place to put it and scheduled me for the next week. About 4 hours later I was trying to figure out how I would get to work when they called and said it was done! They'd had a canceled appointment and took my vehicle right in. The courteousness and concern they showed me as a customer was amazing. I drove by this morning on an outside chance they could do an oil change, filters, tire rotation, head light replacement, etc. It was my Dad's car (he recently passed), and he hadn't kept up with maintenance. The dealership couldn't figure out what was wrong with my Honda CRV, which eventually left me stranded with a dead car and a toddler in the backseat. Being an old fogey, with my children living far away, they have asked me to stay safe as it relates to both COVID and my car. Imagine my chagrin when I arrived at Smitty's to get an oil change and despite the current County order, the employees were not wearing masks. My assumption is if they don't care about my COVID safety, they wouldn't care about my car safety either. His volatile reaction to my mentioning my concern was unpleasantly over the top. I brought my vanagon in to get smogged. They said if I dropped it off all day, they could get to it. So I dropped it off. I then heard back the next day, that it wouldn't start. I said, well that's weird I drove it there. They said it wouldn't start, so they were going to bump start it and leave it on the street. They didn't smog it. They didn't suggest a repair. Nothing. Just hay, your car didn't start. We are leaving it on the street, so have a nice life. They are mechanics? Now, here is the real kicker. I went to pick up the van on the street. It started on the first try? I thought they were mechanics? They also didn't fold my seats back, and damaged the interior of my car. Unreal?!? read more

I had really high hopes for this place. Excellent yelp reviews and right next to where I'm staying, this seemed like a great place to get some car work. I scheduled an appointment 3d out and brought the car at the agreed time. They told me they'd just have to look at it for 2-3h and we could go from there. After hearing nothing, I came back 2.5h later to be told that they hadn't even touched the car and that I could come back next week. At any point in this process, they could have 1) told me they couldn't do it today, or 2) done something to try to make it right, but they just said come back next week. My daughter came to visit from up north and her car broke down while she was here. It was on a Saturday, but Allan was in the office and answered the phone. i explained what the car was doing when it stopped running and asked if he could help us. I explained that I would be paying for the repairs and he told me not to worry until they knew what was wrong. I called Tuesday to see if he knew what was wrong and Allan told me it was ready. There were numerous things wrong with the car and I was ready for a obscene charge but when I asked him how much and to be "kind" to me, I was shocked at the cost. I really think the cost was more than fair, in fact I had expected hundreds of dollars more. I have been driving a lot of years and have used lots of dealerships and garages for car repairs. I called 2-3 times to set up an appointment to drop off my car and was told to call back later in the week/next week/etc. After we settled on a drop off time I got a ride set up and my schedule adjusted to drop it off. I called to confirm someone would be there at the time of the appointment, it was 4-something pm. Nobody answered my call, I left my name and number(which I already had done 1-2 times before). Nobody called me back. At this point I've put in more time and energy than is reasonable to 'give a local place a chance'. If I get some type of follow up or any sign of effort I may remove my negative review. Until then, 1 star. read more

This has been the VERY best mechanic experience I've had since needing one (about twenty years). I'm very loyal to mechanics because I feel like they have an understanding of your car, just like a doctor, would over time and I tend to keep vehicles until they're well and truly dead. Having move to Los Osos and being a little nonplussed with my current mechanic in SLO and his lack of responsiveness and timeliness, I decided to give a more convenient shop a chance - one I can walk my dogs to - and the Yelp reviews looked phenomenal. And, once again, just like almost everything else I've experience in Los Osos, this place is the best. The atmosphere is awesome - the guys are friendly, genuine, and really seem to care about not only your happiness but what's going on with the car. They gave me a friendly guilt trip about my car needing alignment (which I knew) but did it in such a way that I am making an appointment immediately ("They're such nice tires, it'd be a shame to ruin them!"). The outside has a little patio if you're waiting for something fast, the inside is decorated with kid photos and Clint Eastwood (I just felt like a badass walking in), and had a great, personable experience with everyone. Here it is 5 years later and we're still prepared to keep on raving about the folks at Smitty's. About 6 months ago we took our 23 year old Toyota to Smitty's to have a hesitation looked at. My wife picked up the car and was told it was fixed, but we should start thinking about retiring the old gal. Just had a difficult smog test done on a vehicle that had not been driven for a year. They told me how to reset the sensors and did several checks to make sure it would pass smog. They got me in promptly on the AGREED upon time. After the sensors were reset it did. Invaluable info and help. They also replaced my water pump and serpentine belt (labor on the belt was gratis) several years prior, so I knew I could trust them for great service and a fair price. I had an 8am appointment to get my car smogged and everyone was ready to work but waiting on the boss to show up (Smitty). It was already 15 minutes past my appointment and no Smitty to perform the smog. I was told to leave my car and that he would be on his way shortly and it would be ready in approx. 40mins. After about 40 mins I returned to pay my bill only to discover (after waiting an additional 10plus minutes for Smitty to chat with someone...rude) that he could not perform the smog needed for my car. I found this really upsetting since he was late, his staff told me they were working on my car, and all he needed to do was call me and say that they didn't have the correct machines. This was a total waste of my time and enough for me to stop taking my business there along with those I recommended. Too bad I can't bill him for the hour wasted based on his negligence to pick up a phone. read more

The last honest mechanic! Smitty's is the best! I can't tell you how many times I have taken my cars here and been so impressed with the service and the price. One time they misdiagnosed the problem, even though what they fixed needed to be fixed, and they didn't charge me for it. I got about $300 worth of work for $40! I felt like I was ripping them off. How often can you say that about your mechanic. every time I get my car back and they tell me the price I am shocked about how cheap it is. My old mechanic would have charged me double on just about everything, and they always do a great job and are extremely honest. They never try to up sell and keep it real. Unfortunately I had a bad experience with Smittys. Called before hand to go in to get a smog the man said come in when ever. Waited 30min and owner arrived and I told him I needed the smog and to check the timing. (Easy 5min process I just couldn't get a hold of a timing light.) After stating that he said he can't get to it today because of the timing and to come in on Friday at 4 o'clock. So I did and the owner had left for out of town who was the only one who could smog. Very upset with what happened can't blame the man for wanting vacation but between two jobs and school time is very limited. Unfortunately I will not be returning. read more
