I was recommended this company by Holly at The White Pear who did my yard design. She was expensive but I liked what she recommended for my yard. I am on a corner lot, so this was front and side of house. It was a pretty big job and I had a well established yard that I was completely re-landscaping. The initial bid Kevin Schindler gave me was much more than Holly had told me the job would cost so we cut out lighting, irrigation, pavers to make it reach what I was told the job would cost. It took them much longer to start the job and when they finally got there, the crew was nice and working quickly. I spoke with the supervisor talking about being sure to get all the roots out, especially from some yucca plants that were old and had giant roots. He assured me they were getting everything out. When they finally planted the plants and laid the bark dust, I was told if any plants didn't survive due to transplant shock, they would replace them. I had one die right away and it took them months to come back and get it. in the meantime, the yucca plant started growing back. I dug up giant roots and asked them to come back and take care of it. After many calls with Holly and Kevin, they initially tried to basically tell me that I didn't know what I was talking about and that I should expect that to come in. Finally, Kevin showed up, agreed it was yucca, dug up a few roots and that was the last I heard of him. I had to have my gardener put herbicide on the leaves to finally kill the roots which then killed some of my new plants that I will have to replace this year. Then this February, when spring rolls around, my yard is completely overgrown with bulbs they left which unbeknownst to me are invasive but had always been in my old yard. They are now taking over the new plants. I reached out and let them know I had no expectations when spring came that all these bulbs were left in the yard, despite the fact my contract said they were clearing all the old plants out. Obviously, they did not do the job right. Again, it was almost as if they were saying it was my fault. I asked if they could send the crew out, it would probably take them a half day, to clear it out and then I will know next year and get on it. They basically blew me off. Kevin said put herbicide on them. There are SO many, it would kill all the plants I had just purchased last year along with my 18 year old Japanese Maple tree. I said if I got my gardener to do it would they pay for it? Kevin went silent. Holly then wrote and said we will send you $100. What a joke. I sent it back. Do not use this company. There are plenty of landscaping companies in Portland to take a risk with this one. Buyer beware. read more

My wife and I had an excellent experience with Kevin Schindler and his crew at Autumn Leaf Landscaping. While our project may not have been the largest in the company's history, it was the most money we've ever spent on landscaping. Due to the project's $20K+ cost, we were very careful about who we selected for the work. Our project involved creating an entirely new back yard lawn, a new side yard lawn, a decorative winding pathway in excess of 200' in length, countless plants, small scale excavation, and replacing part of our front yard with new sod. Prior to beginning the work, we met with a landscape designer. She came up with a layout that we liked and Autumn Leaf followed the design and produced the result we were looking for. We live over 60 miles from Autumn Leaf's office and the crew still arrived promptly each day. They cleaned up before leaving each day and were quick to take care of any issues we had. There are issues with virtually any project and ours was no exception. We had plants that died, a tree that was leaning, and a drain basin that needed adjustment. Each of these were handled promptly and professionally. In the near future we plan to add to the walkway as well as have pavers installed. We look forward to working with Autumn Leaf again. read more

Do not hire this company!! They have no problem doing shoddy, shoddy work and leaving you high and dry. After our initial consultation, I had complete faith in Matthew Hammack and was looking forward to working with him on my small front yard landscaping job and sidewalk concrete repair. He did a good job initially, but then he completely disappeared. He made one walk through after the winter frost had abated and promised to come back to replace the dead plants which did not make it through the winter, and complete the contract by getting the sidewalk done. (Because he wasn't able to repair the sidewalk timely, he would not charge us for that portion of the work, so we gave him a check for the remainder of the contract, minus the "cost" of the concrete work. Big mistake!) As soon as the rain abated, he would be back to paint the fence which he had "repaired" by replacing a two crosspieces. I was not happy that rather than cut new pickets he simply put back on the old, dry-rotted pickets, but I did not want to fight that battle with him. After all, there was more important work yet to be done. But he disappeared. No return calls, no responses to my texts, no email returns. I called and called, texted and texted, wrote email after email. Nothing. My husband dialed his number, and not recognizing my husband's cell phone, he answered. At that point, he promised to come paint the fence, teach us how to use the drip water system which he had installed but for which he had not left instructions, and finally get the concrete work done. His workers showed up and sprayed one coat of paint on the fence, and on the ground, and on the surrounding plants and bark dust. No primer, one thin coat. It looked like hell. It barely covered the mud and mold which had not even been cleaned off. I hired someone to clean, prime and paint the fence for me. I was beyond frustrated. Weeks later he lets us know that he won't be able to get the sidewalk repaired. He said simply, "I can't find anyone to do it." Weeks after hearing nothing we send a certified mail, return receipt requested, letter listing our grievances to the owner of the company, Kevin Schindler. Mr. Schindler came to our house. He said he "understood our frustration". He put a battery in the drip mechanism, which Hammack had failed to do, and listened to our sob story. He offered to try to find someone to complete the contract, i.e. the concrete work, but he's not optimistic. No apology, no offer of compensation or effort to make us whole. Our promise to him was to use the social media platform to let people know that hiring this company could be a grievous mistake. Use your own judgment. Do you want to give this company your money? Do you want to trust them to fulfill their contract? Please don't. They might just disappear on you one day. read more

This is our second season working with Kevin and we are 100% pleased with his company's work. Kevin has received specialized training in installing pavers and it showed in his multi-step process. Our pavers haven't budged, unlike the pavers some friends have installed themselves. His crews are hard-working and very eager to please. There were some minor issues that had to be resolved after the work was completed. (I was traveling when plants were planted.). Kevin quickly sent a crew and everything was resolved quickly and cheerfully. Kevin stands behind his work and strikes me as a man of integrity. Our yard is beautiful and we are enjoying entertaining outside again. One more thought: Kevin worked with our landscaper, Pat Acheff of Visionscapes Northwest. He made her beautiful design into reality. We asked Pat to design a "low water use" plan and it's beautiful and will save us money this summer since less water will be needed, including for the lawn. The original planting/installation went okay. Unfortunately we have had many problems since then: the new lawn never grew in properly, irrigation problems, bad soil was used for our vegetable garden (when we asked for new organic soil, etc.). They have been back on multiple occasions to rework some issues. Others problems were never addressed and they have failed to respond to us. I would not recommend Autumn Leaf. read more

Kevin, the owner came out to my house to look at the professional landscaping plans I had drawn up for our yard changes. He has worked with this business before and was recommended. There was a complete plant list and mapped layout of the placements as well as new lighting and transplanting. This is an expensive job. Kevin said he would give me a bid soon, but after about 8 days of not hearing from him I reached out to see if he was still interested in bidding my job. I asked that he please respond so that I wasn't waiting on him. He did not even have the courtesy to let me know he didn't want the job, he just ignored me. Before we listed our home on the market, Kevin and his team fixed the issues with our pavers, pruned, mulched, and added compacted rock gravel under our patio. We are thrilled with the result, and our realtor was so impressed, he is going to recommend his clients to Kevin. :) read more

Beyond happy with our results! We had a HUGE project. About an acre of landscaping that was about 30% done with sprinklers and grass and trees planted. Matt scheduled an appointment to stop by and go over in detail what we were imagining. This included more than 20,000 square feet of grass, a 300' rock retaining wall, trees, shrubs, flowers, truckloads of river rock for the bed areas. The quote was within our range and so we scheduled them to start. Eduardo was the lead crewman. He and two other men were out every day working hard. They spent more than six weeks at our place making it beautiful. Matt was out at least once a week to check on things and make sure everything was going as planned and he addressed any concerns we were having throughout the whole time. Communication was always easy. We made a few changes along the way and they were always flexible and happy to do it. Eduardo and his team picked up after themselves, every night. Nothing was left out or sloppy. There was no smoking. The best part is my husband is happy with it. He is beyond picky and very much a perfectionist. Throughout the process my husband kept saying, "They are really doing a great job!" Let me tell you, this NEVER comes out of his mouth! We are both thrilled with the work and the beautiful yard we have now! We will recommend them over and over again. read more
