We recently had our 73-year-old chimney repaired by Brandon and his team from A Better Chimney and are very happy with how it turned out. The mortar was crumbling - chunks were actually falling into our backyard - and the whole structure was showing its age. We really needed to get it fixed as soon as possible. We got 3 other estimates, and all of them gave us no other options except to tear the whole thing down and rebuild - something we did not have the budget for. Brandon carefully explained how he would go about repairing the chimney and that rebuilding it was NOT the only option. Brandon and his crew handled everything smoothly and finished the job in two days. They also cleaned up the lime stains on the outer brick; something the other companies told us couldn't be done and that we'd just have to live with it. As promised, Brandon came back a month later to seal the chimney, ensuring everything was perfect. I didn't want to have to leave this review. I like Brandon, I liked his team. From the beginning, the process seemed a bit scattered and he was hard to get a hold of - but when I met Brandon, I just liked him. And he seemed knowledgeable and gave me a great price to boot. The top of my chimney was crumbling and I was given an estimate and a detailed explanation of the work being done. The bulk of the work was done in a timely fashion, with a few small issues: Brandon told me he would go speak to my neighbors about the dust, but we got an angry letter from those same neighbors after the work started, because no one had talked to them about it. One of the chimney workers - Brandon's brother - loudly complained to him in my presence that Brandon was charging way too little for this particular job and expressed his displeasure at that fact. But honestly, I didn't really care about this stuff at the time. I liked these guys and they seemed to be on the level with me. But here's why I'm taking the time to leave them a one star review: They never completed the work. Brandon told me multiple times that once they completed the tear down and rebuild, they would pack up and return at an undefined date in about a month to do the weatherproofing. I was honestly skeptical of this promise, but as I mentioned before - I liked these guys and wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Sure enough, a month rolled by. Then two months. Winter was approaching, so I decided to email. No reply. I emailed again. No reply. So I decided to call. No reply. So I called again. And again. No reply. I was dismayed and decided to wait even longer before I wrote this review. I liked these guys and wanted to give them a shot. But here we are: it's been 4 months, and I haven't heard hide nor hair of this company. So it looks like I'll be doing the weatherproofing myself, despite the fact that I already paid them to do it. The previous owner really didd a number on our chimney and our inspector completely missed it!! It got to a point where the fireplace was so drafty it was like an open window. Unfortunately this review has nothing to do with the chimney, but everything to do with the installation of a cyclone fence that Brandon's team mate Pedro said that he can complete for us. The bottom line is that the job was not completed in the time stated, Pedro abandoned the job, and between Brandon and Pedro they left the remaining balance of our deposit in a hidden location on our property, and called us to let us know that the cash was located there. Unfortunately we had plans on hiring this company for a chimney project. I think it's safe to say that we can no longer find confidence within this company's ability to complete that job, based upon their actions with the cyclone fence job. read more

Brandon, from A Better Chimney, did a fantastic job cleaning the wood burning stove that is recessed into my fireplace. This particular chimney had not been cleaned in at least 10 years and was filthy with ash and carbon debris. Getting it properly cleaned took hours and he did a fantastic job. I actually hired him on the recommendation of my next door neighbors, who have happily used his services on an annual basis for several years. They burn fires from the early morn to late evening as a primary heat source and he has kept their chimney in great shape. I have already recommended Brandon to several friends. Brandon is a good communicator. Since I have an office job, it was really nice that he was able to email back and forth about the project. We had him fully re-point our 1949 chimney, using tinted mortar. Overall, very happy with the end result. The only issue I have is that overall this took a very long time to complete. It seems that getting his guy scheduled was difficult, and then whether the guy showed up or not was never a sure thing. When he was there and working it was fine, he was productive, but overall the actual re-pointing seemed to take a month, with only 3-4 days of actual work. We also had to tell them to protect windows right next to the chimney - not really something that should be overlooked. But, as we had agreed, they completed the work and followed up on all aspects that we were concerned about, including coming back 6 months later in the dry weather to apply the weatherproofing coating to seal it up. So, hats off to them for their follow through and good communication. Also, the price was very fair. read more

From our initial meeting until the work was completed, Brandon clearly explained what needed to be done and what to expect for scheduling. We had obtained multiple bids (some recommended doing a complete rebuild) but Brandon recommended removing/replacing the existing mortar ("tuck-pointing") and explained why a rebuild was unnecessary and why this lower cost repair would address all of our concerns about aging mortar. His bid was very reasonable and we felt confident in his expertise. Our newly repaired chimney looks great, and includes a new custom-built chimney cap. I could tell from the ground that the cement in my chimney was crumbling. Brandon answered my call and came to inspect my chimney soon thereafter. He explained the procedure carefully: remove the crumbling cement enough to hold a new mix, and replace it with a mix meant for this type of work.
