I am extremely disappointed with the way this claim has been handled by the claim specialist, Jen Schlier. She was rude, unwilling to listen, and very difficult to communicate with throughout the process. Experiences like this can truly damage a company's reputation. A claims department should be staffed with professionals who know how to treat clients with respect, empathy, and professionalism -- especially during stressful situations involving claims. It is frustrating to pay monthly premiums expecting support when needed, only to feel dismissed when it is time for the company to step up. Based on my experience, I hope the company seriously evaluates the quality of customer service they are providing and the people representing them. Worst and most incompetent company of thieves I've ever had the displeasure of doing business with. Sent me an 'audit' from 2022 in May of 2025. No process, just a large bill with no definition, a week to pay, and a threat of termination. I called, explained my situation. Nikki Dyer said she would correct the situation. 2 weeks later my policy is cancelled without any further explanation; been a customer for 16 years. Years ago, I had a family member who worked for them sign me up for a crazy expensive policy I didn't need so she could get her bonus for signing me up. This is crap insurance!!! They may start off with lower premiums but they end up increasing it at renewal time. My car insurance increased by 40% at renewal time so I ended up switching to another company. I still have my homeowner's insurance through Auto-Owners. In the 3 yrs. that I have been a customer, I filed 1 claim for hail damage to my roof. The claims adjuster returned my telephone calls 10% of the time. I was passed around to different adjusters. My claim was ultimately denied. Customer service constantly told me my claim was closed and that there was nothing else to do on the claim which I later learned was incorrect. That prompted me to file an appeal. My 10+ neighbors had their claim approved for hail damage to their roofs in a very timely manner. Several weather reports, specifically to my address, noted 1.25 hail. Yet, Auto-Owners continues to deny my claim. I am the ONLY one in my community that is still fighting with my insurance company. If you want to talk to the CEO or Regional Director, forget it! I sent a letter to the CEO and Regional Director regarding my complaint and received telephone calls from other people in the company. If there was a way to provide zero stars. This review is a reflection of an adjuster, Brian Jacobs. He is very rude and unprofessional, his emotions get the best of him in during communication with business. While on the phone with a homeowner this gentleman thought it best to insult me, not understanding the homeowner had questions concerning the audit trail leading up to a check being cancelled. Before the conversation began Brian Jacobs skipped protocol, what this means is he did not protect the homeowner, instead he jumped directly into verbal combat with me. I think Auto-Owners may be having their own problems. My auto coverage went up 30% for 2025! No explanation other than 'state-wide' increase. When I signed up for auto pay they stopped sending invoices with explanation of the charges. I pay full-pay in order to get the discount. I got a notice that my credit card would be hit with the 130% charge on the due date. With no breakdown of the charge. They give great discounts when signing up for service but begin reducing them after the first year!! How backwards it that?? I have not had claim with them, on any of my 3 vehicles, 2 business policies, or 2 rental properties. So I can not share any tragic claim stories. Keep in mind . . . not paying claims is in the best interest of the Company and Auto-Owners is not the only company that attempts to minimize payouts. But they obviously have other less obvious ways to screw you if you don't have any claims. read more

When do you pay for homeowners insurance and then discover you are uninsured? When you buy from Auto-Owners. Auto-Owners took over a month to flat cancel (like it never happened) the homeowners insurance I purchased. Why? Their reason: The purchase price of the properties was less than 50% of what they determined the replacement cost wold be. Keep in mind, they can manipulate the replacement cost calculation any way they want, and the premium will be based on the replacement cost, not the purchase price. Flat Cancel means you never had insurance from day one. Now I am in litigation to get a refund of the premium I paid for the non-insurance, and all of a sudden Auto-Owners says I am insured with them and if I wish to cancel they gt to keep a prorated portion of the premium. Keep in mind I have emails from Auto-Owners and the Broker stating the policies were flat cancelled. Next I guess they will try to invoke an Arbitration Clause that is "in the contract" to which my reply will be "what contract? You cancelled it flat out, so there never was a contract." read more

I have paid my deductible, but there was an additional damage during the accident, and they are refusing to fully fix my car and put it back to where it was before the accident. So...I had to ad this review after I noticed that this company isn't a part of the Yelp community. I may get banned for saying this....but it is a little known fact that if a company doesn't 'play nice' with Yelp, The reviews will almost ALways be poor. This applies to any and all companies that do not sign up with Yelp. In this case, however-seems pretty accurate, sadly. They've given me the lowest Liability quote out there, so far. So I'm being generous and giving them 2 stars. I had dealings with this company because of an accident involving my parked Toyota at my local repair shop. The mechanical repairs were completed, and my car was parked in the back lot, waiting for me to pick it up. Unfortunately, the tire delivery lady (in a big box truck) side-swiped the corner of my car with her truck. The tire company is insuranced by AOI. Thanks to the Auto-Owners Insurance slow claims process, slow payments, and obstructionist tactics, I went without my car for 51 days! It was damaged on June 2, I heard from an adjuster on June 25, and I finally got my car back on July 21! The only reason I got it back this soon was due to my complaints at the auto body shop. The shop showed mercy and released the car to me, despite not receiving their final payment from AOI. I live alone and I'm recovering from cancer treatment, along with a couple of other medical issues. I make multiple trips to the doctor and I have a hard time moving around. The delays with my car were a huge, painful inconvenience for me. It was supposed to be gone for one week. But it was gone for 51 days. Ridiculous! Apparently, the company doesn't realize (or care) that their greedy bickering over dollars creates real pain and real problems for people. Horrible company! Our house was hit heavily by hail, totaling thousands of cars and damaging many houses, including ours. We had a roofing company go up to check our roof, and they showed us all the heavy damage caused by the hailstorm. We filed a claim, and THEIR engineer was sent out and pointed out that our gutters and siding had also sustained damage. Several days later, we received a report stating they had not found any significant damage and that the claim had been denied. AUTO OWNERS WILL BE HEARING FROM OUR LAWYER SOON. I hate writing bad reviews, first it's gotten difficult to type physically - so if there are errors, I apologize. WHAT A YEAR DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE. So last week I needed to use the tow services for a flat tire, because 1. a lug was so tight that I broke the star wrench I was using and twisted another and 2. my strength was not up to continuing on my own. So I tried calling the 888 number - automatic teller as usual with a bunch of options....it was difficult to dial cause my right hand is shaking like a leaf in fall, but ok...I tried to zero out and EVENTUALLY I was put on hold....15 minutes later (I'm supposed to be at an appointment - see my critique on the Nulty Agency) I hang up and try again, waited on hold another 10 minutes, call the 888 number and retry the options list; finally, clicked on the appropriate number for a 3rd time and got the message in effect to hit this number and we'll send you a link to follow to get service ordered...it's all I can do to get the stinking phone still from my incessant shaking, I need a person to talk to! Finally after sometime, I was able to click on the right number...of course, now I have to TYPE a bunch more information ok,...after all is said and done, I get it done and it will be an hour and 15 minutes for them to get here,...ok, they actually made it, the two people that showed up were very friendly and took care of the problem, EXCEPT they took my new PB Blaster can! So as you can see, AO continues to place the customer experience in the hands of the computer and whose "added benefits," aren't really a benefit. I stayed with them because of price and 20+ years of history with the company, but maybe it's time to go......again, I'm sorry this wasn't an improvement over last year. WOW THE RENEWAL RATES and I have a decent history. My typing volume may seem in contrast to my claim that it's difficult, but i was a trained Radio-Teletype Operator in the Army. Have been with them for many years never had accidents, etc. then (2016) had a car broken into, they paid for the window, 2 weeks later totaled car and travel trailer which they covered with no hassle including a rental car and hotel room. About 6 years later back window of car was broken which they covered immediately. Not sure if the problems ppl have complained about have anything to do with their agent but I have always used the 800 number and received good service with no questions or problems. read more

Terrible company. "Lie, cheat, and steal"should be their tag line. We were hit by an EF-2 tornado in February. We are still fighting to get our roof covered. Initially, They had an "adjuster" visit the house. He couldn't determine whether the damage to our brand new roof (only 4 months old at the time of the storm) was due to wind damage. Really? It's 4 months old. After months of complaining and threatening they sent an engineer to assess the damage (but only after I made a BBB complaint). The engineer determined that the damage was due to moisture under the underlayment and not wind. Really? How did moisture get under the underlayment when the existing roof was torn off and installed in the same day? Additionally the report claimed that the winds that day were only 40mph. Again, really? We lost more than 40 large trees. Some easily 80' tall and 200 years old. If a 40 mph wind can take down a tree, how did that tree become 80' tall, 28" in radius, and 200 years old? Not a darn thing they have said or done has been accurate, honest, or in good faith. Never, I mean NEVER, trust this company. They are worse than thieves. read more

My insurance sent a request to get my $750 deductible back. They did not respond for multiple weeks. My Mother passed away and had life insurance policies on my brother and I. We opted to cash them out. They would not accept her death certificate, Trust, and Will. They insisted on needing a "letter of authority" which NOBODY in the entire corporate office could provide. They suggested that I contact an attorney. I asked for a breakdown of expenses but my agent told me to call the head office for an explanation. The head office said they don't have that info and can't help. One supervisor laughed at me. I have been with Auto-Owners for about 20 years and have about 5 policies with them. This company has gone from what I thought was a top notch company to one that, in my opinion, is way below average when it comes to customer service and resolving claims. I recently spent about 5 weeks trying to resolve a fender bender caused by a animal running out in front of my car. This was a comprehensive claim for less than $3000.00 that should have been resolved in a few days. The claims adjustor was in serious need of training or re-training. I can certainly understand a person not knowing something, but I have a serious problem having to deal with employees that just don't give a damn. I am very surprised to see so many negative reviews on here. I guess what they say is true, only the bad experiences tend to leave comments verses the thousands of positive ones. I've had auto-owners insurance for 12+ years and love talking to a real person every time I call. We have our home, auto and life insurance through them and enjoy a multi policy discount. Anytime we've had a claim they have been very professional and handled our claim quickly. I can see why they've been in business for more than 100 years. We had roof damage due to a storm, according to thier adjuster that they sent out we had substantial damage. Despite this damage they came back and stated they would give us $1700 to "patch the roof" we were told by matt that they dont care if the patch matches the rest of the roof that's wall they will cover. We recieved an estimate of 15k to fix the roof and 2k to repair the gutters. We will be finding a new insurance company as Matt the adjuster overseeing our claim has been rude and insulting and refuses to do the right thing. read more

I'm very surprised to see all the negative reviews here. We had a great experience with Auto-Owners after our townhouse was damaged due to a roof leak after a bad storm. They were prompt in getting a Claims Adjuster out to us, gave us guidance in dealing with our Association's insurance company, and quickly paid us the maximum our policy allowed for our portion of the repairs. We liked them so much, we switched our car insurance to them. Their rates for identical coverage were much better than what we had. I wonder if some of the problems reviewers here had, had more to do with the independent agents that sell the insurance versus Auto-Owners itself. read more

I started my own company, bought the insurance to be paid monthly. After paying for the first month, they threatened to cancel based on scope of work. A week later, they send out cancellation notice and tell me I have a balance due of $265. I already paid for the first month and now they want more money and I've only been with them for 3 weeks. After having Auto-Owners insurance I would strongly recommend you AVOID this company. I have never missed a payment. I was in an accident 10/19/20 and I was NOT at FAULT. The other driver was at fault. He was driving a company vehicle and there are 2 insurance companies covering the truck. Both companies claim it is the responsibility of the other insurance company so neither company would pay my loss. My agent recommended letting Auto Owners cover the damage. Unfortunately this means I have to pay my 1000.00 deductible. I was told after paying my deductible they will recover my 1000.00 for me. Beware.... A tree branch fell on my sons car that was parked in our driveway. John Harper of Auto-Insurance stated " they had not received prior notice that the tree branch was dead and therefore deny our claim." An Arborist came and observed the tree, said it was alive. How am I supposed to tell them ahead of time that a tree branch was going to break off and fall on my sons car? I am worried that I need to inform them now that I might get in a car accident, before I actually do.... just to make sure they know upfront that it might happen. WHAT A JOKE?
